KAJAL SAWLAJ Review (Chris Maurice) + Spicy Leather Draw

KAJAL SAWLAJ

KAJAL SAWLAJ, photo by Sebastian©

In 1919, Caron introduced Tabac Blond, one of the first fragrances to use leather and carnation in perfumery. But it wasn’t until a few years later in the early 1920s, that Francois Coty and Vincent Roubert launched Knize Ten the iconic men’s fragrance (also using carnation), which most experts consider to be the BEST men’s leather fragrance in history  and was worn by nobility and risk takers for nearly a century. KAJAL SAWLAJ, like its early predecessors, features leather and carnation as dominant accords. Carnation is known for its rich spicy clove-like aroma  which enhances the rugged, a little rough around the edges leather accord in KAJAL SAWLAJ. The perfumer (Chris Maurice aka Christian Carbonel) and owners of KAJAL had a particular  man in mind when creating KAJAL SAWLAJ- someone who was at the top of his game, a leader and not afraid to stand out from the crowd. SAWLAJ makes its presence known the minute you spray it and then firmly announces  “I’m the Boss”. And guys, that can mean a “Lady Boss” –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief.

Note: SAWLAJ is in the KAJAL FIDDAH collection

Loved learning about Coty Knize Ten from the intro. I liked Sebastian description of the carnation note especially as I wore L’air du temps for years I live in Hebron IN I never heard of Kajal. I’m surprised.

  • The history behind leather and carnation perfumery, along with the Knize Ten history was interesting. Didn’t know that Coty was a part of it. Sebastian’s reviews are always descriptive and helpful. Im familiar with Sawlaj, i had a sample. First wearing, I thought it smelled like marijuana for some reason. So i almost gave it away. On a second wearing, my wife commented that she liked it , and its grown on me ever since. Very long lasting. Had no idea it had carnation in it. Sawlaj, Joorie, Jihan, Yasmina and Homme…all are stellar!

SEBASTIAN gave a very good and honest review. He broke down the fragrance very well, and giving good details about what the highlights are (Carnation and overdose of Leather), and the low-lights (patchouli, vetiver, rose, sweetness, etc). And Michelyn’s introduction was well done, giving us some good history on carnation and leather combos, and who would wear such.

From YouTube reviews, I am quite familiar with Kajal, and in the near future, I will be picking up wish list of samples: Homme, Lamar, Dahab, Sareef, Warek, WARDÉ, Jihan, Joorie, Yasmina and, if I don’t win, Sawlaj.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I did not have the chance to try KAJAL SAWLAJ yet. In general, I like perfumes that based on Labdanum and Bergamot, but I’m wondering how it smells when the base note is Oakmoss, Vanilla, and Vetiver. I hope to get it 🙂

  • I enjoyed the description of the notes in the review and the introduction. I live in Portugal and I am not familiar with Kajal Perfumes.

  • Another insightful review by Sebastian. This one sounds right in my alley. I have not tried any fragrance from Kajal yet, but their fragrances sounds interesting and high quality to me and I’m definitely gonna try them when I have the chance. Thank you for the generosity of this giveaway. I live in France.

  • I find Sebastian to haved reviewed Sawlaj very well, almost to the point smelling the fragrance at a distance, very interesting notes, really liked also Michelyn’s introduction with great information I didn’t know pertaining to Leather perfumes, I live in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

  • Mmm, the notes as Sebastian describes them sound delicious. I like leather fragrances, but I don’t think I have leather in combination with carnations in my collection. Patchouli can be delightful with leather. Vetiver, of course, is always the winner. I like that Michelyn says it can be “Lady Boss”, too 🙂 I have, interestingly, never heard of Kajal parfums; maybe, this will be an opportunity to change this 🙂 I live in Maryland.

  • Great review from Sebastian. Learning about the the history behind leather and carnation in perfumery as awl as the Knize Ten was very interesting. I would love to be entered into the giveaway, I really do enjoy the note of leather and most of my fragrance collection includes leather based fragrances. Blessings from London UK

  • Bradley Griffeth says:

Sebastian’s description of this “boss” spicy leather scent was very intriguing to me, so I would love to win this. Thank you for the chance!

  • This one seems like it ticks all the boxes… leather, woody, spicy, floral. I’m intrigued to say the least. Watching Sebastian hold the bottle I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the flacon design. Reminiscent of Gilded Age architecture with the lines of the star. Would love to win this guy.

  • From MICHELYN’S INTRODUCTION I liked the historical data. When I saw 1919 I was amazed.

Because I’m still learning about perfumes and it’s interesting to discover that in those days people made interesting perfumes. I didn’t even think people used perfume in 1919.

    This makes history more fun.

From Sebastian’s YouTube video I liked the perfume bottle up close.
I like how he explains the notes of the perfume.

