Fragrance du Bois Heritage Review (François Merle-Baudoin) + The Power of Pearl DRAW

Many are the glories of gorgeous nature art; many, its colors, and grander yet, its shapes; wide is the breadth of its palettes, and irresistible, its bouquets–but nothing shines, nothing entrances, and nothing inspires, through millenia, as much as the pearl.

The Pain

Deep in the meager mantle of a mere mollusk, between folds of silky flesh and underneath all earthly signs of a physical body, the pearl, invariably, starts with pain: an intruder, usually, scratching away at the ethereal; gnawing; hurting; irritating. Powerless and immobile, the oyster fights from the inside, in the most beautiful way it knows how: by coating the assailant with layers upon layers of nacre, thin as a wisp, satiny, and precious both in materiality and labor. Painful, still, is the toil of finding it: ask anyone from the Amas of Japan to the divers in Zubarah or Margarita island, and they’ll tell you the same: a ton of oysters and mussels will often produce no more than 3 or 4 preciously perfect margaric wonders.

The Patience

Everything else about the pearl is also measured in time:

to grow it, a bivalve needs anywhere from 6 months to 4 years;

to train to dive for it, a pearl hunter spends years plunging in the water up to 150 times a day;

to dive for it, they hold their breath up to 2 long minutes at a time;

to sort, drill, polish, measure, design, source, and finally match the pearl to its forever jewel mate—especially for the most spectacular gems—can take months.

After all, in most cultures, the pearl is the symbol of wisdom gained through experience.

The Permanence

The oldest pearl jewelry we know of was found in a Persian princess’ tomb, and it was dated to 520BC–but long before that, from the Chinese to the Egyptians, the blue-veined rich have adorned they surroundings (and, in some cases, their insides) with pearly spheres of wonder. Long after that, through empires and colonialism and the Van Cleef legacy, from Tahiti to Japan, pearls were passed on with the care of tradition and the generational-old hope that one’s memory—and family legacy—shall not fade; and although not part of every heritage, nacre has always been—and will always be—something to inherit.

Fragrance du Bois Heritage

I am well aware of the risks I’m taking likening Fragrance du Bois Heritage to a pearl; after all, I have nothing but myself to pass on to my eventual children, and no pearl string has ever made it close to any past bucolic link from my peasant ancestry; I, like every one of my progenitors, did not grow up gazing upon grandmamas bedecked in nacre glory, and all the heirlooms I now own were either incredible thrift finds or generous gifts from my beloveds.

Still, here I am judging lustre, and here Fragrance du Bois Heritage is, as belabored, perfected, and universal to me as a perfectly round pearl.

The opening is soft but puckering, a bit salty-insinuating, and tangy in a way that’s both mineraly and textural; I can’t help thinking of being fascinated by alabaster stone sculptures, as a child, and trying to lick them. Green flowers, spring fruit tree flowers, and cold calcar is what I get for a mere minute, after which the scent develops into clouds of plush watery florals (peony, cyclamen) and the most luxurious soap, still cold but more breathy, velvety, and sweet. As time goes by, I get the indelible feeling I’m smelling…my best self: the scent fuses with woody tones and brightens in a very personal way, echoing both one’s expected natural musks and steaming skin after a salty, bay leaf bath. There’s calm and there’s quiet here; there’s beauty; there’s peace.

There’s reflection here, and there’s reflexion; there’s value through solitude; there’s time. A classic.

Official notes: bergamot, aldehydes, frankincense, iris, jasmine, cedar, sandalwood, vanilla, 100% pure organic vintage oudh

Other impressions: soap, air-dried laundry, sun, nacre, windchimes (verdigris), cyclamen, powder

Disclaimer: Heritage generously gifted to me by Fragrance du Bois, after learning it’s one of my most favorite aldehydic compositions. Much, much appreciated.

  • Heritage was among the first perfumes I have tried from the house of Fragrance du Bois. Its beauty is beyond words. You have to smell it in order to experience it.

  • Andreea Florica says:

A most wonderful article! Indeed, there is something divine in the perfection of a pearl! From it’s shape to its’ angelic colour!
What a great connection to a great fragrance!
Thanks and hugs from Romania, Europe!

  • Thank you again dana for the wonderful review. I have never thought deeply about the symbolism of a pearl, however this review sparked me to do so. The notes of this fragrance do make me think ‘pearl’. It’s amazing how things can be tied to an olfactory thought without actually having a true scent of their own. I have not tried any Fragrance du Bois yet. From Canada with love.

  • A beautiful, interesting read and a different kind of review – as usual coming from dana. I don’t think I’ve ever tried something with pure organic vintage oud. Please count me in for the draw! Thank you! Eu

  • From my limited knowledge, I do not recall seeing this mix way too often in any perfume: frankincense, oud and aldehydes. Oud and frankincense, indeed, but throwing in the aldehydes? This must be really something!
Thank you for this wonderful chance!

  • Windchimes are an interesting take.. Sounds like a nicely done floral by FDB.

    Best from long island

  • I absolutely adore Dana’s artistic reviews. Loved the reference and imagery of pearls as well as reference to alabaster stone statue. I enjoy the house of Fragrance du bois but have not had the opportunity to test Heritage. Sounds amazing! Thanks for the awesome giveaway! Based in US

  • I never really thought about their conception. Never the less, of all the possible adornment, pearls are my favorite.
They do have the reputation of being cold, somber, understated, or old fashion. But to me they are none of that. They are indeed elegant, serene, beautiful but on skin they also became alive and reveal their charms. Only there they truly shines and sometimes can even disclose their carnal qualities.
That is why I understand Dana’s likening between pearl & heritage. Adlehydic powdery florals often receive the same preconception. Despite that they do have all the qualities that Dana mentioned above.
There might also have, like pearls getting warmer on the skin of the wearer, some fire hiding behind this perfect appearance.

I never had the opportunity to try any Fragrance du Bois.

    From France.

