Goutal Paris Un Matin d’Orage Review (Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen) + Japanese Garden after a Thunderstorm Draw

Goutal Paris Un Matin d'Orage review

It is often said that when  Mother Nature is upset, she shows its temper though bringing on a storm. Its cries of anger are heard through the violent commotion of thunder, and the raindrops are its tears. The green breath of humidity that follows after is unmatched; it serves as a reminder of just how beautiful and rich the scent of the world surrounds us.

Composed in 2009 by Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen, Goutal Paris Un Matin d’Orage is a marriage of sensual magnolia and lush gardenia, surrounded by aromatic lemon trees and solar tuberose. Its rich aroma is so delicate and powerful at once; it feels like bathing in the golden rays of morning sunshine, caressing one’s skin with all its warmth. Inspired by a Japanese garden after a thunderstorm, Un Matin d’Orage is a fragrance that encompasses all the abundant aromas of lush flora after the storm. It’s as if a garden was awakening from a restless sleep, and all its flowers exhaled their beauty into the air at once.  An avid nature lover, Annick Goutal held a particular fascination for white flowers… Goutal Paris Un Matin d’Orage represents not one but a whole bouquet of white florals in one glorious fragrance, described by Camille as a celebration of the things Annick adored. They delighted her with their joyous scents and their delicate milky white petals. Un Matin d’Orage is a soothing naturalist canvas; each flower plays a role of a pastel shade of pink, soft yellow, teal green, and ivory. A colorful symphony played by Mother Nature herself after an exhilarating night of battle, the morning is full of stillness that arrives after the storm has passed.

As the air becomes gradually warmer, the damp smell of rain-soaked earth mingles with the leaves’ crisp, vegetal aroma. Tropical nuances of champaca are spiced up by deep sensual myrrh that grounds the whole fragrance.  The composition rests on creamy guaiac wood that serves as its centering and grounding base. Inhaling Un Matin d’Orage feels like witnessing a moment that isn’t meant for anyone to see. I picture nature as a beautiful woman, stepping out of the river after a morning swim, her hair is damp, and the water drops on her skin are glistering in the sun. You feel as if you are invading Mother Nature’s privacy by witnessing this candid moment, greedily inhaling its sweet scent.  It will be gone soon, and all you have left is a memory. Perhaps it was just a fantasy after all.

Notes: green notes, magnolia, tuberose, vanilla, guaiac wood, myrrh

  • I love the idea of after the thunderstorm and I can picture the lady after her morning swim. Invading nature’s privacy indeed. I habe Grand Amour and wish La Violette would be brought back. NY state. Thank you for the draw.

  • Nice review! I like how you described the notes and I’m even more excited for fall now. Thanks for the draw! From Indianapolis.

  • Un Matin D’Orage is absolutely one of Annick Goutal’s most beautiful creations, and I am so appreciative for this excellent review that gives it the attention and credit it deserves! I really love Olya’s comparison to “witnessing a moment that isn’t meant for anyone to see” – I think this artfully describes the close but intense and complex beauty of this fragrance. Thank you for this generous draw!

  • It seems from the review that Goutal Paris Un Matin D’Orage is a fruity-floral composition that ends on woody notes. I welcome the inclusion of guaiac wood note as I enjoy it. I have many fragrances from Goutal and my fav. is Sables. I am in US

  • The green breath of humidity that follows a storm mixed with lush white florals sounds amazing. This would be my first Goutal scent.

  • I loved the description of the fragrance as that of a woman stepping out of the water – just beautiful! I love a number of Goutal fragrances, especially the incomparable Ninfeo Mio, but white florals are my favorite fragrance category. I’m in the USA. Thanks so much for this wonderful draw!

  • I love how Olya describes Un Matin D’Orage as a moment that isn’t meant for anyone to see. It sounds beautiful. My favorite Annick Goutal fragrances are Ambre Fetiche, Myrrhe Ardente, Nuit et Confidences, and Rose Pompon. Thank you for the giveaway.

  • There’s nothing like the scent of a garden after an intense rainfall. Olya reminded me of how much its appreciated. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • Thank you Olya for allowing me to witness (blush) mother nature at her most intimate of moments. Love the analogy. Very thoughtful and accommodating to my senses. This is my first introduction to this fragrance house. Thank you for the intro. USA

  • Olya gave a great mental picture of what this fragrance smells like. When she called it a colorful symphony played by Mother Nature herself, I immediately thought Un Matin D’Orage must be seamlessly blended.

I haven’t tried Goutal fragrances before. Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA

  • Olya’s description is poetic and I want to witness that private moment! I have not tried any Goutal fragrances, this looks like a great one to start with. I am in the US.

“It’s as if a garden was awakening from a restless sleep, and all its flowers exhaled their beauty into the air at once.” This line right here is the highlight! I was actually jaw dropped when I read this line, for me this is very poetic and artistic, damn it is just a beautiful use of words. I really enjoyed the review, I was also excited to see my favorite floral tuberose plus my favorite note vanilla in one. I hope to smell this fragrance one day..
Thank you for the amazing review (and that line) Olya 😀

I’m in love with the image of a Japanese garden after a thunderstorm. Particularly because I grew up in a part of the country where thunderstorms were frequent, and now I live in a place where they happen extremely rarely. I’d love to get a little thunderstorm back in my life. I’ve tried some Goutal before – Petite Cherie, Le Chevrefeuille are two that I own. I’m in the USA.

