Initio Parfums Side Effect Review + Carnal Coziness Draw

Initio Parfums Side Effect review

Video Contributor Steven Gavrielatos has reviewed many Initio Parfums over the years and when we were recently chatting about the brand, he realized that although he included Initio Parfums Side Effect in many of his top ten lists (check out his top 10 favorite holiday perfumes here) he had never done a standalone video. Initio Parfums Side Effect is a boozy, sweetly spicy resinous perfume offset by tobacco and that ticks all the boxes for the perfect winter fragrance. What caught my attention was the use of Hedione in the note list.

hedione

Hedione “The Pheronome” Molecule

Hedione was originally used by fragrance company Firminich© in the early 1960s as an alternative to jasmine absolute and was first used in perfumery by the great Edmond Roudnitska in 1966 when he created  Dior’s Eau Sauvage. In 2015 the science journal NeuroImage published a study in which Hedione was found to stimulate the limbic areas of the brain in women which are responsible for the release of pheromones. In other words, the scent of Hedione might drive women crazy (perhaps that is the “side effect” and why Intitio Side Effect is part of the Carnal collection). –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

Main Notes: Cinnamon Bark, Rum, Tobacco, Saffron, Sandalwood, Hedione

  • Kareem O. Davis says:

I must purchase this juice.. Steven’s reviews are always spot on.. If he says it’s good juice; it’s good juice. I subscribed to redolessence; I want to say like a year ago. And have been getting put on great fragrances ever since. And Michelyn’s Introduction; makes me want to purchase this TWICE.. Thanks Steven Thanks Michelyn

I have a have a few Initio fragrances and love them. I received a sample of Side Effect and it is on my wish list. I have to pace myself on fragrance purchases of this quality but would proudly wear Side Effect! The unique smell and performance of Initio fragrances have set my expectations high for future purchases. I am an Initio ambassador!

  • Victor Rivas says:

Side effect is one of my all time favorites; the boozyness given by that rum combined with the sweet vanilla is perfect for fall and winter. I heard people compared it to replica jazz club, and although I can see it, Side Effect is on a different class. I have a 5 ml decant, and just a few sprays will last for at least 8hrs on skin, and all day on clothes. I would definitely love to win a bottle of Side Effect, thanks!

  • Terence White says:

I just smelled this in a fragrance store this week! I had it on my hand and kept smelling my hand all day and my wife loved it as well! Definitely one of the best fragrances I’ve ever smelled as someone who is new to starting a fragrance collection.

  • Damien Novello says:

I just received good news that I was praying for about a new job and I start in the beginning of February. I figured a new year a new job and possibly and new scent ! Thanks for the
    opportunity. Have a good day.

Im a huge fan of Mr. Redolessence.. I’ve found myself purchasing many of the recommended fragrances. I’ve always been intrigued by the brand Initio, but currently do not own any of the fragrances, however, I’m even more interested in the particular side effect fragrance now that I’ve learned of the note of Hedione….very interesting indeed. 😉

  • Kenneth Torres says:

I’ve tried Oud for Greatness and and not my cup of tea yet I do appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry. I also tried Blessed Baraka and loved it and heard great things about Side Effect. Just searching for that one perfume to ravage my senses. Perhaps Side Effect will have that effect?

  • Emily Sowek says:

I just recently got my nose on musk therapy and psychedelic love. I found must therapy the more interesting of the two and will give them both a few wears (I got decants) before I judge. My initial take is that MT is the more interesting of the two. I debated checking this one out too, but I find rum goes either way in a fragrance. SeeingStevens enthusiasm and reading this write up however my interest has peaked and I will try to check this one out for sure.

  • I have never heard of Hedione. I found the article very informative by Michelyn and Steven’s video as spit on describing what to expect from this fragrance. I’m very interested in it now!

  • This fragrance acts like a minor secret weapon of sorts. It either actually makes an impression on other people that promotes benefits interactions or it gives you the impression that it does, a placebo effect. Definitely in my top 10

  • I never blind bought parfume, but when I hear all of this from Steven I want to buy it. Now I can see that I can win it so

  • Andrew DiPaola says:

    Hey Steven, love the channel.

I have a MaxAroma decent of Side Effect and I’m obsessed, but full bottle is too pricey for me. Would love a full bottle of this magical juice as my girlfriend really enjoys it herself too. Appreciate the chance!

  • I was aware of hedione fact mentioned by Michelyn that it was first used on Eau Sauvage and it is what that gives eau sauvage a jasmine vibe. Steven says that Initio has lot of fragrances that he enjoys but Side Effect may be his favorite. It has an impressive vanilla-coumarin combination that may smell like tonka bean. It also uses rum in a way that he has not seen anywhere else and Side Effect also is unique. Steven recommends it for all seasons except summer. I am in US.

  • Michelyn & Steven!!!❤️❤️❤️ This review is fascinating! Yes! Edmond Roudnitska is truly one of the greatest artists in the history of perfume! I am wearing vintage Diorissimo right now! ❤️
How fascinating is the human brain?!? Chemistry (in both senses), too! Michelyn, what a perfect introduction! ❤️
Steven, what an Amazing review!!! ❤️ Thank you for great thoughts on sillage/projection, note breakdown (I really enjoyed your explanation of how leather accords can be created), the scientific explanation of Hedione, and so much more! I am now so curious & excited to try Side Effect (and so is my husband)! He is SO rooting for us to win this one! ❤️ Thank you for a fantastic give away!!! Good luck to everyone!!! USA

Steven is definitely one of the best!
He knows the perfumers behind the fragrance and the history. He also knows how to pronounce everything correctly, which isn’t always easy. He also does comparisons to other frags to give us an idea of similarities. Love the content and I find it excellently well done as always.