I was searching for a masculine floral scent. But not too floral.
I like that it is a spicey floral and not so sweet perfume.

I like that he discovered this perfume 2,5 years ago because that means that he had enough time to understant , to really feel the perfume.

I am from Romania and I would be honored to receive a bottle of  KAJAL SAWLAJ. Thank you for making this giveaway.

  • Phaedon Couniniotis says:

Sebastian gives a very accurate and well described opinion. I was most interested in the fact the he describes a masculine perfum with leather notes. Sounds appealing to me in my research of a new perfume.

  • Tee Adegunju says:

Great review ! Never heard of this house but as always your reviews are spot on… I am a great fan of leather fragrances and will check this one out.

  • Sebastian’s description of this sounded wonderful, but until reading the intro I didn’t think of Knize Ten (my favorite leather fragrance that I own) has having carnation. I was already intrigued by Sebastian’s review, but reading the Knize Ten connection made me want to try this one even more. This is the first I’ve heard of Kajal. I live in Oklahoma, USA.

  • I really enjoyed Michelyn’s knowledge on leather fragrances, something ive never known so it taught me something new. I always enjoy Sebastian’s reveiws, he’s very knowledgeable and thorough. Ive never heard of Kajal as i am new to the fragrance world, sounds like something i would teally enjoy wearing.

  • I enjoyed that Michelyn mentioned a lady boss, lol. I can definitely relate. The scent of spicy carnations is the best! Sebastian mentioned leather and patchouli with spicy carnation. I’m a fan of the spicy, so I’m definitely interested. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • From Michelyn: I never knew that Knize 10 and Tabac blond had leather and carnation.
From Sebastian: great video describing how he thought it was going to be patchouli and it wasn’t.

  • Michael Bullock says:

Great review and I enjoyed it and I wanna be entered into the giveaway because this fragrance sounds really good and have a blessed night.

  • I have a small decant of vintage Caron Tabac Blond and I love the carnation and leather blend. I’ve never tried Knize Ten but the combination of those two notes is intoxicating. Kajal Sawlaj sounds like it’s made for a boss and I would love to try it. Sebastian really makes it come alive in his description. Commenting from MD. USA.

  • omar_awad_1@hotmail.com says:

Gorgeous bottle and I am somewhat familiar with the brand.. Cleveland, OH

  • This fragrance sounds amazing and a masterpiece I really liked the intro story of this fragrance “someone who isn’t afraid stand out from the crowd” I one hundred percent relate to that I wear fragrances everyday that most people don’t know about I wanna be different and I really enjoyed sebastians video as always he takes a true interest in these fragrances he reviews he has a real passion for fragrances just like I do. I live Wichita Kansas and I have not heard of Kajal fragrances but I want too.

  • I enjoyed Sebastian taking us through the different phases and levels of this fragrance along with its note comparisons to clove that give it a spicy touch. I also appreciated Michelyn’s mention of Knize Ten and classic carnation leather scents, I haven’t smelled that one yet but it has long been on my to try list. I live in Florida, USA

  • milton 1978 says:

Mr Sebastián gives really good and insightful reviews. I love leather secnt fragrances. I live in falls church Virginia

  • Always great to have a fragrance that conveys this powerful energy.

What I liked most about Sebastian’s analysis is the description and analysis of the notes. This helps a lot.

Michelyn’s indroduction has always been a great reminder of the story, but the part I liked the most was the reminder that this fragrance can also be for Lady Boss. I love this breaking down of barriers.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to win a bottle
    Michel

  • I really appreciate Michelyn’s intro. I didn’t know about the Tabac Blond or Knize Ten who started everyones love for carnation leather combos. I really like the smell of carnations, so listening to Sebastian’t review was really interesting to me. I like that rose is not the main flower here and I like him mentioning that he smells cloves, because I love how they smell. Carnation is a beautiful flower and it works very well with the leather. I would really like to smell Sawlaj. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Edward Jobin says:

Have to confess midway through the presentation I did a quick check at basenotes to see if there were other opinions on this fragrance as I like many of Sebastian’s presentations and recommendations but it helps to get a second or third opinion in which i quickly found there were no sources listed as sellers other than ebay samples. o thank you Sebastian for giving us a link. Not at all familiar with this line but I do like leathery boozy scents.

  • patrick_348 says:

I liked Michelyn’s brief history of the use of leather and carnation together in fragrances and her urging of women not to be afraid of it. Sebastian made the fragrance sound super appealing and from his description I imagine it to be big and bold but not offensive. It also sounds ike a suit-and-tie scent. I have heard alll kinds of good things about Kajal fragrances, but have never tried one. I would like to. I am in the USA, in North Carolina.

