Jeroboam Floro Review (Vanina Muracciole) 2021 + “Esperanto flower” Draw

Jeroboam Floro review

Strong essences are kept in small bottles” whispers the little black bottle, perfectly fitting in the palm of my hand. If you are a wine aficionado, the name Jeroboam must have stolen a smile from your face, the first time you encountered the elegant petite noir bottles on a perfumery shelf. In the wine world, champagne bottle sizes are named after biblical kings, “Jeroboam” being the correspondent of the great 3-liter bottle (with Methuselah, Balthazar, Nebuchadnezzar, Solomon, or Melchizedek standing for even larger containers). All the perfumes in Jeroboam’s portfolio are sold in extrait concentration and are all created by Vanina Muracciole around the theme of musk.

Musk is the red thread that unites and stands at the base (pun intended) of the great majority of our modern perfumery. It’s then so fitting that all the perfumes of the brand are given Esperanto names,  a fabricated language that was invented at the end of the 19th century with the intent of creating a universal medium of communication. Created by a Polish doctor named Zamenhof, (having “Doktoro Esperanto” as his pen-name) with the hope that it will bring world peace, Esperanto was an experiment that was created as a fresh start: a language stripped of all its political and historical baggage, easy to learn, easy to pronounce and with clear and hyper-simplified grammar. The movement grew over time, magazines were published in Esperanto, international congresses and conventions were held and it started to slowly but surely draw more and more attention to it. But with good, also came evil: Hitler denounced Esperanto as “a language created to unite the Jewish diaspora”, and Stalin said it was “the language of spies”. Esperanto survived in the 20th century mostly by word of mouth, most notably being embraced by the Bahai faith as a liturgical language, and had a recent revival when added as a new language course added to the famous Duolingo app. If we are to think of programming languages (Phyton, HTML, Javascript, etc) as universal, artificial constructed languages, then Esperanto is their less-famous, less abstract linguistic grandpa.

Of course, Floro needs no translation from Esperanto, its Latin root blooming in similar ways all across our familiar Babel: flour, flur, flor, floer, floyer, flower, fleur, fleure, florem, etc.

American Gods who played Easter

American Gods© TV series screenshots featuring Kristin Chenowetth as Easter aka Ostara, digital collage by Nicoleta

The famous Ostara “Easter” scene from Neil Gaiman’s tv series adaptation of American Gods started playing in my mind the first time I sprayed  Jeroboam Floro. A goddess unapologetically taking her offerings with her appetite raising, as the more she receives, the more she demands. A crescendo of petals, turning from a flurry to a full-blown pastel tornado, mixing in flowers, wet green stems and gathering them into a cloud of pollen-filled vegetal sweetness to be wrung, twisted, condensed, and sublimated into a potion ready to quench an old god’s craving. We are teased with red apple slices with honeyed undertones, tart green apples, all rolling alongside a stream of juicy ripe pineapple, filled with all the yellowed sweetness of a tropical sun. Still, the “cinematography” of the fragrance feels classical and elegant, there are no cut-scenes, no rapid transitions, no overly sweet or screechy edges, just long focused “camera” movements, seamlessly sliding from the juicy floral setting to a creamy and milky sandalwood realm.

The fragrance somehow seems constructed circularly, as if Vanina Muraciole wove a soft cocoon around you, placing layers of creamy sandalwood and textured cedar around the floral heart, without ever weighing the fragrance down. I had this image of a photoshop workspace, where the mouse rapidly switches from layer to layer and expertly adjusts all the levels, curves, and exposure of the flowers – so that they are showcased on the woody background, for that picture-perfect contrast. The white musk acts like a blur tool, smoothing, smudging, and blending the edges of a timeless image – that of a universal flower: perfected, enhanced, that floats just above your skin, like the most delicate yet sturdy shield.

PS: The drydown is the part that got me smitten, as I found it to be the olfactive translation of petting the soft and shiny fur of a kitten. Relaxing, soothing, round, almost tactile, whispered and cozy, this white musk is purring softly on your skin for hours: “Warm kitty, soft kitty, little ball of fur/ Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr! purr! purr!”

  • Such a beautiful and interesting review!!!!
“Universal” flower and red apple that are opened like soft cocoon- sounds very beautiful! Love Jeroboam stile- mostly interesting mask!
My favourite from Jeroboam is Vespero.

The notes sound lovely! I’ve not smelled anything from the house but would love to soon. Thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • A fragrance like petting a kitten? A warm cocoon of scent, yes please. Nicoleta makes Jeroboam Floro sound irresistible. I am in the US.

Vanina with creamy sandalwood and textured cedar around the floral heart sounds lovely.

