Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs Review (Jacques Flori) + La Fête Nationale Française Draw

Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs review

Orange flowers, peels, pith, leaves, stems, trees and orange groves! Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs is the fragrant sum of all these citrus-y parts and more, a complete experience of everything that is orange, resting in a bouquet of white flowers, yang-ylang and spiced fruity roses.  The bitter orange trees that we know today probably originated in China more than two thousand years ago and have been growing in France since at least the early Middle Ages. In the 1600s bitter and sweet oranges, lemons and other citrus were cultivated, pampered and protected in large conservatories or greenhouses – the “Orangeries” of the wealthy, the aristocrats and kings.

Best Perfumes for Bastille Day

The Storming of the Bastille by Jean-Pierre Houël, 1789.

As an indirect result of the  “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity” brought to us by the French Revolution, I like to imagine that oranges, once considered luxuries reserved for the rich and powerful, have become, over the years, a delicious and fragrant part of everyday life.  Orange trees, and their flowers and fruits, inspire a number of citrus themed festivals all over Europe, especially in Southern France. As a new EU citizen of Luxembourg, I am happy to celebrate my French neighbors’ holiday, Bastille Day, July 14, 2019 with the complex and realistic orange blossom perfume that is Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs.

Jean-Francois Houbigant

 Jean-Francois Houbigant via Houbigant Paris

The Perfume House of Houbigant was originally established in 1775, several years before the French Revolution, serving mainly royalty and the rich from its first shop in Paris at 19, rue du Faubourg Saint- Honoré.  Today Houbigant Paris continues to supply fragrances to some of the same royal families, but now also offers beautiful perfumes for everyone, scents that are at once refined and accessible.

J.J Grandville from his Les Fleurs Animées  1847

Orangers en Fleurs is an elegant fragrance that takes me from the sharp and angular freshness of the leaves and stems and the tight young orange flower buds, to the honeyed warmth of the blossoms and the first juicy bite of the table version of the fruit. Created for Houbigant in 2012 by perfumer Jacques Flori (lauded for his work with Xerjoff, Parfums de Marly, Balmain, Jovoy Paris  and so many others), Orangers en Fleur is a breezy, blithe and buoyant bouquet suggesting groves of bitter and sweet orange trees blooming and fruiting in the South of France.

Best Orange Blossom Perfumes

Young Woman Picking Oranges by Berthe Morisot, 1889.

Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs begins with the tree itself and the sharp, green angular and naturally fresh qualities of the leaves and twigs.  Just a touch of Petigrain’s vegetal smelling cousin, Eau de Brouts, creates a realistic first impression that extends throughout the life of the fragrance. The centerpiece of Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs is an extravagant garland of orange blossoms, tuberose, jasmine and rose, a citrusy version of the nectarous floral heart that the House of Houbigant is so famous for.  This richly aromatic bouquet is judiciously highlighted with hints of peppered, woody nutmeg.  While Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs should not be classified as soliflore; I find there is a subtle progression from trees to flowers and then to a kind of juicy fruit, the result of the combination of the orange blossoms, leaves, sweet cedar wood and musk. Orangers en Fleurs has, unlike many citrus perfumes, a considerable longevity that is at once tenacious, subtle, lively, fresh and free. What better way to celebrate Bastille Day, 2019!

Notes: Orange Blossom, Rose Absolute, Egyptian Jasmine Absolute, Tuberose, Eau de Brouts, Ylang Comores, Nutmeg, Cedarwood and Musk.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Houbigant for my much loved bottle of Orangers en Fleurs Eau de Parfum. My opinions are my own.

Orangers en Fleurs seems like a fragrance that tries to translate not just orange blossom but the entire tree of orange blossoms including its leaves. It starts like a soliflore before transitioning to its floral phase and ending with woody elements. my fav from Houbigant is Fougere Royale which I have in both vintage original formula and modern version. I am in US.

  • I love the orange blossom my favorite is Neroli Intense by pnicolai, I liked also dilettante by Hiram Green but it does not have a great wake. Secret du Paradis Rouge by Jul&Mad is very beautiful but not realistic enough. Pichola by Neela Vermeire has a lot of orange blossoms but it’s more a fragrance of big white flowers. Seville à l’aube by l’Artisan Parfumeur is beautiful but has no longevity. Casablanca by St Clair is the one I dream of wearing this winter. Why I want to try Houbigant Orangers en fleurs? Because Gail says it’s a perfume: “realist” or we can smell “green and naturally fresh leaves and twigs”, “flowering trees”, “one longevity at a time tenacious”.I live in France.