  • Steve Eisenfeld says:

Floral, spicy, leather. What’s not to like there? Every component he listed sounds wonderful, great description overall. Always enjoy a little history as well. Thanks Michelyn. Can’t say I’m familiar with Kajal, but after hearing about this product I’ll be doing some looking at their other products.

  • I always love Sebastian’s way of describing scents! I’m hoping to win this one! I also loved the little history lesson given here about Caron’s early use of leather and carnation. Denver, CO

  • Pushpal Paul says:

From Michelyn’s writeup I was thoroughly amazed to understand the history of leather in fragrances. I knew leather has been used in fougere fragrance also since some time.
From Sebastian review the main note that got me intrigued is the spicey leather with the sweetness of vanilla and benzoin. I have own leather pathchouly and vetiver scents and the notes listed here are very interesting.

I have known this house from fellow frag group members and would like to participate in giveaway.
Am staying in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A beautiful description by Michelyn this fragrance sounds like a statement maker and I am intrigued by the notes especially cloves, carnations and leather described by Sebastian this fragrance has captured my heart and soul. I am familiar with the house of Kajal and master perfumer Chris Maurice a perfect match. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Sebastian it’s one of the best in the branch, I really love the way it explained and brake down the fragrances. I never experienced a kajal fragrance so far. I’m from Romania

Intrigued by the notes and especially the use of carnation and leather and how this has become an iconic marriage of notes in perfumery. I was interested how Sebastian described the notes especially Carnation and Leather and the clove like nuances that he got from this fragrance. I am sorry that I am not familiar with this house. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I am not familiar with Kajal Perfumes, but I am here because of Sebastian’s great reviews. I am intrigued by his description of the patchouli complimenting the heart of leather and carnation. I like Michelyn’s comment on lady boss. Watching from Pennsylvania, USA.

  • I love spicy leather and patchouli combinations and am intrigued by Sebastians review of Sawlaj.

  • MIGUEL URBINA says:

Sebastian is one of the best perfume reviewers, perfume information at its best with him

  • Jorge vargas says:

Jorge from Springfield Massachusetts, I liked Sabastian’s review , first time follower . I enjoyed his breakdown of the perfume, Michelyn’s intro was great as well.

  • I happen to have both Tabac Blond and Knize Ten in vintage formulas. Sebastian says KAJAL SAWLAJ has both dominant notes of leather and carnation in about equal amount. It is a leathery fragrance with an ambery top and very masculine. Spicy carnation lasts almost the entire duration of perfume. USA

  • The historical aspect of Michelyn’s intro. is valuable to me; I enjoy learning about those kinds of things. In regards to Sebastian’s review, I appreciate how he describes the fragrance and how the notes pair with each other. I appreciate how he spoke highly of the carnation note in this fragrance. I’ve heard of Kajal, but I haven’t tried any of their releases yet. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Thanks again to Sebastian for the great review. I am not familiar with the brand. I enjoy leather fragrances when executed and blended properly. The carnation note sounds great – Chris Maurice is a master! Thank you to Michelyn for also including Chris’s other name – Christian Carbonel! From Canada.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Never tried anything feom the house , would love to be on the winning end of this one , new york , usa .

  • MapleHedgehog says:

Sebastian always has great reviews and an opinion i truly value. As he described Sawlaj as a Floral Spicy Masculine Leather, i knew i was going to buy it. I’m brand new to fragrances and being a 40 year old playing catch up, I have only been seeking out the best of the best. I have my Tobacco, my Oud, my Gourmand……now i need to fill that Leather gap.

I think what really caught my attention was when Sebastian read the quote off of Kajal’s website, “A fragrance that is assertive and at the same time attractive.” I felt like those were my words describing the kind of leather scent I’m looking for. Even as Michelyn Camen puts it, “Carnation is known for its rich spicy clove-like aroma which enhances the rugged, a little rough around the edges leather.” Reading that gives me that Gut Feeling that this is a Must have…. seeing as i am a rugged, rough around the edges kinda man myself.

Oh yes, this will soon be added to my Fragrance Wardrobe.

Much love to you all from the Great White North.

    Lee

  • Amazing how Sebastian does great reviews after watching you want to get your nose on the fragrance.

  • I liked Michelyn’s introduction about how old the fragrance is and how it is considered one of the best leather fragrances every. Also I liked Sebastian’s review about how it has good leather and carnation accords.

