“what we create may save us.” -Cranes in August, by Kim Addonizio

There are two kinds of people: those who look down into the dirt, and those who look up into the skies. (There is no value judgement after this sentence, nor is it my intention to hold the two buckets as firm; but every so often, when we succumb to our own thoughts or a very, very good conversation, isn’t it intriguing to say: “there are two kinds of people:…”?).

As I was saying, dear reader, there are two kinds of people: the ones looking into the detail of the material, and the ones dreaming the details of the abstract. We often switch sides, and often the line moves–but there are always, always (some) sides to it.

These days, forced to be terrestre, I’ve been looking up.

TOP: the sense of seasons, and a season for senses

In Siberia, cranes bear the sun and symbolize the fertile seasons; they carry hope and cyclicity, rebirth and new beginnings. Folktales throughout Russia but also the places where the migrating Siberian Crane stops for rest (Sicily, Iran) speak of it as a usher for the uninitiated, the otherworldly helper and mentor guiding terrestrials through miraculous adventuresFragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense opens with an unbearable feeling of life bursting at seams. All stages of life are present in one breath, apparent and blatant like a tropical tree laden with all stages of fruiting: impossibly verdant fat leaves, plush flowers ready for pollination, half-sunned tart fruit, overripe drupes and pepos.

The fertility, here, is unapologetic.

MIDDLE: the luck, the labor, and the labor-made luck

With cranes comes toil, and surreal efforts to simply exist as glorious as nature meant it; it’s not easy to be magical. It’s also not not easy, as cranes are so pure in concept, that nobody ever personified them in fables of old. Cranes have always been cranes and could never be anything else–so instead of trying to give them human features, many cultures adopted their features as way of improving our own existence, and calchiated the notion of a splendid bird with the symbol of what it takes to mimic it: repetition; absurdity; calm. In Korea, the auspicious crane dance has been performed in the Tongdosa Temple since the Silla Dynasty in the 600s; in Japan, good luck can be achieved by folding 1000 paper cranes.

Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense, too, feels fortuitous–the loving comes easily, entrancing like the promise of a wish fulfilled: irresistible but kind, it’s at once familiar, and embarrassingly pure. Hard to put in words the essence of an intrinsically generous smell, and very tempting to assign its warm heart to sheer luck–however, patient labour is clear in the minute attention to detail.

To me, it’s the fine balance between the fleshy, ripe white flowers and a creamy tone that rings clean- anything less would be 999 cranes, and anything more would be 1001.

BASE: the value of virtue

There’s something noble about the crane. It might be its self-assurance; its unhindered dedication to its young; its beauty; its freedom. It might be that it uninterruptedly flocked and danced and mated and circled the world, liberally exchanging mortality down below for months spent on the wing, indifferent to—and untouchable by— history. As a result, cranes are present in every aspect of human symbolism: heraldry (as per a legend spurred by Pliny the Elder); ceremonial decorations (as for Xhosa, in South Africa); dance and elevated fighting styles (as in Chinese kung fu, where the crane brings fluidity, nobility, and immortality).

Fragrance Du Bois Oud Jaune Intense sits on a base of exceptional mechanics where everything is outstretched and permanent in its glory, yet nothing stands out above the total—not the oud, not the vanilla, not the musk.

Just like there are no poems about the straight arrow of a crane’s neck, nor about the flock. Only the crane itself, and alone in all its splendor.

Official notes: top- monoi, ylang, watery fruit; middle: jasmine, orange blossom, white flowers; base- oud, vanilla, musk, lactone

Other perceived notes: clover & hay, coconut, melons, agave, slight salt, rambutan.

Special thanks go out to Cristian Marianciuc who gracefully took, curated, and supplied photos of his cranes for this article. You can find his glorious paper art on Instagram, at ©icarus.mid.air.

Gratitude to Fragrance du Bois as well, who most generously gifted me this wish list item. It is now one of my mates for life.

  • Interesting analogy with the cranes and superb pictures! I do not know any from this house, but would love to try them for I know some people that go bananas over these perfumes and I trust their taste in fragrances.
    Thank you!

  • Like every review that dana writes, this one as well is full of imagery and you have to read it twice, at least, to make sure you get every idea she puts in words. I like about this fragrance that it seems to be very equilibrated and each note is in harmony with the others. Perfection.
    I am in EU.

  • Greetings from Slovakia right now, still based and writing from the Czech Republic: no cranes here, just enjoying herds or storks here, never tried anything from the House but we obviously must after this poetic piece!

  • Dana says that Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense is a creamy floral composition that reveals all of its facets at once, though in stages. USA

  • Dana’s review of this fragrance was quite intriguing and very informative. She really knows her stuff when it comes to describing fragrances. The notes sound very well blended and beautiful. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

Looove Oud Jaune Intense – such a complex/summer frag. Big fan of FdB – Oud Vert and Oud Bleu are my top 2.
    Thanks for the giveaway

The thing that I am loving the most about these reviews is that I leave with a feeling, but no real idea about how the Fragrance would smell. Of course the notes tell you, but the reviews are so beautifully written that I fall in love with every fragrance.

Coming at you from the US. Texas.

  • I loved Dana’s review of this! The resemblance to the crane and self assurance along with the notes standing TOGETHER with none above one another… it fits so perfectly into what we need in the world today. Would be ecstatic to win this as the symbolism is touching and the fragrance sounds immaculate as well

  • dana, another absolutely splendid article, thank you so much.