Actually one of my favorite things about this review are Olyas photos, especially that first one.
I am a terrible photographer, so I love staring at striking photos like that first one.
I’m fact I’ve gone into a Peter Lik and just stood there for an hour staring.

What interested me about the fragrance is that Olya mentioned a Solar Tuberose.
I actually really enjoy tuberose so I’d love to smell what a solar tuberose would smell like.

Unfortunately, I have never sampled anything from this house.
    I live in Houston

  • A bouquet of white flowers smelled all at once! This sounds wonderful with green notes and sandalwood. I haven’t tried Goutal before and would love to. NC USA

  • I’m not entering the draw, as I’m not in America, but I just want to comment on such a beautiful review! “Inhaling Un Matin d’Orage feels like witnessing a moment that isn’t meant for anyone to see” I understand that feeling perfectly and live for those evocative moments! I must try a sample of this perfume.

  • A green-centric floral fragrance always reminds me of spring and the promise of new beginnings. The inspiration of a Japanese garden after a thunderstorm is very evocative. I can sense what it smells like based on description alone. My favorite Goutal is Eau de Ciel. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I’m a big fan on Songes and this one sounds delightful. I love the line about “invading Mother Nature’s privacy” and all of those white flowers would be a joy to smell at once. Thank you for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • I really loved the beautiful description that Olya gave of Goutal Paris Un Matin d’Orage I her review. And I especially liked the lush green character and smells of a Japanese garden after a rainstorm in describing the perfume. Thanks for a lovely review of Goutal Paris Un Matin d’Orage and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Thank you Olya for a wonderfully written and evocative description of the fragrance. From reading your review, images of nymphs playing around by a mountain stream kept popping in my head 🙂 I like Eau d’Hadrien EDT which so far is my only experience from the house but it sounds like that will change soon. Thank you Europerfumes for the generous draw. I’m in USA

I really appreciated Olya’s artistically-written thoughts on this fragrance: “Un Matin d’Orage is a soothing naturalist canvas; each flower plays a role of a pastel shade of pink, soft yellow, teal green, and ivory. A colorful symphony played by Mother Nature herself after an exhilarating night of battle, the morning is full of stillness that arrives after the storm has passed.” This fragrance sounds unique due to the inspiration.

I have not yet had the pleasure of trying a Goutal fragrance.

  • Olya! ❤️ You had me at “Japanese Garden after a Thunderstorm.” ❤️ It’s been a busy few days, but I wanted to dream about this one a bit before responding. Un Matin d’Orage! Yes, please! The name alone has me wanting to experience this fragrance. A Stormy Morning, A Morning of Storms, Storms of Morning….. what a gorgeous feeling. ❤️❤️❤️ Olya, you are exactly right; I am seeing & smelling all those rich aromas, that deep exhale of nature, right after a storm AND combined with the opening of morning. How gorgeous. I’ve lived in a couple tropical locations where dense & heavy morning rains can exhale in this particularly floral manner. Of course, anywhere can create such a lovely burst of nature. Goutal Paris has been on my list for a long time, but now I simply must get to know them better! Thank you for this marvelous review & opportunity! USA ❤️

  • It”s a natural fact that one of the secondary effects of a storm is the ozonically charged, “cleaned” air. With the inspiration as pristine as a japanese garden in this state, the “pastel” notes and champaca composed together over a bed of guaiac wood seems like a rare and special arrangement. I’ve tried Ambre Fetiche in the past and would love to experience Un Matin D’Orage.

  • Olya’s review of Goutal Un Matin d’Orage reminded me of a peaceful fall morning after a rainy night. Fall is the season of a new school year. I remember when the first rays of the rising sun shined through leaves, I rode through the lush gardens to the campus.
The combination of magnolia and gardenia, lemon trees and tuberose brings me back to those pure mornings. I miss the scent of rain-soaked earth, the sound of bird’s chirping, the glistening raindrops on the leaves. All helped me start my day energetically.
    Thanks Olya,

  • Wonderful review Olya! What I enjoyed most about the review was the imagery of interrupting Mother Nature in a private moment, invading her privacy as she unveils her whole glory for a brief, almost imagined moment of breathtaking beauty. It’s such an evocative description, and I desperately yearn to smell the fragrance that inspired such an interpretation!

I have tried a number of Annick Goutal fragrances before, including Eau d’Hadrien, Petite Chérie, Ce Soir Ou Jamais, Grand Amour, and my favorite, Rose Absolue. I live in the US.

  • This sounds like such a beautiful fragrance!

I unfortunately have not had the chance to smell any Goutal fragrances

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Lovely review, I really love the description especially the part that says “Un Matin d’Orage feels like witnessing a moment that isn’t meant for anyone to see” and continue with a few other words related to nature’s magic and wonders that somehow infers to me as the smell of a rainy day. Anyways I love to smell this perfume, sadly my post came a little too late. Commenting from Orlando, USA
