Hiram Green Shangri La 2022 (Hiram Green)+ Paradise Regained Giveaway

Hiram Green Shangri La by natural perfumer Hiram Green

“If we have not found the heaven within, we have not found the heaven without.” ~ James Hilton, Lost Horizon

Award-winning natural perfumer Hiram Green continues his fascination with myth (his last release, Arcadia – hearkened back to an idyllic, legendary paradise) as he revisits his exquisite 2014 creation Shangri La, inspired by James Hilton’s hidden Himalayan paradise in the novel Lost Horizon. Hiram has tweaked this fragrance by rendering it more light-filled, warmly-spiced and floral – and his 2022 iteration remains faithful to the lushness of its forebear. Hiram Green Shangri La is one of those timeless illuminated chypres which resemble Shakespeare’s Cleopatra: “Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.”

Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon takes place during the era of the British Raj. A group of four residents (a British consul named Conway, his vice-consul, an American and a British missionary) are on a plane intended for Peshawar which is high-jacked to Tibet instead. The plane goes down and its navigator dies; the survivors find themselves stranded in terra incognita in the Himalayas. They are led to a lamasery in Shangri La by a local English-speaking postulant: a community in which no one appears to age, led by a High Lama who is thought to be 250 years old. As long as one dwells in the valley, they appear untouched by the passage of time; once they depart, their subsequent aging occurs demonstrably rapidly. The High Lama (who is dying) recognizes a potential spiritual successor in Conway and offers him his position. Two of the four decide to remain in the valley (the American is wanted for stock fraud and must avoid prosecution; the missionary intends to convert Shangri La’s community to Christianity), while the vice-consul convinces his colleague to return home. It is never revealed what happened to Conway – but there exists a widely held belief that he returned to the valley to assume the role of High Lama – in search of paradise regained.

Hiram Green Shangri La by Hiram Green

Hiram Green Shangri La is indeed an olfactory paradise worthy of an epic novel or film. Its peachy, chalorous spice is brightened by tart and tonic true citrus top notes, redolent on a certain plane with Edmond Roudnitska’s breathtaking Femme de Rochas. Shangri La’s heart bears similarity in its choice florals as well: rose, orris and jasmine. I smell cinnamon, clove, nutmeg; if there is any cumin, it must be minute. This simmering of fruit, flower and spice spins a luxurious, enveloping glamour*. Hiram has employed as much oakmoss in this formula as is permitted by IFRA standards, and it sings lyrically in concert with a lightly smoky balsamic vetiver in the base. Shangri La, for all its classicism – never assumes a dated stance; it’s fresh, current and comforting as your favorite cashmere. I can’t resist its opulent warmth, wonderful in all seasons but particularly poignant as the temperatures plummet. It’s a veritable Valley of Flowers forever blossoming in the Himalayas. Notes: Lemon, orange, bergamot, peach, jasmine, rose, orris, cinnamon, warm spices, vetiver, oakmoss

* N.B. – Glamour (utilized here) refers to the archaic Scots word derived from gramarye: magic, enchantment, spell.

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • Chypre to me is the apex of the art of perfumery and Rochas Femme is my favorite in the genre. Ida comparing Shangri La to Femme has me extremely intrigued in getting my nose on this! I own and love Moon Bloom by Hiram green and have been really impressed with all I’ve tried from his brand. From USA

  • Kr1ms0nk1ng says:

Roudnitska’s genius was not only showcased in Le Parfum de Therese for his doting wife, but more accessibly in Femme de Rochas. Ida’s reference to these fruity chypres in tandem with Hiram’s heavy hand with oakmoss certainly enticed me.

Genuine fan of the brand with Arcadia reminding me of the Silver Firs of the lands surrounding Mt. Saint Helen, and Vetiver striking a clear similarity in genius and quality to Route de Vetiver (Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier) and Heeley’s Vetiver Veritas.