  • As the article indicates, it is not easy to obtain pearls from the depths of the water. It seems pearl has been a component of jewelry for thousands of years now. The composition is aldehydic and has mineraly and salty vibes. I am in US

  • The composition of Heritage sounds as classic and austere as a string of pearls itself. My sister and I farm oysters for fun (and for cocktail hour) on family property on the shores of Puget Sound. In years time only my sister has been lucky enough to find one single pearl. It was a homely and misshapen little thing, nothing like the beautiful polished orbs of fine jewelry. Heritage sounds entirely like strand of beautiful, expensive pearls, but nevertheless I enjoyed reading about the process and patience involved in coaxing a thing of beauty out of the workings of a humble bivalve. Thank you from Oregon, USA.

  • I have not tried anything yet from Fragrance du Bois. The review, with all the pearl imagery, was very beautiful. It also makes me wonder if I pass down my fragrances, like I would with jewelry, if they would be appreciated or received in the same way….
    Thank you, from Canada 🙂

  • Very interesting article!!
    Pearls are beautiful and perfect
I like to have the chance to test Heritage!!
    Thank you!

I’m obsessed with this house and shamelessly sampled more than I can count at a Jovoy store. But, I can’t recall if Heritage was in the mix. What appeals to me from Dana’s review are its plush watery florals, jasmine and vanilla notes. My absolute favorites are Oud Orange Intense, New York and Oud Bleu Intense. VA, USA

  • The collaborations of Dana with Sebastian Jara regarding specific notes or styles in perfume have always been so incredibly informative, I loved watching them.
This article is equally compelling, highlighting an unusual bottle from a luxury brand, the poetic impressions are appreciated.
The notes of Frankincense, Oudh, Iris and Bergamot sound interesting, I would love to try yet another untested brand for me.
    I’m in Canada

  • dana, thank you for this amazing review. Real pearls are one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. A miracle, so exquisite made from a single grain of sand. I think that comparing this fragrance to pearls is brilliant and I completely see the parallels. The journey of the drydown on this sounds magnificent.

I have not yet had the chance to sample any of their fragrances, but I definitely need to.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I enjoyed dana describing Heritage as a perfect pearl. I liked the idea of a salty, bay leaf bath. I have not tried any Fragrance du Bois fragrances, thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • I enjoyed learning about the process by which pearls are made and the many ways Dana tied pearls back to the composition of Heritage. It sounds breathtaking. Also how much goes into pearls being made, searched for and collected, and perfected. Ive not tried any Fragrance Du Bois perfumes as of yet but there are certainly some I’d some day like to try. I hadn’t heard much about Heritage in particular until reading this but it really does sound unique and interesting. Thanks from CT USA for the extremely generous draw.

  • Teresa Brooks says:

Fragrance de Bois Oud Violet Intense is one of my favorite fragrances…would be very interested in experiencing Heritage!!! By Dana’s description, sounds lucious and beautiful..

  • concertslover says:

This past year has created a need for a little peace and calm in our lives. This is a brand I have not really much information about but I’m always looking to expand my horizons. Would love to get lucky enough to sample this one. Thank you. From USA

  • Dana’s review is just lovely. I really like the intro about Perls and how they are harvested. A lot of work, but also such a beautiful thing produced in nature. I really could not imagine a different scent to represent pearls than something soapy clean, velvety, powdery and aldehydic. The only fragrance from this brand that I’ve tried so far is New York 5th Avenue. But I have a couple more on my wish list!. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I enjoyed the comparison of this aldehydic fragrance to a pearl. I am definitely drawn to the notes and the brand, which I haven’t had a chance to try yet. The vintage oud sounds very interesting too. I appreciate the opportunity for win and I am in the USA.

  • Dana’s words help me imagine the association of the scent, the pearls, and the heritage. Left to my own devices I would struggle to imagine the harmony of scents to represent pearls (not ‘heritage’ — I’m attached to visual presentations). Her review helps remind me that the aim is ‘heritage’ — and of course heritage of perfumery is justly presented here.

Also I enjoyed the 3-step structure of the review. Knowledgably poetic and great storytelling to build up to the ‘heritage’ in Fragrance du Bois Heritage. Would be a great public speaking piece! Just imagining the strategic pauses and intonations give me the chills of being immersed in the sea, diving for treasures.

I haven’t tried any Fragrance du Bois perfume before (sadly), and I’m based in Thailand! (equally sad with how the situation is degrading — but let’s save the politics talk for later!)

  • I liked the analogy between the birth of a pearl, also the time and effort it takes until it becomes the most valuable and the olfactory pyramid of this perfume. It inspires a white, clean and luxurious smell just like the image of a pearl highlighted in the most perfect jewel.
Wonderful review from Dana, as always!
    Greetings from Romania (EU).

  • So informative and yet so emotional.maybe people like pearls need patience. Big fan of Fragrance du Bois which I learned about from dana jeune intens.
I bought the discovery kit and love quite a few
    So elegant like this article

great house at this time and age and great writing behind it. dana knows how to evócate a classic scent taken inspiration from the beautiful pearls. also for me the combo brightens far and wide since i’m a big fan of classic aldehyde scents. i have the legendary sahraa oud since its conception of natural aged oud it’s the quintessential oud scent for me.

wonderful review by dana. the composition of Heritage i must say to be one of my favorite scents I have tried sahraa oud and it’s one of my favorite scents because of the natural ouds.

  • So far I never quite found an aldehidic on my liking but it seems that this one might be. The combination of notes combined with the rounded smoothness that Dana describes makes me curious of its effect on my skin and how it would develop combined with my chemistry, seems as it can be quite uplifting.

  • I enjoyed reading the fun facts about pearls. I haven’t tried any Fragrance du Bois fragrances yet and I’m from Pa USA

  • Very vivid imagery… interesting metaphor with the pearls. Fragrance du Bois has been out of my budget, unfortunately. USA based.

  • Pain, Patience and (finally) Permanence. Great articole from Dana, very meditative and with a deep meaning for people who are actually wondering how you can become what you always wanted to.

As for this gorgeous composition, I would love to have the chance to explore the “clouds of plush watery florals”, as I love florals in every single possible way and interpretation. I would love to experience it.

I tested so far Santal Complet, Oud Orange Intense and Sahraa, the last one being my favorite so far from this house. I have a little, precious and very rarely worn sample of the beautiful Sahraa.

