Roads go ever ever on,
Under cloud and under star.
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen,
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green,
And trees and hills they long have known.
” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

When a new and unique talent emerges in the populous niche and indie fragrance community, word travels fast. One might say we “spray it forward.” Browsing YouTube channels late one night, I stumbled on an interview on the excellent channel My2Scents where host Brian Lindsay was chatting with a newly-established, Wisconsin-based indie perfumer named Michael Schrammel of For the Scent of It. Always excited to discover a new house, I immediately purchased a sample pack and shortly thereafter, full bottles of my favorites, among them the exceptional Folk Tale and the sparkling, swashbuckling Black Sails. Michael’s latest release, For the Scent of It Molten Ambra, is equally-exceptional and further establishes this gifted young artist as a rising star. I “sprayed it forward” to our Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen who featured Michael in the CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery Series on September 21, 2022

According to Michael, as described on his Etsy shop, Molten Ambra “comes from a deep love for amber in perfumery. It began with a molten amber accord I created where I envisioned a hot amber sliding down a mountain like lava. I wanted to extend on that idea and build upon it while keeping much of the same aroma from the original accord. This amber perfume is all about deep woods and spices drenched in resinous amber. Perfect for keeping the cold in check.” The perfect way to describe this stunning and evocative composition!

With the first wearing of For the Scent of It Molten Ambra (and admittedly influenced by the illustrative description), my mind raced with images of effulgent lava. Having just finished the new Lord of the Rings series, “The Rings of Power,” I immediately thought of the title sequence in which glowing molten metal surges forward and around, forging the letters which comprise the title (and later, the one ring to rule them all). Michael’s proprietary molten amber accord is glorious; above it cinnamon, coriander and pepper dance like fiery sparks, creating movement and atomic depth. I was momentarily reminded of Tom Ford’s Plum Japonais, the long-discontinued masterpiece which, to me, always conjured images of melted gold.

The adventurous Molten Ambra takes us to Mordor, but more importantly, it takes us back home. Molten lava turns to simmering vanilla. It’s comforting, enveloping. In the heart and base, smooth woods, resins and musk are folded into the vanilla, surrounding the wearer in warmth and repose. Michael Schrammel, who once worked on an assembly line which made parts for Ford Trucks, has created a serious perfume to rival the likes of Tom Ford.

At $80 US for a 30ml bottle of Molten Ambra, a parfum at 26% concentration, it is—in comparison—easy to support an upcoming indie artist who makes each batch by hand. Molten Ambra has excellent longevity (over 12 hours) and projection.

Notes: Cinnamon, Coriander, Pepper, Molten Amber, Iris, Texas and Atlas Cedar, Sandalwood, Resins, Musk, Vanilla

For full disclosure, I was gifted a sample of Molten Ambra, but soon thereafter, I purchased a full bottle from Michael’s Etsy Shop

  • Wow, this sounds like a stunner! I adore Tom Fords Plum Japonais so I think this sounds like it would totally be up my alley. I would love to win! Thank you for the chance. From CT, USA

  • What intrigues me the most which was said by the reviewer was his comment that after receiving the sample he went out and purchased a full bottle. US

  • I have a sample of this and it’s a very gorgeous amber perfume. The imagery of molten amber sliding down the mountain is perfect. Congrats to For the Scent of It on another excellent release! In US.

  • Amber is my favorite genre of perfumery, The Lord Of the Rings my favorite movie franchise (and book series), and lately my daughter has been painting and drawing volcano after volcano for me. Is it meant to be? I’d love to try this Indie perfumer’s work.

    I live in Texas, USA.

I live in the united States & would be honored at a chance to win this. I absolutely love amber & can’t get enough of it. The fact this gem is at whopping 26% concentration, has my juices flowing! This fragrance sounds right up my alley! I can’t wait to try this!!

  • I’m always interested in a new spiced amber scent and frankly, your connecting it with the Lord of the Rings just drew me right in! I live in the Continental US.

  • I just tried a sample of Molten Ambra and it’s a really effective amber. What stood out to me immediately is the balance of smoky resins with the fragrance’s more plush side; one half of the fragrance reads as ritual incense, but that’s countered by rich spice. I agree with Michael—Schrammel’s work is very impressive, and the way Molten Ambra dries down to deep vanilla is wonderful. Thanks for the review, Michael.

I’m in the Continental United States and I’d love to win a bottle of Molten Ambra.

  • I love Michael’s work!! This one sounds really good since I love ambers and am always looking for a new one. I enjoyed the LOTR reference and interested to see how the spices like cinnamon play into the amber. Thanks for the draw. In VA, USA.

  • Seems to be a great smelling fragrance perfect for fall and winter. My perfume-cabinet has a serious lack of ambers, so it would be great to win this one. Great review on this one, Michael.

    USA.

  • I’ve never seen TLOTR. I do love amber and 12-hour longevity. The notes describe a winner in my mind. New Jersey, USA

  • I read the profile that Michelyn Camen wrote about Michael.
Fascinating what childhood smells while in the woods can bring to us.

I would like to be part of this Giveaway.
Good luck to Michael and his line of perfumes.
    Cheers from Massachusetts.