    California based. Appreciate the opportunity.

  • Jenny Ellis Rickhuss says:

The inspiration behind Arcadia is as captivating as the scents description. The sense of an idyllic natural forest expressed through fragrance sounds beautiful. I have yet to try the whole line of Hiram Green fragrances, but from what I have put my nose on so far I am truly in awe of the beauty, artistry, and quality exemplified by this perfumer. I live in TX, USA

  • I’m so glad Hiram Green is bringing this back. Shangri-La the fragrance was almost as elusive and mysterious as Shangri-La in Hilton’s story; so many raving reviews but very difficult to get your nose on.
I really enjoyed Ida’s review of it. I’m a great chypre fan and love a good dose of Oakmoss in my fragrances. I really hope to try this fragrance. Marit, the Netherlands

  • Ahh! Femme by Rochas, my favorite vintage scent from years ago. All feminine wiles and wishes, rosy, fruity, spicy, good enough to eat. Vintage was best. I have not experienced Hiram Green fragrances before, but this is one I would want unsniffed. Thank you Ida for a chance to possess this. I’m in Arizona, US.

  • Wonderful review from Ida… Really nice to know something more about the inspiration and the story behind.
Tried a lot of Hiram perfumes: Arcadia, hyde, moon bloom, slow dive and arbolé.
    My favourite is Arcadia!
Would love to try shangri la!

  • First let me say I am so excited that Shangri La has returned! Hiram Green is one of my favorite perfumers that I have discovered since beginning my perfume journey; The first iteration of Shangri La had already come and gone though by the time I was aware of who he was. I own bottles of Moon Bloom and Slowdive, the latter being my most reached for bottle. I also have samples of Hyde, Vivacious, and Arcadia. I’m excited to now go back and smell Arcadia after reading Ida’s review. Reading it conjured memories of the forest experienced as a child for me, the way the sun touched everything, its warmth dancing with the magic of sunbeams and the smells of a green living heat that seemed to come from everywhere. I’m excited to put my wrist to my nose while wearing it and think of that sense memory. I live is Missouri, USA

  • Shangri La, Valley of Flowers in the Himalayas, what is not to like in Hiram Green Shangri La. From Ida’s description of Shangri La, I am hoping Hiram Green Shangri La also has some elixir of like type elixir of life type qualities. Haven’t tried this brand, yet. Hiram Green Shangri La seems lovely indeed with classic notes blended by a talented perfumer. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I always thought Shangri La is a real place in South East Asia and didn’t know it is fictional. I did hear the name growing up. The original Hiram Green Shangri La indeed reminds one of classics like ROchas Femme and this re-introduction appears faithful to original Hiram Green Shangri La version. I am in US.

  • Well who doesn’t like an epic novel (or film) and an epic scent? Especially in the cooler months? Anything spicy is appropriate. And beautiful. Like the Himalayas themselves.

    In maryland.

  • The fascinating and beautiful notes
of this fragrance appeal to me. I also love the bottle design. I never tried any Hiram Green fragrances. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This sounds really dreamy. I would love to be won over on a perfume with peach in it. I have yet to be in love with a peach perfume. I have not smelled any of Hiram’s perfumes before. I live in Indiana

  • Slow Dive is the only scent i have tried from HG. I do love Chypres and any reference to Roudniska gets my attention. Very curious about the peach note in this composition

  • What appeals to me is the base of Oakmoss and Vetiver and that he used the most he could of Oakmoss. I have never tried any of his scents and hope to be the lucky winner. I live in Buellton, CA, USA

  • Intrigued by Ida’s description of fruit, flower and spice… Along with the heightened oakmoss. Have sampled other Hiram Green scents in the past and always been awed. In the US.

  • I love chypres and I love peach in fragrances so this sounds like a really good one and I am glad it uses as much oakmoss as it can. I have only tried Slowdive and Vetiver but eager to try more. Thanks for the draw and I live in VA, USA.

