Kelly and Jones Notes of Riesling Reserve

Kelly and Jones Notes of Riesling Reserve

Creating a concept where there is no precedence is a challenge and Kelly Jones did just that with her Notes of Wine Collection, five fragrances based on five wine varietals that launched in 2012. The original Notes Collection consisted of five wine varietals, Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.

As a Senior Wine Specialist at one of Manhattan’s premier wine stores, my expertise was put to the test when Kelly Jones asked me to assist in selecting the appropriate wines to pair up with her five fragrances for the Kelly and Jones inaugural launch event at Ardesia Wine Bar in New York City in 2012.

Overshadowed by Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, consumers have long been perplexed by the Riesling, while being a favorite of wine connoisseurs and collectors. Discovered in Germany, Riesling is grown with much success in Alsace, Austria, South Australia, Washington State, and the Finger Lakes. The varietal is admired for its orchard flavors of apricot, nectarine, and pear and features strong floral aromas and a flavor profile ranging from fruity and sweet to crisp and dry. When young, the wines are often described as tasting clean, racy, and bright.

Ten years later, Kelly and Jones has re-launched the reformulated Reserve Collection of Riesling, Cabernet, and Chardonnay (her best-seller). So, if you sampled the original Riesling, you will appreciate this version. Overall, the scent has an enhanced brightness. By using two new IFF captives, Helvimor© and Cyclemax,© they bring out a juicier feel to the fragrance while staying true to the original formula. The reformulation also makes it more sustainable. And, with the use of natural materials in the formula, the modification of a few of the accords gives it a velvety feel.

Kelly and Jones Notes of Riesling Reserve is a fragrance inspired by the aromas of Riesling wine. The scent is spot on for the Spring and Summer months. It’s lively, versatile, and comfortable to wear. There is a happiness that emanates at the top which I ascribe to Lime Zest. The splendid floral property I attribute to the Lychee note. And with just a whisper of sweetness, almost honey-like, the peach adds body while coercing its fruit to jump out. Rounding it out, the Elderflower has that shade of green spiciness that wraps all the notes and elevates them. The fragrance is like the German Riesling style which tilts toward being off-dry.

It was over last weekend walking up Park Avenue that I discerned how well the Notes of Riesling Reserve blended in with the tulips and cherry blossoms. When smelling the tulips up close, I sensed the citrus, honey, and green-like aromas, and the scent of the cherry blossom subtle that it may be, has is a perceived bitter and green aroma. A fragrance inspired by the aromas of Riesling wine created especially to pair with the wine in your glass.

Notes: Farmers Market Peach | Elderflower | Wild Ginger | Lychee | Lime Zest

  • Great review by Hernando.
I have not tried any Kelly and Jones perfume yet but this RIESLING Reserve seems amazing. I love that the floral notes are very present here and it is a very green fragrance. I would love to give it a try soon.

The concept of a fragrance inspired by Riesling wine sounds like a fun challenge in today’s perfumery. This sounds like something my wife might enjoy, but also something I might be interested in wearing on a warm spring day myself. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I really, really enjoyed Hernando’s knowledgeable discussion about the Riesling grape and the various styles of Riesling wine produced in different regions. I love wine and learned a lot through my friend Gloria Maroti, former director of education at Wine Spectator. My favorites are the ones balancing the fruits with minerality and acidity, generally from Austria, Germany & Alsace region of France. I’m incredibly intrigued by this fragrance’s concept and notes!
    In the U.S. 🙂 🙂 🙂 <3 <3 <3

  • This just sounds delightful!!
Riesling is one of my favorite wines for the summer months.
I like Hernando’s impression that ‘There is a happiness that emanates at the top’.
I love joyful scents in the summer months.
    Thank you for the drawing.

  • Hernando did a beautiful job describing the notes in the fragrance which is especially helpful for someone like me. I really like the Lime Zest and lychee for sweetness in this fragrance and I’m interested in seeing how spicy the Elderflower give to the fragrance. From TX, USA.

  • As a wine and perfume lover, I find this concept of pairing wine and fragrance delightful. From the review, it sounds like this scent will be perfect for the blooms of spring, something I have been looking for in a new scent. I’ve tried both Chardonnay and Mezcal Roja from Kelly and Jones (and loved them both) but I haven’t yet tried this one, and I would love to. Thanks for the intriguing review! I’m in the U.S.

  • Summer and wine sipping, love it! I like the idea of a Lychee note in Reisling Reserve. I’ve tasted their flowery aroma and try to seek them out at my local market during the summer months. Mich USA

  • I love the fruitiness and floral qualities of a good Riesling, particularly as the weather warms up, so I’m really interested to see how these manifest in a fragrance! I also appreciated Hernando’s summary of the changes included in the reformulation. I am located in New York, in the US.

Great review! I haven’t heard of this brand, but I love the idea of wine inspired fragrance, and I love lychee as a note. Thanks so much for the opportunity! From USA

  • Sipping wine and summer is so relaxing and pleasurable. Great review! I haven’t heard of this brand, the idea of a wine inspired fragrance has me interested. New Jersey, USA

  • Peaches, lychee, elderflower…yum! Sounds like a wonderfully fruity offering, Hernando wrote about it being lively and comfortable a wear, which makes it sound like it would be prefectly suited for work during the hot summer months. I live in VA, USA.

