Every time Francesca Bianchi releases a new scent, it’s like an invitation to dive into an alternate universe – one where each fragrance comes with its own rich backstory and intricate lore. It’s no secret that I adored Encounters, her play on iris and oud that resulted in a hedonistic, complex fragrance I’ve worn religiously over the past year, alongside Byzantine Amber. I tried not to let myself be too influenced by the visuals Francesca shared for Voluptuous Oud before actually experiencing it (yes, I’m that kind of person who always avoids trailers and spoilers, wanting my expectations to form purely in the moment). But even so, I had a sense we were in for something completely different – a much brighter take on the beloved oud note.

Let’s read Francesca, in her words, about this scent: “A rich, seductive, and absolutely lustful interpretation of Oud: I wanted to offer a warm and comforting experience, but with the dirty and animalic intensity of Oud. It is a fragrance that once again expresses my obsession with human intimacy and the experience of it: the infinite sweetness of bodily closeness, the search for the animal aspect in human beings.”

And the second I tried it, I knew my hunch was right – this wasn’t the dark, introspective oud that broods menacingly in the shadows. Instead, it was oud with an unexpected twist: bright, sweet and somehow… delightfully nostalgic. And if the synthwave aesthetics of the late 80s – early 90s had a smell, Voluptuous Oud would be it – as it lights up all the senses with that electrifying retro charm, pulsing with color, an upbeat rhythm, and a deliciously unapologetic dose of hedonistic abundance. It stretches right to the edge of “too much” but never crosses it – keeping everything balanced in a way that feels profoundly and satisfyingly indulgent.

Picture a night out in the big city, somewhere in the early 90s. First, an early drink at a dimly lit pub, with neon lights casting their glow in the dark and reflecting in your fluorescent Cointreau cocktail, adorned with the obligatory candied orange peel. Then, the rush to the cinema – the line, the tickets, the hallways filled with the buttery-salty-sweet scent of caramel popcorn, flickering lights, and the thrill of easy-going horror movies with just the right hint of playful suspense. You feel the stretch of your tights, the sturdy weight of your lace-up long Doc Martens, the slightly scratchy texture of your floral dress, the velvet choker hugging your neck and, in the air, there’s a waft of plums – someone must have gone wild with the Poison bottle… Afterward, there’s a stop at your favourite restaurant for that exotic Middle Eastern dessert everyone at the office raved about last week.

The aesthetic of the late 80s was all big hair and bold, colourful makeup, with dark layers mingling with vibrant frilly neon looks—and overall, a raw sensuality that felt refreshingly “natural.” The perfect backdrop for the dazzle and razzle of an era marked by unapologetic abundance and a certain innocence, even in its excess. Seen back, wearing the rose-coloured glasses of nostalgia, it was a time when emotions felt technicolour, with clear boundaries inviting you to color as bright, bold, and loud as you wanted—so long as you (kinda’) stayed within the lines. It was an unapologetic, vibrant, and somehow liberated time – and for me, Voluptuous Oud captures that spirit with a decadent twist.

Wearing Francesca Bianchi Voluptuous Oud made me feel like I was playing some spinoff of D&D: Oud Dungeons & Caramel Dragons. The start is uncharacteristically bright and optimistic (for Bianchi) with mandarins and citrus tones. Soon, a juicy, ripe purple plum unfolds in all its glory, infusing the fragrance with a plush, suede-like texture from heliotrope, soft and comforting, mouth-wateringly delicious, and undeniably sensual. In comes the oud, stripped of all its barnyard facets but always keeping its animalic claws and his leather jacket on. A salty-sweet caramel rounds it out, creamy, buttery, and irresistibly gourmand – just imagine a slice of honeyed knafeh, served with a side of sweet plum liqueur. Salty-sweet but delicately smoky, roundly plummy yet velvety plush, nostalgic but bright-eyed, with a leathery snap that gives it just enough of a kinky wink – this is an Oud that is indeed voluptuous.

