I am, it has to be said quite a fan of Gin in its various incarnations and of one of its parent plants, ‘Juniper’, a member of the family of Cypress, ‘Juniperus Cupressaceae’.  A tree that commands special and sacred significance in traditions around the world, ranging from protection and cleansing in the burning of its wood to the tonic and medicinal properties of its berries, the source of our pleasure in gin. Herbalists and shamans, the world over have utilized these properties for thousands of years in ceremonies as diverse as honoring and placating God’s to healing those who suffer with maladies.

Little wonder then, that still now in its distilled form, be it gin or perfume we are drawn to its aromas, there is something vaguely familiar in its odor, something wild and untamed yet a salve.  During my career as a winemaker in New Zealand I was able to distill my own grappa and I am fascinated by this process, truly alchemical that turns plant material into a sparkling, crystalline distillate, drop by drop of aromatic infused tincture. The stuff of sorcerers and bootleggers. The distillation of juniper berries is always present amongst the various aromatics that mark out gin’s particular character, in fact gin is not gin without this highly unique aroma and taste. How appropriate then that Nicolas Chabot of Headspace Parfums and Fanny Bal perfumer chose to highlight juniper in this gin orientated perfume.

Headspace Parfums Genievre utilizes Headspace technology to capture a component at a certain moment in its place of origin. Genievre is one of the highly impressive collections from the dynamic duo of creator Nicolas Chabot and Fanny Bal as the perfumer and they have drawn forth an exultant and effervescent accolade to this component. Its herbal aspects are gifted a rite of passage with a zest of freshly peeled mandarin, Genievre is the scent of a damn fine gin spritzed with mandarin oil, straight over ice, sipped in fine company at water’s edge.

More than that it evokes a sense of ‘joie de vivre, beachside frivolities at the edge of days descent, teasing feet between sand and oceans lap, toying with sensations, glass in hand. Should we escape, just we two, slip away as the twilight crepuscule envelops us. Take some distance from the revelers upon the sand and the rhythm of the dances pulse, a rendezvous out on the periphery of the gathering where the rippling reverberations of music are joined by another rhythm of waves and the breath of winds.

Mediterranean Sea Danu Seith-Fyr 2012©

Shall we stand, out there at the edges of water and earth, saline kissed, the pleasure of sea caresses around our feet and raise a glass to life. The liquid within bright and clear, ice in collision with gin, releasing its aromas as we voyage on its scents. Luminescence ignites, pink pepper in sparkling profusion partners the herbal lay as Juniper berries divest their secrets, complex and alluring.

Mandarin is a masterstroke here as it gathers up all its fellow components and rolls the entirety off my skin, evoking a complete moment of harmonious enjoyment, allowing my nose to imbibe initially, before that first sip, it is the scent of a dusk saturated grove of mandarin trees, dusty underfoot with warmed earth and the cicada’s evensong rise. As the night gathers her darkened robes about her, and our senses are shifted in priority, sight gives way to enhanced olfaction, the winds, gentle and warmed herald forth the forest’s exhalations at days end, cedarwood expanded by the days heat and sun’s attentions releases its warm and voluptuous richness melded with wisps of olibanum, resinous yet lifted aloft. As the last pigments tint the edges of the sea and we sip, the touch of the sun’s warmth is within, a contentment in company, a joy of living, the taste of aromatics, the beats of the music still within our body, dancing in abandon at the liminal, elemental lines.

Mellowing in deepened satisfaction and the tempo of warmer climes, Genievre leaves a tingling wake on skin married to the perfect gin martini gliding across your palate like the afterglow of a replete lover, it lingers long into the night’s folds.

This is what I’d wear on a last minute trip to discover a new place. I place to be carefree and laugh from my heart and soul! Sounds absolutely lovely. Would love to win! I’m in USA

  • This sounds really refreshing and perfect for the warmer months that are slowly but surely approaching. I love the idea of a gin spritz that I can wear. Danu praised its joyful and carefree qualities and I would love to experience them. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

I love fragrances that explore the gin and tonic effect, and this fragrance sounds like a wonderful one to try as well. I love that there is a special Headspace technology to capture the scent at it’s best phase. I live in Maryland USA.

  • First of all, I love the name of this fragrance! Very witty.
Secondly, I love everything about gin. Its taste, its aftertaste, the smell and the texture, the fizziness and lightness and, last but not least, that paradoxically both energized and laid back elation that “fresh” alcoholic drinks give.
The fact that Headspace captures a specific molecule in a specific moment is absolutely fascinating to me, and I would love to smell this beachy, summery manifestation of gin.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • 92.50% natural ingredients that’s truly amazing! This perfume sounds like it’s warm and watery at the same time very intriguing. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

Don’t have any gin fragrances. I can only imagine how it would smell in the summertime. I’ve been to the Mediterranean and I can smell the fresh air coming off the sea. Interesting to read where gin comes from and all its uses aside from being in fragrances.

