Houbigant Paris La Belle Saison Review (Celine Ellena) 2020 + Collection Privee Draw

Houbigant La Belle Saison

Vintage Houbigant La Belle Saison, photo by Christie’s

Once upon a time, a Houbigant floriental perfume La Belle Saison was composed by Robert Bienaime, released in 1925, in a bottle designed by Rene Lalique. The times, they’re a-changing – this perfume was discontinued decades ago, yet the beautiful weather, sunshine after rain, and blooming flowers – aren’t. They are an inexhaustible source of inspiration!

Houbigant Paris La Belle Saison of 2020, created by Celine Ellena (born and raised in Grasse), is not an attempt to recreate the fragrance from the past. This is a new, luminous, and at the same time comforting creation – a multi-floral bouquet of flowers with an air of effortless elegance that’s so characteristic for Houbigant’s takes on what I refer to as the 5Fs (Fine French Feminine Floral Fragrances)–like my beloved Essence Rare (Jean Claude Ellena recreating Jean Claude Ellena, 2018 or historically, dating back to Houbigant Paris’ Le Parfum Ideal by Paul Parquet (1900).

La Belle Saison begins with brighter colors and sunnier days, adding that little extra spring to your step due to nicer weather and the first flowers blooming! As days grow longer, flower bouquets become lusher, changing scent profiles and colors— from white, pale pink or yellow to bright orange, deep red or vivid purple. Primavera! A celebration of senses! And when light spring or summer rains fall upon the earth, it rejoices by releasing scent molecules to waft merrily in the air, just like aerosol! As moisture in the air helps odor molecules to rise with sunshine after rain, so it helps us to smell better – our sense of smell is simply stronger in the humid air. The fragile elegance of spring and the sensual opulence of summer are best felt after periods of soft rain falling.

best Houbigant fragrances for women

La Belle Saison today is a golden-hued fragrance that feels like sunshine after the first spring rain falling upon clusters of mimosa flowers that are regaining their fluffiness as raindrops  evaporate. These moments of initial delicate pink and bright yellow floral tenderness and brightness with just a suggestion of fruitiness, are enhanced with honeyed layers that gradually give more depth to this composition.

Delicate and soft, orange blossoms seem sprinkled with mimosa pollen. Their inner warmth slowly glows with almondy undertones and just a pinch of pink pepper spiciness. Slight herbal nuances seem to balance any sweetness, pulling you into an elegant and powdery cloud of bright lushness, with no thorns at all. As the fragrance develops further, the mimosa retreats into the background. As soothing leaves and a gently whispering trail of balsamic softness meld with white florals and become denser, the deeply settled amber and musk tones begin to unveil their charms. Now the fragrance moves towards the latter stages of its drydown, a serene sophistication takes over. Houbigant La Belle Saison feels like a deep warm breath of flowers in a rain-soaked garden that bathes and unveils all of its beauty in sunshine.

Notes (as listed by the brand): Apricot flower, Pink pepper, Mimosa, Orange blossoms, Lily of the Valley, Sandalwood, Musk, Ciste Labdanum

  • Elena says La Belle Saison feels like sunshine and mimosa plays a prominent role in the composition. It is a revival of a classic Houbigant perfume but a different composition now. My fav. from Houbigant is Fougere Royale. USA

  • Elena describes the fragrance beautifully with words like sunshine and rain, I can almost feel the warmth of the fragrance. I also enjoyed how she took us on a olfactory journey from top notes to middle and base notes. This fragrance seem right up my alley with notes like orange blossom, lily of the valley and labdanum, sandalwood in the base. Currently don’t own any from houbigant. I live in the US.

I live in the US and do not have a favorite Houbigant Paris perfume or cologne, yet. I enjoyed this part of Elena’s review,”Delicate and soft, orange blossoms seem sprinkled with mimosa pollen. • Elena your photos are really amazing. My favorite from the house is Fougere Royale. I live in Germany.

  • I really like houbigant especially orangery et fleuri and my husband loves fougere royale
Sunny days and mimosa I am in the Eu

  • Elena describes it as 5F ( Fine French Feminine Floral Fragrance ). I don’t own one Houbigant so I have no favorites yet. IL, USA.