  • The description sounds like a work of art. “…sharp and angular freshness of the leaves and stems and the tight young orange flower buds, to the honeyed warmth of the blossoms and the first juicy bite of the table version of the fruit”, Bravo!

  • Gerald Martin Moore says:

This review is so beautifully descriptive it is mouthwatering. Houbigant is one of my most favourite houses so I would love to try this one!

  • Lately I have come to appreciate orange blossom in perfumes. It had been my least favorite white flower but lately I realize just how great it really is. Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs is a perfume that highlights everything from the tree to the blossoms to the fruit. It also contains jasmine, tuberose, ylang, and rose. I love them all. I have not tried any Houbigant. Live in the US.

  • Really nice description and the bottle and presentation are beautiful. While i’m not the biggest fan of floral scents, orange blossom and neroli are great in perfumery. I would love to try it, thanks for the chance, EU.

  • DespinaVnt says:

I loved Gail’s description of the fragrance as an “extravagant garland of orange blossoms, tuberose, jasmine and rose, a citrusy version of the nectarous floral heart that the House of Houbigant is so famous for”. This sounds absolute delightful, especially considering the tenacity that Gail also mentions. I’d love to win this, thank you. Joyeux Quatorze Juillet, and best from France!

  • smellslikehappiness says:

Oh my goodness, this sounds like heaven! Orange and white flowers, how does it get better than that? Thank you for the draw, live in the US.

  • I’ve been wanting to try this since it came out, and suspect it will be my favorite. I like how the review describes many parts of the Citrus tree. I am fond, ahem, really love almost all citrus! Thank you for the draw, I live in the US.

  • Crisstyyn says:

OMG! OMG! i absolutely looove this fragrance. In my opinion it’s the best summer perfume. I would be so very happy to win this draw It is definitely my favourite from Houbigant. What an amazing mix of orange blossoms, tuberose, jasmine and rose. I cannot have enough of it..

I really enjoyed reading Gale’s review and my message to French people all over the world is:
“Vive la France éternelle! Je t’aime vraiment!”

  • Dubaiscents says:

Orange blossom is a favorite note of mine so, I was quickly drawn into this review. I am sure a house like Houbigant makes an orange blossom scent to beat al others! I would love to try it! I don’t think I’ve ever tried a Houbigant scent which is quite unbelievable considering their history. Thanks for the lovely review. I live in the US.

  • We are so blessed to be able to enjoy citruses. It’s sad to think, that once, only the wealthy were able to taste an orange. Thanks for another informative article! USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

I used to pick oranges in massive groves in Orange County CA before all the subdivisions took over. Hard to believe they were the fruit of the wealthy and grown in greenhouses. I believe I have smelled one Houbigant fragrance at Nordstrom, but I cannot remember which one or my impression. I was unaware that Houbigant has been around such a long time. I love that this fragrance has some longevity, never had a citrus like that before. Happy Bastille Day, thanks for the reminder I shall cook something French! I’d love to win this. USA.

  • MissJanners says:

I enjoyed the brief history of Houbigant Parfums. I knew they were an older house, but I didn’t realize how far back they actually go. So cool that we still have houses from the 1700s around today. I have never tried any of their fragrances, but a lovely orange blossom scent seems like a great place to start.
Thanks for the giveaway! I’m in Canada.

  • And again this one sounds like a flowerpotion from heaven. So classy, classic and timeless. My favorite Houbigant (and the only one I know) is Quelques fleurs. I am from the EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • strangedim says:

The whole review paints a wonderful picture. I especially like the description of the subtle progression from leaves to flower to juicy fruit. I also found interesting that The Perfume House of Houbigant was established 200 years before I was born. And seeing the painting of a young woman picking oranges made me think of her unknown life… Thank you for a wonderful review. Regards from EU.

  • Thank you for the review! I enjoyed Gail’s detailed description of the complexity of Orangers en Fleurs which is more than a simple soliflore. About Houbigant I only know about the vintage Fougère smelled at Osmothèque. I’ve love to discover more about the brand.
Thank you for the draw. I live in France.

  • I enjoyed reading Gale’s great review today, when most of us are wearing a french perfume, as a tribute to this extraordinary country.
Orangers en Fleur sounds like a piece of art: a subtle progression from trees to flowers and then to a kind of juicy fruit.
Thank you for the draw, live in Romania.

