Kelly + Jones Mezcal Roja (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) + Desert Blooms and Warm Minerals Giveaway

“Journey into a new type of terroir – the agave fields of Mexico, and the sensorial world of mezcal. This new collection, inspired by the most mysterious, enrapturing spirit, will mesmerize you with a romantic adventure of smoky, woody, and fresh aromas. – Kelly Jones

Agave plants

A little background is in order for those not familiar with or just getting into Mezcal. Mezcal’s appeal comes mostly from the stories the brands tell about the villages and people who distill the spirits. The word “mezcal” translates to “oven-cooked agave” and that should give you a good idea of how the spirit gets made. Since agave plants can be tough to cultivate and can take decades to ripen, most mezcal operations are small by default. This is an artisanal spirit in almost every sense of the concept, which helps explain why it often costs more than tequila.

While smoky is the most common adjective when describing mezcals, don’t get tricked into believing it’s the spirit’s only characteristic. On the contrary, top-shelf mezcals serve up notes of sugar, herbs, salt, fruit, and citrus. That being said, smoke certainly dominates, especially to the uninitiated palates. Mezcal is definitely an acquired taste.

Mezcal country

While driven by tequila (the second-largest spirits category in value, after vodka) mezcal is also seeing impressive growth. While still small at 868,000 cases exported to the U.S. last year, it is up from 57,000 cases in 2012. And, mezcal is seen as an upscale product averaging more than $40 a bottle at retail. Among all spirits, mezcal is second only to single malt Scotch in terms of the highest average price per bottle.  Next time when ordering a margarita ask for mezcal instead of tequila. You’re welcome.

It was during Kelly’s former career as a Corporate Planner at Toyota in Mexico that introduced her to Mezcal. It was on a trip to visit the lagoons of Acapulco she found herself on the cliffs of Las Brisas when she met a fellow water-skier who introduced her to a complex, life-changing taste of tepeztate mezcal from a 30-year-old agave.

Kelly + Jones Mezcal Collection

Kelly + Jones Mezcal Collection

My introduction to Kelly +Jones’s Mezcal Collection was when she presented at Sniffapalooza’s 2022 Fall Ball. I was immediately smitten. As a Senior Contributor at ÇaFleureBon and a Senior Wine Specialist and Wine Consultant, I’m aware of the fragrance brands that mine the spirit world but the caliber of Kelly+ Jones’s Mezcal Collection floored me. Similar in concept to her Notes of Wine Collection the Mezcal Collection is based on the notes of the spirit but it is a quantum leap in Kelly + Jones’s evolution.  Kelly Jones launched her initial Mezcal Collection with Mezcal Blanca, Mezcal Negra, and Mezcal Roja. Mezcal Verde followed shortly after with Mezcal Añejo‘s release last year.

Developed in the mountains of Oaxaca they are blended with fifty essential oils and naturals. They are specially created to pair with various varietals of Mezcal. Kelly + Jones Eau de Parfums are all hand-poured and contain a “tequila accord” – a thread of scent containing the rich aromas of the heart of the agave. The label is made of eco-friendly paper – a fully compostable, biodegradable material made of stone, not trees.

Programa Vaca Group

 Programa Vaca Group

For Kelly, the most beautiful aspect of the story of mezcal is its link to the culture of Oaxaca, and Mexico – the indigenous history of the spirit, the spiritual and religious influences in its creation, and the families working to keep their traditions alive. A portion of every Eau de Parfum sale goes to Programa Vaca. This Mexico-based organization is helping to rebuild the country’s earthquake-affected rural areas with sustainable architecture and natural materials, for long-term, positive human impact.

I asked Kelly what her best-selling scent in the  Mezcal Collection is to date and not surprisingly it is Kelly + Jones Mezcal Roja, a blend of Desert Bloom & Warm Minerals. More than anything here, Kelly + Jones Mezcal Roja imparts a form of “terroir” (a sense of place). Terroir comes from the Latin word “terra,” meaning land. And I believe that is what Kelly was striving for. On my skin, Mezcal Roja dances back and forth between the sweet Cacao Blossom and the vetiver which I find less citrusy and more leaning into a smokier, spicier version. The plush Corn Silk gives it that slight creaminess that ties it together. The dry down has a seductive earthiness to it.

