Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi review

“My perfumes have never been about a quest for the most beautiful scent,
but always for the most beautiful emotion.”

One of the pioneer houses of niche perfumery, Histoires de Parfums was founded 22 years ago by Gerald Ghislain. The “stories to be read on your skin” are a veritable olfactive library that has been enchanting us, through the years, with its interpretation of famous characters, mythical years, poems, music, and raw materials.

Today it’s the turn of incense to wear the crown and be king with the soon to be released Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi composed by young perfumer Celine Pedriel. Not coincidentally, an entirely new brand, called Olibanum was launched this year by Gérald Ghislain, in order to celebrate his favourite material (read more about it in Emmanuelle Varron’s Esxence 2022  Event Report here.)

In an imaginary future, span forward in time, when humanity would wake up from its cryosleep on its new Earth, what music would we have chosen they be played when we wake up? What episodes of our bloodied history, what lessons, what fragments of our glory and magnificence would we use to jog back our collective memory? What colors, from our millennia of art, would we pick to color our blood back to red? How would we remember how to be human? Where would the essence lie?

I don’t know, and the more the years pass by, the more I find new and contradicting answers to this mental exercise. But one answer never changes, no matter what. What would our awakening smell like? What ELSE but incense?

If one could choose one substance to play as scented background to the unwinding of history, for sure this would be it. From ancient Babylon where it burned in the altars for the feast of Bel to Nero’s excesses and the Roman victory parades, the gods changed their faces, their names, and their habits. But our thirst for incense never grew dimmer.

A note from the brand  Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi is a tribute to the resin of resins. From the spice-filled shores of ancient India to the sumptuous, smoke-filled naves of Gothic basilicas; from the coronation of Babylonian kings to the birth of Christ; from the summits of the Omani Hojar to the desert plains of Somalia; from Cleopatra to Alexander, from Ulysses to Salome, from the pharaohs to the centuries awaiting to be fulfilled, Frankincense is the crossroads of peoples, the junction of civilisations that time and language and war have long kept apart.”

AI-generated image of incense smoke inside a cathedral, made using Midjourney

This summer was amazing for those of us fascinated with AI-generated art. With Midjourney and DALL-E2 opening up for more and more testers, I must admit, that after countless hours of digging and refining the right keywords – most of my thought process, even in the so-called “real life” was filtered through prompts. So, Encens Roi, if I were to sum it up in one sentence, would be: “/imagine: cold pillars of smoke, gothic cathedral, desert setting, cinematic details/

Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi is a beautiful and complex incense fragrance that takes you on a journey. We begin with the smoky incense one would find inside a cathedral, with intricate details that paint the cool-toned, cool facets of incense: thick blue smoke, the deep green bitter nuances of wet stone walls, covered in vegetation that is accustomed only to shade, the wet woods of ancient furniture, left outside for one rain too many.  It’s solemn, contemplative, cold, and introspective and you would be tricked to think you are in the presence of another take on the cold-incense- Comme des Garcons Avignon-theme. But wait, there’s more!

AI generated image made using Midjourney

Coming out of the cathedral, we find ourselves midsummer, midday, blinded by the orange rays of the sun, warming us, as we head for the exit through the gardens. Slightly sweet ripe fruit whispers carry us to the exit, with the smell of the desert becoming denser and getting hotter by the second.  Resin oils, sweet and thick, balsams, and spicy hot smoke carry us unto the next chapters of our journey, further into the promise of the 1001 Arabian Nights. The growl of the oud, present, but centerstage in the field of view never lets us forget the path we are on now, with another slightly sweet creamy undercurrent weaved around it, that acts as a reassuring guide. A white cacao accord, far from its cacao chocolatey gourmand alter-ego, acts as a buttery sweet counterpart to the oud and incense.

Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi is the fragrant embodiment of having two scented smoke serpents, dancing entwined around your skin: a blue, cold one that will tell you to pick the introspective path for finding your answers, and the hot, fiery one that will always say that our senses prevail. So yes, in short, I might have just found the incense that speaks of our humanity, in all its contradicting forms.

Notes: Top: Olibanum CO2*, Roman Chamomile, Schinus Molle

Heart: Saffron, Pimento Berry CO2*, Atlas Cedarwood

Base: White cacao, Agarwood (Oud), Cistus, Vanilla

*Note from the brand: Supercritical CO2 extraction entails treating a natural aromatic raw material with CO2 in the supercritical state. In this state, CO2 has the viscosity of a gas and the density of a liquid, which makes it an effective solvent. This method does not produce greenhouse gas or pollutants.

  • In the review, I love the contrast of a cool, dark interior with a hot, bright desert outside. The listed notes of the perfume also sound lovely.

  • A new release from Histoires de Parfums is always exciting. Encens Roi pays tribute to incense and I agree that incense has such a historical importance that it has been a beloved scent in almost every era. The review also reminds us that it will appeal to the fans Avignon who want something more. I am in US. My fav from Histoires de Parfums is 1725.

  • I love incense and I have noticed many are either fire or smoky but don’t have a dual nature. Midjourney is really something I need to explore. Great review. I can’t wait to buy a bottle of Encens Roi.