Kelly and Jones “Notes of Riesling Reserve” sounds like a fragrance I’d love to try. I can love lime in fragrances: it’s one of my favorite notes. I want to see what the green spiciness from the elderflower is like. Also, I’m interested to see what the sweetness is like from the peach. It sounds like a fragrance I’d like to wear during the warmer part of the year. I would like to try something from this company: they seem to make interesting fragrances. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I am curious as to how a perfume paired with a wine would smell like. We have heard of food and wine pairings but not much of perfume and wine pairings. From Hernando’s review of Notes of Riesling Reserve, I like that it matches cherry blossom and tulip notes. It seems to be ideal for spring and summer months, as Hernando writes. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • Riesling is my favorite white varietal wine. Christina Christie seems to have hit the profile just right with notes of peach, elderflower, ginger and lime zest. The lychee adds an interesting floral note, one I don’t usually ascribe to Riesling, but I can absolutely see how it works here. I love Kelly + Jones idea of composing fragrances based on different wine varietals, There are so many nuances to capture. MD, USA

  • I’m always looking for a new Spring, Summer fragrance. Never had the opportunity to try the original version this sounds great.

Lemon Zest and honey sweetness sounds fragrant to my nose and tasty in my mouth. Although I’m not a wine connoisseur I can imagine being one after a sniff of this.

    Thanks from the USA

I love Hernando’s spring photo. I like to drink Riesling on a warm spring day. Not to dry. I’d love to see how wine is interpreted into fragrances. I don’t think I’ve smelled a tulip before, Elderflower sounds like a natural for a German style wine. I am not familiar with this line of fragrance. I’d love to try. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • mmerline says:

I appreciate that Kelly Jones continues to focus on a trademark theme for her fragrances, including a range of wine and mescal expressions. Reislings are often too sweet for my amateur wine palate, but Notes of Riesling Reserve sounds quit wearable, translating the green-floral tinged fruit into a lively nose that probably suits a sunny summer day. Excellent review, Hernando. I haven’t tried any Kelly and Jones fragrances yet, but the brand is high up on my list after reading about them here. I’m particularly intrigued by the Ea de Mezcal series.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Great review and scent profile by Hernando who describes a happy lively summer scent. What I enjoyed with this review is as a fragrance that was centered around the aromas of Riesling wine and me being a connoisseur is a perfect fit. I love a white wine particularly Chardonnay’s on a nice summer’s evening. Thanks for the giveaway. Greetings from the USA.

Thanks for the wonderful review Hernando.

I love the label on this fragrance. The notes in this are quite beautiful – fruity, floral and I’m assuming a nice dose of Aldehydes to make it zing. I do like the use of wild ginger and the fact that this fragrance actually has some indication of dryness.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • thanks Hernando for the good review.

Wine is one of the things I’m trying to get into as I get older. The description Hernando gives has me thinking about a warm summer evening with friends over for a meal. The description makes the fragrance sound green and floral. Anything with peach has my nose immediately. One of my favorite notes. Now lychee is a note that I do not believe I have had my nose on when used in perfumery but I do love the fruit so I am excited so see how they smell together.

  • foreverscents says:

Riesling Reserve sounds like a very juicy perfume with wonderful floral aromas. I have always loved a good German Riesling, especially in the spring when the days grow warmer. It’s just so easy to quaff a good Rieling, much like I am sure it’s easy to wear Kelly and Jones fragrances.
    I live in the USA.

  • johnmadison says:

Kelly Jones Riesling Reserve really feels like it would be splendid to wear this Summer. Its juicy brightness from the list of delicious notes I can only imagine comes together beautifully. I am so curious of the lychee note and how it comes through in this perfume. I would love to wear this to a local winery I go to often North of the Twin Cities, and one of my favorite selections is their Riesling…A thing like that 🙂

  • Hernando’s description of Riesling’s lychee note (one of my favorite fruits both to sniff and to eat) and its clean, velvety feel, Riesling sounds tremendous. After the week I’ve had, I could definitely go for a glass (or spritz) of Riesling right now! Thanks for the draw. Indiana, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed Hernando’s review of Kelly and Jones Riesling New Vintage. This Reserve wine collection sounds amazing. This sweet, floral, aromatic, and zesty Riesling composition sounds like something I would really love. I really enjoyed learning more about Kelly and Jones with Hernando’s detailed post. I am from the USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Very compelling review Hernando! What I enjoyed about Hernando’s review of Kelly and Jones RIESLING New Vintage is how he accurately describes Riesling as overshadowed by Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to the average consumer while being a darling of wine connoisseurs and collectors. Riesling, particularly Alsatian Riesling is pretty much my favorite white wine, so I can’t wait to try a fragrance based upon it instead of the more popular Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.. Furthermore Riesling’s natural floral character make it a perfect inspiration for a sensational fragrance. I live in the US.