Thank you for the chance! I live in Europe, Romania.

  • I have not tried any from Fragrance du Bois, but wherever I look – facebook, youtube etc – all, and I mean that all! of their fragrances are kept in high praise! Reading texts like this by dana makes me to want more and more to discover these jems!
    Europe. Thank you!

I truly enjoyed Dana’s comparison of the intricate process by which a pearl is created with that of the creation of a perfume. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to try anything from Fragrance Du Bois, but would definitely be very interested in doing so. Everything I’ve heard has been very positive. Located in California.

A house that I have got experience with l have only tried Sahraa Oud. I loved reading about the perceived notes especially cyclamen. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • I loved the passus about how pearls are rooted in time – months, dives, breath, workmanship and finally heritage. The fragrance itself sounds so elegant. Although, when I spoke to a jewelrer, they said that pearls and perfume do not mix well and that one should put in perfume first, then wait for a few minutes and only then add the pearls.
    I’m in Slovenia

  • Reading through this wonderful review really makes you stand still to the beauty of nature and how long something can take to be made. Especially in this fast moving world we live in. The fragrance sounds wonderful and definitely made me think of my mom who always wears pearls! Really like the pictures too!

Never tried a Fragrance du bois but now I am so curious!! I live in Belgium.

  • Thank you for such a vivid and captivating image of the pearls in the first part of review . What a beautiful text, sets such a nice tone to the review. I not very familiar with this house only smelled the Santal Complete once. I would absolutely love to try Heritage. I am based in EU, Lithuania

  • I was thinking how soap is so easy but still so hard to represent in a perfume. The feeling of being clean without smelling like detergent is not so easy; Heritage sounds like it does the job just right from Dana’s words. I would be curious how it compares to all time classics from the brand (Sahraa comes to mind) or from the general perfume world. I am from the EU.

  • Love the review; definitely informative, playful and beautiful. Likewise and maybe because of my peasant ancestry I had nothing to pass along to my child. Sadly since I haven’t had a string of pearls attached to my inheritance, my unconditional love and long lasting memories would be some of the few things I’ll leave behind.
Thank you for another great review and for the opportunity to enter the draw. Commenting from Orlando, Fl USA.

  • Hello, Dana, I’m so in love with this perfume and I always thought that it is under-appreciated, not discussed enough. I trust your thoughts a lot and look at this – we so much agree. I would love to win this beauty!
    I live in Hungary, Budapest.

  • FdB are fantastic fragrances. I haven’t smelled one that I didn’t love. The elements used are so precious, consistent and so perfectly balanced and mixed. Also, I don’t think I smelled a greater oud than the one used in FdB fragrances. I currently live in Romania.

  • Great review! Sounds like a real classic aldehyde white floral fragrance, which is exactly my favorite kind of feminine fragrance. I would love to try this one.
Thanks for the generosity, I live in France.

  • I too am fascinated by pearls and their mysteries. I always imagine a proper pearl fragrance to have iris and smell wealthy. I a, definable interested in trying this fragrance. I have not tried anything by Fragrance Du Bois, but I will now check them out.

  • I enjoyed most the descriptive paragraph as it described the saltiness and the idea of smelling one’s best self. I have not tried anything from this house. US

  • Stunning perfume! The association with the power of pearls is perfect! Thank you, Dana, for this review! I live in Romania, EU.

  • I always find Dana’s reviews insightful, because she always connect the perfume with some other form of art or some oddity in nature – like she did with pearls in these review. I thought the review was great, as is every review Dana writes! I’ve had a decant of New York Intense by FdB, loved it to death, but could never afford a bottle. Maybe Bois Heritage would be my first Fragrance Du Bois bottle? I live in Croatia, EU.

  • I always considered fragrances as something to be used (and consumed) for one’s pleasure, and not to be passed to future generations, so comparing a perfume to an heirloom is indeed an interesting idea. I have not tried anything from Fragrance Du Bois. I live in Italy.

  • The pearl descriptions are intoxicating. Have one tried one Fragrance du Bois, Rouge Intense. The dry down was so gorgeous. From California. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • I found Dana’s article so interesting. All about Pearls and it’s history. Then a beautiful description of Heritage. I have not tried any of Fragrance Du Bois but have read much about the house and am curious to sample it. USA

  • I am mostly curious about that ingredient of pure organic vintage oud together with the flowers and the aldehydes. From the reviews, Heritage seems spectacular! Thank you!

  • What a beautiful review! I love the comparison of Heritage with pearls. I never knew how much it takes to pearl as we know to be born. Maybe because of that painful start, it is said that pearls bring the tears?..
I love FdB fragrances. I have tried some, and all of them are the best! Even notes that I don’t really appreciate in other perfumes, FdB makes it so loveable!  I didn’t get my nose on the Heritage yet, but I honestly wish I could get it soon.
    I am from Lithuania, EU.

  • Fragrance du Bois’ Heritage, like a pearl, is something to pass on to the next generation. You know how they say about great things: you don’t actually own them, you merely look for them for the next generation!
I think Heritage has the quality of becoming better with age. Like a special wine, its’ ingredients get richer, more rounder, more perfect than perfect!

  • As a fragrance collector, there is a always a certain kind of enjoyment one gets from finding a new fragrance. And then there is the wonder of finding THE fragrance – something that speaks to you, or calls up some forgotten memory. I loved the imagery that Dana used to describe Heritage; some fragrances are just scents, but some like this one are full sensory experiences. I’ve long been a lover of Fragrance du Bois, and I’m sure that Heritage lives up to the rest of their offerings. I would jump at a chance to try this, especially as my home in New York will soon see warmer Spring weather.

  • Nomen est omen! The name speaks for itself!
Like Dana, I never saw pearls on the neck of my mother or grandmother, but it would be great for my daughter to see Heritage in the cabinet and be able to leave this to her as a wedding gift or for celebrating an important event in her life.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

What is there not to love about Pearls, I am a woman addicted to their strings of irridescent beauty, all colours and types of pearls. intresting facts and information here married with Dana’s usual style and graphics. The juxtaposition of salty aspects and the sweet velevety textures lure me like a siren. I have as yet not experienced any Fragrance du Bois, so this would be quite an introduction. Thank you. I live in SW France.