  • Houbigant is such a famous brand and I can’t believe I don’t have this. My favorite is Houbigant Quelques Fleur vintage and I did buy the new Jean Claude Ellena Rare essence which is gorgeous. I love orange blossom and Gail describes this as much more than a soliflore
    I live in the USA

  • carlos_lager says:

Happy Bastille Day! Thank you for the beautiful and very descriptive review. I love Houbigant and own two of their fragrances. This one I havent tried yet, but will definitely do as soon as I can. Thank you for the chance of winning a bottle. Greetings from Austria

  • Thanks for this wonderful review, Gail! I love fragrances that feature orange as its main according. I love this part of your review- ‘centerpiece of Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs is an extravagant garland of orange blossoms, tuberose, jasmine and rose, a citrusy version of the nectarous floral heart’. My favorite Houbigant fragrance is Iris des Champs. Thanks for this opportunity! – CA, USA

  • Orangers en Fleurs sounds perfect for me! I always think orange blossoms smell like SweetTarts candy, which I love. Gail describes it with a honeyed warmth that just sings Spring/Summer to me. Essence Rare has been my favorite Houbigant scent. But, there is always room for more… Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA

  • The thought of fresh, tarty oranges in a bottle makes my pallets water. Looking at what this brand stands for, I would love applying a spritz of this delicious wealth to my body on those special occasions. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • As a fan of Houbigant’s Quelques Fleurs, I am especially happy to hear about this draw. I enjoyed the description of the notes and I am guessing that the tuberose and ylang ylang add creaminess in addition to juiciness. The fragrance’s persistence also makes this especially appealing. I live in the USA.

  • I am not familiar with this brand, but the review is very enjoyable. And this bottle is fabulous. And from the base of the notes it could smell heavenly. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • BlessedTA says:

Great review. It is very descriptive.

My favorite is Lutece. Thanks for the chance, I’m in Canada.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love orange. This one sounds wonderful, incorporating every bit of the orange, tree and all. The addition of the nutmeg scent sounds beautiful. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • This house is one with such a long history! I love this review, is so descriptive and the perfume seems really delightful. I remember Chantilly from my mother, she loved so much this perfume in my childhood. I live in Romania (EU)

  • Doni Light says:

Don’t have a favourite from the house – although Fougere Royale is a strong contender – but I absolutely loved Gail’s opening historical treatise. Descriptions of the fragrance are very much in keeping with my image of southern France – a veritable haven of orange, florals and greenery. Canada.

  • I enjoyed reading the review because it outlines the notes very well. I love that this is has a spiced fruity rose. Longevity is a plus for me.
    I live in USA.

  • I have tried this and love it, as I am always looking for my hg orange blossom. I I haven’t tried other houbigant scents, so this would be my favorite… I enjoyed hearing about all the different facets of this orange scent. Thank you for the draw and the review!

  • NiceVULady says:

Loved the history from Gail’s review. The house of Houbigant has been a family favorite since the time of my grandmother. This sounds like a simply delicious fragrance. It would awesome to try it. Thanks for a great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA.

  • Thank you Gail for the review, the history of Houbigant and the giveaway. I’ve only put my nose on Houbigant Cologne Intense and liked it quite a lot. I love oranges and citrus scents and would love to try out Orangers en Fleurs. I’m in TX USA

  • I love orange blossoms and citrus, that’s why I would love to try Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs. This really comes to live during summer. Love the Fougere Royale by Houbigant. Great review! Live in Europe

  • Sounds like Houbigant once again created an amazing white floral. I’d be thrilled to try this. I love the legendary Fougere royale. From EU

  • I had no idea this house was that old! My favorite part of this review was learning the history. I’m a sucker for tuberose. Canada

  • I’m swooning over these notes! I love perfumes with orange blossom. But this one has a nice woody drydown that softens the citrus notes. It sounds so pretty. I don’t own any Houbigant scents but would love to have this one be my first. This is definitely on my wishlist.
    I live in the US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I would love to smell like an extravagant garland of citruses and florals. I’m in the USA.

  • peppermoon says:

Oh my gosh! I love this scent and I really want to win this one!! I’m an orange blossom lover and Houbigant has a gorgeous honeyed/dewy version. I actually love that it’s not too sharp or petitgrain heavy on my skin – I tend to prefer very rounded out and sensual orange blossom scents. The bottle is also gorgeous with that coppery etched metal name plate. I’ve been using decants of it for a while. It’s my favorite Houbigant scent, though I’m also fond of Quelques Fleurs Royale for its rich mimosa honey note.

