Autumn is upon us and what is better suited for sweater weather than an amber fragrance?

Gerald Ghislain of Histoires de parfums de Parfums

Gerald Ghislain in 2010

I have known Gerald Ghislain, the founder and Creative Director of Histoires de Parfums, since he launched his first perfume line at the  emporium of niche and indie perfumery Takashimiya in New York City in 2008. He told me that “Creating an amber fragrance that’s suitable for both genders has always been a challenge“. Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114,  from his Cult Book” collection is a reference amber perfume. It is sweet, spicy and savory, earthy, resinous and balsamic as would befit someone like Gerald Ghislain who has an extensive culinary background.  Can one Amber perfume be all things to everyone? Ambre 114 just might. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

  • Fall is definitely amber season. I liked that Sebastian described this as warm and spicy, with a nutty twist. The notes of thyme and geranium are calling my name. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • Fabian Medina says:

I love Sebastians reviews. Good honest reviews plus detailed. My current favorite is This is not a blue bottle 1.1.

  • Sounds delicious..my name is Markus and I’m from St Louis, MO, USA…I would love to be entered for a chance to win this bottle of amber parfum, Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. Christian Dior’s Ambre Nuit has been my most favorite for over 5 years now, and I’m looking to explore deeper, sweeter, and yet bolder amber parfums with spicy and nutty notes as described. Can’t wait for this new olfactory journey I’m about to embark on with this fragrance. Thanks!

  • Interesting set of notes to go with the amber. The rose and vanilla are two notes I look forward to seeing how they are blended. No favorite from the house. US

  • I’d love to win this bottle ! I’m a huge fan of the channel but short on cash so this would be my first niche fragrance !

  • Shamrock1313 says:

    Haven’t tried this house.
Sabastian’s breakdown is spectacular and the amber/spicy vibe sounds perfect for the cooler weather.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • I really love Sebastian’s reviews. You make us imagine the experience of this scent ( Histoires de Perfume Amber 114) right along with you. Would LOVE to have a bottle of this gorgeous scent all to myself.

  • I enjoyed the concise description that Sebastian provided in his review. I enjoy spicy amber scents, and this one sounds amazing. 1740 is my favorite from this house. Cheers from Oregon USA!

  • I enjoyed learning about this amber fragrance suitable for both men and women, both sweet and salty. I don’t know the fragrances from this line but would love to try them. I live in the USA.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

I enjoyed Sebastian’s enthusiasm this time. He loves amber, resinous fragrances and uses of culinary like spices and textures ! He is fascinating and encourages me to try more fragrances ! I fell in love , when i tried Histoires de Parfums En Aparte | Irreverent Eau de Parfum and it has to be my favorite ! USA

I always love Sebastian’s reviews. He’s so throughout and describes scent so eloquently. I think my favorite from the house would be Tubereuse 3 Animale. Thank you for the giveaway and review. California, USA

  • Gligor Taseski says:

The notes are pretty interesting all listed notes are to my taste.
I liked the these spicy notes mixed with amber, tonka, vanilla. This must be warm and spice masterpiece.
I’ll get a sample for sure

  • Love Sebastian’s reviews. He’s so specific on the notes and how they present themselves in a fragrance. I love Amber and Patchouli. From the house, Patchouli Noir. USA

  • Donovan Esquibel says:

In Sebastian’s video I liked how he mentioned the complimenting vanilla to the Amber and how it really rounds the smell out. He is completely right and it is one of my favorite base note combinations. Would love to get my hands on a bottle but don’t have the funds so wishing to win this giveaway

  • wallygator88 says:

I’ve heard a lot about Histoires de Parfums. I loved the way Sebastien described this as a balsamic, resinuous and aromatic with a green and spicy top.

Haven’t had a chance to spell one of their perfumes before.

    Love from Madison, WI.

  • I love how Sebastian refered to this fragrance as the perfect amber fragrance! The opening of the fragrance as kind of green melds into a tonka bean laced vanillic amber. Sebastian is right the tonka beans are a nice touch to this sweater weather fragrance, that I would love to try! I live in the USA

  • citizenkage says:

Wow!! A top 5 amber fragrance for Sebastian. That says alot. This sounds fantastic and perfect for the upcoming season changes. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying this house unfortunately so I can’t pick a favorite. But would love to try this one. Thanks for the opportunity. USA.