  • Wow, this sounds gorgeous. I love a well deployed peach note, and I love a chypre structure. I appreciate Ida’s use of the word ‘glamour’, too–so apt for certain perfumes!
Many thanks for the review and giveaway. I’m in the US.

  • Oh yes, I’m definitely a fan. Slowdive is my favorite. I’m drawn to the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg notes, which sound perfect for fall. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • I’ve read great things over time about this wonderful composition, and Ida’s review really dots the ‘i’ with her exquisite wordsmithing here. Really eager to getting my nose on this now !

Thanks for the lovely review and for the draw.

  • Oh my goodness what a mesmerizing tale. The fragrance certainly matches it! And is anyone else craving Oakmoss? I’m not alone!!! I am absolutely intrigued about this and would love a bottle. Moon Bloom is another I have longed for… as of yet I do not own any of Mr. Hiram Green’s work. Soon hopefully!
    In California

  • I can’t wait to try this! I am so interested based on your descriptions of the scent and story together, as well as it being a chypre with as much oak moss as possible. I have tried several Hiram Green fragrances and so far, my favourites are Arbole and Hyde. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • I am glad for those who enjoy this particular creation or Mr. Hiram Green that they will be able to enjoy it once more if it is relaunched. As for myself, I have never tested anything from this house, but would not mind starting with Shangri La.
    Thank you

  • Thank you dear Ida for this very nice article. I love it when you say: “Hiram Green Shangri La is one of those timeless illuminated chypres which resemble Shakespeare’s Cleopatra: Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.” and also: “It’s a veritable Valley of Flowers forever blossoming in the Himalayas”.
I have tried Hyde, Dilettante and Moon bloom which is my favorite.
    I live in France, EU.

  • I am addicted to Hiram Green fragrances. I own Voyage, Moonbloom, Vivacious and Slowdive. But I do not have Shangri La. I recall having a small sample some years ago and liked it but your description of it now being more light-filled warmly spiced and floral sounds lovely. USA.

  • Jacob D Savitt says:

The spice and oakmoss combination sounds very appealing, as does the name itself- who doesn’t want Shangri La? I’ve never tried any Hiram Green frags but I’m definitely interested now.
    From Elizabeth, NJ

  • I do adore jasmine and vetiver as a combination in fragrances. This sounds like a complete masterpiece. I would love to give this a try! Thank you for the opportunity. From CT, USA.

  • Hi! Never tried arcadia and none of the hiram green fragrances but I love the concept, the bottles and for what I have understand the juices are very well blended and quite long lasting. Shangri La and the honey one are the ones I’m most curious of. Greetings from Italy

  • I love Ida’s description of the glamor of the fruit, florals, and spices all together in Shangri La. I’ve been hoarding my small decant and I’m so excited that the scent will be back in production! I’d love to win a full bottle as I’ve been looking for one for ages. All his fragrances are so gorgeous and original – I also love Vivacious and Hyde is growing on me as well. I’m in MN, USA.

  • I have a very soft spot for Chypres always have. Light-filled, spicy, and luminous sounds like something that can fill a person’s void. I love Moon Bloom, and it is always my go-to Tuberose fix. I live in the US. As always, thanks to CaFleureBon for the top one-of-a-kind content and those who provide the draws.

  • I men once I read cinnamon and peaches I was sold. Fall is here and that sounds like the perfect scent to set it off. Ida mentions the addition of that oakmoss which I imagine freshens it up a bit and I would love to smell it.

I have not tried any other Hiram Green fragrances as this is the first I am hearing of the house.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • I have heard that Shangri La resembles Mitsouko and I love the Guerlain. I feel that Shangri La will be an instant love.
    Thank you!

  • What appeals to me most in the review is the comment that as much oakmoss was used as IFRA allows! The reborn Shangri-La sounds gorgeous. I have Hiram Green’s discovery set and based on that, I bought Arbolé. It is just beautiful! I enjoyed Slowdive too but it’s not as appealing to me as Arbolé. Thanks for doing this draw! I live in the US.