  • I’ve been into the art of perfumery since 2011 with a quite long break between 2016 – 2020. I found Sebastian when I returned to Fragrance Community in summer 2020, and I’ve been following him passionately since. I’ve also watched many of his reviews and collaborations from previous years.
What I love about his reviews and is also encompassed in the review of Kajal Sawlaj is an education-focused way of presenting fragrances with in-depth decoding of the singular notes and then bringing them together by masterfully describing their ways of interacting, interconnecting,..
Since Sebastian is usually quite generous with labeling fragrance unisex, his emphasizing of ultramasculinity of Kajal Sawlay made the fragrance even more appealing and intriguing to me. I’ve worn some typically masculine fragrances in my past, so I am confident I could pull it off, especially after reading Michelyn’s blessing. 🙂 I am also pleasantly surprised about the fact that well- known and still popular Tabac Blond by Caron was introduced more than 80 years ago.
I must admit I had never heard of Kajal Perfums before watching Sebastian’s review. Thanks to CaFleureBon & Sebastian for introducing the brand and generosity of Kayal Pefumes to host a draw. Cheers from Slovenia!

  • Love Love Kajal Homme, so was excited to hear about Sawjal, and would love to own one. Am excited about the future of this company. Sebastian’s reviews as always on point, informative and honest opinion as always, am a big fan and we have similar tastes. I am based in Dubai, and Kajal scents fit well in this kind of vibe. Good job guys, keep it up and happy new year.

  • I love Knize Ten and I find it great to know that quality perfumes doesn’t always have to cost a lot. KAJAL SAWLAJ sounds like a very powerful scent, especially because it is big and bold, the wearer’s presence is portrayed as “The Big Boss”. So yes count me in, living in the EU

  • I adore the brand , joorie / Yasmina & jihan are all sensational.

I always appreciate Sebastian’s insight into fragrances, it’s very refreshing to not just hear a notes list but he also gives his perspective on what her perceives and other notes that may not be listed. So it always gives me a better idea of what a fragrance may smell like.

Michelyn’s intro was so informative on aspects of the fragrance history that I was unaware of 🙂

    I’m from Israel.

  • As always, Sebastians take on a perfume is just exquisitely detailed, while not being overly long or drawn out. But Michele’s intro made a great point of it Sawlaj smelling somewhere in the vein of Knize Ten which peaked my interest in the Sawlaj immensely! I like in Zagreb, Croatia, I sample Kajal Homme and Lamar and bought a bottle of Homme, so Sawlaj would be a great addition to the collection! 😀

  • I just found out about this house about a month ago. One of the shops here in Melbourne will be bringing in the full range next week. I can’t wait to try the Fiddah range and this is my first time commenting here. Interesting mix of leather and floral, definitely intrigued. Christian Carbonnel is my favourite perfumer, so I know this is will be a winner!

  • Thank you Michelyn and Sebastian for the intro and the review. I like the idea of a “leader’s fragrance” from the intro 🙂 In addition, Sebastian as always gives a thorough breakdown of the notes which all sound superb – I’ve also had a yearning for patchouli and the fact that it also has rose and carnations blended with leather notes makes Sawlaj sound very intriguing. I’m in USA

  • bigscoundrel says:

I liked how Sebastian explained the spice and leather coming together. The carnation mentions in his review and in the intro make me very interested in Swalaj. I have not tried Kajal yet. New Jersey USA

  • Koh Min Jie says:

I enjoyed Sebastian’s succinct and sweet breakdown of the fragrance with the notes and a brief description of what it smells like together with other facts that he know, this helps round out the understanding and appreciation for the perfume and not just for the smell alone.

Michelyn’s introduction was also short and to the point, giving me all that I needed to know such as the perfumer, inspiration and genre that really helps me get a good idea of where this fragrance stands and what it smells like.

I live in Singapore and sadly there is not much of a presence here as of yet but have been intrigued by Kajal for a long time and would love to be able to sample/own some of them.

  • What I liked about Sebastian’s review is how he equated the smell of cloves to the smell of carnations. I had never really thought about that, but I have to agree now that I think about it. Clove is a note that I’m just starting to get into, so maybe I need to look at carnation too. Michelyn also points out the carnation/clove similarity. I also liked how she taught me a little bit about leather fragrance history.

I am familiar with this house, but only from watching reviews on several of their fragrances. I have not yet tried any of them, although I have looked at some of their sample sets on their website. I’m in IL, USA for the giveaway.

  • Zoran Loncarevic says:

Once again a very interesting and insightful review from Sebastian. Unfortunately, I have never smelled a scent of kohl but this one piqued my interest. Thank you for that and greetings from Germany.

  • Sebastian piqued my interest with this one. I own Kajal homme, one of my favorite fresh and spicy scents. His description of a spicy leather with the floral component sounds divine. Great review as usual!

  • I’ve tried them all at Perfumology and ultimately picked up Yasmina. From the Fiddah line, I liked Fiddah itself the best (warm gourmand with 24hr+ staying power). However, I only tried Sawlaj on paper, but it is among the standouts. They’re all so evenly matched and strong at that… the ones I didn’t like as were the more fresher takes.