Happy Bastille Day! It’s nice to be reminded by Gail that we’re lucky to live in a time where beautiful perfumes are not just for royalty.

  • Mihaela Ungureanu says:

“Orangers en Fleurs has, unlike many citrus perfumes, a considerable longevity that is at once tenacious, subtle, lively, fresh and free.” intregued me in Gail’s description, although my favourite fragrance by Houbigant is Quelque fleurs royale!!! From Romania with love !

  • My favorite part of the review was the history of the place of the orange tree in France. Such romantic associations! I own a huge vintage bottle of absolutely pristine Chantilly, and I have to say it has become a favorite, but orange blossom is possibly my most loved note in all of perfumery, so I would love to smell this one. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Had no idea this house was so old! I got a sample of fougere royale from a fragrance swap I once partook in and although Im not the biggest fan of fougeres, was quite surprised by it. Definitely am surprised at just how much history the house has. From California.

  • Great review by Gail! This fragrance sounds amazing and sophisticated. I had no idea that oranges were a luxury before the French Revolution. My favorite line was: “The centerpiece of Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs is an extravagant garland of orange blossoms, tuberose, jasmine and rose, a citrusy version of the nectarous floral heart that the House of Houbigant is so famous for. This richly aromatic bouquet is judiciously highlighted with hints of peppered, woody nutmeg. While Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs should not be classified as soliflore; I find there is a subtle progression from trees to flowers and then to a kind of juicy fruit, the result of the combination of the orange blossoms, leaves, sweet cedar wood and musk.” My favorite Houbigant fragrances are: Apercu and Quelques Fleurs Royal. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • jeremyn87 says:

I love orange blossom. It’s one of my fav notes. Especially when it captures the Mediterranean. And this said the performance is better than usual for the style.
Im not that familiar with the house, but I love fougere royale. Im in IL in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • Clear, radiant orange blossoms that speak of sunshine and happiness. Begins strong , almost strident and full in your face orange blossom with that great nutmeg pairing and remains so. All the other notes are supporting players only. Fantastic comment Gail.
I had a sample and would love to have a bottle of this orange nectar. Arek Poland

  • tuiu silver says:

I will start by saying that I’m a floral lover.
Gail’s review really caught my eyes…
The way that Gail described the transition from a green, fresh and bright opening, to a beautiful warm and beautifully rich bouquet of rose, jasmim and tuberose. The fruity drydown, coming from sweet cedar wood + orange blossom + musk sound just delicious to me.
My favorite from this house is Iris des Champs: a beautiful powdery, woody and floral/fresh fragrance.
I would like to join this draw please, I’m from US.

  • doveskylark says:

I enjoyed reading about the history of this venerable house and also of the importance of orange trees in French botanical history. I like how this fragrance contains all elements of the orange, including the pith and the twigs. I haven’t tried anything from this house.
    I live in the USA.

  • From the review I assume that Orangers en Fleurs is classy, a little bit vintage kind of perfume. Which I actually like. Review style and the fragrance seem to match.
I am not very familiar with Houbigant. I only know Iris des Champs which I like – it is so earthy and, in the same time, airy.
    I live in Poland.

  • Some time ago I ordered some Houbigant fragrances samples so I got Orangers en Fleurs, Quelque Fleurs l’Original, and Iris des Champs. When I read the review, I remembered that most of all I liked Orangers en Fleurs. Now I own and absolutely love Quelques Fleurs L’Original and Quelques Fleurs Royale. What I like about the review is that it explains so well the development of the fragrance, from the trees to the fruit. I recently watched the ‘Versailles’ series, and now I can add, in my mind, to the beautiful scenery of the movie, exactly this scent, of Orangers en Fleurs. I live in Bucharest, Romania.

  • Haven’t got a chance to try a Houbigant fragrance. This sounds like a really nice orange blossom fragrance. Thanks, US

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

How spoiled we all are now to be able to walk into any grocery store and pick up an orange… wealthy or not! I haven’t tried too many Houbigants but I do own Quelques Fleurs Royale which I love. I’m a big fan of neroli and white flowers so I’d love to try this one, I’m in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

Gail, great review of Houbigant Paris Orangers en Fleurs. I enjoyed reading about the history of Orange Trees and Houbigant. This sounds like a fabulous citrus, orange blossom, floral, and a woody musk in the base. I haven’t tried anything from Houbigant. I am a subscriber from the USA.

  • “Trees to flowers to fruit” makes this fragrance sound divine! My favorite Houbigant is vintage Quelque Fleurs which has wonderful memory associations for me. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!