  • I’m crazy about chypres and I like the idea of one blended with Indian spices. Shangri La sounds lovely! I’ve recently tried Hiram Green Slow Dive and am impressed with its complexity and uniqueness. I live in the U.S. Thanks to everyone offering this prize in collaboration.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

Modern chypre, peaches, flowers and spices – so delightful, so appealing! As Ida says “It’s a veritable Valley of Flowers forever blossoming in the Himalayas.” I haven’t tried any perfume from Hiram Green yet. Hugs from Croatia, EU.

  • Femme de Rochas was one of my first introductions to vintage chypres, Mitsouko being the other one. I have had the opportunity to sample Shangri La (old version) and I agree with Ida that even though it hearkens back to its vintage predecessors, it’s a thoroughly modern composition perhaps due to the lack of bitterness and reduced powder note. I’ve sample a few Hiram Green fragrances including Shangri La, Moon Bloom and slow dive. MD, USA.

  • I’ve heard multiple people raving about Shangri La but I unfortunately have never tried it. I love Slow Dive, Moon Bloom and Voyage from Hiram Green and truly believe his scents are not only stunning but out of the ordinary. I love reading about Hilton’s story Lost Horizon.
Many thanks for this opportunity. I live in France.

  • Amazing perfumery from Hiram Green…I am so happy to see Shangri La is back!
Thank you for the beautfiul review, as it explains the root and the origin of the perfum.
I have tried a few from Hiram, and my favourite is Moon Bloom.
    Claudia, EU

  • Hiram Green is my favorite perfume house (along with Andy Tauer). I tried all the perfumes from his line (I own Vivacious and Arbolé Arbolé), except for Shangri-La because my adventure with fragrances started when it was already discontinued (and Moon Bloom is still available). Arcadia is the BEST perfume I had the chance to try this year, and so far the only perfume that managed to win me over as a lavender skeptic. Arcadia will be a gift from me to myself for this Christmas. Ida’s interpretation that the perfume is: comforting as your favorite cashmere (Bengale Rouge automatically comes to mind) coupled with the fact that this perfume was brought back due to high demand/inquiry ( I guess for a good reason), really makes me want this perfume. EU based.

  • Hiram although he is from Canada is a true Dutch master. Love his perfumes and Shrangi La in particular. Living in the EU

  • Though I never tried perfumes from Hiram Green, I really want to try this one because Ida described it soooooo tempting! Simmering of fruit, flower and spice spins a luxurious glamour, it’s fresh, current and comforting as your favorite cashmere, it’s opulent warmth wonderful in all seasons…
    EU

  • I got to be honest that this is the first time I hear something about Hiram Green fragrances, but with Ida’s review I felt in love and surely will try them as soon as possible.
I love peach notes in perfumery and knowing this one combines with warm spices and has a tart citrus notes makes me ansious to try it asap.
I hope i get my nose on it soon.
    USA here.

  • I love the myth-conjuring theme Hiram Green’s chose for his resent fragrances and the name “Shangri La” is certainly befitting a complex, elegant chypre. Spiced peach sounds like a wonderful focal point for three robust floral notes; I’m curious how it interacts with the generous dose of oakmoss, but I always enjoy an oakmoss and vetiver base. I haven’t tried any of Hiram Green’s fragrances and I’d love to try this one (and Arcadia)! Thanks for the review, Ida.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • I have not had the pleasure of smelling any Hiram Green fragrances yet, so hopefully I’ll get the chance. People in the comments seem very excited for the return of this particular perfume, however, so my expectations are quite high now, haha. Great review from Ida. From Sweden, EU.

  • I have smelled Arcadia before, which I utterly adored. Hope this is just as good. From USA.