Knize Ten, I’ve heard as being a definitive leather for men, but I haven’t been able to get a hold of it. That’s the knowledge that Sebastian and Michelyn bring to the table. Michelyn didn’t mention vintage in particular, but one would assume. And even if I don’t win, I’ll have to try this one out again along with Alujain. If you like dark, sweet, and spicy then Kajal is your house. Thanks.

  • Ooh yes. I want to smell like the Lady Boss! I just missed getting a promotion and when we are finally back in the office, I’d love to be wearing something commanding that lets them know they made a mistake. lol. Sebastian is always wonderful, his breakdown of a scent really lets you almost smell it through the screen. With Michelyn’s intro, I learned about the history of carnation mixed with leather. I am in the US. Thanks!

  • I wish I could’ve smelled Knize’s Ten when it was in its prime. Leather is definitely a classic note that denotes nobility imo. Most military leaders and conquerors of old wore leather into battle after all, and adorned their households with leather furnishings. Very much familiar with the brand ever since Sebastian starting talking about them on his channel. Kajal Homme got quite a bit of praise early last year. Definitely agree with Sebastian that eugenol enhances the leather accord. I’m a big fan of clove scents myself, but it certainly sounds like a strong combination in this one, especially with the dry and slightly smoky facets. Love that Sebastian didn’t beat around the bush and said that it’s a straight up masculine scent. lol Although a smell will always be a smell to me and never represent any particular sex, I think most people might agree that the combination of notes would still be associated with men these days. Boss men? Well….. lol From Canada

  • The best men´s leather fragrance will be a tie between Cuir de Russie and Knize Ten… both are leaders and I don´t have a favourite….but the carnation only appears in Knize… Kajal Sawlaj sounds an amazing leather perfume.. a “Boss” fragrance or Lady Boss as Michelyn said. I never realized the clove smells like carnation… but listening Sebastian , I´ve realized that in spanish Clavo (Clove in spanish) and Clavel (Carnation in spanish) have the same root, and that must be becouse the similarities in odeur. Anyway , a great combination with leather and a perfect choice in these freezing days in Spain.. so Macho and Boss man. I am from Spain, EU.

I found out about CaFleureBon and Sebastian from A Nose Knows/nas de nas, my favorite romanian perfume channel. I like Sebastian’s honest reviews and his 20 tops, but nobody beats Dana Sandu at describing perfumes, sorry:))).
Now is the first time I heard about Kajalperfumes, but would love to discover their fragrances.I live in London.

  • Sebastian’s brilliant breakdown of the fragrance with the notes and a brief description of what it smells like, helps me understand and appreciate this beautiful perfume.

I enjoy reading Michelyn’s historic knowledge of fragrances and their perfumers. It makes me connect to the brand more when I know more about them.

I live in the UK and have tried Lamar and Homme. I did not like Lamar, but I love Homme.

  • wandering_nose says:

Assertive and attractive, exuding character and authority – the note from the brand quoted by Sebastian had me hooked along with the amazing and uncompromizing notes of spicy, floral carnation and dry, smoky leather supported by patchouli, rose, vetiver and oakmoss. What an impressive, boss – like bottle too! Michelyn’s intro has cast more light on the trailbrazer leather – carnation fragrances that shaped the history of perfumery. I haven’t tried kajal fragrances as of yet but they are high on my to try list. Based in Ireland

  • Enjoyed the historical note by Michelyn on use of carnations and leather in fragrance, especially the bit about Caron’s Tabac Blond being the first to use this combination, and about Knize Ten considered to be the BEST men’s leather fragrance in history. Don’t have much experience with Kajal perfumes, or carnation-based fragrances, so Sebastian’s review of Sawlaj was informative, especially about clove/spicy notes coming from carnations. Seems to be a very lovely fragrance. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I’m all about smelling like a lady boss these days! I love Sebastian’s reviews and I love carnation as well as leather fragrances. This sounds fantastic with the rose and patch mixed in. I’ve not yet tried this house but I really love those bottles and caps! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Who doesn’t want to smell like a boss?! I really like leather in fragrances but I’ve never experienced carnation. Character and authority are traits that I value highly. Appreciate the review by Sebastian and Michelyn’s writeup. I’m familiar with the house but have never sampled their fragrances. Best from Virginia, USA!

  • I enjoy the carnation note in fragrance ( I love Caron Bellodgia) and I would love to see how it combines with leather here. Also, I have heard so much about Kajal, but haven’t had a chance to try any of their creations yet. I enjoyed Michelyn’s insightful introduction: I always appreciate some historical background and I’ve always wanted to try the vintage version of Caron Tabac Blonde. I also liked Sebastian’s description of the notes in this bold fragrance, a perfect wear for a true leader. I am in the USA.

