Happy Lunar New Year 2023 + 3 Fragrances for the Year of The Water Rabbit Giveaways

Lunar New Year 2023

Lunar New Year 2023 Collage by Rachel Ng

Culturally, in Asia, traditionally the Year of the Rabbit is associated with (and represents) peaceful and patient energy (chi). The water element especially stresses wisdom and being able to canter and trust one’s inner instincts. Lunar New Year 2023 will be a good year for everyone to focus on self-healing, building peaceful relationships, diplomacy, and building professional bridges.Rachel Ng, Albright Scholar-East Asian Languages and Cultures, Educator and ÇaFleureBon reader

Fragrances for the Lunar New Year 2023, the Year of the Water rabbit

Fragrances  for the Lunar New Year 2023 by Karl

The Lunar New Year 2023 (aka Chinese New Year), starts from January 22nd, 2023, ending on February 9th, 2024. Like most New Years celebrated worldwide, it symbolizes a fresh start. Especially important is the water element, which highlights wisdom, attuning one’s sense to grounding and trusting inner instincts. Focus on managing finances, recognizing the need for self-healing (both emotionally and physically) diplomacy and enhancing personal and business relationships are to the fore. For the purpose of today’s article on the Lunar New Year 2023, I chose three fragrances that convey a few specific elements and ingredients associated with the Year of the Water Rabbit in olfactory terms: One to invigorate, one to provide balance and one to provide slow abundant energy.

Matiere Premiere Neroli Oranger

Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger photo courtesy of the brand

Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger is a citrus lover’s  delight and is in keeping with the perfume ingredients that are meaningful in the Lunar Year 2023. Master Perfumer and founder Aurelien Guichard has taken the central theme of Neroli, Tunisian Orange Blossom and wrapped it in soft florals of Ylang-Ylang and musks (synthetic). To me this perfume is perfect for starting the day with a bright disposition. When you wish to freshen up both body and mind; enjoy a citrus smoothie, work in at the gym or outside rather than ‘work out’. The focus here being gathering and enhancing your energy via diaphragmatic breathing and flowing exercises rather than pushing out the energy in demanding ways. The orange blossom does highlight  the flower’s slightly indolic sweet nature, whilst there is also a sharp rind like quality which is off set by creamy musks. It is lively with wonderful projection and longevity. Notes: Absolute Orange Blossom, Neroli Oil from Lebanon, Bergamot Oil from Italy, Ylang-Ylang Oil Comoros, Floral Musks.

Parfums L'ame Du Bois Cedre Mineral

Parfums L’Ame Du Bois (Scents of Wood) Cedre Mineral courtesy of the brand

Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral by Celine Barel is a fragrant exploration of woods, aquatic nuances and resins which transforms from cool and bracing towards hazy and velvety to rich and luscious. Created under the direction of founder Fabrice Croise, L’Ame Du Bois Cedre Mineral takes me to mountain ranges with the crisp air and crunching snow under foot, whilst the calming resins in the mid create a soothing wrapped up cosiness of taking in the ambience and sipping a creamy, hot latte from lashings of amber and tonka. It is s slow perfume that meanders in and out of the senses giving an enveloping hug just like a cashmere sweater. Whilst the brand concept is also based around ShinrinYoku, the brand’s Japanese name; I feel that this perfume is perfect for the idea of peaceful and patient energy which the water rabbit represents. L’Ame Du Bois Cedre Mineral has plenty of aspects to keep one interested, from the use of cypress oil, juniper berries and caraway oil through to the decadent textures of olibanum oil, guaiac wood oil, sandalwood oil and ambertonic. The patented operanide adds the crispness, which works surprisingly well with the comforting tonka bean absolute. Lately musky aquatic perfumes have been my go-to and Cedre Mineral adds a new twist to my collection. Notes: Cypress Oil, Juniper Berries, Bergamot, Caraway Oil, Lavandin Heart LMR, Olibanum Oil, Guaiacwood Oil, Operanide, Sandalwood Oil, Ambertonic, Tonka Bean Absolute.