  • Thank you for this opportunity. I was craving to try the previous version, but I wasn’t able to. So I’m so happy to learn its come back. Ida’s comparaison with Hilton’s novel seems to be perfect, Timeless and idyllic. I have try almost every Hiram Green’s scent, and Arbolé will be one of my christmast gift. From France – EU.

  • I’d love an olfactory paradise worthy of a novel!! I love Chypre. I’ve never tried any from this line, but I do have a sample of one (the name escapes me) in my Luckyscent cart now. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What appeals to me are the mixture of notes: ” Hiram Green Shangri La is indeed an olfactory paradise worthy of an epic novel or film. I have never, unfortunately, tried a Hiram. Hopefully that changes in a coupla weex.

    I live in Waldorf, Maryland.

  • I’ve heard about Hiram Green years ago for the tuberose driven Moon Bloom, but haven’t tried yet any of his creations. I was in Amsterdam in 2019 and wanted to visit the only store I’ve found stocked his creations and it was closed at that time, I don’t remember the reason.
Florals, spices, oakmoss and vetiver sounds like a winning formula to me, I bet this is a wonderful fougere.
    I’m in the EU.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful review Ida! What appeals to me about Hiram Green Arcadia based on Ida’s review is her description of it as being very fitting for a fragrance inspired by a paradise of epic, indeed epic novel, proportions, with it’s bright peachy ripeness, lush expensive florals, and plenty of spicy luxurious “glamorous” magic. I also like how she describes the fragrance as classic but never dated, which is how I love all my fragrances. I can’t wait to try this one!

I have tried and absolutely adore Hiram Green’s Moon Bloom, so opulent and indulgent. I live in the US.

  • I have sampled Arcadia (which I love) and Vetiver (which turned a little sour in the late drydown on my skin) but definitely high quality ingredients are being used. I really want to sample Hyde next. Based on this review I love all of the notes here, and the story that was incorporated into the review. Thanks for the draw!! US.

  • Hiram Green is a house I have no experience with.
Shangri La I think is classy chypre , with some familiar elements, for people with high self esteem.
Rust Orange wool suit , tobacco leather oxford shoes and a white dress shirt is one extra sharp outfit suited for Shangri La.
Thank you Ida, and Hiram Green

  • Chypres are my favourite genre of perfumery so something as famous as Shangri La sounds right up my alley. Loved reading Ida’s evocative review, thanks for your vivid descriptions! I recently got to try Hyde, was very impressed and would love to delve deeper into this brand. I’m from Portland, OR.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Hiram Green Arcadia based on Ida’s review is learning more about Natural Perfumer Hiram Green and how he revisited his exquisite 2014 creation Shangri La, inspired by James Hilton’s hidden Himalayan paradise in the novel Lost Horizon. A timeless Chypre styled fragrance a fruity peach, spicy notes, and floral facets put an interesting twist on the classic bergamot, vetiver, and oakmoss combo. I haven’t tried anything from Hiram Green. I am from the USA.

  • What a beautiful review !!
Would like to test this beauty because I love chypre veryy , very much !
Unfortunately I am not familiar with Hiram Green perfumes.

  • With Hiram Green Shangri La I can say I’m in piece, and the one with the nature.
Rose and orris i like a lot , and I think the smoky balsamic vetiver will add depth , and tranquility to the classical chypre composition
Never had a chance to try Hiram Green fragrances
    Thanks for the draw

Thanks for the great review Ida.
I absolutely love chypres. I cannnot figure out why for the life of me, but the heady mix of citrus, resins and oakmoss just makes my head swoon. The addition of fruity notes like peach and spices, just takes this to a completely different level of chypre.

    Truly an enchanting experience.

I have not smelt any Hiram Green fragranes before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Ida Meister take on Hiram Green Shangri La 2022 made me think of making Peach Cobbler while on vacation somewhere in the Himalayan mountains , mysterious spicy and fruity fragrance i believe.