Cristian – your art is utterly breathtaking, and as someone who adores origami and textile arts more than most, I’m thrilled to make your acquaintance here and to revel in your magnificent artistry. Three masters in their crafts in one review, now that is a treat!

To Nathalie and Fragrance du Bois, thank you so much for this phenomenal perfume, and also for the generosity of the draw.

It is always enriching to read an article that gives a bit of a cultural/cultural anthropology lesson with the review. Not only do I get to experience the perfume in my head, but I enrich myself with knowledge. The way you have broken down the perceived pyramid of the fragrance and aligned it with the cultural interpretations of the Crane are marvelous. It is truly a magical oiseau, and so appreciated across the world in so many contexts.

    I’m in the US.

  • haven’t tried anything from the brand. Im curious to try anything out as ive heard they use natural oud. The review was descriptive and entertaining. I live in Greece

  • The use of paper cranes & theres folds evolving like the fragrance was excellent. I’ve not tried this house yet, but this screams me, monoi is a favourite of mine! and the ghostly hay note sounds excellent.
    I’m in Dublin Ireland

  • I love how Dana brought two arts together. It makes me wonder whether the paper cranes reminded her of oud Jaune Intense or vice versa. Regardless, it is a lovely article.

Unfortunately Fragrance du Bois’ price range is out of my budget, but I did have a sample of Amber Intense which I’d love to purchase at some point.

  • I’ve tried this one in the Jovoy boutique once, and Dana’s review just reminded me how unique and good this one smells. I mean, white floral with oud, how often do you see that combo. The beginning smells so much like a fruit jello and it settles down so beautifully. Thank you for the opportunity of the giveaway. Normally I wish every participants good luck but I want to win this one so bad so, good luck to me hahaha.

  • Loved the photos of the crane sculptures, and the bottle, in this review by Dana. Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense seems to be a very well-balanced, clean, elegant perfume, similar to the cranes described and depicted in exceptional paper sculptures in this review. And a well-balanced base with oud and musk is going to be a winner. I haven’t tried Fragrance du Bois fragrances, yet. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I absolutely loved this fragrance described with every details. Never owned a FdB Perfume , but I’m very impressed of their work !
    I live in ALBANIA/ EUROPE x

  • I liked the story of the 1000 cranes — not one less, not one more. I haven’t tried anything from Fragrance du Bois so far. I am from Italy. (PS: lovely pictures!)

  • I like the structure of dana’s review, with interesting and distinct descriptions for the top, middle and base. The essence of an intrinsically generous smell sounds fabulous, I’d love to try it. Thanks for the introduction to this brand, I have not tried any Fragrance du Bois perfumes before. I live in the USA.

  • Dana’s vivid imagery brings the perfume to life! Her crane analogy and symbolism makes the perfume sound magical. Tried santal complet from Fragrance du Bois and it’s divine! I live in the UK.

  • I’m glad to know that after visiting their website, I found out that Fragrance du Bois uses Oud oil from sustainable sources, this is so important these days and I avoid an Oud unless the source is clearly traceable. I would love to try this one, the elevated and lifting orange blossom, vanilla, lactone notes appeal, with the deeply still and noble oud to anchor it all, somehow the elegant and noble crane in this article imagery suits these notes. Lovely. I’ve not tried an Fragrance du Bois perfume before, this one sounds gorgeous, and I’d like to try their Milano with Saffron, a very suitable note since Milan is in the North on Italy, the region of risotto and the delicate and delicious saffron risotto!

  • In these difficult times, the Dana s review reminds us to look up And there can be hope! Cristian Marianciuc’s works also help us to offer us a great perspective on Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune intense. Extraordinary escape, as usual!

    Hi there,
I really enjoyed Dana’s review. I’ve only got to test a little sample of Cannabis Intense from the house and I would loooove to have this bottle. Regards from Romania

  • Fantastic. I really enjoyed the photo of sculpture by Cristian Marianciuc! Gorgeous! I need to try Fragrance du Bois, I’ve been seeing bottles pop up in some groups I belong to and I am continually intrigued. The notes in this sound interesting but I am having a hard time imagining what it would smell like. In for the draw, from Canada! Thank you again for the give away!

  • Hi there from Transylvania, Romania!
It was a true delight to read Dana’s masterfully written analogy paired with Cristian’s stunning works of art! Chapeau guys!
I have two samples from Fragrance du Bois: Sahraa Oud and Heritage. Both are excellent fragrances!
Well, I guess it’s about time to start folding those 1000 paper cranes if I want to win this bottle…

  • I’m most struck by that this fragrance is Danu’s mate for life. Must be amazing. The paper art is beautiful. I like that not one note stands out above the others. I’ve heard good things about this fragrance. I have not had the opportunity to try. I was suggested to sample this line as I’m going to do a splurge for my upcoming milestone birthday. I’d love to try this! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Catalina Matei says:

The article is amazing. I don’t know anything about this house, but I will be more than happy to try this perfume.

  • Thank you for the article, dana!

I’ve tried Fragrance du Bois Oud Vert and Oud Bleu, and was really impressed by the quality of both perfumes and how subtly the oud supported the rest of the fragrance, rather than trampling it in an effort to proclaim itself.

Your description of the perfume as “irresistible but kind” is so lovely!

    In Canada.

  • I enjoying her’s expression of wonderful pictures selected in the article!

I wish this is my 1st win of Fragrance du Bois in my collection!!!