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is a good fragrance for the Lunar New Year 2023

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud by Karl

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud created as a fable of coexistence between oud wood and sea water. The clashing of the strength of the elements gives me an experience which is unique and most unexpected. I raved about this composition by nose Ramon Monegal last year and link it to my own ‘travelers’ soul’. It has stayed with me through rough waters and calm seas which I have stayed through the course. The calone / agarwood dichotomy may be a challenge. However, the transition of notes from resins to florals in the heart add subtlety and depth. With its expansive quality Ocean Oud provides one with an olfactive adventure to stir the heart and leave an everlasting impression. It is a real kick-start to harness one’s energy and take on the challenges of life. It is an ode to the strength and beauty of our world and a character-building fragrance and one to remind us to keep strong throughout life’s ups and down and have hope which is an important symbol to Lunar New Year 2023. Notes: Calone, Cistus Ladanifer, Amberwood, Oud Assam, Oud Padong Laos, Rose, Jasmine, Ambergris, Oakmoss, Musk.

Many thanks to Rachel Ng who gave precious time to discuss the cultural importance of the Lunar New Year 2023 and the traditions linked with the year of the Water Rabbit.

Editor’s Note: Those born in 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023 are also considered Rabbits in the Chinese zodiac. Only those born in 1963, 2011 and 2023 are Water Rabbits. The traditional Lunar Year is always calculated in accordance with the moon, this being the reason why its exact date varies from year to year: new moon sets the date and new beginnings!

  • The outstanding details and intriguing facts appeal to me about Karl’s essay. Rachel’s introduction was absolutely stunning. I love her introductions, they motivate me to read everything. My choice is a 50 ml bottle of Ocean Oud, it sounds stunning. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Thanks, Karl and Rachel for beautiful choices for Lunar Year and interesting description!
Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger sounds same time fresh and little poignant!
Ocean Oud has very interesting and contrasting ingredients – woody oud with freshness of Calone and Citruses.
I would like to win Neroli Orange MP.

Neroli Oranger it is perfect for starting the day with a bright disposition.
The orange blossom does highlight the flower’s slightly indolic sweet nature, whilst there is also a sharp rind like quality which is off set by creamy musks.
    I like to win

  • Happy Lunar year . I enjoyed Rachel’s introduction and Karls essay.I do love all the Fragrance picks. Neroli Orange stands out the most with me. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Hi dear Çafleurebon! I would be interested in Neroli Oranger.
I am not very good at describing or explaining things as English is my second language. I am from US, Thank you

  • From the introduction I learned which Asian year this was. And from the essay I was drawn to Ocean Oud because of the mix of oud and sea water. I choose the Ocean Oud for the draw. US

  • I love the idea of matching fragrances to themes of the Lunar New Year and the Water Rabbit. It’s a unique approach and this has me thinking about a few from my collection I may try to work into rotation. I know immediately which I would choose for invigoration and abundant energy – choosing the perfect one for balance may take me a while. I’ll sleep on that. Karl made some very suitable choices here. I think I would be particularly fond of his first and third selections. If I were to win, I think I would go with Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud. Reading from NC, USA.

  • That’s very cool that a reader did an intro. An Albright Scholar-no less. What appealed to me is that it sounds like it seems lunar new year rabbit is hopeful.
Nice to see scents of woods too.
I love Neroli so Matiere Premiere Neroli Oranger is my choice.
    USA

  • Beautifully written, as always. I am not the biggest neroli fan, the only ive found ive linked so far is in windows down by henry rose, which is kind of like a new take on gap dream. Its wonderful. I do like the Matière Premiere line, however, especially those bottles, so simple and gorgeous. Maybe id like neroli here? I am a huge fan of ylang ylang. I think i may take this as a bit of a challenge this summer and order some neroli samples, im sure there are plenty i would love. In the right dose, with the right supporting players, its wonderful note. The calone/oud combo sounds interesting. Being of perfume wearing age in the late 90s/early 00s (born in 85), i am quite familiar with calone and it has put me off from aquatics ever since, as myself and all my schoolmates doused ourselves in it for years. It never quite fell right on me, but it inescapable at the time. Im curious and have no preconceived ideas about how the combo could smell. I love learning more from both the authors – about each fragrance but also culture! If i had to choose, i would definitely be going with neroli. Oud can be a bit challenging on its own, add in calone and it might be traumatic for me, lol! I definitely wouldnt turn away smelling a sample, but i do not foresee myself wearing something like that. Neroli, i think i will warm to with time. Im in Bellingham, wa.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I love the description of orange flower being indolic. I would love to win the neroli orange. I live in Indiana.

  • Rachel’s intro was beautiful, it invoked a sense of peace and hope that Karl’s essay and subsequent choices solidified. If I won I’d choose the Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud. I live in Missouri, USA.

