KELLY+ JONES Mezcal Azul

Introducing KELLY+JONES Mezcal Azul

Para todo mal, Mezcal. Y para todo bien, tambien.

A popular Mexican saying that means “for everything bad,  Mezcal. And for everything good, too“.

Kelly Jones of Kelly + Jones

Kelly Jones Founder of  Kelly + Jones

Creating a new category where none existed before is a creative endeavor and Kelly Jones, Founder of Kelly +Jones, accomplished that twice. Once with the Notes of Wine Collection (2011) then she delved into the agave spirit with her Mezcal Collection (2017) which was the first fragrance line inspired by agave spirits to capture the aromas and terroir of  Mezcal.  Mezcal Azul (blue) is the latest addition to the collection of seven.

I started seeing so many similarities between wine and Mezcal. There are over 30 types of agave from which you can make Mezcal, and each bottle differs depending on region, climate, distillation methods, and more. In other words, it has terroir – just like wine.”-Kelly Jones, Founder of Kelly+ Jones

It was serendipitous that Kelly informed me that she was releasing Mezcal Azul on the eve of my trip to Mexico. The hotel had a proper selection of Mezcals to indulge in. So on my return, with Mezcal Azul waiting for me, I was in the right headspace to give in to its spirit (pun intended)! Mezcal is like the ultimate aphrodisiac, with its centuries-old heritage and enrapturing breadth of aromas and taste. “It’s a perfume; an utter love potion of the land.” Kelly Jones, Founder of Kelly Jones

Mezcal and mythology : In ancient legends, the agave plant, or “maguey”, was gifted to humanity by Mayahuel as a source of sustenance and sacred nectar. The agave’s core, or “piña”, contained a liquid that became the foundation for Mezcal.

For Azul, Kelly journeyed to Oaxaca, into the agave fields, and captured the fragrance of various types of Mezcal and its unique range of tasting notes. The opening of Agave embers throws off a refreshingly sweet, earthy, aquatic aroma, with a cooling citrus note which adds an invigorating element. The Crystal Sky (the first time I’ve encountered this note) note smells of a cool zephyr. Creosote (again the first time encountering this note!) exposes a unique sweet smell that is released during a desert rain that fills the air after the storm passes. This distinctive aroma is so prevalent that people often say “The desert smells like rain” when experiencing a storm in the desert.

Mezcal Azul KELLY+JONES

 KELLY+JONES Mezcal Azul

Desert Lily imparts a powdery, floral, citrusy note that runs clean and easy and leads us into the oakmoss that pervades the dry down.  Mezcal, which has a cult-like following is best described as having a signature smokiness to it. Here I get a woody, earthy, mossiness that turns slightly sweet and smoky with a distinct marine seaweed facet. The smokiness is understated. Azul wears close to your skin and like a desert, it can be very worn in the heat of the day and the coolness of the night. Like the desert, Azul’s beauty lies in its simplicity.

For Kelly, heaven is the essence of sipping Mezcal under a clear, deep blue desert sky. Azul transports me there.

programa vaca

Programa Vaca Group November 2024

For Kelly, the most beautiful aspect of the story of Mezcal is its link to the culture of Oaxaca, and Mexico – the indigenous history of the spirit, the spiritual and religious influences in its creation, and the families working to keep their traditions alive. Kelly + Jones will donate a portion of every Mezcal Azul Eau de Parfum sale to Programa Vaca. This Mexico-based organization is helping to rebuild the country’s earthquake-affected rural areas with sustainable architecture and natural materials, for long-term, positive human impact. Viva!

Notes:  Agave Embers | Crystal Sky | Creosote | Desert Lily | Oakmoss

  • Wow! One of the famous distilleries of my Mexico where grown mezcal for sure is Oaxaca and beautiful people and for sure the fragrance also , greetings

  • Wow I happen to be a huge fan of Tequila so I am quite familiar with the name Azul!
The Crystal Sky Is a new note to me but if it smells like you described it as a cool zephyr on first glance then it must be a great scent.
Also perfect timing to get this fragrance right after your Mexico trip.

I love aquatic fragrances, and using the inspiration of Mezcal sounds like a refreshing and unique way to experience the often generic take on aquatics. I live in Maryland USA.

  • This fragrance sounds like a combo of some of my fave things – aquatics, smokiness and citrus. I love that a portion of sales are going to help rebuild earthquake damaged areas.

    Melissa, Kentucky USA

  • Well the notes are so different and interesting that right off this sounds like a Must Try, but seaweed notes and oakmoss? RIGHT up my ally! Everything about this (smoky sweetness, desert rain) sounds amazing and wonderful.

  • I always enjoy the use of vivid imagery when describing scents like Hernando has. The desert can be a very magical place.

  • Hernando’s review of Mezcal Azul makes me think of an airy, earthy, grounding scent. Now I cannot get the image of having a sip of Mezcal under a clear blue sky.

I love that a portion of Kelly’s proceeds will go the Program Vaca charitable organization!

I also live in Metro Detroit, Michigan!!!!

  • Not very familiar with the Mezcal note. Very curious to try this fragrance.

What caught my attention about Hernando’s review was when he mentioned the link with this fragrance to the culture of Oaxaca, and Mexico.

To be able to give back is awesome.

  • Even though I’m not a big drinker myself I happen to enjoy boozy fragrances a lot. Now, this is not boozy in the sense we’re accustomed to but more in a natural, Mezcal way. Mezcal is more dry and natural than other spirits and that’s also where the inspiration from the fragrance came from. Love seeing these new notes and I am just curious how the fragrance behaves on different skin types. I don’t know about you, but spirits are calling my name. I’m located in the USA.