Notes: Cacao Blossom, Corn Silk, Vetiver, Ocote Wood, Oak Barrel

Kelly +Jones fragrances can be purchased through her website or through many retailers listed under About – Where to Buy.

  • I must admit, the only thing I know about tequila are the hangovers I’d get from them way back in college. I don’t know much about spirits to say the least, and incorporating those accords in fragrances is so new to me. Hernando’s description of the earthiness of Mezcal Roja is definitely intriguing, but what’s drawing me in is how purpose-driven the entire brand seems! This is definitely a brand I’d love to explore further and win from! Thanks for the intro to this brand, and cheers from the USA!

  • I love the story of this brand, the thoughtfulness behind every detail is inspiring. It is truly commendable that she has found a way to express this beautiful culture to the world and help give back and sustain its livelihood. This particular scent sounds quite lovely. I like the idea of the cacao and vetiver combo, plus that corn silk note has me extremely curious.Hernando mentions that is provides a creaminess to the profile, which I think would pair very well with a spicier type of vetiver that may be lacking the subtle milky facets it can often have. Fully intrigued. Reading from NC, USA.

  • What a coincidental time for this giveaway; I just got back from Mexico! While there I did a tequila tasting and learned a lot about the process of making tequila. There is certainly a connection between the earthiness of the tequila/mezcal making process and the earth notes in this fragrance. Hernando’s review interested me further by describing how the earth notes balance with the sweet and spicy notes. Would love to win this one! From PA, USA.

  • The educational aspects of the review were my favorite part: I didn’t know a lot of this. Also, of course, the notes used to blend this sounds amazing! and how can one resist a Corn Silk fragrance note? It sounds like as much of an experience as the travels that produced it.

  • Hernando! ❤️❤️❤️ What an Excellent & Expert introduction to Mezcal! Bravo! I think Kelly + Jones is one of the most interesting & exciting brands out there! Thank you so much for your Amazing deep dive! ❤️

  • I love the idea of a perfume with terroir! I am very curious about that corn silk note, and would love to smell this scent.

  • I really enjoyed the background about Mezcal and Oaxaca. Its cool to see what the fragrance is based off of and nice to learn that part of the profits goes towards rebuilding the rural areas affected by earthquakes. From TX, USA.

  • I really appreciate a beautiful mezcal. They can be so intricate and amazing. I love the addition of corn silk!! That’s incredible. Every note in this sounds amazing.
I definitely appreciate the support for local small farmers and the Indigenous community. All naturals always get a show of support from me. I think my Papi, who was born and raised in Panama and introduced me to mezcal would love to know about this.
Thank you for the opportunity to win a treasured bottle.

  • As someone who enjoys spirit notes in fragrances, as well as things from a diversity of sources, this sounds like something that would definitely appeal to me, especially the sense of terroir as Hernando mentions.

    I am in the USA.

  • Enjoyed reading the detailed description of mezcal and how its notes are used in the Mezcal Collection perfumes. I have smelled some perfumes with other spirit notes (cognac, bourbon, etc.) but never mezcal so I would like to try Kelly+ Jones Mezcal Roja and others in this collection. Good to hear that the brand gives back to the community where mezcal comes from. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental USA.

I enjoyed learning about mezcal; it especially struck me that the agave plants could take over 30 years to ripen! This scent sounds like it will be incredibly unique — I’m curious to experience this corn silk note as I don’t think I have ever seen it used before. I also love that the brand is dedicated to helping earthquake-affected rural areas in Mexico.

  • I really like desert scents such as Mojave Ghost and El Cosmico which feature creosote, dry woods, delicate flowers and sand notes. Mezcal Roja also seems to highlight those elements with the cacao blossom and Ocote wood. The tequila accord is a genius addition to the composition providing the agave base. I appreciate the sense of terroir it imparts and would love to try it. MD, USA.

  • I love how Hernando brought up the additional flavors of mezcal. I, admittedly, have only ever tasted extra smokey tequila. I may need to try it again and see if i can pull any other notes out. Starting to study perfumes more has made it easier to identify scents/flavors in food and drink, which is cool! I bet i would like mezcal more if i focused less on the smoke. Anyway, i love the smell of mezcal, actually! This perfume and house sound amazing and will be going on my to test list regardless. Im in WA, USA.