  • Brad Lee Jackson says:

Steven truly captures the essence of this scent with his review which makes me eager to try it. I love the various nuances of Oud For Greatness, so seeing how the note of Hedione, as described by Michelyn Camen, is used is truly peeking my Scent interest.

  • Good to learn from the introduction that hedione, “…was found to stimulate the limbic areas of the brain in women which are responsible for the release of pheromones…”. You can hear in the video the reviewer really likes this one. US

  • Teracotta Kim says:

The info on Hedione wow – Michelyn thank you for the breakdown and details. Is there a sister scent that drives men crazy or might this have any effect on their brain? Steven, your detailed review is much appreciated as always. I would love to know your favorite Initio scents from all 6 lines. I am also following your IG: @raretemple_

  • Louis Thompson says:

I did not know the relationship between this and Eau Sauvage. Gotta be excellent quality perfume

  • It’s amazing how the world of fragrance is captured by true enthusiasts who are willing to share this information to the world of fragrance lovers around the world. I never knew about hedione and now that I know I can explain this story with others that don’t know. Michelyn thank you for the detailed article, and also thanks to Steven for reviewing this fragrance Side Effect that he has grown to love. I really want to put my nose on this fragrance.

  • I very much appreciate Michelyn’s introduction on Hedione as I’m wearing my poor bottle of Eau Savauge out way too quickly. Now I know why!

It would also be wonderful to own a bottle of Side Effect. My first attempt to buy an Initio resulted in a perfectly fake bottle of Oud for Greatness. It’s my son’s prized possession (after his Starwalker).

To that end, my Insta is anti0grav.

Thank you again for your amazing content!

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Michelyn’s fact (and Steven’s deep-dive) about hedione is something I had never heard before. I wonder if this would have any effect on my wife, hahaha? The note profile sounds excellent and I prefer cold weather fragrances in general. Steven’s breakdown makes me wish I had that virtual scent technology. I’d really love to win this one. Appreciate the giveaway opportunity! Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • Øyvind Voldmo Larsen says:

Just found out about Initio, and after seeing the videos im morphing more and more into this other world of colognes. Love the name High Frequenzies and Side Effect as i run a recording studio

Keep up the great work guys!!!

  • Courtney Palmer says:

Great review and introduction. Steven with an awesome breakdown as always. I really want to get my nose on this. Definetly the most intriguing one from from house. Love boozy and caramel notes!

  • Wonderful perfume, a master piece in my humble opinion, true unisex and such a warm cozy scent for fall and winter, this is at the top of my Wish list. Thank you Stephen for a great review. And thank you, Initio Parfums for an outstanding creation and the magic of discovering your fragrances. ~ Inna.

  • This was a fascinating read! Although I have a general understanding of several notes, a lot of the chemicals that work under the surface are lost on me.

  • I always heard great things about Side effect and always wanted to buy it and have yet to smell it. Michelyn’s introduction was perfect I never knew what Hedione was but heard the term many times and I am thankful for Stevens review because they way he describes Side effect makes u feel like u smelling it in that moment. Thanks again and my IG is @wesphilly_34

  • Wonderful review by Steven as always. Michelyn’s introduction was interesting to learn about the note Hedione was found to stimulate the limbic areas of the brain in women which are responsible for the release of pheromones. In other words, the scent of Hedione might drive women crazy. Wow that must be the side effect. The notes are beautiful boozy, Vanilla. SIDE EFFECT is definitely on my wishlist. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Samantha Bouquin says:

This is probably the Initio fragrance I’ve been most interested in trying. It sounds like it smells very warm and cozy. Thanks for the info on hedione. Hmmmmmmm… very interesting in how they named the fragrance.

Steven, thanks for the lesson on how certain notes are achieved in perfumes (e.g. leather). The art of perfume making is very complex, and I appreciate some insight into the chemistry.

Appreciate having an opportunity to enter this giveaway.

  • I had never heard of hedione but after reading Michelin’s introduction, the note is interesting. I think the science behind it that both Michelin and Steven mentioned during his review is very interesting. I have been looking for a good cold weather fragrance for a while now and longevity is a big selling point for me so I really need to check out Side Effect. Thank you both for the information and the review!

  • Calvin Wilcox says:

Great review ,good Description of the fragrance profile appreciate your recommendations, I actually , really Interested in getting to know this fragrance house.

  • Loved the chemistry visual of the hedione molecule! Steven always crushes the reviews from a unique and educational perspective. Just threw y’all a follow on Instagram as well from @mitchell_lewis_

  • I really appreciate the information that both Steven and Michelyn have provided in their reviews. I was not personally familiar with Hedione but the science behind it is fascinating. I have been looking for a good cold weather fragrance and longevity is a big selling point for me so I need to check Side Effect out. Thanks for all of this information.