  • Elena’s review was very informative and I enjoyed the way she described the beautiful notes that went into this amazing sounding fragrance. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • I like the sound of first spring rain falling upon clusters of mimosa flowers! Add on to that delicate pink and bright yellow floral tenderness with some fruitiness and a very pretty bottle…looks like a winner! While a bit too masculine for my taste my favorite Houbigant Paris perfume to smell on people is Fougere Royale. I live in the USA.

  • I agree that Houbigant is a grand old house. My favorite from the line is Orangers en Fleurs. That’s probably why this line in the description stood out to me: ” Delicate and soft, orange blossoms seem sprinkled with mimosa pollen.” Thanks for the review. USA

  • Trinity33 says:

I’ve never really thought about how humidity affects the perception of floral scent. I’m familiar with the smell of ozone after a thunderstorm and the “cleanliness” of the air after a rain shower. Next time I’ll take notice of how the flowers in my garden smell. Mimosa, lily of the valley and orange blossom speak of spring. I would love to sniff apricot blossoms. Overall, sounds like a lovely composition. Favorite Houbigant is Quelques Fleurs. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • There’s nothing like the scent of a garden after a rainfall. I love that Ms Elena describes Paris La Belle Saison that way. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Houbigant, but thanks for this opportunity. Mich USA

  • I love how Elena describes this as “orange blossom petals sprinkled with mimosa pollen.” This perfume is happiness in a bottle! I don’t have a favorite Houbigant Paris perfume but this one could definitely be it. I live in the USA.

  • ‘Sunshine after the first spring rain falling upon clusters of mimosa flowers that are regaining their fluffiness as raindrops evaporate.’ Wow! What a description! I can picture the scene in my mind already. Would love to try it out! Haven’t tried anything from the house yet.
    Florida, USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

The loved the evocative portrait of rain-drenched mimosa–I definitely could envision that scene! I love houbigant scents past (including Fougere Royale in 50s era cologne) and present (like the vintage-feeling Essence Rare). Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US.

  • What I enjoyed most about Elena’s review was how bright and vibrant her words were, perfectly able to match and describe the scent.

My favourite from the house is fougere royale.

What a evocative review. I can just feel the flowers and the gentle rain releasing their scent. Thank you Elena for a beautiful review and thank you to Houbigant for their most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I like the idea of a perfume that tries to capture that feeling after the rain, when there is sunshine and the flowers are soaked in soothing drops of water. This idea gives me an impression of calmness and total relax
I am in EU. Thank you!

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

I like this Houbigant Paris La Belle Saison it is feminine, floral, elegant and powdery, soft sweetness.

  • My favourite Houbigant perfume is “Mon Boudoir”.
I loved Elena’s review the way she talked about the first spring rain falling upon clusters of mimosa flowers

  • I enjoyed the way Elena describes the perfume – the review is like a cheerful and bright painting of a summer morning – flowers, fluffy clouds, bright and crispy air… The perfume must be beautiful. So far, my favourite Houbigant perfume is Mon Boudoir. I live in Romania, EU.

  • Flowery, peppery, sunny, what a cheery, calming fragrance Houbigant La Belle Saison is, in these flowery, peppery, sunny, but uncharacteristically gloomy times. Enjoyed the review by Elena, reading the description as well as watching the pictures. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying out any Houbigant Paris perfumes, yet. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • The photo of the vintage bottle is amazing. Also, I really like the idea of 5Fs about Houbigant fragrances. I’m a huge fan of Orangers en Fleurs, Iris des Champs and Essence Rare. I would very much like to have a bottle of this beauty.
Thanks Elena for the review and Ca FleureBon for the draw, as always.
    I’m from USA.

  • Elena’s reviews, as usual, add a lot of interesting elements for the appreciation of a perfume. I smelled La belle saison yesterday evening, for the first time! My fav Houbingant is another JC Ellena masterpiece, Essence Rare.
I live in Italy. Thanks for the draw!

My favorite thing about this review is how visually and sensually descriptive it is. Wow. I also live that alliteration: “pinch of pink pepper spiciness.” I don’t yet have a Houbigant Paris fragrance but I’d love to. Sounds amazing! From Chicago, IL, US.