  • Oh I just love the scent of rain on thirsty soil, and what is desert soil if not thirsty! This sounds really cool, and makes me want to learn more about mezcal and it’s terroir and it’s different notes. This sounds really interesting. Thank you for the lovely review and draw. I’m in the us

Love this fragrance description. The Crystal Sky Is a new note to me but if it smells like you described it as a cool zephyr on first glance then it must be a great scent. From PA, USA

  • I love that they donate a portion to earthquake survivors. I’ve been wanting to smell these mezcal fragrances for way too long! Each one sounds unique and enticing. I love the way this one sounds almost otherworldly. I am located in California.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I adore this line! I have not yet smelled this one but it sounds like a fantastic addition. I bet that creosote note is spectacular! And I am so curious about the hint of seaweed! This entire line is so good and each time I smell one I end up needing a full bottle. I love what Kelly Jones is doing to support the community that inspired her. From the US.

I really enjoyed the history lessons and the way that Hernando’s review of Kelly+Jones Mezcal Azul introduced me to the brand and it’s founder.
I’m definitely interested in learning more about mezcal and the different variations of it.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

To capture the essence of mezcal in a bottle .. and yet still give back to the community. What a wonderful concept.

  • I had no idea Mezcal had so many different facets and olfactory nuances. Mezcal Azul sounds like an ode to the desert landscape with (new to me as well) notes of crystal sky, creosote and desert lily. I really like the idea of experiencing the heat of the day and the coolness of night in the desert. MD, USA

  • This seems like such a fascinating scent I need to smell! I’m glad this review noted on the significance of how pioneering this line of perfume is because even though I’ve never seen a mezcal scent before I assumed it had to have been done before by somebody out there. Knowing this is uncharted territory and seeing the notes that look so unique really sold me on the beauty of this bottle. I live in the USA

  • Each new release in the Mezcal Collection makes me more intrigued by this focused collection of fragrances. I didn’t expect Kelly would create so many variations on this theme, but she summed it up in her quote, that there are many variations in Mezcal to explore. Azul sounds unique in a few different ways, including the creosote note, which establishes a profound sense of place. The smokiness here also sounds restrained, letting the citrus, earthy notes, and slight marine aspect shine. Love the label design too—I’d love to try this.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Hernando’s article beautifully captures the essence of Kelly + Jones’ new Mezcal Azul fragrance, making me want to try it! The description evokes a sense of place and history, connecting the fragrance to the rich tradition of mezcal. As Kelly says, “Mezcal is like the ultimate aphrodisiac, with its centuries-old heritage and enrapturing breadth of aromas and taste,” and the fragrance seems to bottle that very essence. I’m particularly intrigued by the notes of crystal sky and creosote. I love how Hernando described them as the “sweet smell that is released during a desert rain”. These unusual accords, combined with the smoky, woody base and the “powdery, floral, citrusy” Desert Lily, must make for a captivating scent. The fact that the fragrance is inspired by the terroir of Oaxaca and supports a good cause just adds to its allure. I love the idea of a scent that transports you to “heaven,” which for Kelly, is “the essence of sipping Mezcal under a clear, deep blue desert sky.” Who wouldn’t want to experience that?

Thank you, Hernando, for the amazing article, and thank you to Kelly Jones for the generous giveaway! I am located in the USA.

Hernando’s review of Mezcal Azul evokes a light, earthy, and grounding aroma. It paints such a vivid picture that I can almost imagine sipping Mezcal under a vast, clear blue sky.
I also appreciate that a portion of Kelly’s proceeds supports the Program Vaca charity—such a meaningful touch!
    I live in the US.

  • I really enjoyed how immersive and atmospheric this review was, Hernando! The descriptions are so vivid and transportive– the striking contrast between warm embers, cool skies, and the petrichor-like creosote all evoke a full sensory experience– both intimate and expansive! I’d love to you join you and Kelly in sipping mezcal under a deep blue desert sky 🙂 I’m in NC, USA

Oaxaca is a gem of a city and state. I’ll near forget the time I spent there. I am intrigued by the fascinating and unexpected notes in Mezcal Azul. The desert notes especially sound interesting. I don’t drink anymore, but I would love to wear this fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’m interested in smelling this just for the creosote note alone which sounds interesting. I’ve not tried mezcal in many years but if I enjoy this scent perhaps I’ll give it another chance. I’m in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeup Hernando!

Always interested to see fragrances based on food/drink.

Kelly Jones Mezcal Azul captures the essence of the Mexican landscape with its smoky mezcal accord, balanced by hints of lime. A mineral edge evokes the agave fields, subtly grounded with the cade wood. Tonka bean introduces sweetness while ambrette adds texture. The composition balances dryness and warmth in equal measure. The fragrance is a fascinating and not overwhelming interplay between its contrasts. Its complexity paints a landscape full of secrets, providing sophistication, a recognisable aspect with its familiarity and then elements never conceived previously. All this gives way to the amazing construction of this masterpiece within the perfumery world, delivering so many interesting elements, with plenty of intriguing interactions with all ingredients.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I quite enjoy mezcal and can imagine it translating well to a fragrance. I have personally never been to the desert, so I appreciate the imagery of what it smells like after the rain. Great to see that a portion of proceeds are going towards an earthquake-affected rural area! I am from New England, USA.

  • I love that the brand is giving back to the community for earthquake recovery. A fragrance that can go from cool to heat is something I am hoping to need soon after a long winter. Nothing beats the smell of a good storm in the desert. I’d love to try this out. USA.