  • Hello, thanks for the review Steven and opportunity to try this amazing sounding fragrance! I would love to try this one day!
    Thanks
    Chris

  • I own a couple of fragrances from Initio and this one is next on my list! I am a woman and am just really getting into deeper spicy boozy fragrances this year. I love watching Steve, but he is not good for my bank account…no complaints tho 🙂

  • The history of Hedione is super interesting! I had no idea it goes all the way back to 1960. As for Side Effect, I have REALLY wanted to try this fragrance but avoided it out of fear of falling in love and having to pay for a full bottle 🙂 I am really drawn to boozy, tobacco fragrances. No Instagram account so this will have to be my only entry. ~Indiana, USA

  • Alex Miller says:

Side Effect is on my radar since a couple of years ago when CJ City started to put it on top of almost every list he was making. Now that also Steven is talking so gracefully about it, it only makes me crave even more for that beautiful purple bottle.
P.s. i hope CJ City is ok,he didnt post any videos in a while

  • Ismael Awadalla says:

I’ve never gotten to smell Initio Side Effect but it sounds very intersting! Crazy to learn about the Hedione scent and how it was used in Dior’s Eau Sauvage which in my mind Side Effect and Sauvage wouldn’t smell the same but now my interest is piqued. Great review!

  • Randy Barfuss says:

I knew Hedione was supposed to be an aphrodisiac, but I didn’t realize is was specific to stimulating the female brain.

  • I would love to win this bottle sooo much!! I have sampled it before, but at the moment cannot purchase it because I am pursuing a PhD and don’t have a lot of disposable income. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic fragrance.

  • Thanks for the history of Hedione. I didn’t know that it was used as a alternative to jasmine. I like all of the notes that Steven mentioned, especially the cinnamon and rum. Mich USA
    @mary_luvs_flwrs

  • So the side effect of “ Hedione” is the release of pheromones in women that draw them in , wow, mind blown. I’ve heard so many great things about Side Effect and have always wanted to try it but the opportunity hasn’t presented itself. I’m glad Stephen finally did a review, makes me even more excited. My IG name is poppo_denarco3

  • “Might drive women crazy” LOL Love it. Definitely heavily used in perfumery since the 60s to fill out a lot of floral accords. Quite possibly the pre-ambroxan ambroxan. Haven’t experienced any particular pheromonal effects with it myself, but I’m a dude so perhaps we’re immune. lol Certainly an alluring review from Steven! I think he described the scent beautifully. The spicy aspect is probably my favourite part, but it’s a sweet one without a doubt. Is it my fav from Initio though?…..Not sure. The verdict is still out. Let’s say top 3! USA Insta: @donilight

  • Samuel Liebman says:

Excellent review and one of my favorite pickups of 2021. The boozy opening may be one of the best ever.

  • This is Such a unique and AMAZING FRAGRANCE! Steven’s review of this fragrance is spot on! Was lucky enough to try a full wearing of this from a friends bottle and my life changed ever since.Near Mystical experience when I wore it. Now saving my Pennies for a full bottle! I’ve only sampled “Psychedelic Love” alongside this one which is different, but equally good! I wouldn’t doubt “Side Effect” being the best Initio scent though. Keep up the great work Redolessence. I very much enjoy your reviews. Super Entertaining and educational about fragrances Congrats to anyone that wins. . Good luck all!

  • Rob Courtier says:

Brought a sample of side effect last year in New Zealand, fell in love at first sniff. It has always been on my radar to buy. As I only have designer fragrances at the moment, this was always going to my first niche fragrance.

  • The ultimate winter date fragrance!
OMG—just one spray and your date will propose to you! I’ve had the occasion to get a sample and I love it. Who knew that Hedione does double duty by activating the limbic center of the brain while extending its longevity. And Steven was the right person to present this intoxicating scent.

  • Also to add to my first comment, I wore CK one Voraciously when it first came out. Super interesting to know that hedione is one of the main ingredients that caused the “clean” “fresh” effect… Very informative and interesting article by Michelyn. Made me want to Revisit CK ONE.

  • dpjfilmmaker says:

This is one fragrance I have absolutely wanting a bottle of. I have sniffed it before and love the boozy warmth of it. I can see why there is so much hype on this because it screams connection, especially in the cooler temps when this fragrance seems to shine the most. Been a fan of Steven’s reviews for a long time and appreciate all the guidance and knowledge gained! Thanks!

  • Loved the intro and review! Thanks for all the hard work this sounds like an amazing fragrance!!

  • Richard Reyna says:

I’m not the type of man to attract women with my physical features, but I’m hoping I will at least smell good.

  • Nice review by Stephen. I think this perfume will be a very good option for winter time and I would like to try this out soon.

  • Enjoyed Steven’s review ans do remember him including this fragrance many times in lists as well. I very tried this and it was great in winter. Like Steven mentioned I like the boozy vanillic sweetness and tobacco from Side Effect. Also enjoyed learning a bit about Hedione from both Steven and Michelyn. I knew it was in this fragrance but didn’t realize how much. Also I enjoyed learning a bit about the history of this molecule from Michelyn’s introduction. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA. Following on insta from @goldenish19

  • Love the Scent and the introduction and review, I am a numbers guy and enjoy knowing the science about the fragrances and not just the emotion. Nyrep1@instagram

  • I really enjoyed Stevens take on side effect, describing it and how it’s a great cooler weather frag. I liked Michelyn’s explanation on the hedione note in side effect.
    @nigeluno21

  • Wow… Initio Parfums Side Effect sound like a great fragrance to experience. Steven gives insightful details on the background of the fragrance. CaFleureBon’s article on the fragrance containing hedione and its appeal makes Side Effect a must have…

  • Widmaier Cineas says:

Michelyn’s introduction on Hedione , was very knowledgeable and it amazes me how it was first used in Dior Eau Sauvage , which is a very complete opposite fragrance compare to Initio Side Effect. Steve’s review was spot on as always, he never disappointed me, he took his time to go through every single details about the fragrance , and I also call Steve the online Fragrance professor , because He’s the best at reviewing fragrances .Thank you guys .