  • I love dry Amber fragrances- this one and Ambre Sultan are two of my favorites. Sebastian mentions the drydown being sweetened with vanilla as gooey- agree 100%.

My favorite from the house is 1740

  • Michael Nevis says:

My favorite thing about Sebastian’s review is that of the amber itself. It really helps to know what kind if amber you are getting.

  • Gabriel Leyva Garcia says:

    Great review spotlight Sebastian.
Notes sound great, specially designed for the fall, I can smell it from here, amber is one of my top favorites notes.
    Las Vegas NV

  • I love how Sebastian breaks down the components of the perfume. I’m impressed that he considers it the perfect amber and rates it so highly. Fall is the season for a nutty, spicy amber and the herbal twist sounds compelling. I’ve tried 1969 turns 50 from HdP. Thanks for the draw! I live in the US

  • Just like Sebastian, I’m a patchouli lover and if he loves patchouli from Histoires De Parfums, the odds are I’ll love it too. USA.

  • What a wonderful review from Sebastian as always. Sebastian helps to understand the construction of the fragrance. Amber 411 sounds great for Fall. Thanks for the informative review and the most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • monihern2002 says:

I love how informative Sebastian is. Amber is my favorite note in fragrance. I love Hemingway and Fidel from this line.

  • I love the review. Sebastian does a great job with descriptions of fragrances. He mentions the notes And I think Amber and Rose combined sounds so beautiful. I’ve never tried this fragrance but I have tried Nior Patchouli and 1969. I’ve heard Amber 411 is a really great fragrance and very popular. I would be so excited to participate in the giveaway. With all my love from Florida, USA ❤️

  • He keeps mentioning warm, spicy and rosy. I love all of those. I don’t find this so dry or aromatic, but I did try it and felt that it was one of my least favorite HdP; it started out a nice amber in the top but with too much citrus and Play Doh. Then it becomes a bit of a nonfloral copy of Shalimar. What I did admire is that it is the strongest of theirs so far and not the powdery like most of the rest of the house. I would like to revisit it because I smelled a sample years ago. I love amber. I like most of what this house offers but don’t LOVE any of them. I’m in USA.

  • I really liked how Sebastian mentioned this having many different facets being aromatic, and balsamic, and rosey and vanilla. Also he spoke about it being different due to the prominence of the rose note which sounds great. I havent tried any from the house but 1899 Hemingway is 1 I’d like to try as well as Ambre 114. In the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s dependable reviews. Still searching for a solid amber that doesn’t lean to masculine. It os hard to pick a favourite from HdeP but i love the Tubereuse Series. Thank you

  • I love Histoire des Parfums; would love to have an Amber from this brilliant nose to share with my son as he also loves the house. Sebastian makes everything sound delicious, and this one sounds perfect for the upcoming cold weather. I live in the USA.

  • I liked the fact that this was described as having a nice rose element, which I find intriguing.

1725 is my favorite thus far, as it has an amber basenote.

  • Top five best amber I think I want to try Ambre 114. I have , 1969 and 1899 Hemingway both are excellent. I agree it’s an underrated house. I had no idea that Gerald was in culinary business or that he launched in 2008 in Nyc
    I live in the USA

  • Surprised he had yet to do a full review of HDPs Amber 114. It is also one of my favorite Amber fragrances. I fell in love with it when I took a quick wiff of the cap and thought it smelled amazing, but surprised that it smelled different on my skin. Still love it and greatly prefer it to other Amber fragrances others always mention like Ambre Sultan which I am not a fan of. Reason I brought up the smell I got from the cap was that I eventually found another fragrance that resonated an almost identical scent on my skin. That being Chanel’s Coromandel which is my all-time favorite. Do not know if this is just me, but this was just something I noticed

  • Bryant Worley says:

I…want…..this…AMBER! Having said that, I really enjoyed Sebastian’s infectious enthusiasm while explaining this fragrance. I really appreciated it when he said the amber would become gooey, sticky. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

Sebastian says Ambre 114 is a spicy amber that has other warm notes like vanilla. My fav. from HdP is 1725. I am in US

  • I am always in awe of Sebastian awesome reviews of fragrances as he describes this as a masterfully crafted Amber. Warm spicy and nutty. I love ambers and would love to win and wear this fragrance religiously. Thanks for such an amazing draw. I live in CA, USA.