  • Another Dana’s wonderful introduction to the perfume I was not familiar with. I especially enjoyed a highly educational part about the creation, history, and symbolic meaning of the pearl. To my taste, pearl jewelry represents timeless and universal classiness and elegance.
A description of how the fragrance makes Dana feel adds another layer to its attractiveness. Judging by the list of notes, I can picture a very elegant and sophisticated, yet contemporary fragrance.

I discovered Fragrance du Bois as late as, about, mid-2020 and I still haven’t tried anything from them yet.
I live in Slovenia. Thank you for educational and inspirational content, and a very generous draw.

  • Jonathan Mylius says:

Though I’ve yet to have the sensory pleasure of Fragrance du Bois Heritage I’m already anticipating the sensory overload of having done so following the review. Having my Gemological Institute of America certification as well as 35+years of my profession within the higher end of the fine jewelry industry (guild jewelry) I couldn’t improve upon said review. (I’m degreed in journalism). The wording in review is stellar. Passion and the efferent quality makes one seeing the most flawless pearl ever created.

  • I loved reading about the numbers involved in the creation and discovery of a pearl – beauty against the odds! And I can see the connection between an aldehydic scent and a pearl; both can be quite breathtaking and luminous in their own way.

I haven’t experienced any Fragrance du Bois scents yet, but Heritage sounds like an excellent place to start. Thank you for the chance, from the US!

  • wandering_nose says:

Dana has managed to create a veil of mystery around this fragrant masterpiece, and add another layer of beauty to its already magnificent aura. I am mesmerized by her unique ability to connect fragrances to objects and ideas we are universally acquainted with and take it from there to paint the most astonishing mental pictures. The likening of Heritage by Fragrance du Bois to a perfect pearl does both the idea of a pearl and the fragrance a huge favor. I have not had the chance to try FdB perfumes as of yet but I have been wanting to very much! Thank you from Ireland

  • I love this beautiful almost poem like ode to the pearl and Heritage by dana. I’m intrigued how dana describes this perfume as stone sculptures and like the idea of a perfume having the mineral smell of stone with its associated elegance. Usually the mention of Oudh makes me hesitant as I’m associating it with a more “dirty” smell in perfume, however dana seems to describes this as the opposite: clean, powdery and ozonic. Heritage sounds absolutely dreamy and would love wear this as much as a pearl necklace. Marit UK

  • Interesting comparison between a pearl and life and perfumes. I never tried. Fragrance du Bois. Florida, Miami

  • I liked Dana s review of pearl history. if you mix jasmin with vanilla and sandalwood you got to have some lovely frag that people will love. I live in Sweden EU.

  • Dana’s writing sells this so well, it reminds me of the Mad Men episode when Don Draper does the presentation about the Kodak Carousel– as in, this is the ultimate experience someone can have with a product. The review pulls at my heartstrings, but also offers a little of Dana herself (wanting to lick the alabaster!). I’ve never tried any Fragrance du Bois. (USA)

  • Currently on an aldehyde kick after my recent acquisition of chanel no 5 and January scent project’s Horla. This mix of notes sounds like it brings something new to the world of fragrances and I’d love a chance to wear it on skin. Personally haven’t had the chance to try any of the fragrances from this line but I may have to order some samples.
Currently living in the Pacific Northwest (U.S)
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • Pearls have an intrinsic calming quality. There’s something about the soft ivory color and the luster of the material that seems grounding. It is appropriate that the fragrance has an overall ocean feel. The salty/mineral opening and the green notes leading into plush, watery florals sounds elegant. I’ve never tried any scent from Fragrance du Bois before but this sounds lovely! Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I’m well familiar with Fragrance Du Bois, smelled all their fragrances, excluding only the Attars, and the brand new , and overly hyped Minuit Et Demi , collaboration with Demi Rawling , female YouTube reviewer.
Heritage is really classy fragrance , and to my surprise I’m on the same page with Dana this time , I mean almost.
The opening is mix of aldehydes and sharp citrus, with strong , expensive soap vibe . The base is where Heritage shines, it’s woody , with dominant and creamy, natural smelling sandalwood, a trademark for Fragrance Du Bois fragrances. Unlike Dana saltiness in the opening, and sweetness in the base i don’t get.
My favorite Fragrance Du Bois is Oud Orange Intense. Still have .. maybe 10ml left I’m my 6-7 years old bottle.

  • You had me at luxury soap. I love a good soapy fragrance and this one sounds like its one of the best. Theres something special about feeling squeaky clean in a nice suit. Thanks for the opportunity. USA

  • Just the amount of pain and effort that goes into each natural pearl is astounding. Dana did an excellent job at highlighting this aspect of the precious material. Heritage is indeed a beautiful fragrance, a dense, majestic aroma with soapy and lustrous accents. Some other fragrances I’ve tried from Fragrance du Bois are Sahraa, Oud Violet Intense, Oud Bleu Intense, and Parisian Oud. Thanks so much for this amazing chance! I’m in Oregon, USA.

  • natalia eliza says:

I found it interesting how dana equated the life of the perfume to the life of a pearl. Both items hold the title of being a classic beauty, and I thought this was an excellent comparison! Love from Texas.

  • I love Dana’s description of wanting to lick alabaster statues as a child. They really do look good enough to eat! I think the metaphor of pearls for a scent called Heritage in the oriental style is quite apt thanks to the culture of pearl diving in the Middle East. I would love to try this one. I was able to smell many scents from Fragrance du Bois at Jovoy in Dubai. My favorite is Sahraa Oud. Thank you for the draw. US.

  • Nice review Dana!
I really enjoyed how you described the transition of the perfume from start to finish, specially the part that woody notes come in to the scene and how the perfume echoes ones skin scent after a salty, bay leaf bath. Sounds promising!

I’ve never had the chance to smell any of Fragrance du Bois creations, but hopefully this will be my first one!

    Greetings from Aalborg, Denmark!