These moments of initial delicate pink and bright yellow floral tenderness and brightness with just a suggestion of fruitiness, are enhanced with honeyed layers that gradually give more depth to this composition. A beautiful description by Elena. I am intrigued by the notes especially Sandalwood and musk. Houbigant is a house that I am not familiar with I am afraid. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Elena writes that the mimosa pollen seem to sprinkle the range blossom. This sounds very beutifu and delcate. Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • Christos GX says:

I loved the description of the fragrance,Elena gave a scenery though her description.I do not have a favorite fragrance from that particular house(lets hope these would be the one).I live in Greece

  • wandering_nose says:

I absolutely adore Elena’s photographs! They make me want to reach for the bottle and smell the perfume asap! The description she treats us to opens the gate to the secret garden from every girl’s childhood dreams… I love deep powdery and ambery/ musky florals with mimosa and almond notes, my favourite out of Houbigant creations I had a chance to try was Quelques Fleurs Royale. I am in the EU

  • I love the way Ellena doesn’t just list notes and descriptions, she brings in colors and light so you can really get an idea of the feeling of the scent. I live in the USA and I haven’t really tried Houbigant Paris perfumes. They do sound like they are right up my alley.

  • Delightful. Elena’s review highlights the beauty and sophistication of this scent, and the 5Fs is both funny and apt. I don’t have a favorite Houbigant Paris Perfume and I live in the US

  • The description of summer, rain, and sunshine is so engaging by Elena. I was pulled right into the article with the 5Fs “Fine French Feminine Floral Fragrances”. Very engaging and fun! I do not have any of Houbigant fragrances. Thank you for the chance to win one. USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the excellent review Elena.

I love the image that you give us which this perfume evokes
“La Belle Saison today is a golden-hued fragrance that feels like sunshine after the first spring rain falling upon clusters of mimosa flowers that are regaining their fluffiness as raindrops evaporate”

I’ve only ever smelt Houbigant’s famous fougere.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • This was such a verbally and aesthetically pleasing article. The soft tones of yellow and Elena’s choice of words, so mellow and soothing with no rough edges, I believe captured this perfume perfectly. I would love to smell this classy, womanly symphony of white and yellow flowers grounded by precious musky and balsamic notes.
I am in the EU and of course I love the classic Quelques fleurs, another opulent and utterly important perfume.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever tried a Houbigant perfume before but a “ warm breath of flowers in a rain soaked garden” couldn’t sound more perfect! I’m in the UK

  • Hashim Madani says:

What stands out to me is the elegant powdery cloud Elena describes. The most beautiful floral I’ve ever smelled is Houbigant Quelques Fleurs l’Original, which was released in 1912 and precedes Chanel No. 5. VA, USA.

  • How interesting! I never knew that humidity increased our sense of smell. It makes sense though — our county fair is this week and I have such strong scent memories of walking past the lemon shake-up stands, the corn dogs and other deep fried treats, the handmade waffle cone ice cream stands and other delicacies amidst the humid Indiana-in-July heat. This would be my first Houbigant Paris fragrance, though I have swooned over the brand and especially their gorgeous packaging for quite some time. The floral yet musky nature of La Belle Saison sounds delightful for this time of year! USA

  • chrisskins says:

Fougere Royale is my favorite Houbigant; not just for the fellas! This reimagination of Paris La Belle Saison sounds beautifully feminine with shower of rain to keep it from being too much. I live in the USA.

  • Oh, this sounds just so lovely and cheerful and perfect for summer! I have tried their orange blossom and love it, and this review makes la Belle saison sounds luminous. Thank you for the lovely review and the draw! In the us

  • Valentina says:

The art of flaconage is incredible… I adore all Lalique’s works and I share their story with everybody eager to listen to me. Houbigant will always be close to my heart due to their My Budoir perfume dedicated to one of my country’s Queen’s. Thank you, Elena, for this review in which the words melt so beautiful together with the words. I live in the EU.