  • Sandro Mateush says:

I’ve heard so much about this brand and about this fragrance, so it would be extremely interesting to get to know him closer. Especially since he’s in my favorite direction.
Thanks to Stephen and thanks to Michelyn for the detailed and interesting review, it can’t be better. The fragrance is very intriguing.

I only have a sample of Oud for Greatness which I love and plan on purchasing later on along with Rehab I would like to get a bottle of Side Effects

  • Larry Wilson says:

Very entertaining and informative article as well as Steven’s video. Thank you both. Looking forward to a bottle of Initio Side Effect!

  • I love this review by Stephen. I was thinking that he would need to do a standalone for a while because I did keep seeing him talk about this fragrance. I got to smell a sample once and I fell in love. I also liked learning about this molecule, maybe that’s why I like the scent so much being a woman haha. I do follow you on insta @rhifings and I would love to be entered in the contest. Thank you!

  • To be honest i never heard about this molecule “hedione” once you guys explain what it is you got my attention, i own oud for greatness and i love it….but now i cant wait to put my nose on this sounds like you said the perfect cold weather fragance and living in Philadelphia will definitely work for me…please i would love to be entered in the giveaway, my insta name is andres.f.ortega.96 I’m following you already.
In ref to Steve review what can i say he is awesome with his reviews pretty everything he said he loves i try at least in decant.

  • I’m actually very glad that Michelyn explained what Hedione actually is; I have seen it listed within perfumery and had NO idea where it was derived. Perhaps this explains why it is seemingly becoming more popular; who doesn’t want to have something that illicits the “Side Effect” of driving women crazy. Steven was the first reviewer that I had watched early on in my fragrance journey who raved about Initio’s Side Effect. It’s always refreshing to see it continue to pop up in his lists time and again; Side Effect is undoubtedly a legendary fragrance it its own right. Beautiful bottle, reputable company, and a note breakdown (I’m a sucker for anything with cinnamon) that makes this reader’s mouth water is the perfect formula. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing Side Effect (yet), but it’s certainly on my radar. Thanks as always for the opportunity, guys, and Cheers from Illinois!

  • I am not sure if I buy into the hedione effect, not looking to stimulate any woman’s limbic system, but I would love to try this perfume. I love Oud for Greatness by this house. Always enjoy this gentleman’s YouTube reviews!

  • touchofgenius says:

I have sampled roughly 10 scents from this line. Oud for greatness is my favorite so far right after that is the side effect. Intoxicating long lasting huge projection some of my favorite notes all in one! I love side effect.

  • I have tried some initio Perfumes but never side effect. I do review on instagram @jelitefragrance for english and Spanish speaker and I would love to have the opportunity to show my followers how good is this fragrance. I have heard so many good things about this fragrance. I live in New York and this fragrance will perfect for this weather with those vanilla, rum and tabacco accords.

  • I’ve tried Initio Oud for Greatness and like it, even though it is quite strong and not my favorite oud fragrance. Michelyn’s note about history of hedione in Side Effect and its scientifically verified pheromonic properties was interesting – perhaps making Side Effect a good Valentine’s Day gift, as it is around the corner. Steven’s videos are always insightful. I am a Redolessence subscriber. Interesting that Side Effect has only a few listed notes (Main Notes: Cinnamon Bark, Rum, Tobacco, Saffron, Sandalwood, Hedione) and sandalwood and tobacco are some of my favorite notes. Thanks Steven and Michelyn for your review and historical note. Appreciate the draw. I am from the USA.

  • The Hedione Review made me want to tatoo it on my neck and as a target to spray the most sinfully addictive pheremone. Steven’s review is shocking in that it was his first time reviewing Side Effect. Steven always confirms and influences my decisions to purchase blind buy or decant.

  • Thank you, Michelyn and Steve for an interesting review for Side Effect, a perfume from a house that I am just becoming aware of. Of course, as a woman, the inclusion of Hedione tweaked my interest in trying this and revisiting other fragrances which include this fantastic ingredient: Dior Sauvage and one of my newest discoveries, Kilian ‘Princess’. I really love listening to Mr. Gavrielatos reviews…he is so thorough in his reviews and so pleasant to listen to…his manner of speaking instills confidence in his opinions and as I am a language ‘nerd’, enjoy his word choice. Thank you for the opportunity to win this bottle and Cafleurbon’s bright addition to my mornings! I am in the US.

  • Monika Middleton says:

Steven, you have reminded me of an awesome fragrance that has been on my wishlist along with Oud For Greatness and Rehab. I had to get my sample out to rediscover this beauty. Fingers crossed on this giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity to enter and learn more about hedione.

  • Thank you Michelyn for the introduction and Steve for the detailed breakdown. I was unaware Hedione had that effect but can see how it would be extremely alluring as also Steve mentions in his video. I’ve had the good grace to smell Side Effect and get mesmerized by it. I’m not sure how some people find a parallel with Jazz Club which had to grow on me as opposed to Side Effect which was an immediate hit. The fact that it also has saffron, vanilla, sandalwood and tobacco checks all the boxes for me. Thank you for the giveaway. I’m in USA.