  • I really enjoyed learning about this perfume viewed through the lens of the pearl – it’s a great metaphor and a great metaphor for fragrance in general. Aren’t perfumes in a sense olfactory pearls? They are cultivated, in a painstaking process, contained within their vessels – they cannot be rushed to the light. At the same time, the element of creative accident (the grain of sand flushed in) and friction is essential. Is the beauty of the pearl about inheritance? Maybe less so than a sense of the hard-won, time-honed, and the reminder that beauty can start in the most unassuming places. I love this ‘there’s value through solitude’ and the sense of idiosyncracy and contradiction in this piece: aldehydes/incense, deep sea/air, aquatic/stone, lasting gem/accomodating flesh, grit/smoothness, and the pucker that suggests both a salty tang and a kiss. I think ‘windchimes’ must be the best perfume note I have ever heard of! The most interesting and complex beauty arises I think from contradiction and this perfume sounds intriguing to me (I have not tried anything from Fragrance du Bois before, and come from Australia).

  • I enjoyed the backstory of the pearl in regards to the scent.
I live in Romania and have not tried any Fragrance Du Bois yet.

    Great article, as always, Dana!

  • A perfume, as a pearl, is timeless. Both their birth and methamorphosys takes time to get to the perfect form and the process is a form of art in itself. Every scent gets you somewhere and if you can’t describe that place, well… Dana can deffinetly help you. Putting into words what one senses with the heart ar nose is a form of art as well as the birth of the perfume itself.
Hugs and kisses from Suceava, Romania

  • Dana always leaves me speechless, she really transposes me into the story and makes me part of it. For me pearls mean purity, continuity, eternal life, perfect elegance. I have not tried anything from Fragrance du Bois, but it is never too late! Thanks Dana, you are a delight to me, an encyclopedia, and a mountain of information!

  • Each and every one of Dana’s review it’t driving me to a place where I could swear that this very perfume was made for my exact taste.
This one, that we just read, makes no exception. I want to have it, I need to have it.
And then again, I’m one of those that were saving for a pearl string…
Thank you Dana for helping me dream about salty foam and diving into deep waters, as I get dressed to go out in the frosty cold winter of Finland .

  • Kateryna Plesiuk says:

Oh god, this is literally my dream to win this precious beauty. Dana has written the review in such an artistic way, I was genuinely interested in reading it. The pearl comparison feels so naturally now, she has a gift of writing!
I am currently in the Ukraine, but my relatives are in the US, so I can get it there also!

  • This was such a great depiction by Dana and I really enjoyed the comparison to the lasting Heritage of pearls in ancient and modern culture! So simple, yet so complex in formation and the time it took to get to that point. I love everything about this post and have never tried a fragrance du bois perfume.

I am fascinated by pearls and how they are created. Heritage being compared to them sounds like perfection to me.
I haven’t tried any Fragrance du Bois perfume yet, but I would love to.
I live in EU. Thank you for this amazing review!

  • Dana did a fantastic job once again likening a fragrance to an object. One would say: who would’ve thought about comparing a perfume to a pearl? Yet, once one reads the notes and the vibe they create, likening them to a pearl seems most reasonable: mineral opening, acquatic floral evolution and a pristine, soapy quality throughout the entire evolution.
I have never tried Fragrance du Bois scents before, though I heard amazing things about the house.
I am in Romania, E.U. Thanks!

  • WeAreScentient says:

Ooh this sounds stunning, a floral ball of perfection. It’s lovely to hear the history of the Pearl used as an analogy for the creation & experience of a perfume. Beautiful!
I’ve not tried anything from the house yet & I’m in Ireland

  • dana’s talk of her peasant ancestry and the lack pearl-bedecked family matrons resonated with me. I found myself saying, “Same.” And I too have a fascination with the pearl, and with a sort of inherited wealth aesthetic. Maybe it is envy. At any rate, I would love to try this and to smell like my best self too. I have not tried any fragrance du Bois perfumes. I am in the USA.

  • Such a beautiful review from Dana Sandu! The allegory of the pearl is just perfect! I’ve never really understood the value one single pearl could have, but reading this, I now understand why my mother’s most precious jewel is a pearl neckless.
I’ve never tried any of Fragrance du Bois perfumes, and maybe never will, since they are out of my paycheck. Nevertheless it doesn’t stop me from being curious and admiring them through the reviews of others. Like a pearl, I assume that their quality must me splendid so, I understand why they are so top notch.
This particular one makes me very curious: I love Oud fragrances, and I love Aldehydes (I can keep my nose of Chanel nº 22, Amouage Jubilation XXV Woman or my beloved Balenciaga Le Dix). What I cannot even begin to imagine is the combination of both – it must be really something like a pearl: a jewel that can be passed through generations, which combine beauty and light in its simplicity (aldehydes) and the greatness achieved through pain and effort (Oud is also the result of a struggle, in this casa from a tree due to an infection deep within its flesh) – true Heritage. I really would like to have the chance to smell it someday.
    I’m from EU (Portugal)

  • Dana’s review is worthy of the perfume described – as always, she knows how to imagine a world or a concept surrounding perfumes and then describe them to us . We cannot but fall for this beautiful description of such a perfect work of nature as the pearl.
Thank you for the most generous give away, would love to be so lucky as to win.
    I am in EU.

  • thank you dana for an incredible review. i particularly enjoyed how you articulate the feelings the perfume is able to evoke in such a descriptive manner. (i thought windchimes was a very interesting impression) i love aldehydes in perfumery too and it would be a pleasure to be able to try such a masterpiece. thanks so much! from singapore

  • I’m drawn to Fragrance du Bois Heritage
because I expect it will smell like my remote tropical trip i was planning, before the world going upside down.
With the schedule I have last few weeks, I could only dream about my Margarita island , pearls and diving Wow . Turquoise sea water, greenness, expensive hotels, with expensive soap , i so dream of such experience right now, it will easily satisfy my adventuristic soul.
Fragrance Du Bois is completely new brand to me , bottle looks stunning.
Thanks to Dana , and to Fragrance Du Bois for the generosity.
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • First, what gorgeous photos of pearls! The pictures really highlight their perfection. This perfume must be great if Dana is comparing it to a pearl. I enjoyed the info on the “birth” of a pearl. Thanks for the article and to Fragrance Du Bois for the draw! USA

  • This sounds as the most luxurious soap in the world, shiny as a pearl and most appreciated by wise noses. I would love to hunt this pearl gem and enjoy its magnificence. Thanks for the opportunity, greetings from Mexico.