  • I recently had the pleasure of sampling this entire collection + their ‘Eau de Negroni’ fragrance. Very exciting company with a great mission – I love that the proceeds from purchases go to earthquake relief efforts! I recently wore this sample on a trip I took with my girlfriend to Cozumel and it created a beautiful ‘scent memory’. The Vetiver, Corn Silk, and Oak combine to create something truly special, and I was pleasantly surprised by the performance on skin. I would love to be entered to win a full bottle! It would pare perfectly with the Mezcal Manhattan’s Iike to drink on weekends. Please ship to Pittsburgh, PA If I win!

  • I enjoyed reading about the sense of “terroir” around Kelly’s perfumes. Smoky, spicy, earthy, and creamy sounds right up my alley! I’d love to win a bottle of Mezcal Roja. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Great review by Hernando. I love the concept behind Kelly+ Jones Mezcal Roja. On my trip to Mexico last year I tried Mezcal and it was something so different than anything that I had tried before, it was not something that I loved inmediately, but grew on amya through the days.
I love that here it has tequila accords and that it is made in Oaxaca, the bottles are eco friendly and that Mexico can be represented in this amazing fragrance. I really hope to win this fragrance.

  • I’ve been fascinated by the Kelly + Jones Mezcal series of perfumes since you started covering them last year. I really enjoy mezcal for its smoky qualities, but I haven’t tried enough to notice the differences from one spirit to another, and I like the idea of these Kelly + Jones perfumes capturing all the nuances that tasting a limited selecton of mezcals cannot. I can’t wait to try Roja, with it’s woody and grassy emphasis, an uncommon corn silk note (which I’ve enjoyed in other scents), and sweet Cacao blossom. Great review, Hernando.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • One of the reasons I enjoy this blog on fragrance is to experience new fragrances and whole new lines/houses. I have never heard of this one, and by the sound of it they have some excellent things going on in the lab there. Love the creativity of their fragrances. Hope to get to try this. Thanks. GS

I enjoyed reading about what exactly mezcal is. I regret not trying this spirit when I traveled to Oaxaca years ago. I respect Kelly Jones for drawing attention to the indigenous history of mezcal. I am intrigued by the cornsilk notes in the fragrance. I imagine that vetiver and cacao blossom blend well together.

Hernando did a wonderful job with this review. I love to see brand that finds a way to blend passion, purpose and perfumery! There’s no doubt after reading Hernando’s review that Kelly + Jones is all about that. It makes the experience of the fragrances so much more enjoyable to know the story behind a house as well as the work they do outside of their fragrance for the good of others. The composition of Mezcal Roja sounds beautiful and I would love to try it and others from the house.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m definitely interested to try a fragrance from Kelly Jones. I became very intrigued to try this fragrance when Hernando said “As a Senior Contributor at ÇaFleureBon and a Senior Wine Specialist and Wine Consultant, I’m aware of the fragrance brands that mine the spirit world but the caliber of Kelly+ Jones’s Mezcal Collection floored me.” Also, I became further intrigued when Hernando said: “More than anything here, Kelly + Jones Mezcal Roja imparts a form of “terroir”” because I can like fragrances which accurately capture the terroir. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Outstanding review by Hernando’s with detailed description of this fragrance. Vetiver and cocoa with tequila please sign me up. Corn silk that rounds the edges for creaminess. Thanks for the giveaway. I am in CA, USA..

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the beautiful review Hernando.

I love reading Kelly Jones’ story. It’s always fascinating to see a scent arise from an olfactive memory based on food and more specifically alcohol. Mezcal has a lot of nuances that are perhapsdifficult for perfumery, but Kelly has managed to tame them into beautiful scents.

I love the packaging as well.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Hernando’s review of  Kelly +Jones Mezcal Roja. I enjoyed learning about the USA based Indie house as well as Mezcal which translates into oven cooked Agave. Agave plants that are very common in Mexico make Mezcal which comes across witj notes of sugar, herbs, salt, fruit, and citrusy, with a prominent smoky note. Kelly + Jones have created an entire line of Mezcal based fragrances which I would love to try based on Hernando’s detailed review. I am from the USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Hernando! What I enjoyed about Hernando’s review was learning that the fragrances are blended with fifty essential oils and naturals. I love both natural-heavy and complex perfumes so this one hits all the right notes for me! it definitely sounds like a must try! I live in the US.