  • Lovely review by Nicoleta’s.The notes, flowers wood musk. The idea of the dry down comparing it to a soft fur cat. Relaxing, smooth sounds wonderful. Thank you for this Chance.USA

  • Enjoyed reading this review of Jeroboam Floro by Nicoleta, especially the part where she describes the different layers using Photoshop layering analogy, and the Floro drydown as if petting a cute kitten. Lovely notes and a beautiful bottle. No experience with this brand, yet, but hope to experience it some day soon. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Amazing description. Juicy, floral, creamy, that sound superb. But what intrigue me the most, in this one is how you describe the musk. Talking about the musk, did I catch a reference from” The Big Ban Theory”? From EU

  • Floor sounds like such a soft, airy fragrance. I would love to give this one a try. And PS. That kitten is adorable! I am in Indiana.

  • Nice history about esperanto origin and floro have pineapple and cedarwood plus musk that got my interest alot. I am in Sweden EU

  • Great review. The postscript in particular sparked my interest, and not just because of the cute cat! I love white musk. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • My wishlist just got longer! I’m a fan of Jeroboam, one of my favs is Miksado. The description of Floro had me imagining a garden filled with flowers and delicious bowls of fruit. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • As a fellow cat lover, I must say I love Nicoleta’s kitten photo and the comparison to petting a kitten. I’ve smelled a few of the line (the names escape me), but I have yet to find the right one for me. Maybe this is it. USA. thanks for the chance.

  • This sounds really nice. I like how it sounds so cocooning and comforting yet also fresh, fruity, and floral. I also loved the imagery Nicoleta wrote about the drydown being similar to the sensation of petting a kitten. I want to experience that in a perfume! Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

Many thanks for this review, Nicoleta. The word Jeroboam conjures up in my mind a very specific scene in the original Brideshead Revisited series in the 1980s where there is a giant champagne bottle that is proving difficult to open. In the story, it’s a symbol of excess and ultimately, the downfall of a relationship. But here, Nicoleta describes Floro as being just right: demanding and alluring, yet homey and comforting. How is this possible? The florals, woods, and musk sound like an intoxicating combination I would love to have in my collection. I’m from the US.

  • Nicoleta, Ysera stole the show :). Dynamite comes in small packages and strong essences are kept in small bottles. Very powerful. I also get the same message in seeing Ysera’s photo…a little kitten that has a large supply of energy :). I believe Floro offers the same…a beautifully, powerful fragrance…all in a tiny bottle. USA

  • I like the comparison of Floro`s opening with the workspace of Photoshop. I was also very interested to learn about the phenomenon that inspired the authors to create the brand – Esperano, an extinct language. Sad and majestic at the same time. The notes sound very tempting – sweet and sour fruits and a musky-woody base that must last for several days.
Thank you for such a great overview, Nicoleta!

  • This Old God’s pagan legends have a mistical ritualistic aura , Ostara is all about rebirth, stamina,Jeroboam Floro seems to encapsulate it’s magic! Thanks for the review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • This does it for me: The drydown is the part that got me smitten, as I found it to be the olfactive translation of petting the soft and shiny fur of a kitten. Relaxing, soothing, round, almost tactile, whispered and cozy, this white musk is purring softly on your skin for hours: “Warm kitty, soft kitty, little ball of fur/ Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr! purr! purr!”

    Thank you!

  • All the notes sound right up my alley, but it was Nicola’s description of the drydown that sparked my interest the most. Who wouldn’t want to try a soft, soothing and cozy scent that almost feels like the softest kitty fur? I’m definitely sold 🙂 I’m in Slovakia, EU

  • Fantastic review, very knowledgeable and interesting. I had no idea about the wine bottle sizes!
This review makes me want to try this perfume because it sounds so cozy! Nothing’s better than a soft, purring cat. I am interested in trying this house in general, never smelled anything from them before.
    I live in the EU.

  • What an awesome review Nicoleta, Thank you!! It was interesting to read about Esperanto language.
Just recently I was watching youtube reviews on Jeroboam fragrances. I want to try soooo many!! And after reading this “Floro” as well.
“Floro” sounds so up my street, love the notes.

A beautiful description by Nicoleta I am really intrigued by the notes especially Sandalwood, Jasmine and Cedar notes. A house that I have got no experience with but really need to explore further. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Great review, as always! I love Jeroboam, own Origino, full bottle and this sounds just right up my alley – soft, cotonny, furry, lovely! And yeah, JASMINE! Ohhhh I love jasmine in my perfumes! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Nicoleta’s take on Floro rings a lot of bells and reminds me of Boha, a stunning floral fragrance. Perhaps Floro is actually Boha with a pine(apple) twist? Can’t wait to try it. VA, USA

  • Floro has some interesting notes and its’ name is close to my name, so I think it would fit me perfectly.
    Thank you! Europe

  • Kitten! I enjoy cozy, comforting fragrances for fall, but Nicoleta makes this one sound so much more interesting than even that, so smooth. I’d love to try it. Thanks for the draw! IN USA

  • Wow! I learned something new about different sized champagne bottles and that they have biblical kings names! I loved hearing that this is a fragrance that has layers to it. I have been exploring different types of musks this year and I’d like to try something that is “purring softly on the skin for hours.” 🙂

I haven’t tried any Jeroboam fragrances yet. I’m in the USA.