  • I love a water note in a fragrance.
I have smelled the Matiere Premier and enjoy the scent.
I have enjoyed the Scents of wood fragrance.
But if I had to pick it is hard to not choose a Monegal.
I enjoy all of the celebration of the lunar new year but take with a grain of salt.
    Oklahoma USA

  • I love a good challenging fragrance, especially in the aquatic territory! Thoroughly enjoy my bottle of Oud Minerale by Tom Ford and have also have picked up some similar style fragrances like Megamare. Should I win I would love to have the bottle of Ocean Oud! Karl’s description of the Resins to florals transition in Ocean Oud sounds magical. I could use the abundant energy aspect of the year of the Rabbit to help with a new job. Please ship to Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Happy lunar new year to all.

The way a new beginning was described to introduce Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger, was great.
    That one caught my attention.
It’s all about a new fresh beginning. As fresh and refreshing smell of Neroli Oranger, definitely will be delightful.

    From the USA.

  • I hope 2023 would be a genuine Year of the Rabbit, like Rachel Ng let us know, peaceful, and it would represent the patient energy.
I’m on a right track myself, but the world needs more diplomacy, and peaceful relationships now , we’re in the Year of the Rabbit after all

    Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
I enjoy wearing smooth , citrus smoothie fragrances all year round, not just in the Fall or Winter.
Aurélien Guichard i know for Gucci Intense Oud. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with Matiere Premiere fragrances.

Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral
Decadent fragrance with cypress, creamy Latte, and ShinrinYoku inspiration behind.

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is truly opulent, enigmatic fragrance, unique representation of Ramon Monegal idea of marine fragrance , on top of leather, oud and rose.
Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger would be my choice
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • While I can’t relate to that Zodiac stuff at all, I share the love for perfume
Ocean Oud sounds stunning, I feel the sense of combining water and earth. There have been approaches before, but the way you describe it, already in your amazing review last June, is stunning. I guess also the black and white design of the bottle calls for these opposite elements. I’d be happy to share your fire of passion (as the third element) for this scent. I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • I really enjoyed Rachel’s intro into the backstory of the Lunar New Years and the rabbit, first time hearing of the water element too. I’ve seen the Scents of Wood bottle on LuckyScents and thats what really drew my attention and has a lot of notes that i’m not really familiar with. Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger sounds like something that I would wear day to day since I tend to stick to citrusy scents. Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is the newest one for me (scent wise) with an ocean and oud wood. If I were to win, I would love to have a bottle of Ocean Oud. From TX, USA.

  • The Year of the Rabbit is associated with (and represents) peaceful and patient energy. Neroli Oranger is a good choice for the year of the rabbit as it employs many ingredients that also symbolize the Year of the Rabbit. My choice is Neroli Oranger. I am in US.

  • What appeals to me the most about Karl’s essay and Rachel’s introduction to the Lunar New Year 2023 is that they successfully draw a parallel between specific elements and ingredients of perfumes with the Year of the Water Rabbit in olfactory terms. A fresh start, calming energy, reminder to keep strong throughout life’s ups and down and have hope.
    I’d choose Neroli Oranger.
    EU

  • Great article!
Love citruses and with neroli and orange flower seems not so unique, but I believe Mr Guichard talent to creat very beautiful perfumes.
    Ocean Oud sounds very interesting!
Would love to win Neroli Oranger.
    US

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Thank you so much for this review and draw! I really enjoyed hearing about the context and associations of this specific New Year and the sense of what the rabbit and water symbolizes. Excited to be in a year connected with “peaceful and patient” energy and healthy budgeting (lol…honestly an excellent reminder for a collector!). The choice of Neroli Oranger is apropos and, as per the review, I do find it invigorating and peace-making. Not familiar with the other scents, but love how they combine a sense of woodiness with aqueous notes. Thank you so much for the generous draw–I’d choose Neroli Oranger, a scent a know and love (although would gladly take either). I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • I didn’t know much about the Lunar New Year but Karl’s intro was helpful. I’m not a rabbit or water rabbit. Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud sounds interesting. I’d like to win Ocean Oud. New Jersey, USA

  • From these amazing prizes, I would choose Neroli Oranger as I feel it has the ability to uplift one’s mood and also relax the senses. The notes in this perfume have therapeutic properties to me.
I am in Europe. Thank you