  • Fragrance with a strong character , filled up with the best of the best sandalwood, oud , incense and other ingredients. Mild sweetness i think will make Heritage a bit more livelier.
Without a doubt special occasions only perfume , you keep in your wardrobe, and use 3-4 times per year.
At the moment all sea , and pearl harveating destinations Dana mentioned , are just a wishful thinking to me .
Fragrance Du Bois I know by name only.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

Thank you Dana for this inspiring and interesting review: I love pearls and Fragrance du Bois and the suggestions evoked by Dana’s words really make me wanting so badly to be the lucky winner! I own a full bottle of Siberian Rose and have tried Petales de Cashmere and London Oud: Fragrance du Bois have been my first purchase of a nice perfume so I am particularly fond of them (in addition to the amazing fragrances and also the philosophy and care behind them). Greetings from Milan, Italy

  • Dana Maximilian says:

As always, Dana’s review allures me in such a soft but powerful manner, just like a PEARL, appearing so delicate but being really so tough!!. I am pearl lover and I think Dana’s photo of those pearls floating above the satinated skin and the silent background could be the most beautiful photo of pearls I have ever seen… Truly artistic and beautiful. She has this incredible gift of transporting us in pure perfume’s heaven just using words and images !! Isn’t this magical?? I can almost SMELL it!! I have never tried a perfume from Fragrance du Bois but just saying this name I am totally seduced by it!! I live in Romania and I would be very happy to have a bottle of what Dana said is it’s one of her most favorite aldehydic compositions…I mean, WOW!! <3

  • Thanks for beautiful review!!
I have read and listen so many reviews about Fragrance du Bois perfumes, but never tried.
Heritage sounds amazing with its mineral opening, green flowers, watery flowers, luxurious soap notes. Amazing.
    I am from Armenia.

  • Cezara Alexandra says:

As always, Dana not only reviews the perfume but tells us a story. I am really curious why she is likening this FdB fragrance to pearls. Maybe it’s the vibe? I don’t know. All I know is that we all think about and feel perfume differently, maybe each time we sniff it. I love Dana’s stories and lessons, very informative and this kind of „grand” fragrance deserves such an introduction. I have tried Fragrance du Bois Oud Jaune Intense, Santal Complet, and Oud Orange Intense and I fell in love with them all! I live in Europe, Romania.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

beautiful review. i’ve never experienced this house but i love the likening of this fragrance to the cultivation of a pearl. thank you for the draw. i’m in the usa.

  • LacramioaraH says:

I was very pleased to read Dana’s review of the “Heritage”. She makes you to enter in her description and dream of wearing the string of pearls, accompanied by a few drops of Heritage.
I haven’t tried any perfume from Fragrance du Bois.
    I live in Romania, Eu.

  • A perfume fit for a queen! I love aldehydes and I am sure I will love Heritage as well! From the reviews, I see that this fragrance is all about aldehydes and the smell of luxury!
    Thank you for the draw!

  • I got a sample set and Heritage was amongst the samples in the package. I must admit that it does stand out! It has a classic, vintage vibe to it, still relatable to nowadays tastes, not outdated in any way, but created to please even the most demanding standards! It would be a great addition to any afficionado’s collection!

  • This reminded me of when I went to Sea World and watched the Japanese divers dive for the pearls. Their stamina was amazing. I just love the “glow” of the pearls in the photos. My family as some heirloom pearls, but not in any setting I would ever wear, sadly they aren’t on a string but a brooch. I did not know pearls were found in the tombs from long long ago. I’ve tried maybe 4 from Fragrance Du Bois, I liked NY 5th Avenue and Orange Oud. I’m planning on purchasing a bottle for my upcoming milestone birthday, but haven’t decided which one yet. Been wanting to get my nose on Violet Oud. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I think that it’s interesting that Dana said that this fragrance becomes smelling like the most luxurious soap: when I read that it caused me to want to try this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything yet from Fragrance du Bois. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • This was a glowing review of Fragrance du Bois Heritage by Dana. She compared it to the perfection of a pearl. Looking at the notes, oudh is what most fascinated me though in a masterpiece such as Fragrance du Bois Heritage, it seems one has to consider the whole structure, and the symphony of all notes. Enjoyed this review and the history of pearls. While I have not tried any Fragrance du Bois Perfumes, yet, I feel I should after reading Dana’s review. Thanks for the review and the generous draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Pearls , diving , top tier soapy and woody fragrance? Only Dana can make such connection 🙂 One way or the other Heritage is leaning into my territory. Being a barber I love well made soapy fragrance, also woody ones. I love diving too , in my late 20s , and early 30s I used to dive at least once a week, but now once a month is the best I can do.
I have tow famous, regular clients at the Barbershop, one actor, and one football player, I’ll allow them to spray some Heritage when they’re leaving, but me? I’ll cherish it a bit more.
I’ve heard of course about Fragrance Du Bois, but never had a chance to smell their fragrances.
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • Bryant Worley says:

Dana is one of, if not THE BEST Cafleurebon writers. I really enjoyed the lesson on what it takes in creating, and then harvesting a ‘bivalve’s margaric wonder’:

    The Patience

Everything else about the pearl is also measured in time:

    to grow it, a bivalve needs anywhere from 6 months to 4 years;

    to train to dive for it, a pearl hunter spends years plunging in the water up to 150 times a day;

    to dive for it, they hold their breath up to 2 long minutes at a time;

to sort, drill, polish, measure, design, source, and finally match the pearl to its forever jewel mate—especially for the most spectacular gems—can take months.

(little did I know that it takes more than someone finding a shell on the beach, shucking it, and out comes the pearl).