  • I love how Sebastian describes Ambre 114, the dry amber that turns into a more goo like. I only have about 4 maybe 5 loves when it comes to fragrances I’ve tried and this is one of them. Santal noir, bracken man, Herod, ambre 114 and I really really like el born (bordering love).

  • It was a good review by Sebastian. I love Amber fragrances generally n I have a couple from Prada n Hermes. I do also have 1872 from this house n I do enjoy it n hopefully I can win the giveaway to get my hands on this one.
    I’m here in Florida.
    Thanks again guys.

  • Lara Anderson says:

Have had a decant of Ambre 114 for quite awhile and while it’s seemed ok, I never put it above average. This review may change that for me. Maybe I just needed to take more time with it and give it more of a chance. Thanks Sebastian for enticing me to re-experience it and the possibility of a full bottle would be fantastic. There’s nothing like a full bottle to get the true experience of a fragrance. Decants are nice but simply not enough. Appreciate your give-aways here and what a lovely site!

  • Xavier Reynolds says:

I really enjoyed Sebastian’s review of this fragrance, like all of his other reviews. I would love to win a full bottle of Ambre 114. Loved how he played out the different notes of the composition.

  • Brian Taylor says:

Sebastian always does such a great job describing the experience you get with said fragrances. Histories de Parfums Amber sounds very nice. Would love to win one!

  • This is definitely one I want to try. I have learned so much from watching Sebastian over the years, and because of him, I have branched out beyond my Le Labo Rose 31. I wore only this for over 10 years and didn’t even realize how much I would love so many other fragrances. Lately, spicy, sweet resinous have been at the top of my list with the fall weather. Thank you Sebastian!

  • I really loved Sebastian’s description of the dry down of Ambre 114. Usually fragrances are strongest upon application and then into the development of the heart. Here however it sounds like a different sort of progression, where the foundational aspects of the perfume are the main stars. This decadent, resinous, vanillic finale is what Sebastian describes so well and thus Ambre 114 has really piqued my curiosity. I have not yet tried any fragrances from the house of Histoires de Parfums. Thanks so much for great review Sebastian and for the chance to win! I’m in Oregon, US.

  • drsuzannesharief says:

I love amber, I’m in a quest of finding the best warm unisex amber. If Sebastian thinks it’s a master piece and a must have for amber lovers then i 100% agree. Love to win this. From the US

  • patrick_348 says:

I very much liked Sebastian’s description of the progression of the fragrance from top to heart to base. He made it simple enough to understand and complex enough to be interesting. I don’t know HIstoires de Parfums fragrances, but this sounds well worth trying. In the US.

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always high quality. I appreciate the depth of information he presents. I do not yet have a favorite Histoires de Parfums perfume. USA

  • Sebastian says this is one of the best amber fragrances and I believe him after watching the review. It’s a Spicy oriental fragrance and very warm. An oriental with some spice to it.
I do not have any favorite Histoires de Parfums perfume.

  • Interesting transition this beauty has. From aromatic and green, to gooey vanilla and classy patchouli. Rose and nutmeg undertones are highly appreciated.
I have no experience with Histories de Parfums.
Thank you all for the chance.
    USA

  • Watching Sebastian reviews is always bad for my wallet. Bought over 20 fragrances because of him.
Multifaceted fragrances I appreciate a lot. Balsamic, vanillic and savory is a classic recipe for success, especially when the weather is already horrible as it is.
1969 Parfum de Revolte is part of my collection. After short research I saw it shares a few notes with Ambre 114 , and both are created by Gerald Ghislain. I’ll check Histories de Parfums on social media.
    Thanks a lot. USA

  • I’ve mentioned it already, but as a Pastry Chef I relate all fragrances to some kind of food, being cakes and desserts , or savory dishes.
Sebastian review reminded me of the the Nutmeg Cake with butter I do once a week . Instead of the traditional two teaspoons of ground nutmeg, I do 3 and instead of sugar I do cane molasses. It not only tastes , but also smells great – spicy, sweet and balsamic , exactly how I imagine Ambre 114 to smell.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.