  • What a great idea to have perfumes for the year of the rabbit. Sounds like it will be a good year and we need one.
All your choices are great but the Ocean Oud is fascinating me for the mix of two unlikely ingredients

  • I liked learning about The Year of the Rabbit. Self-healing is so important. Neroli Oranger sounds delicious, with its Tunisian Orange Blossom note. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • What a fascinating article! Thank you for explaining the year of the Water Rabbit. Of the three fragrances mentioned, Neroli Oranger is the only I have tried. I rarely reached for citrus perfumes in the past. Suddenly, in the last few months I am consistently gravitating toward them. Neroli Oranger is a gorgeous perfume and the bottle I would love to win. ~Indiana

  • Happy to learn that 2023 should be a good year to focus on self-healing and building peaceful relationships. Also, rabbits are cute, so I enjoy the rabbit-themed art this year, hehe. I liked the choice of perfumes that could be tied back to the elemental themes of the new lunar year. Neroli Oranger sounds uplifting but I’m drawn in by how Cedre Mineral is likened to a “cashmere sweater” and juxtaposes cool woody notes with warmth. Perfumes that “meander” through distinct sensory moments are some of my favorites any time of year.

I could use some more patience and peace, so my pick to win would be Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Cedre Mineral. I’m in the USA, thank you for the draw and happy lunar new year!

  • I love the concept behind this post! My spouse is a water rabbit. I didn’t know that until reading this. I would love to win Ocean Oud if I’m lucky! Thank you to all for a fun, informative, and generous review. I’m in the USA.

  • hippononamus says:

Rachel’s intro about emphasizing peaceful and patient energy really translates to the description of these fragrances. I really love the sound of the Scents of Wood and have been meaning to try the line for some time. Ocean Oud sounds most to my taste, so I’d go for that. I’m in the US.

  • Rachel’s introduction provided a short but nice background to the lunar year of the rabbit (I believe it is also the Year of the Cat in Vietnam). I did not know about the Years of the Water Rabbits (1963, 2011, and 2023). I am quite intrigued by Karl’s review of Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud. Of course I love oud so I am drawn to it, but this description by Karl also captured my heart and interest – ” It is a real kick-start to harness one’s energy and take on the challenges of life. It is an ode to the strength and beauty of our world and a character-building fragrance and one to remind us to keep strong throughout life’s ups and down and have hope which is an important symbol to Lunar New Year 2023″. So were I to win this generous draw I would choose Ocean Oud. Don’t know much of ladanifer note so curious about that too. Happy Year of the Water Rabbit!! I am from the continental USA.

  • As a Rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac, I find this article great. Rachel and Karl gave excellent choices. Neroli Oranger is a good bright citrus choice. I tried it a while back and find the description matching exactly what I remember. Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral Is new to me. With woods/aquatics/resins I find this matches this lunar year very well. What caught my eye was Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud. As a lover of oud I found the description mesmerizing. The matching of oud wood to sea water is something I would love to try. I also love that it transitions to florals.

USA. I would love to try Ocean Oud

  • liquidasset77 says:

I’d love to get my hands on the Scent Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral. The description is so intriguing.

  • What a fascinating read on the importance of scent symbolism in the lunar New Year. It’s interesting to learn that the year of the rabbit is associated with peaceful and patient energy and the water element (wisdom) is an important feature. I wasn’t born in the year of the rabbit but I am an astrological water sign and would love to win Ramon Monegal’s Ocean Oud. MD, USA.

  • Happy lunar year!! I would love to win Neroli Oranger! I do adore orange flower! From Ct USA

  • It was interesting learning about the Year of the Rabbit, and what it represents. I’m all for professional bridges, diplomacy and peace.
    -Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
From Matiere Premiere i only have experience with Oud Seven , non linear fragrance , the whole metamorphosis animalic oud , to comforting resins , vetiver and tobacco is both aggressive, and appealing at the same time. I own a bottle. Neroli Oranger i like because of the different approach to a fresh fragrance , more citrus smoothie like , more energetic and fun
-Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral. I was not aware of ShinrinYoku concept, Cerde Minerale is elaborate fragrance, with smoke , tonka and cypress.
-Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud , i was almost transported me to sea coast Spain, in the late Fall . The mixture is mysterious , energetic marine and woody fragrance
Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger would be great
Thank you Rachel Ng , Karl, Matière Premiere , and Ramon Monegal