    Hong Kong here!

  • I absolutely adore Dana’s articles. She so poetic in her writing and describing fragrances. Her description of this scent made my heart sing as I love white florals and tropical scents – fine balance between the fleshy, ripe white flowers and a creamy tone that rings clean. I have had the change to sample oud a range intense from the line and it’s beautiful. Thank you for the generous giveaway. I’m based in the US.

  • I love the varied representations of cranes in different media. I had no idea they were so widespread in cultures across the world. Oud Jaune Intense sounds like a luxurious fragrance with the fleshy white flowers and creamy musk base. Intriguing review dana! I’ve not tried any Fragrance du Bois before. Commenting from USA.

dana bit off a lot with this essay, given the concept of the two kinds of people, the metaphor of cranes, the intercultural significance of the crane, and the fragrance itself. I liked the ambition of all the comparisons. I have never tried a Fragrance du Bois creation, but this certainly sounds worth a sniff. I am in the US, in North
    Carolina.

  • I thought that 1000 cranes analogy was brilliant. Balance indeed! From Siberia to the tropics, that’s a hellova fragrance journey. Fourth pic from the top says it all – hope I’m not the only one who noticed the symbolism – embarrassingly, yet not so embarrassingly pure. Ostensibly smoother than a babies bottom, it’d be nice to sample more from the brand. Oud Vert Intense is the only one that has chanced upon my senses. Here’s hoping for more. Ps, that’s what she said. Canada.

  • Naomi Sawyer says:

What gorgeous images, Dana! Such an opulent description. This sounds like an expertly blended fragrance- I hope to get to try it!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

What an interesting review with beautiful, other-worldly imagery. I just loved the idea of exploring a certain figure’s significance in different cultures and connecting that to the unique dualities present in this fragrance. Haven’t tried any of their scents yet! I have not been lucky enough to try any Fragrance Du Bois, that would be awesome.

  • Enjoyed this article. You can feel the review.
I’ve been wanting to try Fragrance du Bois. They seem like a Great House. I like how nothing really stands out in this fragrance. So a Balanced fragrance. Thanks, Ca

  • Great review, Dana. Binaries never hold, but do make for great conversations every once in a while. I’ve never tried this brand before. It’s on my list for sure. Sebastian put it in a beach frags video. Oud Jaune sounds wonderful. I’m crazy for white florals recently. I’m in the US.

  • Just to start off, thank you for this EXTREMELY generous draw. What I enjoyed about this review was how Dana was able to tie a crane metaphor to the actual fragrance (it was very well written). For the fragrance itself, I love the complexity and the dry down of oud, vanilla, and musk sounds gorgeous. I have never tried a Fragrance du Bois perfume before, but I have heard many wonderful things about the brand’s fragrances. Kind regards from IL, USA.

  • I want to start by saying thank you, for this amazing opportunity. I totally adore this house, i own a few masterpieces they have created, but my favorite (by far) is Oud Jaune Intense, wich i don’t own yet, so you may immagine how gorgeous would it be to be the lucky winner of this gem. Thank you, dana sandu for giving us this review and the chance to win it! Regards from Ro

Great review from Dana, i really liked the story of the cranes. “What we create may save us” , exquisite words and great images. I never tried anything from the house. I live in Romania. Thank you!

  • Erik van Os says:

I loved reading the review. The analogy with the cranes is very nice. For me cranes symbolize pure elegance and beauty. It’s always a spectacle when you see them in real or in beautiful nature documentaries I once saw a documentary about Japan (Hokkaido) and there is a place where the cranes come together in winter. The beauty of the snow and the white cranes was from another world. This combined with the beautiful description of the perfume, makes me very curious for this one!
Thanks for the great read and review!

  • Amazing article. Thank you Dana . I’ve smelt some fragrances from this house in Milano in a little perfume boutique , and I was fascinated. I hope I am lucky

  • This sounds like a complex fragrance. I like how the crane is used in this review as a symbol of perfection and balance. The photos of the crane sculpture help also creating this image of natural elegance.
I haven’t tried any Fragrance du Bois perfumes before.
    I live in Romania.

  • What I enjoyed most about dana’s review was her balance of whimsical word play and informative & insightful thoughts on this scent mingled together perfectly balanced.

It is always a joy to read.

I’ve only tried santal complet and oud bleu intense from them. They were both stunning.

    I’m from Ireland

  • So to sum up what Danu said , “…it’s the fine balance between the fleshy, ripe white flowers and a creamy tone that rings clean- anything less would be 999 cranes, and anything more would be 1001. How interesting to make this all about cranes. Many thanks to Danu for this review and many thanks also to Fragrance Du Bois for this amazing draw of Oud Jaune Intense. I’m in the USA

  • Love Dana’s description and the paper art interface with scent also, thanks for doing a worldwide draw! Down here in New Zealand don’t usually get a chance! Love to you all and keep letting us know about these amazing perfumes.

  • maryofsherwood says:

Dana’s review about Oud Jaune Intense is very artistic. The analogy of the perfume with the crane is very creative, the descriptions of the stages of the perfume are very vivid, I could almost smell the opening notes just by reading her description, without knowing exactly what they were. I have never tried Fragrance du Bois fragrances, but now I must go and try them. I am always looking for the perfect fragrance, who knows, maybe this is it! I am from Romania.