  • Unfortunately, I have no experience with houbigant perfumes yet and so I hope it’s gonna be my first encounter with this brand. Mimosa pollen, orange blossom and labdanum are what I need in one perfume. Rest of the notes sounds great too. And of course that bottle, gosh so pretty! It will surely be a gem in my collection. I am in Germany

  • ElenaChiss says:

I am curious by this one in seeing how a classic fragrance is reinterpreted in a modern manner. Old perfumes, vintage, are really an acquired taste, so to take a vintage and to morph it into something new, adapted to our days, I think it’s no easy job.
I am from Romania, Europe. Thanks!

  • I enjoyed how the review put a picture in my head of a nice sunny day in a flower garden which turned rainy for a bit and then the sun came back out and warmed and dried everything again with the rain and sun causing scents to emit from the flowers and plants and with the sun comes a warming feeling. I’ve not tried any fragrances from Houbigant Paris to date. Thanks for the generous draw from the U.S.

  • I’m very drawn to this new sunny and soft fragrance from Houbigant. Elena did a wonderful job describing it and I especially enjoyed the part about the orange blossom being dappled with mimosa, a flower I have many memories tied to. My favorite Houbigant fragrance is the classic Quelques Fleurs. In the USA.

  • La Belle Saison is a sumptuous floral bouquet, gold and white, luminous and silky, in the image of spring femininity: that which one discovers on the wonderful paintings of Botticelli. Grace, elegance and voluptuousness: a sensuality that is revealed with each gesture. A captivating sillage, an unparalleled signature…

  • Hadley Farlow says:

I didn’t realize Houbigant was that big of a perfume house in the early 20th century. Even the great Coty was an admirer of them. Fascinating!

Thank you for the very generous draw.

  • Kenny Clinton says:

I was thrilled to learn Houbigant’s Quelques Fleurs was the first modern floral fragrance and that other perfume houses attempted their own version—even L’Air du Temps by Nina Riccu.

Houbigant Was The Company! In the 1700’s they were the favorite of the French Royal family the favorite of Marie Antoinette Louis Napoleon and Josephine, Then in the 1800’s to the 1900’s the company grew themselves into a huger international company. They Had great modern technology at the time and made fragrances that are a joy to wear. Houbigant still is The Perfume company!!!

  • Baxter Bartlett says:

I’m so glad to be learning more about Houbigant! You hear so much about Guerlain fathering modern perfumery, but Houbigant deserves credit in there as well. I didn’t realize they were responsible for creating Fougere genre, nor that Francois Coty wanted to buy the company. I have a few of their recent older fragrances, Lutece, Raffinee, and Demi-Jour along with current formula of Quelques Fleur l’Original (all Houbigant, before they sold some of those fragrances to Dana). Thank you so much for a lovely article and generosity for sharing some beauties from your collection.

  • Brazier Beard says:

Tonight wearing Paris La Belle Saison & with Parfum Orangers en Fleur The fragrances blend very well. they both have that wonderful note that is distinctive to Houbigant”s perfumes and then they both have orange blossom pettigrain and beautiful the soft lactonic notes in the Orangers En Fleur. the aldehydes of Chantilly gives the floral notes of Orangers more burst and bubble. a perfect Harmony rhapsody melody.

I did not realize that Houbigant was the originator of the fougere family of perfumes. I would love to try Paris La Belle Saison. Thank you so much for the interesting article and giveaway!

  • Bayntun Beavers says:

I knew Houbigant as founder of the fougere family, but I did not know that their creations were also innovative in the compositions of floral fragrances. I am fascinated by the collaboration between Houbigant and Mucha.
I know Paris La Belle Saison and I like it very much, so I’d love to try it.

  • David Cooper says:

Interesting to know that the house of Houbigant is one of the first houses to create a connection between the smell and the visual, with theit pavillon and arrangements at the fair from 1900.

    Thank you!

  • Thank you for introducing us into the world of vintage. For quite a few years I’m interested in niche perfumes. I tried a lot of the beautiful scents out there. But I don’t know the first thing about vintage perfumes, so I for one will be very happy to read your bi monthly series.

I actually didn’t know much about Houbigant. I have read about Quelques Fleurs of course, but I didn’t know the impact that Houbigant had on perfumery in general.