  • Steven aka Redolessence always have a way with words that knows how to describe fragrances. It got me intrigued that he says its his favorite fragrance of the brand. I also liked how Michelyn described the side effect that the note Hedione provokes.

  • Peter Miller says:

Of all the Initio I have tried, this is my favorite. It’s better than OFG and Rehab. The sweetness is to die for. The boozy nuances set off the sweetness perfectly. One of my favorite cool-weather scents and the compliments it gets don’t lie about how good Side Effect is.

  • I find it funny that there is the literal application of a side effect being used through Hedione in this fragrance in particular aiming to capture the attention of people around us. I never knew Hedione was an aphrodisiac and know little about it as a note. Michelyn, thank you for the information. Steven, as always, great job reviewing this one. I have been wanting to get my nose on this for a while. I have smelled Rehab but that is all from Initio and would be honored to receive a bottle of this marvelous juice.

  • This is my introduction to Hedione as a note. i feel like Michelyn described this note thoroughly and it seems very interesting. The way Steven describes this fragrance seems extremely great for wintertime, my location has winters of -30 so a winter fragrance such as this would be awesome.

  • Blind bought a sample cause of the hype and upon first spraying, i hated it. But then i wore it to work , which was a rather bold move, and it got some interesting reactions from my female colleagues. Yea this stuff is as close as you’re gona get to the mythical ‘panty dropper’ scent profile. A bad boy scent, sex in the bottle. More on the sweet side, but i strongly believe that if you’re gona have only one sweet fragrance, this should be it.
Weirdly with this one, i still dont love the scent per say, but i love that it makes me feel like an incubus.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I thought Michelyn’s intro on Hedione was very informative and enlightening. As for Steven’s review, his breakdown of, and enthusiasm for Side Effect, adds to its luster and desirability.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

    IG:@BRYGANTOR_1

  • Michelyn is always bringing the history, I had no idea about hedione in the classic Eau Sauvage. And Steven is always eloquent with his usage of words to make a fragrance sound enticing. I would love to win this since I don’t own any from Initio.

  • Michele Davis says:

Michele here, by way of Los Angeles, CA! When I first heard about Side Effect, I cant say it intrigued me enough until I made an IG fragrance account (@whoamichythatsfire) and then I kept seeing it EVERYWHERE! People that Ive befriended and follow for their insight have all different tastes, including Steven, but they all had THIS. I got a sample and I was blown away, never smelled rum smell so authentic like this before, its INTOXICATING! Wow! So yeah, this would absolutely insane to win this!

  • First of all, I was happy to hear someone pronounce ÇaFleureBon out loud. Speaking to Michelyn’s introduction and Steven’s video, I enjoyed the description of how Hedione impacts a fragrance, and the attributes it’s used to contribute. It also makes me want to try this one; jasmine gets a lot of play around here and I enjoy resolute, boozy fragrances.

    Thanks for profiling this one!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Interesting intro about hedione! I may now understand why I love jasmine scents so much lol! I have been wanting to try this fragrance as I love boozy scents. Steven’s review and the fact that it’s the first fragrance of the line he fell in love with says a lot. And I’m all about spicy boozy this time of year. Thanks for the review and draw. In the US.

  • OMG OMG Side effect is the real side effect of loving fragrances. lovely Addiction to one of the icons from Initio Parfums. I heard a lot about this icon but when I read Michelyn’s introduction on Hedione note and watched Steven’s video I discovered that I know little about this gorgeous perfume especially the fact that Hedione stimulates the limbic areas of the brain in women which are responsible for the release of pheromones. Cheers from Fl

  • I can not say for sure, but I might have been introduced to Initio by Steven. He has always given such great and useful reviews. I learn so much from him and his extensive knowledge. Unfortunately I still have not gotten an Initio scent, mostly because of all of the other perfumes Steven has introduced me to, and my more modest budget. Thanks for a chance to win. In maryland.

  • Garth Wright says:

Very nice fragrance. I had a small decant but it wasn’t enough to make an accurate assessment of it. I’ve seen nothing but great things about this fragrance from people though.

  • Cris Morales says:

I got to sample side effect and hopefully I get lucky enough to own a bottle. Your awesome and so is your channel side effect was such an amazing amazing fragrance definitely a head turner with such beautiful dry down. By far top 5 best fragrance ever!

  • I was first introduced to heroine through Annick Goutal’s Petite Cherie. I’m not sure if any pheromones were released but it does have a lovely floral quality. Jasmine? Sure why not. This in combination with an alcoholic spicy tobacco sounds like a comforting scent for winter. IG @blinkydog1999. MD, USA.

  • Side Effect is one of my top 3 fragrances….scent, sillage and longevity…checks all the boxes! Interesting to find out the possible origins of the name, in conjunction to hedione ( thanks Michelyn!) Crazy that Steven never actually reviewed it!

    Following @ sobermindedmusic

  • Side Effect sounds like an awesome fragrance. Thanks to Steven’s detailed description of notes and Michelyn’s succinct introduction, including the history of Hedione, I can image the sweet but spicy boozy vanilla. Will be fun to check out that pheromone effect as well. Thanks for a lovely giveaway. USA

  • Richard Reyna says:

I thought I had a basic understanding of Hedione, but Michelyn just hit me with some knowledge! I just assumed Hedione was a newer chemical structure that perfumers just started using as a marketing gimmick. Excellent history lesson, Michelyn.
The reason Steven’s reviews are great is because of his enthusiasm and knowledge. He’s so passionate about fragrances and it comes through in each of his videos. A major part of the fragrance community!