  • dana’s reviews are always ambiguous and full of lyricism and symbols – reading them it leaves you even more curious about a certain perfume and I really appreciate that she tries to give different meanings to what she writes about.
Reading so much about cranes really reminded me of a movie I saw an era back ago – The Cranes are Flying – equally poetic and sensible as this fragrance appears to be. I think that the fragrance would suit the main actress in the movie. Lovely, tragic and desperate at the same time.
I am from EU. Good luck to everyone!

  • The visual/olfactive analogy between cranes and the ethereal Oud Jaune is perfectly captured here ! Synergy at its finest. Thanks for the draw. Based in the EU

I discovered Dana a few months ago, without searching something concretely.
I enjoy all the articles she writes because she funny, smart and always has the proper words to explain anything about a perfume, even if you’re not a pro in the domain.
If we refer to this article, the pictures that comes with it, are just fabulous.
Until now I didn’t try the perfume from Fragrance du Bois.
    Greetings from Romania!

  • Anamaria Bianca Borz says:

A review full of colour, original as usual…I was looking down…this made me look up to the sky

  • Dana described almost poetically this fragrance. The emotions she expresses thru the words are no ordinary figures of speech – and I am very, very intrigued by that. I haven’t tried any Frangrance du Bois perfumes, but I have them on my wishlist for so long. ROMANIA

  • What I find remarkable about Dana’s article is the fact that despite English not being her first language, she writes more articulately than many native speakers.
I’d love to be considered to win this fragrance as I have been lusting after it since I saw a YouTuber sing it’s praises many moons ago. It’s a very steep blind buy unfortunately. I live in France (not near a boutique sadly!!)

  • justin.ungureanu says:

Dana always throws me in a pleasantly uncanny land where the abstract tends to take a physical form. Perfumes are a concrete representation of feelings and there is nothing new in that. They are the strange result of an alchemical equation where emotion and what nature gives us can be captured in a bottle that can embody one’s personal Proustian madeleine. What Dana did with words seems to me a backwards alchemical reaction: she made me feel the untouchable in order to make me want a splash of the physical.

  • I never knew that origami can be so intricate! This is the first time I discover – thanks to you – icarus.mid.air! If you, the master of sniffing al kind of fragrances- say that this is a mate for life, I am most surely bewildered! Maybe it’s because of the white flowers I do know you adore (stalker on YT :-)) For me is the pinch of salt from the composition that I truely need in my life. Don’t know if this is a way of my mind to tell me that I am dehydrated and I need salts quick or is the ~dor~ (for non romanian language speakers: dor is a word describing the feeling of missing someone, feeling incomplete and miserable without something/someone) for vacantion..and sea…and Greece…and goats..and olives…and lazyness. Never even sniffed these beauties because they are so out of my league, if you get what I mean 🙂 I live in Romania

  • I love those crane sculptures!
I too liked the analogy with cranes in human culture, and the description of the top, middle and base notes was nevertheless very clear.
I have only tried Sahraa Oud from this house. This one looks rather nice and lush as well.
    I am in France, EU.

  • What an interesting scent, I really love all the images and the interesting description is this review Dana. It makes the perfume come to life. It makes it all the more interesting and intriguing. Would really love to try this. Living in the Netherlands

  • Dana’s reviews are always so insightful, full of new information, symbols and also a very truthful personal touch. She has a talent in incorporating intellect into the description of a field that is otherwise very visceral. About the perfume itself, I found it most interesting that it’s bursting with life, light and movement. The images were breathtaking as well.
I am in Romania and have never tried this Fragrance du Bois before. Thanks!

  • Dana’s review was quite intense and pays tribute to a magnificent bird and it is interesting to see it paired to the different phases of Oud Jaune Intense. I’ve recently tried Fragrance du Bois’ Oud Vert Intense and like Dana, I was immediately drawn in and it is not letting go anytime soon. Thank you for the review and kind giveaway. I’m in USA

  • Dan Watkins says:

I just love how lyrical and beautifully abstract Dana’s review is here, as is usually the case – i’m also a big fan and avid watcher of her video reviews and I love the depth and desription she always goes into. Always leaves me searching for obscure and wonderful sounding bottles! This is no exception and although I do not have any exerience of the Fragrance du Bois collection as yet, I would love to experince and own this one – the notes alone sound wonderful, even more so with Dana as the voice! Dan, Wales (UK)

  • Man this review was a wild ride! I loved the parts about the crane and their actions and behaviors and how they are seen and then that being conveyed in the description of the fragrance! I’ve never tried any FDB fragrances but would love to. I live in North America in Pennsylvania!

  • i love the way dana talks about perfumes with so much passion , i watch her videos on youtube religiously, i didnt had the change to try fragrance du boise house , but i would like it alot, greetings from uk.

  • The crane is such an interesting and timeless symbol. I loved Dana’s take on it, and I loved the sculptures. I have not tried any Fragrane du Bois perfumes and I am in the United States.

  • Thank you Dana for providing us with so valuable and structured information about the crane symbolism, illustrated by such vivid pictures!
I never had the chance to discover any of the Fragrance du Bois perfumes, so I would be thrilled to get to know Oud Jaune Intense (I am an Oud fan, I love yellow as a color, and I am curious about the monoi – oud combination).
Thank you for the giveaway, and all my best from Canada where I live!