    It sounds absolutely delicious.

Hi! I really liked to find out that Houbigant can be credited for the Floriental and Floral families of perfumes, besides the Fougere.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • hayden thomas says:

Houbigant what a name with such history in perfumery. What impressed me is the fact that even Coty wanted to buy the House of Houbigant because he was a great admirer of their creations.
Houbigant creators were the first ones that introduced this sense of luxury into their creations both in the perfume itself and in the bottle (imagine that Lalique designed their bottles) and packaging …
Thank you for letting me know about this House which is the first time I am being informed about it.

  • rowanatkinsonbui says:

I had no idea Houbigant were at the forefront of perfumery and had so much influence on it. It was so interesting to learn that soliflores had been the norm prior to this. To be so good that Coty wanted to buy them out is quite the compliment! And I’ve got a bit of an obsession with Art Nouveau and Alphonse Mucha, so I was thrilled to see those labels. Just gorgeous!

thank you for such an amazingly generous draw! USA

  • congressman says:

That was so interesting! I didn’t know a thing about Houbigant, and I did not know that ferns have no smell (at least in Europe). I should pick one come spring. So, Houbigant not only invented Fougere but conceptual scent. Fantastic! They deserve much praise for this (though the idea was certainly in Japanese culture).

  • Thank you Elena for the review. I had also noticed that it feels like smells are more enhanced after a drizzle. La Belle Saison sounds like a bright breadth of fresh air after the rain. My favorite Houbigant Paris perfume is Cologne Intense. I’m in USA

I love the warm sunny comforting fragrance of mimosa in perfume but I don’t think I’ve ever smelled it in real life. This sounds gorgeous with the amber and musk. Thank you for the draw from the US.

  • I’ve worn Quelques Fleurs for a couple of decades. I haven’t tried any of the flankers or Privee line, but look at that bottle! I just love it and it brings back happy memories for me. I’d love to give this one a try and I enjoyed the review. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

Elena, amazing review of Houbigant Paris La Belle Saison. A brilliant recreation of a discontinued gem!!! A floral bouqet that possesses modern touches and endless freshness. My favorite Houbigant fragrance is Fougere Royale 2010. I am from the USA.

  • Pixiedust2 says:

Elena had me at “Their inner warmth slowly glows with almondy undertones and just a pinch of pink pepper spiciness”. Another beautiful mimosa review this week! I’m a fan of that almond undertone some mimosa perfumes carry.

I still haven’t been lucky enough to try anything from Houbigant quite yet, but would love the opportunity to try La Belle Saison. I live in the US.

  • immortano26 says:

Wow so detailed review. Just incredible. I teleported to another beautifully smelling world while reading that review. you just know women’s hand wrote it. Btw such a magnificient bottle! I live in EU

  • I enjoyed how Elena described how this fragrance has the same effect as a bright summer day. When the outdoors is one of the few things that’s still safe to enjoy, it’s a welcome inspiration. I don’t have a favorite Houbigant Paris perfume. Maybe it could be this one. I live in the USA.

  • Roberta O says:

“These moments of initial delicate pink and bright yellow floral tenderness and brightness with just a suggestion of fruitiness, are enhanced with honeyed layers that gradually give more depth to this composition. ” In the heat of summer I’m finding myself drawn more and more to yellow florals. They keep me feeling energized and positive when all I want to do is sit in a dark room in front of the fan. This composition sounds devine and I would love to take a sniff. I live in the U.S.

  • I love all these recent fragrance reviews that seem to evoke sunshine and include mimosa as a note. I also enjoyed the five F’s reference too! I’ve never tried anything from the house before, but there have been a few releases that sound beautiful. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • LORI LAWS says:

Great review by Elena! I really enjoyed her description. This fragrance sounds very elegant and sophisticated. My favorite part is: “La Belle Saison begins with brighter colors and sunnier days, adding that little extra spring to your step due to nicer weather and the first flowers blooming! The fragile elegance of spring and the sensual opulence of summer are best felt after periods of soft rain falling.” My favorites by Houbigant are: Apercu, Essence Rare, and Quelques Fleurs Royale. Thanks so much for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!