And the there’s the way she spoke about the fragrance (after reading this, more than likely Fragrance du Bois will be happy they gifted her this):

“The opening is soft but puckering, a bit salty-insinuating, and tangy in a way that’s both mineraly and textural; I can’t help thinking of being fascinated by alabaster stone sculptures, as a child, and trying to lick them.

I’ve only tried one Fragrance du Bois: Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a sample of New York 5th Avenue, wore it to work, and THROUGH THE MASK!, as she was passing by me, my manager said: ‘Wow! What’s that you have on? You smell good. Were you burning incense before you came to work?’ (looked up the notes, and there’s no incense, but she was getting that olfactory vibe).

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

Thank you for the wonderful review. I could totally see the connection between pearls and FdB’s Heritage. Sahraa is one of the best scents I have smelled. It would be a dream come true to own Heritage. From Hong Kong.

Fragrance du Bois makes wonderful perfumes in incredibly beautiful bottles of real jewelry. I would be happy to have this bottle. I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • Dana, I adore your reviews. I am fascinated by the power of pearls and their mysteries. I haven’t tried any Fragrance du Bois perfume. Greetings from Romania

  • It’s so beautiful this article with the link betwean a fragrance and a pearl. I like also the description „ There’s calm and there’s quiet here; there’s beauty; there’s peace.”.

  • Thank you for this little history lesson on pearls! I like how Heritage is compared to the perfection of a pearl. Nature is a true wonder! From pearls that are perfectly spherical in shape, to the notes that are found in a perfume like Heritage… we have to appreciate nature’s gifts!

  • What an artistic review – this sounds like a very classic and elegant perfume. I have not had the opportunity to test any of the Fragrance du Bois scents. Thank you for the draw! From Finland.

    Hello,
I have never tried Fragrance de Bois and Dana’s review is as always: UNIQUE, AMAZING!!!
    Great comparison with pearls.
    I live in London, Uk.

  • Thanks Dana for beautiful review! I enjoyed interesting information about pearl and description too. I didn’t know that pearl mining is so difficult.
It so amazing that FdB perfumes has 100% pure organic vintage oudh. I think vintage oudh brings to composition depth and character.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with FdB fragrances, just always read every review about this house’s perfumes with big intereste.

  • I think Heritage pays homages to the1920’s Fashion, for both Men and Women . I am thinking male and female flappers , wearing well-tailored pinstriped suits, tuxedos, silk shirts and handkerchiefs, raccoon fur coats, fedora hats, suspenders, bow ties, black patent leather shoes and spats.
Creamy sandalwood, real oud , two small
pinches of vanilla, and incense, sounds fantastic.
The one Fragrance Du Bois fragrance i known is Santal Complet, rich smelling sandalwood fragrance, with coconut, vanilla and natural smelling lemon.
What a chance, thank you all
    USA, rarely Paris France

  • Enjoyed the article and nice to learn some info about Pearls. Haven’t tried anything from Fragrance du Bois yet. Heritage is interesting and I’d like a chance to try it. Thanks for the Draw. Ca

  • Jovoy Paris , as we all know is the best niche boutique in the world, there’s no question about it. That’s where i first saw , and smell Fragrance Du Bois fragrances. I later bought samples of the most impressive ones.
Heritage is a throwback to a different era , it’s so high-class, it’s on a different level. To me it starts fresh, tart greenness is so strong, i feel like I’m chewing lime peel. In the base is woody, with all natural oud and sandalwood , with smoke, note Dana never mentioned in her review.
Santal Complet in my opinion in the best smelling Fragrance Du Bois , on my skin is really sweet, like a desert. Oddly enough to me smells pretty similar to the famous Coconut Tres Leches dessert.
    Thanks for the top opportunity
    Cheers from Scotland

  • Amazing review,i found really interesting the story or history of the pearl jewelry.I have never tried any Fragrance du Bois fragrances( i hope this fragrance is going to be the first).I live in a small place called Skydra in Greece

  • It is a great review, as always. And the photos are just amazing! I never tried any Fragrance du Bois perfume before, but always is a first 😀 Regards from Romania, EU

  • What a interesting information about pearl!! I enjoyed description of Heritage. Although I’ve never tested FdB, but read about its beauty and especially about very high quality of ingredients.
I love aldehyde in perfumery. So I would like to win this beautiful perfumes.
    I am from Armenia.

  • Exquisite review by Dana
Working so much lately, especially lately, and I really need a vacation. Sitting on top of a wooden bench, on the beach, on a wild island , drinking freshly squeezed bergamot juice, just enjoying time and resting. That’s what I imagined after reading Dana take on Heritage.
I have a sample of New York Intense , spicy woody and fruity goodness, top tier fragrance, the only Fragrance Du Bois I know.
Appreciate Dana review, and the giveaway campaign‍

  • How is difficult, hard pearl production. Thanks for information. I enjoyed description of Heritage too!
Flowers, aldehyde, musk, sandalwood and natural oud !!!! – sound beautiful.
And this phase “There’s calm and there’s quiet here; there’s beauty; there’s peace” – so intrigued!
I’m not familiar with Fragrance du Bois. It us so sad (

  • Another wonderful article from Dana! I wasn’t familiar with this release, but it sounds amazing. The educational part about the creation, history, and symbolic meaning of the pearl was very interesting. It sound like this is a very elegant, sophisticated and contemporary perfume I would love to wear in the spring and on a date.

I have heard many great things about Fragrance Du Bois. Especially recently with its release of Demi Nuit which sounds wonderful as well.
    Greetings from the UK.

  • I especially enjoyed reading about the long procedure of the creation, harvesting, and processing of the pearls. Also it was fascinating to read the rich description of how the scent develops from the soft aldehydic opening, through the floral heart to reach a woody base.
Fragrance du Bois seems to be a very luxurious house. I haven’t tried any of their creations, as they don’t have any stores in Greece, where I live.

  • An absolutely STUNNING review that able to envelop me in the scent without me even smelling it. Genius to compare the scent to pearls given that the fragrance has such a clean, aldehyec scent to it. “the scent fuses with woody tones and brightens in a very personal way, echoing both one’s expected natural musks and steaming skin after a salty, bay leaf bath.” I adore scents that blend in with the natural chemistry with the body beautifully. Now I will HAVE to check out more Fragrance Du Bois scents.