  • Dana’s review was so unusual and the artwork stunning. I explored more of fragrance du bois shades and I think the spicy bleu intense sounds wonderful too. I will look more into this company and try others from their line.
    USA

  • The pictures of the paper cranes complemented the review perfectly. What struck me was the following – “it’s not easy to be magical” – which is what perfumers have to contend with every time a scent is created. Here, the words of the review take flight, and I’m transported on a sunny, sky-ward journey. Sometimes, yellow is gold. I like their London Oud and I’m based in the US.

  • Dana, wow, such a gorgeous description of what must be a wonderful fragrance! i loved the different levels that you explored, and it sounds just wonderful! I have not tried any other Fragrance du Bois scents, and this one sounds just lovely. thank you for the review and the wonderful draw! I’m in the US.

  • The fotographies are amazing!!!!
It seems to be a joyful scents by looking at the ingredients.
I never had the chance to try something from this line and house, which has a huge fan-community.
Pleassured to change this and hope for my luck 😉

  • What a wonderful and poetic description. I liked all this review, but at first I was impressed by this “..opens with an unbearable feeling of life bursting at seams.” So I am intrigued.
I’ve read so many reviews about Fragrance du Bois, but never tested.

  • I’ve been interested in trying the creations from this fragrance house for quite a while, so I’m pleased to see this. Oud Jaune Intense sounds creamy and enveloping. I am in the USA.

  • I am in the US. I have not tried any Fragrance du Bois perfumes before. I like dana’s examination of the history and use of cranes in world folk-lore. I thought this sentence was very evocative of how the scents works, “Fragrance Du Bois Oud Jaune Intense sits on a base of exceptional mechanics where everything is outstretched and permanent in its glory, yet nothing stands out above the total—not the oud, not the vanilla, not the musk.” Its sounds like a sublime perfume.

  • “There are two kinds of people. The ones with loaded guns and the ones who dig”. This is my favorite film of all time.
Dana writes artistically as usual, well done. I was hooked from the start even if I don’t usually gravitate towards oud. My favourite part? The beginning, be sure.
Many thanks for this draw. I live in France.

Thanks to Dana, i had an imaginery date with Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense.
He took me to the jungle, where I felt how he “opens with an unbearable feeling of life bursting at seams. All stages of life are present in one breath, apparent and blatant like a tropical tree laden with all stages of fruiting: impossibly verdant fat leaves, plush flowers ready for pollination, half-sunned tart fruit, overripe drupes and pepos.”

    I am from Romania.

  • I found the pictures are very interesting and beautiful. I never tried any du Bois frag before but the mix of jasmine+orange+musk will be something. Im in Sweden EU.

  • One needs more than usual words and expressions to describe a Fragrance du Bois scent, and dana sandu manages to do that in a great and very special way. Oud Jaune Intense is probably one of the best from the brand,a splendid fruity floral ,passionate and almost tangible.
I own a few bottles from the brand, but not a Parfum one ,so i’d love to get it.

    Love from Romania!

  • Dana has a way with words, but also with ideas. The comparison of the three stages of this fragrance with different symbols of the cranes is quite unique. Nevertheless, what made me crave to smell this fragrance was the description of the top. I also enjoyed very much the pictures with the beautiful paper sculptures by Cristian Marianciuc. I must confess I never smelled any Fragrance Du Bois fragrance. But I totally trust Dana, this is probably a work of art. I’m from Romania.

  • tamayoidowu says:

I thoroughly enjoyed Dana’s well-crafted review of Oud Jaune Intense. I have been interested in the fragrance for some time now. I’ve only tried a tiny sample of this fragrance and I’m head over heels in love with it. I live in Memphis Tn USA and i hope i win this awesome giveaway!!!!

  • Bryant Worley says:

I appreciated how Dana deftly interwove the crane into her explanation of the fragrance, said explanation being effusive and ebullient, and how she makes you WANT to try the fragrance with such words as these
    – – “Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense opens with an unbearable feeling of life bursting at seams. All stages of life are present in one breath, apparent and blatant like a tropical tree laden with all stages of fruiting: impossibly verdant fat leaves, plush flowers ready for pollination, half-sunned tart fruit, overripe drupes and pepos…The fertility, here, is unapologetic.”

I have yet to delve into the Fragrance Du Bois line.

I hale from the United States of America.

  • This fragrance sounds fabulous! I’ve been to Bali and fell in love with their tropical flowers so I KNOW this fragrance will be a LOVE for me!! I’ve never tried a Fragrance du Bois perfume but the brand is on my list. I love how Dana broke down the top, middle and base notes. I need this fragrance to take me back to Bali!! I live in the USA.

  • doveskylark says:

How lovely to think of cranes when i read dana’s review. I remember learning how to fold origami cranes when I lived in Japan. And I used to search out photos and Chinese ink paintings of cranes flying in snow-covered landscapes. I love that the oud, musk, and vanilla are in harmony.
I haven’t tried any fragrances from Fragrance du Bois.
    I live in the USA.

  • I enjoyed the artwork accompanying the review a lot. Also some of the points about cranes such as; “As a result, cranes are present in every aspect of human symbolism: heraldry (as per a legend spurred by Pliny the Elder); ceremonial decorations (as for Xhosa, in South Africa); dance and elevated fighting styles (as in Chinese kung fu, where the crane brings fluidity, nobility, and immortality).” It seems not one part of the perfume sticks out above the others just that the whole is impeccable. Oud Jaune Intense really sounds wonderful. I’ve yet to tey amy Fragrance du Bois perfumes but would very much love to and I live in the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • I like the idea that all the notes are in balance in this fragrance. I have never tried Fragrance du Bois perfumes before. I live in the USA.