  • olleriksson says:

Comparing the dry down to petting a kitten is extremely intriguing to me! Haven’t seen that in a fragrance review before… I have never tried Jeroboam, so this might be a good place to start!

    I’m in Lisbon, Portugal, EU.

  • Nicoleta’s history lesson on the esperanto language was very interesting and informative. As far as the fragrance…the fruity opening is what I find most appealing. I’m in the USA.

  • I have not tested anything from Jeroboam, although I know they have some interesting fragrances with beautiful stories behind them. Floro is no exception. Thank you for the draw and for the review! I am based in Europe.

  • I am a sucker for florals, but the bit that got me most was the drydown part. I do love myself a good, comforting, warm musk and Nicoleta describes Floro as having exactly that. I think it’s a lovely result when the perfumer combines the freshness and narcotic side of flowers with the warmth and fluffiness of Musk.
    I live in the EU.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the nice review Nicoleta.

I enjoy cozy musks, especially the ones that smell like warm skin with iri/orris in it.

I love how the review mentions that this is a circular fragrance, with many wrapping layers to it with a heart of soft warm fur/musk.

Caught a spelling mistake in the programmnig languages – Python.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • patrick_348 says:

I liked Nicoleta’s comparisons of the scent to cinematography and photoshop. Her describing “layers of creamy sandalwood and textured cedar” around the floral heart got me interested. I live in the US in North Carolina, and greatly appreciate having the chance to win this.

  • Nicoleta! Love this review! So descriptive & informative! ❤️ Jeroboam is certainly an interesting house! While I have not had the chance to experience their extraits yet, I certainly look forward to the experience. Floro sounds wonderful for wearing with a soft cashmere sweater this fall. Sometimes one simply needs the cozy warmth of “a soft cocoon.” Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! USA

  • What’s not to like! The woodsy notes that end up in a smooth musk, sounds absolutely lovely! Overall love Jeroboam perfumes all worked around the Musk, totally underrated. Personal favourites are Gozo and Oriento (both exist in 100ml now too!). I live in Luxembourg, EU.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Lovely review by Nicoleta’s.The notes, flowers wood musk. The idea of the dry down comparing it to a soft fur cat. Relaxing, smooth sounds wonderful. Thank you for this Chance.USA

  • Very good review. Jeroboam Floro sounds wonderful from the base of the notes. I would very like to try it. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Thank you for the review Nicoleta! It was extremely interesting to learn about Esperanto. You’ve lured me down a rabbit hole where I’m finding myself starting to learn this international auxiliary language!

The part that sparked my interest is where you compare Floro to petting the soft and shiny fur of a kitten. As a proud owner of 2 furry felines I instantly know the smooth calming sensation of running your fingers through their warm furry coats.

I also loved reading about the White Musk blending the fragrance together. One of the notes me and my partner find most sensual is Musk. I love it when she wears Body Shop’s White Musk and she loves it when I wear Jovan’s Original Musk.
I am certain we will both enjoy Floro because of its prominent base note of Musk.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I’m very interested to try all of the releases from this house-I haven’t had an opportunity to try any of them yet. I’ve heard some good things about this fragrance house. I like cedar and sandalwood in fragrances and I’d like to see how they are in combination with the floral aspects of this fragrance. I’m also interested to see what the fruity aspects of this are like. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Really interesting review Nicoleta! I didn’t realize the Jeroboam names were taken from Esperanto. The concept of more, more, more as exemplified by Ostara is appealing when it’s a profusion if flowers and fruit. The musk as a softening note is appealing as a cozy end to the scent. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I have not tried any Jeroboam fragrances yet but I appreciate Nicoleta’s review of Jeroboam Floro. Would love to experience this fragrance.
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • Learning something everyday, a lot of times thanks to Cafleurebon!! From wine sizes to languages being denounced but thankfully bought back. Lovely review Nicoleta very well written & informative!!

As for the fragrance I’m really loving the notes apple, pineapple flower notes, wood & of course musk. All added but without weighing the fragrance down. All so fan of Jeroboam line & love the bottles!!

Thanks Cafleurebon love all that you do & good luck everyone!!!