  • Brian Rellergert says:

I enjoyed Sebastian’s review, and as soon as he mentioned leather and carnation, I knew I would love this fragrance. The mention of Knize Ten by Michelyn also piqued my interest.
    Thanks for the giveaways!

  • I really enjoyed learning about the history behind the carnation and leather pairing from Michelyn’s introduction. From Sebastian’s YouTube review, I liked how he gives the highlights of the fragrance and which parts of it stood out. I live in the US. I am only familiar with Kajal because it has been mentioned on Cafleurebon, but I have never been able to try it.

  • It’s intriguing how Sebastian emphasises that this is a masculine fragrance, and Michelyn points out that a “lady boss” can also wear it, and the Kajal site also emphasizes that this is for a “boss” type of person, though they underplay the gender angle. Aside from all that, this could possibly also be called a chypre, no? I don’t know anything about Kajal perfumes but would like to learn more. Also, having watched several of the videos, I feel like I can trust Sebastian’s reviews and recommendations.
    (USA)

  • I felt this is a fun and interesting fragrance to learn more about thanks to Sebastian. This is not a house I am familiar with, but the idea of spicy clove-like carnations and leather dancing around with some other spices sounds really nice. I like big and bold not too sweet fragrances so this sounds right up my alley too. Hopefully I will get a good whiff of that little hint of lemon before the Labdanum and amber kick in!

I did not know that in 1919 there was such a fragrance with carnation and leather, nor did I know that Knize Ten was one of the best leather fragrances to ever exist. That blew my mind! Thank you for the in depth research on this style of perfume. It sounds wonderfully masculine and bold, what’s not to love?

    Cheers!

  • Wishing you happy New year. The perfume looks solid. The way Sebastian explained felt more realistic, the best part was we could Imagine the fragrance without even smelling them that’s where he stands out among other reviewers. I’m from India I Never heard about kajal perfumes, hope I see them in Indian markets soon.

  • I’m impressed that Knize Ten was created 100 years ago. I would love to wear Sawlaj and feel that “I’m the boss”. Nice review by Sebastian. Thanks for the opportunity. Regards from Mexico!

  • I really love Sebastian’s reviews because are always so accurate and on point, describing perfectly a fragrance and with all the relevant details. everything I smelled and compared to his reviews is exactly how I have imagined. I currently live in Romania.

  • Sebastian listed all the notes, but emphasized several times that carnation and leather are in the spotlight. I love both notes, but I don’t think I have experienced them together in the same perfume yet. I have to thank Michelyn for pointing out Tabac Blond in the introduction, the tip is much appreciated.
I am in Europe and so unfamiliar with Kajal, so far.
Thank you for the review and the draw!

  • I am familiar with scents combining leather and cloves, carnations less so. I enjoy leathery and spicy fragrances, although the Knize mentioned in the introduction was a bit too old-fashioned for me. Sebastian always gives a good description in reviews, I feel like I can trust his opinion. I am intrigued by the notes and I must admit the bottle itself looks gorgeous! I would like to be entered into the draw, I live in Finland. Thank you!

  • Such attention to detail is uncommon for $210 fragrance. “I’m the Boss” leather , presentation is second to none, I’m really eager to try it.
I’m a Barber , and i already wear Kajal Homme while working with clients. $185 well spent.
About what Sebastian said , Sawlaj could lean a bit masculine, but It’s early 2021 , not 1980. Sample and wear what you like . I like “Lady Boss” clarification by Michelyn.
Like I said I own Kajal Homme , and I need to explore more .
    Exquisite giveaway, thanks.

  • Leather and carnation sounds like a very fresh combination, so I was surprised to learn from Michelyn that it’s actually been a perfume combo for over 100 years! Also appreciated that Michelyn noted that this could work for a lady boss as well, as I love leather notes. Kajal is new to me but I appreciated how extensively Sebastian described the scent and his experience with it. I live in the US

  • I enjoyed the history of the use of carnation and leather and how it is used to invoke power in this creation in Michelyn’s introduction. And, I appreciated how Sebastian describes the spicy and clove-like scent the carnation brings to the fragrance. I live in the USA.

  • I loved the history – references of leather carnation perfumes. And great, very lucid description of the fragrance, I could almost smell it!
    I’m in Slovenia, EU

  • Navaro Whitfield says:

As usual Sebastian broke down the fragrance quite elegantly! This is very much my sent, leather/woodsie notes with lemon & Jasmine! Sounds Big boss vibes! Sounds like something Rick Ross with wear! Huhhh

  • Michael Prince says:

Michelyn, I loved the intro learning about the history of this combination of Leather and Carnation in fragrances that goes all the way back to 1919 with a Caron fragrance. Sebastian’s review of Kajal Sawlaj was very informative explaining each phase of the fragrance and what the actual notes are and what he is perceiving. The spicy floral carnation with leather sounds very unique and pleaant along with a smoky resinous quality and some woody earthy and sweet accents in the base. This sounds like a fragrance that would really appeal to my tastes. I have heard so many good things about Kajal fragrances most notably Pour Homme and Lamar. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Enjoyed the review and the bit of History that came with it. Haven’t tried many Kajal fragrances. I do like Kajal Homme and Lamar. They are Quality fragrances and Good looking bottles. I’m down to try this spicy leather. Thanks, Ca

  • From Michelyn’s wonderful introduction, I really enjoyed learning about the history behind the carnation and leather being used together in perfumery. It was interesting as always. From Sebastian’s YouTube review, I liked the way that he breaks down the fragrance in his review. He goes over what the fragrance does over time which is something I really appreciate. I live in Florida in the US and I am not personally familiar with Kajal Perfumes.

  • Juan_hernan says:

From Michelyn’s introduction, I really liked reading about how Tabac Blond was so instrumental in creating the leather and carnation pairing. I thought that that was so interesting since Tabac Blond was a fragrance I had only heard about but never tried. From Sebastian’s review, I liked the way he showed the viewers the bottle and gave a very nice description of the effects that each of the notes had on the person smelling it. I live in the US and I am not too familiar with Kajal Perfumes.

  • harum.manis says:

didn’t know what carnation is. so i am curious how it’s used in perfumery and how it blends with leather and other notes. Never have a sniff of any kajal’s but heard the name multiple times. Seems very respected house. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia.

  • Sounds really amazing thank you for the opportunity for the giveaway. Seb is an amazing reviewer very happy he hit 100,000 subscribers. Keep up the great work.

  • Claumarchini says:

I very much enjoyed both Michelyn’s introduction (love the lady boss!) as well as Sebastian’s review. It was very useful for me (just started to learn about niche and artistic perfumery) the association of carnations to clove: I was trying to imagine the scent and couldn’t get my head round it, but thinking about clove then I got the idea! I have never tried anything about Kajal yet, but I keep on reading about them (plus, the bottles are really beautiful!), so I’d really love to win Sawlaj! I live in Milan, Italy

  • enjoyed the review and intrigued to try this and others by Kajal.
The description was excellent, I can’t picture (not sure that’s the right work) how the patchouli would work…
    Happy New Year!

  • IvanVelikov says:

Whoever designer Kajal hired for creating the design of the bottles , he, or she did astonishing work. If I have to rate the bottle I’ll give it 100/100.
I have sample of Dahab I received in a FB group swap. Sweet juicy gourmand done really well . Smells natural to me, which is rare for gourmands.
SAWLAJ is appealing to me, because it’s both Alpha male/female fragrance, but unlike Knize Ten it’s up to date also with resins and a little bit of vanilla.
Also Knize Ten is one of my fathers favorite fragrances, I can say it’s really old school , especially the base.
Almost forgot , to me there’s no such thing as “gender” if we’re talking about fragrances. For example my girlfriend really likes leather, vetiver and boozy fragrances most consider masculine.
Thank you, such a great draw.

  • I really need to get my nose on the legendary Knize Ten. I love leather fragrances and I like that Sebastian says he smelled the carnation throughout. I wouldn’t mind smelling like a “lady” boss. I’m in the US and I’ve never tried this house.

  • Thanks Sebastian for honest and interesting review! He describes a masculine perfum with leather notes and dome historical information.
I liked Michelyn’s description about perfume of “boss”, perfume of leader.
I like soft leather, maybe I will fall in love with strong leather with carnation?

  • Being a Pastry Chef i absolutely love gourmands . After watching Sebastian video of Lamar I was instantly reminded of me making, and eating Vanilla Cake with strawberries and pineapple. I do it almost every day at my bakery. Long story short I now own it .
SAWLAJ is way different, a bit ruff around the edges leather fragrance , but just like Lamar it’s made for strong minded people.
Appreciate Sebastian review, and the giveaway campaign

THank you for the lovely review Sebastian.

I’ve heard of the house, but I’ve never smelt the fragrance.

I like the idea mixing up the Amalfi Lemon, with the labadanum and leather. Kind of makes me imagine a leathery chypre, but I suspect that this may be more of an oriental. As usual, I loved Sebastian’s detailed review and how he talks about the carnation in particular.