  • Hashim Madani says:

The plush jasmine and other white flowers plus the coconut and melon notes imply a rich tropical beachy vibe to this seemingly wonderful creation. Milano by Fragrance du Bois is awesome. USA.

  • I had no idea that cranes were so beautiful! This fragrance sounds like what I love in perfume – so perfectly blended that not one note takes the stage. And, I’ve never read “oud” and “embarrassingly pure” in the same sentence. I have yet to try Fragrance did Bois. I live in the USA.

  • What more could you ask for from a review? As usual, Dana is so descriptive that she effectively conveys all the feelings, passion and color of an ephemeral moment ennobled by a magical essence. I haven’t tried anything from Fragrance du Bois yet, nothing would make me happier than the chance to try the perfume that Dana called “mate for life”. Coming from her, that can only mean the absolute superlative!
You should have seen the joy of unboxing:Dana and “the Black magic box” from Fragrance du Bois. Greetings from Bucharest, Romania

This sounds like fulfillment of an ultimate perfume dream and Dana’s story reads like a finest novel, one that you just don’t want to end… Haven’t tried FdB perfumes but they are on my to-try list so it would be amazing to be lucky in this draw. I am in Ireland

    Great review Dana!
Fragrance du Bois really interests me as a brand, I hope to try some of their fragrances soon! Oud Jaune Intense looks amazing, white and yellow flowers mixed with oud, vanilla and musk seems divine!! Right now “tropical” fragrances are my first choice, monoi is one of my favourites note!
Thank you for the draw, I live in Italy (EU)

I juts got finished watching Sebastian’s video on 13 Awesome Beachy and Tropical Fragrances and happened to come across this write-up by Dana… what a coincidence. I liked how Sebastian featured it as a scent that was very tropical and beachy but with a depth to it thanks to the oud. That really peeked my interest! Then I read Dana’s work above….it was an over-the-top piece of work in such a glorious way. Dana has a way with words to manipulate your mind in to smelling the scent without actually smelling it! I had not heard of this fragrance before I saw Sebastian’s video, and although he definitely peeked my interest, Dana has added this to my wish list. I have not had the pleasure of trying any Fragrance du Bois scents, but I do plan on changing that. I need to grab some samples from Luckyscent and there are a few from FdB on my mind to get next… Thank you, Dana, for giving us your thoughts on Oud Juane Intense and for adding another beauty to my wish list. A huge thanks to Fragrance du Bois for your generosity and for this phenomenal opportunity! It is truly appreciated. Thanks, as always, Michelyn for everything you do! Sending warm wishes and gratitude from Delaware, US. Good luck all and stay safe friends!

  • I have not tried any of Fragrance du Bois scents. They sound beautiful. Dana does an interesting and engaging article about this wonderful fragrance. I love how she desccribes all of the top, middle and base of this amazing scent. The cranes are incredible. Thank you for the journey. USA

  • I love how beautifully this review described the significance of the swan in such an abstract manner. I definitely feel that the review suits the fragrance quite well, especially with such a combination of notes. I’m very interested in how the agave note comes into play here. I have never tried a Fragrance du Bois perfume, but their offerings seem awesome. Would love to win this giveaway. From NJ, USA.

I live in Boston, Massachusetts USA & even though I’ve yet to sample this house, after reading Dana’s review, I CAN’T WAIT to indulge. Dana has an amazing ability to take the reader on an incredible journey, opening one’s mind to not only the fragrance being described but the beautiful artwork included that matches. Reviews that are a work of art within a work of art! A reviewer? Noooo Dana is a true artist!

Hi from italy i enjoyed everithing it really interest me hope to smell one day but i can’t find were i live !! Never tried fragrances du bois for the same reason sadly

  • What a great review! I loeve the intermingling of the explanations of different symbolics of cranes with the development of the perfume. Still, my favourite image of the perfume must be this one: “tropical tree laden with all stages of fruiting: impossibly verdant fat leaves, plush flowers ready for pollination, half-sunned tart fruit, overripe drupes and pepos.”

    I’m in Slovenia

  • What an amazing review! So informative! The notes seem so well-blended and in harmony. I haven’t tried this house out yet but I hope I get the chance to do so this time!
    Writing from Hong Kong

  • Beautiful pictures! They match the review and the connection with the cranes.
I do not know this house, never had the chance to smell something from them until now.
    Thank you! Europe

  • I like the pictures, they are interesting. Jasmine+orange+musk its a must for summer time. I hope get to smelled soon. Im in Sweden EU.

  • great article in overall. You read it, and in your head it starts a imaginary movie. Beautifull pictures along with it. I have never tried anything from Fragrance du Bois, but have seen many revewies on them and people like this house a lot. It would be great to get to know this brand. Prague, Czech republic

  • Love Dana’s reviews, they are so eloquent! I have no tried any Fragrance du Bois perfumes before but I have been researching them and watching reviews. USA

  • Haven’t tried anything from Fragrance du Bois. Very interesting analogy and Cristian’s work is amazing! “Balance between the fleshy, ripe white flowers and a creamy tone that rings clean” – would love to try this! I’m from Romania

  • Thank you all for your amazing comments, I am humbled. It is always fantastic to see how my thoughts resonate in others, but this one is a particularly tender article because OJI manages to remind me of something (not sure what, yet) from childhood. It may be why it stuck to me the way it did…
But then again, in perfume, we never ask why.