  • Happy New Year to all! This is quite a collection of perfumes. All unique and special. My mother is a rabbit, and she is quite the worker and networker. I think of the famous quote by Bruce Li/Lee. “Be water my friend” it’s helped me through so many trying times. And the other well known old African adage “Water has no enemy”.
I would love the Neroli Oranger. I am in USA. Thank you.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Thank you both, Rachel and Karl on describing both the Lunar New Year and the 3 fragrances chosen to represent the year of the Water Rabbit. I currently own Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral and find Karl’s olfactive description of this creation to be right on. I know I will enjoy Neroli Oranger’s sense of freshness, as well as, the “strength and beauty” of Ocean Oud. To celebrate the Lunar New Year, I will try and practice “Peaceful and Patient energy” as I anxiously await to see if I’m lucky enough to win this giveaway 🙂
My choice is for either one of these quality creations – both sound wonderful! I live in the US.

  • RonaldProkes17 says:

Rachel’s introduction was very enlightening to me. I’ve always been so intrigued by the Lunar New Year and the qualities of each associated with a given animal or spirit. I think Rachel did an excellent job in outlining the key qualities of this coming year to focus on. I think it provides us with a helpful lens through which to view our own lives and the possibilities within it – sometimes we look at our life as too uniform and stagnant. But allowing the year to shape us and bring out certain attributes in us to meet the year was enlightening.
I was similarly enthralled and connected to Karl’s descriptions of all the scents. But in particular, Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud spoke to something deeper in me. I have been through very difficult times these past three or so years and it was delving deep into perfume that helped me find new ground to escape to and eventually return to solid footing. I very much connected to Karl saying that the fragrance spoke to his “traveler’s soul’ It also reminded me of the quote by Henry James “Hardship passes through and we remain.”

My choice, for obvious reasons, would be Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud.
I really hope I get to try such a unique scent.
I am located in the US.

  • I don’t follow the animal type of year from the Chinese calendar, but nonetheless it was interesting to read about it and it made me search what animal I am: a dog!
Monegal has some fantastic creations and you make Ocean Oud sound like a must try!
I’d like to win Ocean Oud. I am based in the EU.

  • Taleofarose says:

I always get lost (in a good way) in Karl’s thoughts about scents. I always find myself wanting for more. He creates sensations rather than images.

Ocean Oud would be for me.

    I live in Portugal/EU

  • Nikolina_84 says:

I find it appealing that the Lunar New Year symbolizes a fresh start with water element in the focus, which highlights wisdom, attuning one’s sense to grounding and trusting inner instincts. I think this is a good choice of perfumes for that occasion – Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger perfect for starting the day with a bright disposition and freshening up both body and mind, Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral – a slow perfume that meanders in and out of the senses giving an enveloping hug just like a cashmere sweater and Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud – “a real kick-start to harness one’s energy and take on the challenges of life. It is an ode to the strength and beauty of our world and a character-building fragrance and one to remind us to keep strong throughout life’s ups and down and have hope…”.
    I’d choose Neroli Oranger.

  • Interesting choices to celebrate Lunar New Year, with 3 awesome brands featured. Great job by Karl and Rachel in compiling this article. Ocean Oud sounds lovely, which is the fragrance that I would like to win. Hopefully I can.

  • Zoran Loncarevic says:

Thank you Karl and Rachel for the beautiful selection for the Lunar Year pf Rabbit and the very interesting description of the fragrances. Of the three, my favorite is Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud. That sounds super exciting to me . Many thanks and greetings from Munich / Germany

  • bigscoundrel says:

Thank you for the background on what the year of the rabbit represents. I liked the detailed breakdowns. It made me very interested in Neroli Oranger. I’m in New Jersey, USA

  • Well, I just learnt from Rachel’s intro that my brother was born in the year of the rabbit – he can be rather diplomatic, so I guess that makes sense.
I really liked what Karl said about “enhancing your energy via diaphragmatic breathing and flowing exercises rather than pushing out the energy in demanding ways.” This is something I could do more of in my life. Consequently, if I did win, I would like the Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger.

  • Love the fresh sensation in morning that matiere premiere neroli has given me. I have tried a sample and I really enjoy as well as Rachel.
    Greetings from Italy

  • Thanks for the review Karl and Rachel.
I am a huge fan of Matiere Premiere and Ramon Monegal work, they surely add something different to the perfumery world.
I would love to try Ocean Oud and Neroli Oranger, but specially Ocean Oud because It mixes two things that I totally adore: oud and aquatic notes. With the quality of Ramon Monegal adds this surely is a gem created by the gods of perfumery.
I loved the introduction about the Lunar Year.
I hope I win Ocean Oud.
    USA here.