  • Interesting learning about the Hedione molecule. Honestly I thought the pheromones in perfume thing was kind of a myth, so I’m glad to learn there’s some research behind it. Love the Side Effect bottle, it’s sleek yet opulent. I am in USA

Wow! So thats why it is called Side Effect! The hedione effect!
So good to read and learn things here, thanks to Michelyn, for always including knowledge behind a specific perfume.
I always see Side Effect on Steven’s video and top picks, and its so good to finally see a standalone review. Great in depth review Steven! I agree that this is a sexy beast.
I would love to own a full bottle of this gem!
Thanks to Fine Fragrances for this!
    Cheers from USA <3

  • Michelyn’s intro was definitely spot on. Though I have not gotten a full bottle from the fragrance house I have had a few samples and Side Effect was by far my favorite. After getting home and smelling it I was disappointed that I did not ask for a few more since I knew that I would run through the one that I had gotten. I’m glad Michelyn explained why it might have been named Side Effect because whenever I wear it I receive so many compliments and questions about what I’m wearing. I was surprised to see that Steven had never reviewed it before but like he said the fragrance is very unique and lasts forever. The time he said is spot on as it usually lasts about 7-8 hours on my skin. Hopefully I can win this bottle so I can stop using my sample so sparingly. I’m looking forward to investing in Initio Parfums as I have a few on my To Buy list

  • Great introduction and review! I love side effects, I had one sample of it and i loved it so much i couldn’t make the sample last longer as much as i wanted it. I would love to own my own bottle one day. My Instagram is Tomsfragrances

  • Ubaid Athar says:

Since got a sniff of it, this has been my dream fragrance but unfortunately it’s not affordable for me so yeah i think this is the best fragrance in the market. Love Every Single Note in it ❤❤❤ highly recommended for people who love sweet and dry resinous gummy fragrances. It pure addiction!

  • The blend with the rum is perfectly balanced with that of tobacco, saffron and sandal. This makes for a really interesting blend that everyone should get their nose on at least once.

  • Steven does an excellent job with his reviews, always, he’s the reason I know about this line! Hedione is one of those notes that sticks to you and makes others want to stick to you as well…ha! I have sampled Side Effect because of Steven, but haven’t pulled the trigger and spoiled myself…single mom of two. It is on my short list, and I hope to win this giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • This is an awesome fragrance that I would love to add to my collection! The reaction and compliments I receive are crazy! This is a must have fragrance! Another great review! I trust your nose and knowledge of fragrance! Thanks Steven!

  • I didn’t know that information about the ingredient Hedione. I happen to really enjoy jasmine, which explains why I love Side Effect. I have a small sample of Side Effect and really love it and always get compliments when I wear it. I learned about this fragrance a few years ago from Steven (and Carlos) and that’s how I obtained the decant. I would love to finally own a full bottle. It’s a phenomenal fragrance!
    I live in the US.

  • Initio Side Effect is one of my favorite decants that I’ve ever purchased. I haven’t had the chance to explore a full bottle yet but let me tell you about my 5ml wearing experience.

Side effect opens smooth and warm just like Steven mentions. I love the playful winter notes with the subtle boozy accord on my skin.

This baby is an attention magnet with the ladies! I get those lingering conversations with the not so subtle “ooo what’s that smell” paired with the lean into my chest/neck region. That’s my favorite form of compliment but this fragrance has landed a few “you smell really good” and “I like this one you have on”

After reading Michelyn’s brief explanation of Hedione it totally makes sense. If the limbic part of the brain is being stimulated, it totally accounts for some of the forward compliments I’ve received! I had no idea Hedione was being used by Dior since before 1970

This Fragrance is a perfect balance in my opinion, it’s my favorite Initio fragrance to date. Hope to own a bottle some day!

  • Good afternoon,

This fragrance sounds smooth. Thanks again Steven and cafleurebon. I’d love to try this one as my dad always mentions it, when possible id like to smell that boozy run and cinnamon accord. (I forgot to mention my instagram in my prior post.)

  • I must say I was surprised to learn that Steven hadn’t reviewed Side effect even though he had mentioned it and many others from the brand but very glad that did now. Awesome review as always. Agree with Steven that Sweetness is pleasantly noticeable from the start (to die for and a perfect cold weather scent), gorgeous scent with rum, vanilla, cinnamon and Hedione! Love learning more about the molecule. Based in the US

  • I really enjoyed the educational nature of Michelyn’s introduction and Steven’s review. I love to learn about fragrances just as much as I enjoy the reviews.
I was interested in Hedione because of the science studies and that is what actually inspired me to get a sample of Side Effect.
I fell in love with it at first sniff and I could not stop smelling it on my skin for the rest of the day.
Thank you to Steven for such in depth reviews (which include showing the packaging and sprayer). And you always describe the fragrances so well. I agreed with everything you said!
I need this fragrance in my collection.

  • Love how Steven detailed introduce perfume !!
I remember I liked this perfume, but after this review need to go shop and test again!