  • This sounds like a great summer fragrance! Tropical fruits and florals. Thank you for the opportunity. USA

I greatly enjoyed the initial dissertation on the two types of people, but the continued correlation with creatures as elegant and beautiful as cranes enchanted me.
The fragrance appears to be just as splendid, characterized by hypervitality, fertile imagination and elegance.

  • Hei, really nice article and beautiful art pictures to complet if perfectly. I’m not familiar with these parfumes but that s sure that Dana can convince you easily, and it wouldn’t be the first time. Thank you for art three different formes! Alexandra from France

  • I absolutely adore Dana’s articles. She so poetic in her writing and describing fragrances. Her description of this scent made my heart sing as I love white florals and tropical scents – fine balance between the fleshy, ripe white flowers and a creamy tone that rings clean. I have had the chance to sample oud a range intense from the line and it’s beautiful. Thank you for the generous giveaway. I’m based in the US. Posting again due to an email issue

  • I would like to see the crane dance in the Tongdosa Temple in Korea, sounds beautiful. I am always interested in anything with ylang ylang. Thanks for such an enlightening review. USA

Thanks for this locely review, i love cranes but have never seen them outside a zoo. I enjoyed the historical aspects of cranes in cultures. White flowers and rambutan, what ab exceptionel combination.I live in Austria, EU, thanks for this draw.

  • Michael Prince says:

Dana, great review of Fragrance de Bois Oud Jaune Intense. I love the backstory on the history of the crane and its meaning in different countries and cultures. I also like how the top, middle, and base note description ties into the crane. I haven’t tried anything from Fragrance de Bois, but I am praying someday I will. I am from the USA.

  • naomi rooney says:

A very strong tropical flower fruit cocktail, I can’t imagine anyone complaining about performance. Opening went into the 2 hour mark, drydown several hours more. This isn’t quite my style but I’m not one to snub quality ingredients.

I could not detect Oud, so if it’s here it’s a minuscule amount. Tiare can go in a cheap direction on me—as it does in Oud Jaune Intense— and the reason it’s a pass.

In fact, it was kind of sickly the longer I wore it, but that’s me and the tiare flower. Not a down vote, this is for people who swoon for tenacious white tropical florals.
    USA

  • An impressive take on tropical fruits and flowers. Not my usual choice (I love dense, dark orientals) but this is stunningly beautiful. The oud note is light so don’t worry about a fecal note showing up in the dry down–the oud is very subtle, almost non-existent. A seamless creation that is FB worthy for those who love the languid, sensual quality of the south sea islands.
    USA

  • Bacuzzi Babs says:

Absolutely shocked that coconut isn’t included in the notes – it’s possible that the other tropical notes are giving me a false impression of a creamy coconut. But it is SO BEAUTIFUL – the florals are sweet and delicate, and the fruity notes smell edible.
It’s name describes it so well, it really makes me think of yellow tropical flowers, and warm yellow sun. This fragrance is a showstopper, I’ve had people asking me about it left and right, and can’t see myself without a bottle in my collection.
    USA

  • Brayton Beanland says:

The Opening is a very Fizzy fruity cocktail Soda Very surprising

The middle is sweet and blends effortlessly with the Ylang-Ylang and pineapple which I think is responsible for that enzymatic tangy Fizzy… which blends lightly with the orange blossom ..

When going into the dry down you will find sour/ fresh floral, & sweet light liquid sunshine .(-almost like a lightly carmalized pineapple caramel)

The total skin dry down (considering I’m very fair skinned hence Acidic skin with higher melanin is more alkaline and slightly oilier and makes sense smell sweeter)
The musk softens and smoothed our the vanilla and the woody note gives a very light depth

Like every review that dana writes, this one as well is full of imagery and you have to read it twice, at least, to make sure you get every idea she puts in words. I like about this fragrance that it seems to be very equilibrated and each note is in harmony with the others. Perfection.

  • The thing that I am loving the most about these reviews is that I leave with a feeling, but no real idea about how the Fragrance would smell. Of course the notes tell you, but the reviews are so beautifully written that I fall in love with every fragrance.

  • Barron Davie says:

I loved Dana’s review of this! The resemblance to the crane and self assurance along with the notes standing TOGETHER with none above one another… it fits so perfectly into what we need in the world today. Would be ecstatic to win this as the symbolism is touching and the fragrance sounds immaculate as well.

  • The use of paper cranes & theres folds evolving like the fragrance was excellent. I’ve not tried this house yet, but this screams me, monoi is a favourite of mine! and the ghostly hay note sounds excellent.

  • Hadley Farlow says:

I love how Dana brought two arts together.

I’ve tried this one in the Jovoy boutique once, and Dana’s review just reminded me how unique and good this one smells. I mean, white floral with oud, how often do you see that combo. The beginning smells so much like a fruit jello and it settles down so beautifully. Thank you for the opportunity of the giveaway. Normally I wish every participants good luck but I want to win this one so bad so, good luck to me hahaha.

  • Dana has written the review with a structure that guides us through the 3 stages of the fragrances while sticking to the poetic imagery of the crane. If I win, I will keep this piece at hand while trying it for the first time. I have tested some of the Fragrance du Bois on paper and they were overall impressive. I do not remember the names though, so I have to rediscover them! I’m in Denmark, EU.

  • Very informative and great imagery especially the cranes, and it sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I’ve yet to try any perfume from the brand, but would love to.