  • Michael Prince says:

Sebastian, great review of Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. Sebastian classifies this as a top 5 Amber fragrance for him so you know its good. Its a sweet, spicy, resinous, balsalmic, savory, and earthy amber. This may be my favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance based on Sebastian’s review. I am from the USA.

  • wildevoodoo says:

I’ve been wanting to try Ambre 114 forever, I’m so glad Sebastian reviewed it! He’s right, it really does sound like everything I want in an amber! I love that it seems to encompass so many positive qualities (warm, spicy, vanillic, aromatic) without ever clashing or feeling overwhelming- and the gooey/molasses progression of the rose note sounds so intriguing as well.
My favorite HdP fragrance is Noir Patchouli, so I’m glad to hear Sebastian is also a fan of it. I am in the US 🙂

  • To me, Sebastian is the most professional and dedicated fragrance on YouTube. So, when he says this is “a dream come true type of amber” and a “top 5 amber” fragrance, subscribers like myself listen. That plus rose, vanilla and “toasty nutty tonka bean”…I’m sold. Thank you CaFleureBon and Sebastian for introducing me to this brand. Best from Boston, USA.

  • This particular scent sounds so sweet and scrumptious. I have always heard of the challenges in creating a great amber fragrance and would be thrilled to try this one due to Sebastian rating it so highly. I have never smelled any of this brand’s scents. Commenting from FL, USA.

  • I very much enjoyed Sebastian’s review. He breaks down the smell and all of its notes in such an organized and easy to understand way, and makes it sound so appealing. My favorite Histories de Parfum fragrance from the handful I’ve tried would have to be 1725 Casanova. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the USA.

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always superb, and his high praise of this fragrance makes it all the more appealing. I’m a fan of the house’s 1890, and would love to try this. I’m in the US.

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews. I am intrigued by the combination of notes in this one and would love to try a sample/bottle of this one. So far, my favorite from this house is 1725. I’m in the USA

  • I always appreciate Sebastian’s reviews as they are very detailed with great note breakdowns and you can always tell he knows and loves his fragrances and this one was no different. He quickly became one of my favorite fragrance reviewers. I was wowed by Tom Ford’s Amber Absolute and would love to try Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. My favorite from this house would be 1725 Casanova. Thank you for the kind giveaway. I’m in USA

  • doveskylark says:

I have tried a sample of Ambre 114 and I agree with Sebastian about the spicy warm notes. This surely must be one of the best amber fragrances on the market. It has so much depth and so many textures. I love when the rose pops out.
My favorite from this house is 1740 Marquis de Sade.
    I live in the USA.

  • “Creating an amber fragrance that’s suitable for both genders has always been a challenge“.
In 2008 maybe , not in 2019 . To me what’s feminine, masculine or unisex fragrance is a matter of perception, and not a written rule.
Classy ambers I usually wear when I go out to more high end bars , clubs , jazz concerts and so on .
Ambre 114 I’ll gladly wear on those occasions.
Noir Patchouli Is my favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance.
    Already follow on @cafleurebon , @lookfeelsmellgreat , @official_europerfumes and @histoiresdeparfums on Instagram.
Top draw , thank you. USA

  • Thanks Sebastian. Another great review. If it’s got everything you want, like he says, then I’m game. I’ve never tried this brand, but this amber has been on my radar. Ambre Sultan is a fav. I’d love to win this generous giveaway.

  • I always like Sebastians reviews. Like Histoires de Parfums, he does a lot of niche houses while many reviewers on youtube stick to common household names for hits. I like how he describes what could sound like a straight forward vanilla amber scent and makes it sound more aramatic and spicy which adds to my desire to try it. The fact that he calls it a top 5 amber, with his experience, carries a lot of weight. I am a subscriber to his youtube channel and live in the US. Thank you.
    GS

  • Thanks for another great review, Sebastian! I’m looking forward to trying this scent – rose, vanilla, sweet and salty. Sounds simple and complex at the same time. My favorite from this house is Histoires Parfums 1804. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • I like how thorough he is in describing exactly what to expect with this fragrance. Amber, rosey, dry – sounds like a great fall scent. I would love to try this, not familiar with the house but it sounds really good. Thanks for the giveaway! USA