  • The unique notes and how how beautifully the notes are blended into this one of a kind fragrance really sparks my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Since I am fascinated by incense, in all its incarnations, I found Nicoleta’s review of Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi quite enjoyable to read. The contrast between the cold and hot, the yin and the yang of this perfume, is captured very well in her description, and the AI-generated pictures are perfect. I especially liked her imagery of waking up from our cryo-sleep many years into the future, and encountering the very first smell, and of course it would be incense. The blue walls in the cathedral pictures create the impression of us being in our long cryo-sleep, then being awakened by white/silver swirls of gentle, warm, incense wafting in the air.

The listed notes in Histoires de Parfums Encens Roi are lovely, especially oud in base (Notes: Top: Olibanum CO2*, Roman Chamomile, Schinus Molle; Heart: Saffron, Pimento Berry CO2*, Atlas Cedarwood; Base: White cacao, Agarwood (Oud), Cistus, Vanilla).

I have not tried this brand, but would love to try it some day, along with Olibanum, the other brand Gerald Ghislain has created. Thanks for the draw and a lovely review. From USA.

  • I’m so glad I read this review. Loved it from top to bottom. As someone who works in AI I’m very thrilled to see AI generated images here which are so perfectly describing this review. I also know that it is not that easy to find a good set of keywords to generate something really cool, so I applaud Nicoleta for her images. I’ve tried a lot of fragrances from this brand but none of them have clicked with me enough to get a full bottle, although I’ve liked quite a few. I am a huge fan of incense fragrances so Encens Roi is a must try for me. I’m particularly intrigued to smell the combination of olibanum and white cacao, camomile and vanilla. This is not a combination I’ve seen so far. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Striking description, striking visuals ! As a lover of all things incense can’t wait to get my nose on this one

Thanks for the draw. Based in the EU

  • Fascinating review, the image of the two smoke serpents enveloping you in a dance of complementary opposites is very evocative. Lots has been said about incense and lots will continue to be said, I agree with Nicoleta, humanity could never part from this amazing scent and the heavens it suggests us. I live in Italy, EU

  • It is true and fascinating that incense is used in worship over different cultures and through the years. I am intrigued by the use of the cold and warm aspects of incense and resins, and would live to experience. The AI art is awesome, too!

I loved philosophical aspects of the story that Nicoleta created. And of course the listed notes of the perfume sound intriguing. Would love to win a sample. EU

  • The mention of cold incense notes, fruit and white cacao in the base, is what most intrigues me. I’m in the EU.

  • Goodness – sounds transcendental! Olibanum is my favourite material of all time too. Pretty much everything about this fires my interest, but the mention of a white cacao note (something I’ve never smelled before) is the final touch – this has to be tried. live in the UK.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Nicoleta. Absolutely fascinated with incense fragrances and this one totally fits the bill. I love the concept of this being an awakening fragrance – I am imagining images from Dune, Mad Max, Lord of the Rings and churches.

I am a big fan of incense so I am extremely curious about Incense Roi after reading Nicoleta’s review! The contrast between cold and hot really intrigues me: the choice between mind/introspection and senses/letting go is definitely what sparkled my interest! Greetings from Italy

  • Nicoleta! ❤️❤️❤️ This scent sounds heavenly! I’m new to incense fragrances, but my love is genuine. ❤️ What a special treat to be able to experience a fragrance early! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! USA

  • What sparks my interest is the CO2 process. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like that and would be interested to get my nose on something like that. I’m in the USA

  • Gorgeous photography!!! I got into incense more during covid. Avignon, but yet there is MORE. I love a fragrant journey. The white cocoa is intriguing. My favorite of the line is Moulin Rouge. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What sparks my interest from Nicoleta’s reviee is that this fragramce is non-linear, going through transitions. Also, it adds the sweetness to the incense, which makes it more appealing. Too bad they’re only giving 2ml.

Nicoleta’s review made me think about my love of incense and cathedrals, the peace and strength I gather when I enter and take in all the smells. I light incense every day to make my day an occasion. I love Histoires de Parfums, especially the naughty one, 1740 Marquis de Sade.
    I live in the USA.

  • I really loved the image of oud guiding the path, and the point made that frankincense is a crossroad for so many peoples. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • I love this review from beginning to the end! Nicoleta has a unique style of transcending the fragrance to different dimensions.
The visuals are extraordinary! The mind game is so intriguing and I will keep it in mind 🙂 The fact that Encens Roi is the smell that would remind us to be human and it would access our common memories, makes it a very dear fragrance.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve been very interested to try at least a few fragrances from this company, but I haven’t had a good enough opportunity yet. Incense is one of my favorite notes/ingredients in perfumery and I love the smell of church incense. I’m interested to experience the ingredients which are a CO2 supercritical extraction. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I really like the opening quote from Gérald Ghislain—there’s great beauty in the feel, impact, and resonance of a perfume, versus simply smelling good. And that framework leaves a lot of room to work with frankincense, the “resin of resins.” Speaking to Encens Roi, I’m really intrigued by how this perfume pairs a cold, smoky incense with ripe fruit and white cocao; that juxtaposition seems very unusual and inspired. Thank you for the interesting review, Nicoleta.

Also, very cool AI-generated images. They were an inspired addition.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.