  • I love that Danu’s description of Genievre is like showcasing carefree days and the pleasure of shared nights, this sounds so romantic. And the play of notes – from the zest of freshly peeled mandarin to the lingering warmth of cedarwood and olibanum, is so poetically pictures beachside frivolities and twilight rendezvous. The focus on juniper berries and the masterstroke of mandarin make me find this gin-inspired perfume curious and joyful!

This reminds me of Istrian summers and drinking copious quantities of gin with Pašareta – a local soda of vibrant orange colour in the evenings. Evocative and powerful, this perfume must be a summertime gem.

Magnetic prose as always dear Danu, you have managed to paint the ghost of the perfume in my mind’s eye in such vibrant,, captivating hews of colour. I can almost hear the clinking of ice against fine crystal and smell the gin blended with the sea air.

  • Well if anything, the image and description of the drink in the review made me thirsty, so I can only imagine what wearing the scent will evoke. And I also love to try out smaller niche brands, so I’d like to own this.

Sounds lovely and primordial at the same time, I have no idea what distilled juniper or olibanum could smell like. I live in the EU

  • I would say this line sparked my interest, “Genievre is the scent of a damn fine gin spritzed with mandarin oil, straight over ice, sipped in fine company at water’s edge”. US

  • I love a strong, clear juniper note—it cuts through even the heaviest of backdrops and there’s something invigorating about it (in or out of chilled gin). I didn’t realize herbalists and shamans historically used juniper as Medicine, for “protection and cleansing in the burning of its wood to the tonic and medicinal properties of its berries”. That context as salve from the wild adds something to its presence in aromatic perfumes. And this perfume sounds extrordinarily fresh: “Genievre is the scent of a damn fine gin spritzed with mandarin oil, straight over ice, sipped in fine company at water’s edge.” Wonderful, and an interesting use of headspace technology. The mandarin seems like as much a standout as the juniper, though a touch of salt is inspired, as is some olibanum for resinous contrast. Would love to try this one. Great review!

    I’m in the USA.

  • Enjoyed learning about juniper berries use in medicine and gin. Headspace technology is quite fascinating and I ordered the discovery set from this company from LUCKYSCENT

  • Headspace Parfums Genievre intrigues me…anything that plays with my love of gin usually is a complete win for me. When Danu says strips of mandarin zest over ice, I have to admit my mouth watered.

  • The allure of this perfume is like a spirited dance with juniper’s untamed essence – a fragrance that whispers tales of alchemy, from mystical traditions to the spirited craft of distillation.Cheers to the perfume that captures the spirit of juniper with a touch of sorcery and a dash of bootlegger chic!
    Thanks for this great giveaway.

  • Hello!
Refreshing, sparkling, yet alluring…sounds too good! I haven’t tried any gin oriented perfumes yet. Genièvre would be a good one to start with!

  • Gin and tonic is my preferred summer drink and the scent immediately sends me to my happy place. The headspace technology is fascinating and captures all the subtle nuance of the juniper and other botanicals. The addition of mandarin seems to add some sunniness and warmth to the composition. I have tried Penhaligon’s Much Ado About The Duke before, which I loved. Eliam Puente’s Zotikos, which I won through CaFleureBon (many thanks!), was also a love of mine. Point is, I tend to enjoy gin-centered perfumes, and this seems no different based on Danu’s review!

What interests me about Headspace Parfums Genievre based on Danu’s review is learning more about this amazing brand Headspace. I love learning that this fragrance is made of 92.5% ingredients. It sounds completely unisex, Genievre is the scent of a damn fine gin spritzed with mandarin oil, straight over ice, sipped in fine company at water’s edge. I love how this brand really captures a specific moment in time. Creators Nicolas Chabot and Fanny Bal did an incredible job with this one. I am from the USA.

  • I’m looking forward to smelling that composition. The juniper note is one of my favorites. Greetings from Spain

  • I love Headspace! I love how it’s primarily naturals but has a clean finish, not weighed down. This one I haven’t tried yet but I love the notes. I think it’s going to be in the genre of the classic California Clementine by Atelier Cologne and I am super excited for that! But it will be Headspace all the way. I am thankful for the chance to win. In California

  • Sounds like a lovely composition. I always liked the way gin smelled refreshing and this would be like everything described. I’m in the US and would welcome a try. Thank you.

    Thanks for the lovely review.

I was immediately struck by its unique and captivating scent. The perfume is described as having herbal, citrusy, and woody notes, and I found this to be an accurate description. The juniper berry, the main botanical ingredient in gin, is definitely the star of the show, but it is balanced beautifully by the other notes. The result is a perfume that is both refreshing and sophisticated.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Gin and tonic are two refreshing notes, i loved the review.
I would love to get my nose on this fragrance.