  • Professor_Bair says:

I would love to smell this on my wife and sneak a spray now and then for myself. Sounds lovely. USA

  • wandering_nose says:

I really like how Nicoleta likens the admirable and applicable idea of Esperanto to one of a ‘universal flower’. There was a time in my perfumed life when I was desperately searching for the perfect floral, alwats appealing and seamlessly smooth. Floro might just be the treasure I had in mind in a subconscious level. I am based in the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • I am not familiar with this house, but they seem to have some nice offerings and knowing that the mind behind Jovoy is also the one in charge for the creation of Jeroboam, then I am sure that they are special.

    Thanks!

  • Kitten fur drydown!! Sign me up. I own Miksado and I’m glad the weather is finally cooling down enough for me to wear this one. I find the fragrances from this house last all day on my skin and really envelop the wearer in a warm cloud. I didn’t know the names were Esperanto or that they all revolve around musk. Thanks for the review & the draw. Love the kitty pic! I’m in the US.

  • “If you are a wine aficionado”
    I’m here 😉

Francois Henin is doing everything right, from A to B. Jovoy is now the best boutique worldwide, Jovoy fragrances are awesome, and Jeroboam project is different , but also successful. Insulo stands out to me, and my taste.
Floro i think would to be well blended fruity musky scent , with nice amount of woods , and certain levels of coziness.
Lovely opportunity, thanks to Nicoleta, Francois Henin, and Cafleurebon
    Cheers with Pinot Noir

    Wow wow wow!

Wait a way to describe this fragrance!!

    Being “teased with red apple”
Sounds like a delicious torture I’d love to experience.

And being wrapped in a soft cocoon of creamy sandalwood and cedar sounds like something both men and women could lose themselves in.

Would love to try this out.

  • Nicoleta that’s quite a story you wove 🙂 I never imagined a fragrance would bring to mind petting a kitten and that has put a smile on my face. Jeroboam Floro sounds expertly blended and I’d love to try it out. I’m in USA

  • Thank you, Nicoleta for this beautiful and informative review! It was very interesting information about Esperanto!!
Love floral perfumes and with apple notes and Jeroboam’s mask – will be wonderful.

  • I’m familiar with all Jeroboam fragrance, excluding Floro. If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Insulo
    2. Oriento
    3. Ambra / Miksado
Floro is fruity, woody and musky , such fragrances I like to wear is rainy, and windy weather . Nice timing for such release .
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot
    USA only , for now

  • Here in the USA American Gods is on the channel Starz and I remember that episode with all the bunnies. But Nicoleta’s cat is what o remember now with Floro
The song at the end was so cute

  • Bright and happy is how I feel today, it’s been a while …
Why don’t I pair such days with sexy fruity , and woody musk fragrance like Floro?
I’m not familiar with Jeroboam, but I know Jovoy , I own Private Label.
    Thanks to Jovoy, Nicoleta Tomsa

  • Nicoleta take on Floro reminded me of making Apple and Pineapple crumble , and later eating it , while having bouquet of flowers right next to me. The whole mixture is how I imagine Floro would smell.
I am familiar with Jeroboam , and to me Insulo is the best one. Top quality vanilla fragrance , and as a Pastry Chef I know vanilla.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.
    USA

  • La Liturgie des Heures , Psychedelique , Les Jeux sont Faits Jovoy and Private Label are the Jovoy fragrances i know . Les Jeux sont Faits i found to be the best smelling one of the four , $180 is what i paid for 100ml bottle from Luckyscent.
Jeroboam sibling i have no experience with , other than seeing a few videos on Youtube , and the reviews on Cafleurebon.
Floro i think is sexy and seductive , grown up fragrance, in a special bottle.
I like the name “Floro” , Esperanto is artificially created language in 19th century, all i can remember about it from my high school days . It was interesting learning more about the language.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • If you’re a fragrance enthusiast you know Jovoy , but Jeroboam I think not many people know about.
Floro is intriguing to me , because it’s
sexy and playful , but not going into carnal territory.
In my mind I now relate the fragrance to the big hit from the 90s by Right Said Fred “I’m Too Sexy”
    Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • The parent company I know, Psychedelique is beyond gorgeous, one of the best patchouli scents ever made , but Jeroboam is new to me. Musky fragrance with lots of fruits and some woods I would like to experience. I would wear Floro on all occasions , its versatile and quite attractive.
    Thank you all

Thank you Nicoleta for this lovely review, I always enjoy the reviews that include history and make me learn something new. From Nicoleta’s impressions and reading the notes, Floro looks like an impressive scent, very well constructed and complex, one of those scents you keep on sniffing from your wrist when you wear them. It happens also with Gozo, of which I gave a sample, amazing brand with unusual and great fragrances! Greetings from Italy

Fascinating review Nicoleta! What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review is how she described the fragrance as seemingly constructed circularly, with layers of sandalwood, cedar, and musk, and the musk acting as a blur tool, smoothing and blending the edges of the floral heart. That sounds so lovely and comforting that I can’t wait to try it. I live in the US.