Bordering on a gourmand, but with enough depth to keep it firmly between the lines of her aesthetic, Francesca Bianchi Voluptuous Oud is an airy oud that is friendly enough to wear even for beginners yet fun enough for hardcore niche aficionados to enjoy.

  • I’m totally hooked on the idea of a bright, nostalgic oud with synthwave vibes. Nicoleta’s review makes it sound like Voluptuous Oud is the perfect throwback to the neon 80s, but with this decadent twist of oud and caramel. Love how Francesca Bianchi went for something bold and sensual without going too heavy. I need this in my collection for sure!

  • The me decade. Bright light and big cities. A perfume that pays homage to a period of unapologetic materialism, consumerism, bold fashion and makeup. What can’t you say about the decade where money never sleeps, and a certain kind of hedonism ran supreme. A perfume that embodies and captures the vibrantness, fun and optimism of the period with a modern take is something I definitely need to try.

  • It looks like this one has it all as – gourmand, but with enough depth, an airy oud that is friendly enough to wear even for beginners yet fun enough for hardcore niche aficionados to enjoy.

    Thank you! Europe

  • It’s that time of year to break out the odds and animalic scents.

This will definitely be a blind buy (unless I am lucky enough to be selected).
Already thinking about my wife wearing this on our trip to New York.

  • How gorgeous Voluptuous Oud sounds!
I have always struggled with ouds a little bit, I really want to love them, but somehow the “barn” effect is always present and overwhelming for me, especially in the more niche area of fragrances. So the fact Nicoleta says that this is safe enough for beginners, as well as the presence of an array of accompanying notes that I really love (citrus in the opening, plum and especially the cozy, powdery and nostalgic heliotrope), make me hope that I might finally find an oud to fall in love with!
The mention of 80’s aesthetics and everything they bring is also a tempting promise to me: I personally am very much into the music of the 80’s, namely rock, so if Ms. Bianchi also kind of gave it an 80’s edginess to this fragrance, together with the flamboyancy and the playfulness, that’s a recipe for success!

  • The combo of plum, caramel, and oud sounds like this rich, hedonistic blend that somehow stays bright and upbeat. I’m getting visions of late-night neon lights, leather jackets, and smoky, sweet notes that wrap around you like a memory. I love fragrances that play with contrasts, and this seems like such a cool take on the classic oud.

  • This looks like a wonderful gourmand that’s sweet oudy, and something that will help me branch out from my usual scents. I can’t wait to try this one.

I have tried quite a few of the Francesca Bianchi offerings and Nicoleta was right that they tend to lean on the heavy and oudy side. I heard the commotion online when this one was announced, many calling it a gourmand for the house, and I rejoiced. Caramel and plum are 2 of my favorite notes so to have them both on this fragrance is a dream come true. The name is peculiar as well having you wonder if the Oud is in fact voluptuous, and it is, but not in the way you imagine it to be. It’s round, creamy, butter and with a subtle sweetness that anyone can appreciate. I can already predict this will be a hit for the house. I’m located in the US.

  • Yet another scent if contrasts and apoeal from the grand dame of modern perfumery herself ! I love Nicoleta’s analogies, this scent seems to call my name in every way.

Thanks for the draw. Based in Europe

  • On my wishlist it goes! As a fan of her creativity, I’m always drawn to the uniqueness of Francesca’s perfume. I’m ready for a bright sweet oud. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

  • Nicoleta’s review of Francesca Bianchi’s Voluptuous Oud is quite captivating! What stands out to me is the way she describes the fragrance’s rich and complex layers. She mentions notes of oud, spices, and florals that create a deep, luxurious scent profile. Additionally, the synthwave vibes she references add a unique, modern twist to the classic oud fragrance, making it sound both nostalgic and futuristic and that’s something that really sparked my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland EU.

  • Reading this, I can literally picture a scene straight out of the early 90s – leather jackets, Doc Martens, neon cocktails, and this playful, edgy vibe. The mix of smoky oud, juicy plum, and caramel sounds amazing and so unique. It’s like Francesca’s somehow bottled that whole era in a fragrance! If it’s as complex and sensual as Nicoleta says, I need to experience it for myself.

