Our choices for the best fragrances to ring in the New Year 2023 are olfactory reminders to celebrate each day anew, reset, recharge and embrace new beginnings –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief and Steven Gavrielatos, Video Content Editor
Navitus Parfums Champagne Royale (Julien Rasquinet) is the scented equivalent of a Kir Royale (champagne and Chambord©) and a great perfume to ring in 2023. It opens bright and effervescent with a burst of aldehydes and Italian citrus fruits. A plum note in the heart adds sweetness and cheerful warmth to the cedarwood base. -Michelyn and Steven
Initio Parfums Prives Rehab: Rehab ticks all the boxes as one of the best fragrances for the New Year 2023. To my nose it’s a clean, fresh, somewhat spicy Fougere-like fragrance. Notes include lavender, bergamot, and sandalwood which are all known for their calming and soothing properties. And then there’s the Hedione©…Hedione was originally used by fragrance company Firminich© in the early 1960s as an alternative to jasmine absolute and was first used in perfumery by Edmond Roudnitska in 1966 when he created Dior’s Eau Sauvage. In 2015, the science journal NeuroImage published a study in which Hedione was found to stimulate the limbic areas of the brain in women which are responsible for the release of pheromones. After all, Rehab is part of the Hedonist collection. -Michelyn
Etat Libre D’Orange The Ghost in A Shell (Julie Masse): Founder and creative director of Etat Libre D’Orange, Etienne de Swardt shares the background on how the perfume’s idea came into existence: “It is a night of pale moonlight, a night toward the end of the 20th century, a night when the old world is ending and the new one is beginning. The Ghost in The Shell takes its name from the cyber punk Manga series, and may seem like an unlikely choice as one of our favorite fragrances for the New Year 2023. It’s a bright and breezy skin scent that opens with a pop of yuzu and soft jasmine with a blend of cutting-edge synthetics adding a musky and milky edge. It is surprisingly easy to wear, calming, luminous and as the name suggests familiar but futuristic. Notes: Aqual™ Yuzu HE, Hexyl Acetate (MANE Biotech); Jasmin absolute, Mugane™, Milky Skin Accord; Moss Accord, Vinyl Gaiacol (MANE Biotech), Orcanox™-Michelyn