Michelyn – I looked at Tabac Blond and it sounds like such a beautiful fragrance. I didn’t know of it’s existence and I hope to sample it at some point. I just love the nod to historical perfumery that this perfume demonstrates.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Sawlaj sounds completely unisex, 100% . About what Michelyn said “And guys, that can mean a “Lady Boss” i completely agree
To me you should wear what you like . Bottle is fantastic, sounds like a different leather , but thankfully it’s not going into animalic territory. Sure I want it .
My sample of Dahab is all I’ve smelled from Kajal
    Thank you
Hopefully very soon I’ll be able to get back to my usual routine of non-stop back and forth between USA and Scotland
    Cheers from VA

  • I love leather fragrances! This one is quite interesting, but I wonder if it will make me feel like a Lady Boss. I have had carnations at home multiple times, but they have always smelled green to me. I wonder if this fragrance would bridge the gap between carnations and cloves to me, as Michelyn describes.
On the other hand, Sebastian mentioned the presence of Vetiver on the base, and I wonder how that would affect the spicy leather described as the main focus of this fragrance.
I have never tried any fragrances from Kajal, but I love the description of “Lamar” by “Experiencing Fragrances with Amina” on YouTube. I like that the brand seems to go for robust and complex fragrance profiles.
I would like to enter this draw.
    From USA.

  • Being a vain guy i was so impressed by Sebastian review of Kajal Homme here , on Cafleurebon, and also his claims it’s one of the best masculine fragrances on the market .
Sampled it , and bought it a few days after. Spectacular fragrance , must try for everyone.
If Sebastian is describing Sawlaj it in such a way, “Overdose of leather with carnations, ultra masculine fragrance, with lots of woodsy resinous touches” , I’m certain it smells amazing.
I would wear it on a date with a classy mid 30s and up lady.
    Exciting giveaway , USA

I always learn something from Michelyn, even in short intros. I’m not terribly familiar with carnation but I do enjoy clove so I’m excited to try this. Sebastian is my favorite fragrance youtuber, and I love watching his videos. It also helps that we have similar tastes in frags. This is one of the most beautiful fragrance bottles I have seen! I really like it! I am familiar with Kajal, and thanks to CFB, I decided to try Lamaar and it is beautiful. Writing from Colorado.

I loved that Michelyn mentioned Tabac Blond by Caron. I recency found an old bottle (with the tassled box) at a flea market. Oh, it’s a boss fragrance for sure. I actually get a petroleum note, which I love. I am intrigued by Sebastian’s description of Kajal Sawlaj. He described the carnation, leather, amber and vetiver notes very well. I am not going anywhere these days where I need to smell like a boss, but I still like to pretend. Fragrance is the best way to do that. I haven’t tried any perfumes form Kajal. Now I am off to listen to “The Boss” by Diana Ross.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’m my own Boss , so maybe I fit well into “Lady Boss” category 🙂
I like vetiver, patchouli, leather and resins so I think I can make a statement with Sawlaj
I know Joorie, because my sister in law owns it, but that’s the only Kajal scent I know. Spicy sweet rose ,with honey.
    Thanks for the giveaway
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • Thanks to Michelyn for her brief history of using carnation and leather together. I love the scent of carnation and am interested as to how it pairs with leather.I’m not familiar with Kajal Perfumes at all. Many thanks to Sebastian and Michelyn and many thanks to Kajal Perfumes for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Kajal is underrated house imo . I’ve smelled or sampled all , including that latest Lamar . I would gladly wear all , but one. Yasmina is too indolic for me, with strong jasmine note.
If i have to rate my favorite 3:
1.Kajal Homme , versatile fragrance, pleasing and elegant .
2.Dahab , mouthwatering juicy fragrance. Very different compared to Homme , way more playful.
3.Fiddah, changeling one depending on the weather. When it’s hot it’s sweeter Leather with jelly ranchers , but when it’s cold or raining I get also prominent mix of burning tobacco and ashtray.
Sawlaj is not a scary old-school fragrance like Knize Ten, it’s way more modern. The base is smooth resinous, vanilic and non rooty vetiver, leather is still present, but more in the background. Thankfully i barely detect jasmine.
    Thanks a lot , all @cafleurebon @theperfumeguy and @Kajalperfumes i already follow
USA only , for now at least

This is collab! Enlightning intro and amazing, datailed review by my favourite Sebastian. This bottle is just amazing, it’s like Aston Martin in fragrance bottles. Extremely industrial and harsh. Love it. As for the fragrance itself, notes in my opinion are well balanced. The leather is my favourite note, so I am extremely hyped. And the sentance Sabastian quoted, is something that encouraged me to buy it if I don’t win it. It is the perfect amtch fr me and a strong candidate to be #1 signature scent for a long, long time. I am sad I’ve never heard of Kajal Papis, but i will definetely keep up. Thank you Sebastian for amazing review, keep doin’ it, good job. Poland, EU

  • Sebastian’s review is always on point! Really enjoyed how he described the carnation notes. And I enjoyed reading about the history of combination of leather and carnation in perfumery history in Michelyn’s introduction I haven’t tried any Kajal perfumes yet.

  • carnation and overdose of leather. Sébastien did it again very detailed and informative. Im from EU