Oh my does this fragrance speak to me with its divine notes. I’m enthralled. Thank you for this eye-opening review, I want to snag a bottle so quick. As someone who appreciates oud, but likes it gourmand, I’m completely head over heels for this concept. I live in Oregon.

  • Oooh this sounds good! I love Francesca Bianchi’s take on warm, intimate animalics, and I’d really like to try Volutuous Oud. Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  • Whenever I read a description of a Francesca Bianchi fragrance, I want to try it. But though the house is on my long list of discovery sets I hope to grab, I have yet to get my nose on any of her perfumes. Nicoleta makes this one sound particularly wonderful. Though I like the note breakdown, it’s Nicoleta’s nostalgic evocation of the late ’80s and early ’90s (really the decade of my 20s) that got to me. If a fragrance can evoke memories of those times, I’m intrigued. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • The visuals make me think of the film Drive. The nostalgia of this review reminds me of being a wildcard teen in the 90’s allowed to run amok in San Francisco and Berkeley by bus, quarters jangling in our pockets because pay phones were our lifelines if need be. Films at the Kabuki, pillaging the racks at Wasteland and Mars Vintage (RIP)… Desperately wanting to live inside Empire Records.

As Nicoleta puts it “.. as it lights up all the senses with that electrifying retro charm, pulsing with color, an upbeat rhythm, and a deliciously unapologetic dose of hedonistic abundance. It stretches right to the edge of “too much” but never crosses it..”

I want to experience that sensorially and revisit it nostalgically.

  • I never thought of oud as ‘bright’ or ‘nostalgic,’ but this sounds so fresh and different! Nicoleta’s review makes me imagine Voluptuous Oud as an adventure—halfway between a fantasy quest and a night out in a neon-lit city. The notes of plum, leather, and caramel with that synthwave inspiration sound like a wild mix, but I trust Francesca Bianchi to make it work.

  • A light, sparkling and nostalgic oud, loud, chaotic, but without crossing the “too much” linea make me very curious. I think I would love this perfume

Having explored all the wildly exubérant and overtly hedonistic arenas of the early 80’s, here is the perfume I crave. First sniff in Cannes had me hooked up to its sensuality and downright no holds barred gourmand vibe. Thank you Nicoleta for such a great review, its got me wanting more. I live in SW France.

  • I am looking forward to trying Voluptuous Oud! Until now, everything I have tested and worn from Francesca Bianchi, has been a hit! Very intereting and sensual creations!
Good luck to everyone and thank you. I am based in the EU

I’m so curious about how bright this oud could be and how this fragrance could transport us back in time, in the fabolous neon-lighted voluptous places Nicoleta described for us.
I hope I could add this marvel to my Francesca Bianchi collection <3

  • I eagerly awaited Francesca Bianchi’s Voluptuous Oud, and I can honestly say the fragrance surprised me in the best way possible. I love this bold, complex interpretation of oud notes, woven in an unexpectedly bright and effervescent way. As the review mentions, this perfume has a much more open and vibrant take on the usually opulent and dark oud note, making it a true innovation in Francesca’s collection. It’s fascinating how she managed to blend a synthwave aesthetic with woody and oriental notes – a perfect contrast between past and present, nostalgia and modernity.

What I love most is precisely this fragrance’s ability to evoke a world of complete escapism. It feels like stepping into Francesca Bianchi’s narrative, an alternate universe where the interplay of scent notes opens up a vibrant, mysterious world. This balance between the familiar and the unexpected is what makes the fragrance so captivating for me, and I agree with the review author: Voluptuous Oud deserves recognition for transforming oud into a purely sensory, utterly unique experience.

Born in the 70’s & raised in the 80’s the description of this fragrance took me back. The part that caught my attention was the caramel popcorn. In Nicoleta’s words…”A salty-sweet caramel rounds it out, creamy, buttery, and irresistibly gourmand”. Sounds great for this holiday season.