  • As always, Steven’s videos resonate with fragrance lovers, and his passion comes across in his reviews for the scents he loves. Steven mentions that it’s a winter/fall fragrance, I adore these, especially ones with boozy/rum notes. Mix in cinnamon, vanilla & amber, and this is one that I can’t wait to try. The Hedione sounds like it makes this one stand out even further, and makes the fragrance seem all the more alluring and special. When Steven mentions just how unique Side Effect is, I take his word for it. It’s one that I simply must try!

Before reading Michelyn’s article, I had only heard Steven mention Hedione in the review for this fragrance. I think it’s very interesting that a science journal studied the molecule and found that physiologically, it’s irresistible…Side Effect indeed! I have not yet tried any fragrance from the Initio brand, but hopefully that will change and I can continue the science experiment!

  • didn’t know Steve was a chemical/science guy as well. I liked Michelyn’s connection to why Side Effect got it’s name. I’ve smelled it once, and liked it immediately and wondered what all the fuss was about Out for Greatness. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I think that Michelyn’s intro. concerning Hedione is informative. I think that it’s interesting that there is another fragrance (i.e. other than Dior’s “Eau Sauvage”) which contains Hedione, and happens to be popular. I’ve never tried this Initio fragrance, so Steven’s review helped me have a better understanding of it. I’m a subscriber to Steven’s channel, and I follow Cafleurebon on Instagram (@regismonkton). I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Robert Harris says:

Very detailed. I have to give this a try. I’ve heard the reaction to this from people is positive.

  • Side Effect to me sounds like a perfect signature gourmand scent. The notes like cinnamyl acetates and woods seem to create a sensual olfactory experience. As a chemist student, I am really fascinated by the hedione molecule in fragrances. I would love to smell this.

  • Loved the review from Redolessence. His description of notes made me super enthusiastic about smelling this. I own a designer fragrance, ‘Azzaro Wanted by Night” which shares similar notes of tobacco and cinnamon. But I can tell Initio Side Effect is in a different league of quality. Thank you

  • Steven always do a great job in painting a picture of fragrances and always give great recommendations on wearability. For someone new to fragrances he makes you want to just go out and just try it. Also this is my first time learning about hedione so the brief description it has surely peaked my interest.

  • Donald R Taylor says:

As usual good review I have oud for greatness and love it,side effect and oud for happiness is on the radar

  • Fredyne Lissade says:

Side effect is my favorite of Initio parfum. I can understand now that Hedione will give that side effect feeling on people. I bought a decant, received so many compliments from men and women as well. I’m now saving my coins to purchase a full bottle. Thank you Redolessence for that very honest review. You’re always on point.

  • Both video and introduction were very alluring. Steven’s video was really detailed and offered a lot of his own opinion about the fragrance and a lot of key details about packaging and such. I haven’t had the pleasure of smelling Side Effect yet but I know soon I’ll, I’m very intrigued by the Hedione note in this fragrance, I really can’t wait to try it. From this brand I love Oud for Greatness and Atomic Rose. I’m commenting from Orlando, Florida. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw.

  • Robert Gardner says:

Interesting read and informative video as always. I have a clone of Side Effect made by Genre Parfum which smells excellent so I would love the opportunity to smell the real thing by entering this giveaway, Thanks.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Steven, Michelyn.

It was cool to see Michelyn’s note about the research study that found that hedione stimulates the limbic region of the brain and the response is sex differentiated.

I love the unique play of notes in this scent. I appreciate Steven’s in depth review on this fragrance. It seems like this is in a different league of boozy and sweet fragrances! I do appreciate this Steven mentions that this is not a suitable summer fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Interesting read and informative video as always. I have a clone of Side Effect by Genre Parfums which smells excellent so I would love the opportunity to smell the real thing by entering this giveaway, Thanks.

  • I loved Steven’s review of such an amazing fragrance that could be a possible the best sexy pheromone elixir using Hedione explained well by Michelyn.
Steven explains the scent profile brilliantly and honestly. I would love to win a bottle of Initio Side Effect.
    Thanks for the giveaway!!! USA.

  • This was a good read, boozy and tobacco right up my alley. Very informative video as always Steven. I own a clone of Side Effect by Genre Parfum which is excellent and would love the opportunity to smell the real thing by entering into the giveaway, Thanks.

  • The public school educator in me really appreciated the introduction on Hedione because I’m a little nerdy. I have taken the time to test it in action with my gf and there’s definitely SOMETHING that makes it special. She loves tobacco vanilla combinations for date night and cuddling. I watch Redolessence and he does mention it a lot, but the fact that I can get a bottle would make my girlfriend and I very happy. My insta professional112 (so my entry can count twice)

  • As I sit here writing this comment, I am wearing Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum. While I was aware of Hedione in Initio Parfums Side Effect, I did not realize it was in Eau Sauvage. I can attest that my wife loves both of these fragrances on me…I also enjoy Side Effect on her, as well.
I almost always find Steven’s reviews to be consistent, well structured, and very informative. Of course, his review on Side Effect was no different. I enjoy his personal take on this fragrance and were it ranks personally for him. Like Steven, this is my favorite fragrance from this house. While fragrances like Oud For Greatness, Atomic Rose, Musk Therapy, and Rehab are some of my favorites, Side Effect holds a special place in my heart (and nose) 🙂 USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Michelyn’s Introduction and learning more about the synthetic molecule Hedione which has been used in perfumery since the 1960s and is an alternative to Jasmine Absolute. I also didn’t know that it’s supposed to stimulate the limbic area in the brain for women which is responsible for releasing pheromones. I love Steven’s review of Initio Side Effect. Through the years I have seen Steven feature it in many lists…most recently for his favorite holiday perfumes. It is a perfectly smooth tobacco enveloped in a creamy vanilla and accented with a warm and spicy cinnamon and boozy rum. I’ve had the opportunity to sample this fragrance and it has been on my wishlist for a long time. It is one of my favorite fragrances that I someday hope to own. I follow Cafleurebon on Instagram my insta name is michaelprincefragrance. I am from the USA.

