“My love affair with natural tobacco leaf as a fragrance note is no secret. Neither is my interest in classic literature and history. These all came together after rereading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island for the first time since I was a kid. I put myself into the story and imagined what it would be like to greet the sunrise on a humid summer morning on the deck of a fully masted ship moored near a tropical shoreline. Bright citrus, tropical fruits and spices from traders mixing with the ever present rum and tobacco leaf. The aroma of florals are carried on a light breeze leading in to a warm, woodsy and slightly sweet finish. As I researched a bit more about Robert Louis Stevenson an I found that he spent his last years in Samoa where he left an indelible impression on the locals who also impacted his life in many ways. The name Tusitala means “teller of tales” in the Samoan language and was attributed to Robert Louis Stevenson posthumously by the people of Samoa.” -Chris Christiansen

Looking at the notes I get why Steven says this one smells bright and peach is front and center but it never goes overly sweet. This is for the peach lovers and based on the notes/house, I can see it leaning a bit more masculine. The bright opening is brought upon by the lime and bergamot and the 8 hour longevity is of course always a plus. The inspiration behind the fragrance as noted by Chris is clearly present as it does give a feeling of what is line to greet the sunrise on a humid summer morning (lime/bergamot) on the deck of a fully masted ship moored (orris/rum) near a tropical shoreline (tropical fruits/sandalwood). Inspiration in perfumery can come from almost anything, even re-reading your favorite children’s book. I’m located in the USA.

  • I love peach in fragrances, on my skin it creates a buttery scent which I think is amazing. Steven said it’s a sweet , I personally enjoy sweet fragrances.

  • As soon as I read the notes it was instant attraction. I can only imagine the scent by what Steven describes, but I can bet it will probably be a scent a multi-billionaire would wear on his day off. I hope I’m the lucky one finding out if I’m right!

  • Wow this must smell amazing. Rum, tobacco and peach(love fruit notes) has to be a great combination of notes. Cant wait to smell this beauty. I watch almost all of Steve’s videos because of his knowlegde of perfumery and from his discription it sounds like something i would enjoy. I live in North New Jersey

The information and detail is unprecedented for me with Redolessence content. I am officially enamored. This fragrance sounds lovely for my husband. Even if I don’t win, I may try a sample on Scent Splits (another great recommendation by you) to see gow it works for him (and me ) Thank you for everything!!

  • Green peach? Tobacco leaf? Citrus and tropical fruits? Cardamom and tonka bean? ORRIS? What a symphony!

Through both Chris’ intro and Steven’s review, I’m ready to go on an adventure with this scent. I love that Chris has an affinity with tobacco leaf, as I feel it’s one of the more misunderstood notes in fragrance. Also the tribute to Samoa and its people is beautiful.

Steven’s review was helpful because I might have expected a brighter, citrusy and lightly spiced fragrance just from the notes, but a peachy boozy rum fragrance sounds like it’ll give me the vacation I so sorely need even when I can’t actually get away. Stoked to give this a sniff one day!

Good evening from Brooklyn, NY 🙂

  • Matthew Melton says:

Peach is great all around scent going to be a great one to add to anyone’s arsenal!

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Keep hearing great things about this fragrance. Inspired by a book that Chris read is super interesting. It goes to show you never know where the inspiration of a fragrance can come from these days.

The combo of Peach & Rum sounds amazing. What got my attention was Steven’s comment on the opening being a tropical fruity explosion. An addictive sugary peach composition, this has my mouth watering. Thanks Steven haha.

I don’t have any peach forward fragrances in my collection so I’m definitely interested in trying this one out.

  • I’ve been hearing a lot about this house lately, and it sounds like I need to start exploring their offerings. Tusitala sounds quite nice. I love the Treasure Island inspiration and the use of tobacco leaf mentioned in the introduction. Steven said that the peach and rum really come through, which sounds delicious. He said it was wonderfully fruity and sweet, things which I certainly like. It seems like this is quite a peach filled year for me. Sarah Baker and Broken Anatomy both have new peachy scents, and I just discovered a classic peach scent from Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier. I would love to add this one to the lineup. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • This is a really interesting take on a tobacco leaf scent. I’m familiar with autumnal notes like dried fruit, hay or cognac used with tobacco. Tusitala’s nod to the caribbean pirates of Treasure Island combining tobacco leaf with rum, lime, tropical fruits and spicy green notes is quite different. Steve mentioned that the fruit and rum are prominent. MD, USA.

  • Treasure Island is a fun theme for a fragrance, and I like how Christiansen sets the scene, and how Kuczinkski interpreted it with TUSITALA. The rum, tobacco, florals, fruit, and fresh air in the notes list call to mind trading ships off a tropical coast, without the aquatic vibe this kind of fragrance would usually include. Steven pointed out TUSITALA revolves around the boozy, overripe peach, which I wouldn’t have expected. He also mentioned the citrus and fruit blend isn’t particularly tropical and the waxy orris contributes some interesting texture. Sounds like a fun wear.

  • The written intro taught me what the name Tusitala meant while the video went into detail re the complexity of the notes. US

Mr. Christiansen’s story about Robert Louis Stevenson’s life was really interesting. It’s genius of him to try to capture that entire scene in this fragrance. Steven’s glowing review makes this offering all the more intriguing. I’m not usually into tropical scents but what gets my attention is the inclusion of the rum and tobacco notes. Would like to have this as part of my collection. Appreciate the giveaway opportunity. Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • David Furman says:

The name is catchy and it’s meaning gives it a background making you wonder. Hearing this opens up tropical is a relief. I thought it would be more of a rum and dry tobacco essence. According to Steven the peach opening balances out and it doesn’t stay tropical. This seems complex and charming and would make a great addition to my collection. From Jacksonville, NC.

When I was a kid, “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson was one of my favorite books. I enjoyed finding out that Gentleman’s Nod’s owner Chris Christiansen found inspiration in Robert Lous Stevenson and his time living in Samoa for TUSITALA. I enjoyed watching Steven’s video review. Peach is a note that I really like in fragrances. I also like bright citrus openings in fragrances. I also can’t resist a rum note!