  • Nicoleta’s review of Francesca Bianchi’s Voluptuous Oud it’s tasty as always! I read it twice, in fact any perfume that Nicoleta describes makes me want to look for it, to try it! I have never been disappointed, most of the time I left with the purchase of the perfume! Kiss from Romania

  • This review brilliantly captures the nostalgic, almost cinematic allure of Voluptuous Oud by Francesca Bianchi. The way Nicoleta describes its mix of retro synthwave aesthetics and lush, indulgent scent notes instantly transported me to another era. The balance between oud’s depth and caramel’s sweetness sounds like it brings an accessible yet complex charm that’s rare in oud fragrances. Nicoleta’s attention to how it mirrors the unapologetic, vibrant style of the late ’80s is fascinating, and I’m eager to experience how this scent marries brightness with the grounded intensity of leather and oud.

  • Byzantine Amber was really a stunner and I am very excited about trying this new fragrance from F. Bianchi. I was scared at first it would be yet another oud rose combo (not my favorite as you can guess) but plum and oud… Mmmh that sounds really interesting!
I’m also curious about this synthwave sort of aesthetic Nicoleta refers to and how it works in an oud type of fragrance…
    Greetings from Germany!

  • Voluptuous Oud sounds interesting with a gourmand twist. I’m new to Oud go to hear it’s perfect for beginners. Love the different moods it captures. Perfect for this time of year. Thank you for this chance USA

  • I was only a kid in the 80’s but even I agree with Nicoleta saying ” It was an unapologetic, vibrant, and somehow liberated time”.That exactly how I look back at it, and long for everything which I can associate with that time. Oud with salty caramel sounds delightful.

Nocoleta’s review was superb. I am a fan of Francesca Bianchi’s animalic work and I am glad she is finally doing the oud note which is tricky. From the review I found out how Francesca worked with oud and It seems she did an excellent job. Bold/unapologitic and muxing oud/caramel yet light is where it’s at. Thank you..

  • Thank you, Nicoleta for this interesting review. Francesca Bianchi’s creations are always such immersive experiences, and Voluptuous Oud is no exception! Her ability to combine depth, sensuality, and unexpected twists is remarkable. I love how her fragrances evoke entire worlds, inviting us to explore scents with layers of complexity and personality. Encounters have been a favorite of mine, especially for its unique take on iris and oud, and I’m excited by the prospect of a lighter, more playful oud in Voluptuous Oud. Francesca’s approach to oud with a touch of sweetness and nostalgia sounds perfect for capturing those moments of unapologetic indulgence. I can’t wait to try it and experience that “retro charm” everyone’s describing! Salute from Paris 😉

  • WeAreScentient says:

AH love this take of Voluptuous Oud, definitely one I need to get my cyberpunk 808 & synth loving nose on. Plum & a kinky wink sounds like me 🙂

  • I never really considered oud a lustful or sensual note but rather a solid anchor for other notes. Francesca Bianchi’s envisioning oud as an 80s techno-pop gourmand seems quite innovative. The citrus and plum add some brightness while the leather and vetiver serve as an earthy base. The caramel and tolu balsam add that spicy gourmand note. An interesting take on oud. MD, USA.

  • This sounds interesting, which is saying something in a market that remains saturated with ouds. It’s refreshing to see it paired with things other than rose, raspberry, and incense. I like the sound of the plum in this. Nicoleta stated that the plum gives it a fruity plushness, along with a suede-like nuance. That just sounds so good. I’ve heard from others that this one stands out from Bianchi’s others, and that her core DNA isn’t near as noticeable in this one. I’d love to check it out and see how she has expanded her pallet. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • The concept of a gourmand oud is not one I have run into before. The caramel facets mixed wiht leathery oud after the onset of fruits sounds very daring. Might be challenging to wear, but hearing that this is fairly light and airy does help! I live in the US.