  • What a beautiful and informative essay by Karl’s and Rachel’s introduction to the Lunar New Year 2023 especially loved reading about what it represents and various elemental association. Since water is one of the elements, Ramon monegal ocean Oud spoke to me and would be my choice if I so win. Based in the US

  • Ocean Oud, “a fable of coexistence between oud wood and sea water”, sounds absolutely mesmerizing. And indeed it seems very fit to the Year of the Water Rabbit, with its peace, wisdom and growth. May it be a gentle one for us all!
I would love to win Ocean Oud from the EU.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated Karl’s thorough breakdown of each fragrance; he did his homework, and painted a very nice picture of each. Rachel’s introduction Involed a nice sense of peace.

I would like to win Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • We’re living in a crazy scary times right now, geopolitically the globe is full of tensions , and as scary as it gets. Doesn’t matter where you live, or you stand politically, we could all agree the time for building peaceful relationships has come. The Year of the Rabbit i believe represents what the world needs right now.

    Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
I’ve smelled all Matiere Premiere fragrances, and if I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Encens Suave
    2. Santal Austral
    3. Falcon Leather/Neroli Oranger
I’m on the same page with Karl about Neroli Oranger, invigorating , mostly warm weather neroli fragrance. I also perceive some traces of rose too

Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral
One the best new houses on the market for the past few years. High end woody aromatic, and heavy on the incense too

Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is trailblazing fragrance , I like its complexity, and the fact the scent is both dark , and cold .
I fully agree with Karl , the fragrance is challenging , and I believe made for connoisseurs.
It leaves me with the overall impression that I’m smelling Davy Jones , who just came on the shore out of the “Flying Dutchman”.

I’d like to win Neroli Oranger by Matière Premiere

  • The intro by Rachel is so succinctly put! I also loved the way Karl tied each fragrance to an aspect of the Year of the Rabbit. LNY has a lot of symbolisms involved so that was quite fitting. Each fragrance was so beautifully described; great article! I’d love Neroli Oranger, thanks for this opportunity!

  • Thank You for this beautiful review. It is appealing to me that Rachel mentioned in her introduction: ‘New Year 2023 will be a good year for everyone to focus on self-healing’. For me self-healing is one of the most important points of perfumery. Perfume can really create the wonderful therapy by raising level of happiness hormones. Also, Karl has chosen these 3 fragrances wisely – in his essay, everything about the notes connects to the strong energy of water rabbit.
My choice is a 50ml bottle of Matiere Premiere Neroli Oranger.
    Lithuania, EU.

  • “One to invigorate, one to provide balance and one to provide slow abundant energy.” What else do we need? 🙂 Let’s all have a great Lunar New Year 2023!
Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud would be my choice in case I get lucky because I could use this fragrance to remind me to keep strong throughout life’s ups and downs and have hope. Cheers to Lunar New Year 2023 and let us all be wise and connected to ourselves!
    Hugs from Romania

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Karl’s words made me imagine a body of water, first calm, clear and serene, then growing in body while crossing silent woods and rocky mountains, and ending in a loud million drops explosion, falling from mesmerizing height to only become, again, like in a cycle, calm, clear and serene.
Very informative, Rachel’s contribution, since I have little knowledge about the chinese zodiac & astrology.
I would like to win Neroli Oranger, and I am living in Europe.

  • Dproductive1 says:

Thank you to Rachel for enlightening us on the significance of The Year of the Rabbit in the Asian lunar calendar. As we navigate through these trying times, embracing diplomacy and fortifying our relationships could prove to be of immense benefit to us all.

Karl’s captivating description of Ocean Oud piqued my interest. Although I am not particularly fond of aquatic fragrances, the allure of Ocean Oud appears irresistible. I’d choose Ocean Oud should I win. I live in Pennsylvania

  • Since I grew up with an orange tree in the backyard, I would love an “citrus lovers delight”. I could use a fragrance to start the day with a bright disposition during this dreary winter. Love that this is the year of the “gentle” bunny, maybe that will reflect in 2023. Happy Lunar Year!! I’d love to win Neroli Oranger. Thanks for the chance.