  • Cool science intro from Michelyn and excellent video from Steven as usual! I would love to win a bottle of Side Effect and see/smell for myself! IG @markieballa

  • The only Initio Parfums I know is Side Effect, smells very similar to Vanilla Bean Bundt Cake , drizzled with Rum i do 3-4 times a week at my bakery.
It’s a gorgeous fragrance, no doubts about it.
Appreciate learning about the uniqueness of Hedione, the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Oh, that’s so interesting! I never knew that about hedione! Thank you for the opportunity to try this.

  • I wear fragrances for my own pleasure only. When I pick up a fragrance for a particular situation, my goal was never to drive woman crazy. Hedione could be developed as jasmine alternative, but to me it differs , it’s more fruity , there’s no indolic and carnal elements in it , at least to me. Maybe that was Firmenich goal to begin with in the 60s.
I’m well familiar with all Initio Parfums fragrances
If I have to share my favorite ones:
    1. Side Effect
    2. Oud for Greatness
    3. Oud for Happiness /Absolute Aphrodisiac
Steven review was spot on , Side Effect is such a fun and uplifting scent. It is sweeter, than I expected, and I also get leather. Performance is awesome.
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • We have one modern, multifaceted fragrance with a high compliment factor today. Being a vain man compliments are really important tome. Hedione information was a blast .
With Side Effect I’ll get a lot of positive attention, smelling amazing. The boozy tobacco touches
will give the fragrance modern vibe , making it more enigmatic.
    Overly exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I own Oud for Greatness , considered by many the best Initio Parfums fragrance , and I’m sure I’ll enjoy Side Effect just as much. The first one is formal occasions, day time fragrance only, Side Effect was made for the night, going out with friends for example . Long lasting fragrances are always welcome. I’m happy Side Effect is not one dimensional fragrance, but multifaceted scent of highest quality. I’m also curious how much tobacco I’d perceive , hopefully a lot.
Hedione I’ve heard of, first time I received a detailed description was in a Maison Francis Kurkdjian boutique, when I bought Oud Silk Mood . I’m not sure about the stimulation, and pheromone part of Hedion, but I’m sure Side Effect smells great.
    Thanks for the draw

  • IvanVelikov says:

Side Effect is right up my alley kind of fragrance, not overly aggressive, cozy , slightly sweet, with really round and soft rum , tobacco and the right amount Hedione . Perfectly hedonistic fragrance i’d love to win.
Pheromones kind of effects of Hedion i was not aware of, good to know.
In my possession right now is Oud for Happiness travel sprayer in 10ml . Now all Initio travel sprays are 10ml , previously they were 7.5ml
Thank you Michelyn, Steven and Fine Fragrances

  • Jason Hardison says:

Idk if I can smell Hedione. But If it works I’m in LOL. But non the less Side effect is my signature scent. I get so much attention when I wear it. Must own. 10/10.

  • Well made fragrance, with both spicy, boozy , sweet, resinous and woody elements. I love the way Michelyn and Steven described it , Side Effect sounds great.
What excites me is the most is the fine balance between rum , vanilla, tobacco and cinnamon.
How Dior were able to keep the Hedion for themselves for such a long time? There must be some true in the Hedion claims, since now so many brands are using it , not just Initio Parfums and Parfums de Marly, i know the two are connected.
In my mind i somehow envisioned Side Effect smelling like the Puerto Rican Coconut-Cinnamon Rum Cocktail. My simplified version if someone wonders
    3-4 cups of Rum
    coconut milk
    cream of coconut
    3 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    5-6 sticks cinnamon
I know Rehab , it’s part of the Hedonist collection. One of my husband’s favorite fragrances. Since i wear it too , i can say on him is really spicy, woody aromatic, but on me smells similar to Lavender French Hard Candy from L’Ami Provencal i buy for many, many years from Amazon.
Top opportunity, Cheers with my version of Puerto Rican Coconut-Cinnamon Rum Cocktail

Wow what an interesting perfume! I thought Michelyn’s introduction on Hedione was so educaitonal, with it’s focus on science and how Hedione was found to stimulate the limbic areas of the brain in women which are responsible for the release of pheromones. I love learning about the science behind perfumery and I particularly enjoyed peering at the chemical structure! And as for Steven’s video review, I thought it was fantastic how he breaks down some of the accords very specifically to it’s component notes – for example, how he describes the rum accord as having within it aspects of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and bay leaf all seamless melded together with the rum and vanilla to make the entire rum accord. I really appreciate how immaculately he describes how it presents itself to him step by step. That way, when I’m smelling it, I can go on the same journey with him, as if he is guiding me along the way.

  • I thought Steve’s review was honest and insightful. Now I am very interested to smell this fragrance. The introduction to hedione is very fascinating but have concern with long term effect.