I truly love Dana’s reviews. They always make me feel special and magical somewhat different. Currently I do not own any perfumes from Fragrance du Bois but Oud Jaune Intense sound like a very intriguing scent to me since the notes are very exotic and oriental. • lindseyl1985 says:

I really enjoyed how Dana made me stop and think about how I perceive scents in an imaginative way, and the connection with visual world. The tie in with the migratory movement of the cranes and the birds themselves and of course the art, which is stunning. I have never tried anything from FDB, and would certainly like to. I enjoy an evocative experience with perceived notes, this sounds very beautiful and interesting. From NY USA.

  • I am so happy see review and great draw of Fragrance du Bois. I have read so many amazing reviews about this brand but never have chances to test them.
So beautiful story and associates about cranes and perfumes. I like white flowers in perfumeria.

  • I enjoyed this article! Fine idea to creat perfume about cranes as symbol of sun, hope and cyclicity, rebirth and new beginning.
I find pyramid of this perfume very interesting- must be smell beautiful and very “round”, balanced, elegant subtle.
Fragrance du Bois – it is dream for me have many, many perfumes from this brand. Now I haven’t.

  • Exquisite review by Dana Sandu
Oud Jaune Intense reminds me of eating Melon Sponge Cake and coconut Ice Cream in the middle of a white flowers field.

Thank you for the excellent review, Dana! Cranes are beautiful birds to watch – They have a quiet grace about them but are loud in the sky, when their calls resonate as they fly above. I have a fondness for sandhill cranes, who I always see walking in pairs or with their little ones.

I found the use of the crane as a metaphor for the beauty and evolution of this perfume quite fascinating.

I haven’t tried a Fragrance Du Bois fragrance before.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • I enjoyed Dana’s exploration of the structure of Oud Jaune Intense from the standpoint of the abstract—the sensations the fragrance evokes as opposed to a detailed, analytical breakdown of notes. I enjoyed the metaphor of the crane and weaving in historical details. It was a lovely review, just like the fragrance, which I’ve been lucky enough to sample. Thanks for the draw opportunity. • Fragrance Du Bois is high end niche brand i first saw at Jovoy Paris.
Not sure why Dana found a connection between cranes, ceremonial decorations in Asia and Oud Jaune Intense, interesting. I do not make the same connections, but very tropical one instead .
I found the smell of it to be similar to a classic cocktail, Midori Melon Ball Drop. If i had to make a review, and put a bird in it, i would have mentioned a Parrot
    Thanks for the top opportunity

  • This review makes this fragrance sound very interesting and like a very balanced, exotic and well constructed perfume. The bottle looks beautiful in the wonderful photos. Orange blossom, agave, salt, vanilla, oud and musk sounds great. I’ve never tried any of the fragrances from this house, but I’d like to. I have homes in both the Pennsylvania USA and Taipei, Taiwan. Thanks!

  • Having and reveling her natural creative skills to us , is what i know Dana for.
I don’t differentiate birds well, except for the most famous, cranes I think I’ve seen in the zoo only.
Fragrance Du Bois i never had a chance to smell, Oud Jaune Intense draws me is with its presentation and how well it’s made . Melons I live eating and smelling .

  • Dana’s review captured some incredibly concise points about this intriguing sounding fragrance. I love darker essences, and this one sounds perfectly yummy. Oud + coconut + orange blossom. Heaven.

  • I’m familiar with Fragrance Du Bois, smelled all prior 2020 , including Oud Jaune Intense. There’s a Hawaiian vibe in it , like I’m watching local girls performing Hula dance in front of me. I’m cautious about white flowers, but tiare is well blended with ylang-ylang, coconut and lots of fruits.
My favorite Fragrance Du Bois is Oud Orange Intense. I need to try all 2020 releases too .

  • Any review of Dana is a real delight, so this it could not be otherwise. This is a piece of art: “To me, it’s the fine balance between the fleshy, ripe white flowers and a creamy tone that rings clean- anything less would be 999 cranes, and anything more would be 1001.”
Haven’t tried anything from Fragrance du Bois 🙁

  • As always, Dana never fails to impress with her reviews. The crane analogy is a wonderful way of expressing the stages of the perfume.
Cristian’s art is so intricate and delicate at the same time. I’m in awe.
I’m more than curious to sample Oud Jaune and other creations from Fragrance du Bois, especially considering the use of ethically sourced oud oil. Their fragrances are on my wishlist for some time, but I never got to try any. I think it’s time to do just that.
Cranes have always been a part of our local folklore, too. Sadly I never got the chance to observe them.
Thank you for the beautifully written review and the generous giveaway!

  • Excellent review by Dana! I loved the pictures of the cranes and her many references to them in her review. This fragrance sounds absolutely amazing! My favorite part was: “Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense, too, feels fortuitous–the loving comes easily, entrancing like the promise of a wish fulfilled: irresistible but kind, it’s at once familiar, and embarrassingly pure. Hard to put in words the essence of an intrinsically generous smell, and very tempting to assign its warm heart to sheer luck–however, patient labour is clear in the minute attention to detail.” I have heard so many wonderful things about this brand and I hope that I am lucky enough to win. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Oud Jaune Intense I’m drawn to because I expect it will smell like a dreamy vacation i really need at the moment. With the schedule I have last few weeks, I could only dream about coconut, melons, saltiness of the beach and overall happiness.