  • Per Rachel, a commitment to invigoration, balance, and slow but abundant energy sounds like a great way to start off the year! I love Karl’s description of Neroli Oranger and how it highlights so many facets of the flower – indolic, sweet, sharp, and creamy. Neroli Oranger would definitely be my choice if I win! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I knew nothing about the Chinese zodiac, and I’d like to thank Rachel Ng for filling us in , I even wanted to learn more. We’ll see if 2023 will be peaceful, or the other way around.
    ☆ Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
I have the pleasure of owning Encens Suave, it smells like I’m eating Tiramisù , with burning incense cons next to me.
Neroli Oranger is like Orange Blossom Cake and bergamot juice in the Summer, Pastry Chef can’t stay still…
☆ Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral is calming woody fragrance, with incense and juniper berries
☆ Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud is conceptual fragrance , and reminds me of my unfulfilled dream to have my own boat restaurant.
I’ll be happy to win Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
Appreciate Rachel Ng Chinese zodiac introduction, Karl Topham review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Lunar New Year is very important in my culture but I live away from my home country and this year I spent it without much celebration. I loved Rachel and Karl’s view and prognosis for the new year of healing and peace. I really hope it is! As it would totally brighten my outlook, I would love to win Matiere Premiere Neroli Oranger. I’m in the US.

Great details about the Lunar year and awesome description of the fragrances and the way they smell. My choice is the incredible Ocean Oud, i heard that it can be considered a marine oud,an oud that can be worn in the summer. I live in Greece, Eu.

Thanks for the great writeup, Karl!

The Lunar New Year has been tinged by great sadness this year in the US. Rachel Ng’s blurb brought that to the front of my mind and I hope that the people affected by it find ways to heal.

Keeping this in mind, Matiere’s Veroli Oranger speaks to me the most, with its use of citruses and neroli to pull the wearer into a state of fresh zestfullness.

I would love to win a bottle of this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Happy Lunar New Year to everyone! I like that you started this list by telling us a bit about the Year of the Rabbit—especially with Rachel’s quote, and then in your introduction. All three listed perfumes are good choices, but Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral stood out to me; I love at least one of Barel’s other perfumes, I enjoy the Scents of Wood fragrance I’ve tried, and Karl’s take on Cedre Mineral as “peaceful and patient energy” sold me. I wish I could wear calone-heavy fragrances, because Ocean Oud is a bold concept.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway—I’d love to win Neroli Oranger.

  • I knew the sign of Rabbit is a symbol of longevity in the Chinese culture, and enjoyed learning more about the meaning , and associations of the Year of the Rabbit.
    a)Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
Encens Suave I’ve smelled , high end gourmand with leather. What I find interesting in Neroli Oranger is the natural smell , and the lively characteristics with less soapy, and more citrus smoothie smell. No doubt Neroli Oranger is more versatile , compared to Encens Suave.
b)Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral
ShinrinYoku concept, cashmere sweater , cypress, incense and gin . All Scents of Wood fragrances are boozy to some degree, including Cedre Mineral. I can smell gin from the first spay.
    c)Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud
    Mysterious marine and oud fragrance
I’d love to win Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
    Thank you for the opportunity

I have always been interested in astrology; surrounded by the western horoscopes at all times, I craved to reach further and learn more and that was how, as a teenager in times of no internet I found out about the Chinese Zodiac and that opened brand new dimensions for me. Currently, with plans for significant life changes coming up, I am happy to know the Year of the Rabbit is going to be a time of self-healing and building peaceful relationships, with water making us trust our inner instincts. Very grateful to Rachel for the intro. Karl has managed to fit the characters of the three perfume picks into the energetic flow of the New Lunar Year. Love all of the choices though Ocean Oud has attracted me the most with its character-building quality based on the dychotomy of calone and agarwood. Ocean Oud would therefore be my pick. Thank you from the EU

  • I know that in traditional Chinese culture, the symptoms are often believed by some doctors and patients as being caused by disruptions in the flow or circulation of Chi , all other information , about the Chi ,and the Year of the Rabbit was new , and fascinating to me , thanks Rachel Ng

Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger is zesty and luminous , full of energy fragrance, made by the talented Aurélien Guichard

Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral
Such a good looking bottle . The scent is woody , marine and there’s incense , with or without ShinrinYoku i started thinking of Japan.

    Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud
All Ramon Monegal fragrances I’ve tried are provocative, and quite powerful . Karl Topham review made me believe through Ocean Oud I’ll be able to hear the song of the sea , and maybe even Poseidon .

I’ll be happy to win Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger
    Thanks for the draw

  • I find the article very informative and I appreciate learning more about the Lunar New Year 2023. Starting with Rachel’s intro on Asian tradition and culture and the meaning of the Year of The Rabbit. I am a citrus lover and Karl’s description of Neroli Oranger is what appealed to me and it would be my choice. Bright, lively and perfect to start the day. Thank you. TX USA

  • Oh Rachel! Thank you so much for giving us an understanding of what the Lunar Year is all about and explaining some of the traditions. The Year of the Water Rabbits has arrived just in time. Some calm energy and kindness is exactly what we need to bring some balance back to the world.

Karl’s essay uplifted my mood with the very first sentence “Matiere Primiere Neroli Oranger is a citrus lover’s delight…” It made me smile and feel thirsty all at the same time. I’m ready for sun and citrus. Neroli Oranger is just want I need. I live in the USA.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    Greetings everyone
Interesting cultural introduction with the Year of the Rabbit, I like learning new things even I’m not exactly a zodiac believer. What I do believe in is rational actions like managing finances, self healing, and peaceful relationships.
    1. Matière Premiere level of growth is remarkable, from a relatively new brand , to dozens points of sale all over the world , job well done .In Paris you can find them at Printemps and even at Galeries Lafayette Champs-Elysées .
Neroli Oranger is linear , perfect for the Summer fragrance , and the quality is awesome. I like how the fruits are sharp, and do last.
    2. Parfums L’Ame Du Bois Scents of Wood Cedre Mineral by Celine Barel
Quality is through the roof, but obtaining any Scents of Wood fragrance, if you live outside of US and Canada, is at the time being really hard. Their subscription policy i find strange. Plum in Cognac is awesome, Wood Cedre Mineral sounds good too.
    3. Ramon Monegal Ocean Oud
    -may be a challenge-
Quite an understatement , Mr Topham is very much found of Ocean Oud, but like he said it himself, the ocean waters are too ruff for my taste.
Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger I’d enjoy the most
Thank you , American living in Paris France

I loved reading Karl’s essay and Rachel’s introduction to the Lunar New Year 2023. Rachel’s intro focused on the Chinese new Year which rotates and focuses on a different animal each year that represents different things. “Culturally, in Asia, traditionally the Year of the Rabbit is associated with (and represents) peaceful and patient energy (chi). The water element especially stresses wisdom and being able to canter and trust one’s inner instincts. Lunar New Year 2023 will be a good year for everyone to focus on self-healing, building peaceful relationships, diplomacy, and building professional bridges. I loved learning more about The Lunar New Year 2023 (aka Chinese New Year), starts from January 22nd, 2023, ending on February 9th, 2024. Karl picked amazing fragrances to bring in the Lunar New Year. Neroli Oranger is bright and fresh Ocean Oud sounds like an amazing. If I win I will choose Neroli Oranger. I am from the USA.

  • The way Karl’s essay and Rachel’s intro were perfect together for this article. With the year of the rabbit set to bring peaceful and patient energy I believe Karl’s description of these scents emulate these traits perfectly.

If chosen I would like the bottle Neroli Oranger

    I live in Dallas, TX

Lovely article! What appeals to me about Rachel’s introduction is learning that the water element of the year of the rabbit promotes self healing and trusting oneself, something we could all use a little more of in this new year. What appeals to me about Karl’s essay is learning that Ramon Monegal’s Ocean Oud features the clash as well as the balance and coexistence between oud wood and sea water. These are two scents that I definitely don’t associate together, and I would be very interested in seeing how they fit together in a fragrance created by a perfumer I respect as much as Ramon Monegal. If I were to win I would definitely want to try Ramon Monegal’s Ocean Oud, although I would be very happy with Neroli Oranger as a second choice. I live in the US.

  • I loved the correlation made of this being a mark of self-focus & new beginnings. I am a huge fan of Aurelien’s work with Matiere Premiere, in fact Neroli Oranger was one of my favorites when sampling the line, however I could use some a kick-start to harness energy for life’s challenges with a bottle of Ocean Oud!

  • Scents of Wood always intrigues me and this sounds nice! I thought the Matière Premiere Neroli Oranger sounded perfect for the shoulder season into Spring, so I’d choose that. In US.