  • ”One of the best ambers out there”
That’s a …. of a bold statement, even for Sebastian. The transition from the start to the base sounds wonderful , and Michelyn words of it sweet, spicy, savory and balsamic nailed it. I have to try it.
Received Parfum de Revolte from my brother for my last birthday, beautiful peaches and chocolate combination, with patchouli and rum .
Thank you for the review, and the giveaway. In USA

  • How terribly convenient; I’ve just run out of my sample of Ambre 114! I agree about this fragrance being dry, and the base notes being incredible! It was interesting you mentioned the rosy notes. I don’t remember the rose, and will have to sniff more discerningly next time! Though Ambre 114 is a close runner-up, I think my favorite Histoires de Parfums is 1969 — luscious, chocolaty peach patchouli goodness, simply to die for! USA

  • m.r.everything says:

Sebastian had me right from the start! He said one of the best amber’s on the market happens to be the one he is reviewing today… I have a sample of this, actually I am working on my third sample of this! I love Ambre 114 so much that this will be a full bottle purchase for sure. It reminds me of another amber that I really enjoy…. Ambre Precieux by Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier! They are both gorgeous. Histoires de Parfum has really impressed me. I have a sample set and love every one of them, even all of the feminine ones. My favorite from the house would honestly have to be a tie between Ambre 114 and This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.2. I love the bright rose in the latter and it is on my mind all the time. I have several samples of that one and I have had two 15mL bottles already…. time for a 120mL! This was a great review, as usual, Sebastian, and I definitely agree with you that this is one of the best ambers on the market! Thank you for the great review and thank you to team CaFleureBon for this generous opportunity! This review could not have come at a better time of year! I hope you all have a great day! I live in Delaware, US.

  • IvanVelikov says:

I know Histoires de Parfums because of 1725 , one of the most unusual Fougeres in my possession. It’s hard to describe , half classic old school aromatic fougere , half gourmand. It’s sweet,  but lavender and anise balancing the vanilla,  almond and cinnamon well.
Ambre 114 I have not smelled,  but again there’s a complex scent with different layers,  sweet,  spicy and balsamic one.
Wonderful opportunity , and again great job by Sebastian, for him that’s normal.
    USA

  • Amber can be tricky on my skin. Some have a weird, sour note and others are beautiful and smooth. SL Ambre Sultan works great with my skin chemistry, but Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea turns to an almost vinegar scent. Great review by Sebastian, no matter what he reviews. I have, own a bottle of 1899 Hemingway by Histoires de Parfums, and love it. Thank you for the draw! NY, USA.

  • Excellent review by Sebastian and I loved that he said this is a very warm a, spicy, and aromatic! I love amber scents and Sebastian said that the dry down is very nice. Definitely sounds like the perfect fall fragrance. The only one that I have tried from this brand is the Mata Hari and I love it. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Shannon Gaines says:

I like how Simon describes the amber-y spiciness of this fragrance. I have tried this fragrance. I got a sample kit from their line. This was my second favorite. My most favorite is 1804 in all it’s pineapple-y goodness. My least favorite part of the house…their naming scheme. Except for a select few fragrances (like Ambre 114), the names are years. I had trouble memorizing years in school, and now they want me to do it for their fragrance line??? I wish they had the year…followed by another name so they could be easier to remember. Truthfully, all the years bleed together so I rarely can remember which of their fragrances I have tried because I can’t recall which year it was…frustrating!

  • I just started watching Sabastian’s reviews and I love that they are detailed while still being very approachable. He really does an excellent job in nailing the overall impressions of a fragrance without having to resort to a perfume note review. His descriptors seem to match what goes through my head when smelling a fragance. In reviewing Ambre 114, I like that he distinguishes between a jammy rose and a more gooey or molasses-y rose. This has been high to my list for a while but I was sidetracked by Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens and Ambre Precieux by MPG.

  • I love this whole line and as usual, Sebastian gives a concise picture of what to expect. Amber is my favorite winter note so I would love to win this. I already own Casanova, 1969 and 1884. I am in the USA

  • Amber fragrances go well with the cooler days. Fall is a nice time to wear them. Haven’t tried too many from Histoires de Parfums. 114 sounds nice. A few other Amber fragrances I like are Amber Absolutely and Grand Soir. Enjoyed Sebastian’s review. Thanks for the draw, Ca
