As steals the morn upon the night,

And melts the shades away. ~ from Handel’s As Steals the Morn, lyrics by Charles Jennens (inspired by Act V, Scene 1 from Shakespeare’s The Tempest)

Iris storm-footed sprang away…
and at a point between Samos and
Imbros of the high cliffs plunged in
the dark water, and the sea crashed moaning about her.” ~ excerpt from Homer’s Iliad

Goddess of sea and sky, Iris is the daughter of Thaumas (a sea god) and Electra (one of 3,000 Oceanids, a water nymph descendant of the Titan Oceanus). Iris means ‘messenger’; she is the personification of the rainbow and emissary to the gods – linking deities with humanity: a fleet-footed, golden-winged virgin goddess who is often depicted carrying a caduceus (the staff comprised of two intertwining snakes which represented eloquence, wisdom, negotiation and alchemy to the ancient Romans and Greeks). A mediator between heaven and earth, she is a perfect point of departure when considering In Fieri’s latest perfume, Orris in Vetyver: the betrothal of celestial and terrestrial elements.

In Fieri Orris in Vetyver commences with a slightly verdant edge; the tender piquancy of cautiously dosed pine needle catches the wearer off-guard with unanticipated delight. It’s earthy in a subtle manner which is properly terpenic, and feels at first flush to meld with a grassy vetiver. At this juncture, a higher-pitched amber and musk form a modern accord that tickles the senses, a little restive. In time, all the elements settle: orris reads as silver powder, the amber/musk notes assume a downy tenor, partnered by quiet woody tones. The overall effect resembles a variant of Shalimar – glowingly resinous, warm and singularly comforting. In Fieri Orris in Vetyver is diaphanous, a stream of multi-hued light which augurs beneficence. It spans the spheres with a weightless tread, as if one could sink into it surrounded by feathers and bathed in radiance. If the rainbow goddess Iris were to envelop herself in a scented cloud, In Fieri Orris in Vetyver would prove an excellent choice. Notes: orris, vetiver, pine needles, woods, amber, musk

  • Wow, this sounds wonderful! I love the notes list and would love to smell orris, pine needles, and vetiver together. The mythology surrounding Iris the goddess has always sparked my imagination and I appreciated Ida bringing that into her review, as well as her description of the perfume as a ‘betrothal of celestial and terrestrial elements’. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • I love the notes, i think that orris and vetiver should be a nice combinarion! I live in Orlando, florida.

  • Beautiful review as always from Ida! I wish I could write even half as good as she does. This fragrance is right up my alley. I love all the notes here. Especially pine needles and vetiver. Thank you for the draw! US.

  • I love the Greek Mythology references and image taken from my first Tarot Deck, the Mythic Takrot! I adore orris and this sounds unique and comforting.

  • Eloquently written as always, all things Iris related pique my interest! I was not, however aware of the mythology surrounding Iris, & for that information I thank you!

  • I always love Ida’s reviews. Her literary references always seem to capture the scent she is describing perfectly. Any review that mentions Shalimar has my attention as well! Thanks for the draw. In the US.

  • Thank you Ida for delivering this great review. I love Orris, it is one of my favorite notes on fragrances. I didn’t know a thing about the goddess Iris, but know I do and it is wonderful.
This fragrance seems like out of this world and would love to smell it soon.
    USA here.

  • I loved the imagery of glowing yet soft and comforting clouds that Ida evoked in her review! I’m in MN, USA

  • You had me at Shalimar. Pine and Vetiver can be hit or miss w me but it always depends on the composition. Oris in Vetyver as a combo does sound intriguing. In US

I’ve been exploring vetiver scents and enjoying the forest-like effect they can achieve. I also love a powdery orris, the way it can evoke both dirt and skin. Orris in Vetyver sounds like a peaceful walk through the woods.

  • I had no idea there was a goddess of Greek origin named Iris! I am a fan of iris scents so it delights me that she was the messenger, linking deities with humanity. Orris is a bridge scent to me, interacting so well with so many different types of notes. The combination of orris and vetiver, i. particular, is inspired. The green of vetiver sprinkled with the silver powder of orris is great imagery. The comparison with Shalimar is intriguing. Shalimar is one of those fragrances I’ve grown to love because of its comforting artistry. I would love to see how In Fieri Orris in Vetyver compares, Maryland, US.

  • I’m truly curious, I’ve never thought of orris as silver and yet with vetiver I can imagine it. I love a beautiful Orris root and light musk, a bright vetiver met with a warm amber. I love how ethereal this description is and the way it pulls you in to think of the notes in new and familiar ways. I will be looking for more reviews here. Only a nose to the skin is next!! California, USA

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a Beautiful review!!! I love love orris! Vetiver is slowly becoming a fast friend. This fragrance sounds so alluring! I remember reading about the house before (probably here!). Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! USA ❤️

I never knew there was a goddess named Iris! How interesting that she is the personification of the rainbow. I love the terpenic notes of pine, plus the grassy vetiver. And I like that Orris in Vetyver recalls the warmly resinous Shalimar.
    Thank you for the giveaway.

  • I’m a’ways impressed by how poetic and learned Çafleurebon reviews can be, and today I learned a bit about Iris in Greek mythology. I also enjoyed how you segued into the scent of this perfume—grassy terpines, silver iris, woods and resin. In Fieri Orris in Vetyver sounds lovely, but also tasteful in its restraint, making the most of a few notes. Thanks for the review, Ida.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Thanks for the great review, Ida.

I think what I found unusual about this fragrance was how a fragrance with vetiver in it was constructed to have so much radiance, sheerness and transparency.

    Cheers from WI, USA

What interests me about Ida’s review of In Fieri Orris in Vetyver is learning and discovering a new brand. Ida explains in detail about the Goddess of sea and sky, Iris is the daughter of Thaumas (a sea god) and Electra (one of 3,000 Oceanids, a water nymph descendant of the Titan Oceanus). This sounds like a beautiful fragrance I would love to try. I’m from the USA.

I appreciated Ida’s inclusion of the mythology surrounding Iris the goddess, which sparked my imagination. I, also, appreciated her breakdown of the fragrance, as well as her descriptuon of the fragrance as a ‘betrothal of celestial and terrestrial elements’.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I want to see what the notes/ ingredients in this fragrance are like, e.g. the pine needles and the orris. Ida caused me to be intrigued to try this fragrance. It seems like an interesting amber fragrance. I’m interested to see what this perfumer’s work is like. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Fantastic review Ida! What sparks my interest about Ida’s review of In Fieri Orris in Vetyver is how Ida uses Greek mythology as a jumping off point to contemplate and analyze the perfume, and how it connects aerial and earthy aspects into one perfume of contrasting elements. I also really like how she describes it as comforting warm and yet weightless similar to one of my favorite perfumes Shalimar. It definitely sounds like a perfume I want to try. I live in the US.