    I reside in CA, USA.

Thank you for the beautiful review dana. I often feel that we are olfactory relatives.

I really liked the other imprssions notes that you added there. They are so unique to your reviews and give me a little more insight into fragrances that are difficult to understand.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • So much of the brilliance of CaFleureBon lies in the way your writers find exactly the right metaphor to describe a scent. There is nothing in the note breakdown of Heritage to link it directly to pearls (not even an aquatic note), but Dana persuasively sees the pearl as the embodiment of the mood and ethos of this fragrance. It may sometimes involve a bit of rhetorical sleight of hand, but I love it nonetheless. I have not tried any Fragrance du Bois fragrances.. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • “As time goes by, I get the indelible feeling I’m smelling…my best self.” How beautifully poignant. I have tried and loved Heritage.
    Geoff in U.S.

  • I haven’t tried anything from the brand and im looking forward to do so. I have no idea what watery florals that were mentioned smell like. The impression i got from the review is that the we talking about a soft soapy feminine leaning fragrance. Im from EU

  • I love Dana’s ability to translate a scent into such vivid imagery that you can understand and follow along with her , it always feels like you are discovering the scent yourself.

I’ve tried everything from the house and they have so many gems , amber intense and velvet amber being my favourites.

    I’m from Israel.

  • Michael Prince says:

What I found interesting about Dana’s review of Fragrance Du Bois Heritage is the backstory and history of pearls. How patience and persistence is needed to find natural pearls. Heritage seems to have that clean and musky aquatic nature to it along with a beautiful Vanilla and Natural Oud combo. I love how Dana’s alwaya ties a knowledge lesson into the fragrance she is reviewing. I have tried Santal Complet and New York 5th Ave. I am from the USA.

  • I love Dana’s reviews on fragrances, and I am fascinated by the way she can make me “feel” a perfume by just describing it. The comparison between Heritage and a pearl is so beautiful and mesmerizing. I haven’t tried any Fragrance du Bois perfume before. All my bests from Romania, EU.

  • Every review offered by dana, is a journey in which she grabs your soul and doesn’t let go until you’ve seen everything there was to be seen. I learnt a lot and I dreamed even more. Thank you. Hugs, from Romania.

  • I have never experienced a perfume that could evoke such noble feelings…I’m quite a rookie when it comes to perfume. If this scent smells 1% as refined as Dana’s review is eloquent, then this might be truly a perfume to elevate your presence and your mood, not just decorate them. Thank you for the opportunity to experience it. I live in Greece, EU.

  • Pearls are always fascinating, like finding hidden treasure. I find it interesting that some will dive 150 times a day, that’s impressive! I’ve tried a few from this house, London oud being my favorite.

  • I have never tried any Fragrance du Bois but I love aldehydes and the idea of licking a stone statue! I’m in the UK.

  • the idea of pain shuttered me. maybe it is true that everything that is beautiful is consolidated on pain and hurt. OUD BLEU INTENSE is my favorite, maybe because I love to see people going after their dreams as Guillaume Flavigny did. Thank you.

  • I’d be curious in smelling a fragrance associated with pearls – I like pearls, but not round and perfect – is Heritage round and perfect? 🙂
I live in Europe and never tried FdB before.

  • The most luxurious review written yet! Good job Dana. Fragrance du Bois is a pearl in fragrance industry. I had a chance of wearing some scents by FdB but never own one unfortunately. I know it’s weird, but when i think of this fragance i think of a song “One Day” by Hans Zimmer – beautiful, peaceful, xtremely well composed and full of emotions. This is a kind of fragrance that takes you to another level of fragrance world, it elevates you to the top of it. I don’t know if i am worthy enought to wear it, but i am ready to find out. I learned from Dana’s review things I didn’t know about pearl jewelry and perfume jewelry from Fragrance du Bois, Heritage that I would like to feel in the air and on the skin … I am from Romania ,EU.

  • The complexity of a pearl in three feminine nouns, the permanence of patience and pain. Fragrance du Bois Heritage, a heritage of permanence!

  • Who else would have thought about analysing the symbolism of a pearl, other than dana? Thank you for the amazing review!
I have never tried Fragrance du Bois, however, after reading this review I am sold!
    Keep up the amazing work,

  • The connection between pearl and Heritage is fascinating. I wonder how the oud plays it’s role in this perfume. Thanks for the opportunity. (Bangladesh & UK)

  • I love the clarity and efortless knowledge behind Dana’s review. It’s a real delight to talk pearls, I love them. I have not tried any perfume from this creator. I’m from Romania.

Such a wonderfully put together and transporting review of a fragrance I can only dare hope I’ll experience one day. • I enjoyed this review because I love everything about pearls, reading about them, looking at photos, and of course wearing them…I also manufacture my own pearl necklaces and bracelets and earrings, there’s quite a fascination there for me. I never tried any Fragrance du Bois perfume but I have some samples on the way so I will meet them soon. 🙂
Thanks for the beautiful article and wonderful giveaway.

  • The thing I really enjoy when reading Dana’s reviews is the knowledgeable introduction that sets the mood for the very soul of the fragrance, one so vividly described that I already know how I’d photograph the bottle before even smelling the fragrance. Inspiring!

  • Great review Dana!
Now I am very curious to smell this fragrance because I wanna know how pearls smell 🙂
I have not yet tried any Fragrance Du Bois but this will be my first one to test because I am really curious about it with the pearl inspiration.

    I live in Romania.

  • Thank you Dana for another detailed review and the history of pearls. I’ve only tried Oud Vert Intense from Fragrance Du Bois and I absolutely love it and use it for special occasions 🙂 I’d love to experience the peace of Fragrance du Bois Heritage. I’m in USA

  • I always like a history lesson and Dana, whom I have been watching for about 2 years, always delivers. I have many perfumes in my collection but none of this caliber. I hope that one day I can sample it and experience Dana’s description. Cheers from Romania, Europe!

  • I thank you all, humbly, for your kind messages. They reinforce the very idea of this article that pearls—and the discrete shine of a work well done—are notions that transcend time and culture.