  • As a fan of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, I like the name Molten Ambra. The notes sound perfect for this fragrance. Iris and Resins caught my attention. Thanks for introducing this brand to me and for the draw. Mich USA

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Big fan of amber, and I like to support independent artists, the sound of amber always confortable but in this case sounds wonderful, and I live in the USA

  • foreverscents says:

I love perfumes that suggest molten and resinous warmth. I like warm and fiery notes like cinnamon and amber. I mourn the discontinuation of Plum Japonais. But I feel we have a most worthy successor with Molten Ambra.
    I live in Massachusetts.

  • I liked the perfumer’s quote describing the inspiration behind Molten Ambra. I also enjoyed reading Michelyn’s introduction. It’s telling that both Michelyn and Michael bought their own full bottles after trying the samples of Molten Ambra. The imagery from The Rings of Power was interesting. I like the notes in Molten Ambra and it seems to be a great winter perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. I live in the continental United States.

  • It is always amazing to discover new artisan perfumers, since I think they make perfumes that realy shine and deliver something different from what most brands do.
I am a huge amber and vanilla lover and I think I would love this one. I really liked that the perfumer also makes each batch by hand, that is just mindblowing. I hope to try it.
    USA here.

  • As someone who already loves his work- his Stone Roses is incredible and unique, Forbidden Fig (love fig and it’s in my favorites), and his Peony was delicious…I am very excited to try his new Amber offering! I am actually awaiting a sample of Black Sail and Warrior right now! I think Folk Tales will be my next purchase. Exciting blends.

I love the imagery. Molten amber like lava is imaginative and new. Spices add to the warmth of the amber and vanilla dry down is something that I think will smell amazing. Excellent review. I would love to try it because I love ambers. USA

  • Michael!! ❤️❤️❤️ This perfume reminds you of Plum Japonais!?!?! Sign me up! Sounds Amazing!!! I love labdanum (and so amber perfumes in general). Molten Ambra sounds Gorgeous! Thank you for the generous opportunity!!! USA ❤️

  • “Perfect for keeping the cold in check”: yes, this sounds beautiful! I love the conceit of molten amber, and the notes sound great.
    WV, USA

  • I’m surprised there aren’t more fragrances inspired by The Lord of the Rings. There’s so many references in there (elves, trolls, Sauron) that would lend themselves to olfactory interpretation. A molten amber from the depths of Mordor sounds delightful. The spices, woods and vanilla seem to support the molten amber accord well. I would live to try it! MD, USA.

  • PhillySniff143 says:

Big fan of amber. But I’ve heard so many good things about the brand, quality and longevity. I live in Philadelphia Pennsylvania

  • Love MIchael’s work, Wasteland Warrior and Blackwood Sun are my current faves and I am excited to try his newest offerings. The idea of a spicy amber from him intrigues me because he did that so well in Wasteland Warrior. In that one it was a dry and arid spice much like something Tauer would do. Molten Ambre seems like it would be taking it in a slightly sweeter direction due to the vanilla. Would be amazing to win. Hopefully I won’t miss the date this time! Reading here in North Carolina.

  • I have heard of this new house and it sounds really exciting. I love a great fall and winter scent and amber is a fantastic base note. In maryland.

  • Oh, how lovely this perfume sounds! Ambery, spicy, vanilla and woody, how can you go wrong with those notes? Answer; You can’t. Hopefully I can win and try this perfume and brand out.

I live in Sweden, but I have a friend in the US who can accept it for me and then “spray it forward” 🙂

  • MikeisBright says:

Oh wow! This sounds amazing! Kudos for the Lord of the Rings reference, how could I not immediately want to try this fragrance?
Im most intrigued by the cinnamon note. It sounds like it will be a hot and spicy cinnamon reminiscent of red hot candies, rather than the dry and powdery cinnamon that is already abundant in a lot of fragrances. I love cinnamon and amber so this sounds perfect!! I’m in the continental US.

  • I have wanted to sample this house after reading about Mr. Schrammel in Profiles of Amercian Perfumery. The bottle art is nice as well. All of the notes sound wonderful. Thank you for the draw as always! In the US. NY specifically.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m intrigued to try this fragrance for multiple reasons, e.g. when Michael describes it as “This amber perfume is all about deep woods and spices drenched in resinous amber.” I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great giveaway. It was really fun to learn about this local perfumer from CFB, especially because he’s based in my state.

I loved that this fragrance has inspiration in my current favorite TV show. The concept of an amber based on the lava flowing out of Mordor, is really captured in the spicy notes, resins and amber that is used in this fragrance.

Also, the pricing and the labels are excellent.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The performance on this one sounds great which is not easy to come by especially at this price point. I am especially intrigued by Molten ambra because of the part where Michael says she was reminded of Tom Ford’s Plum Japonais which i adore! The notes sound right up my alley and the way it was described sounds lovely and i will deffinatly be purchasing it if i dont win this one.

    Im in North Carolina, USA

  • kelvinz6820 says:

I love how the fragrance is compared to glory and radiates a powerful sillage that gets the attention of everyone. I feel like this is a fragrance that can make me stand out from the crowd, and I would love to try it. I live in NYC, USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Michael! What intrigues me about Molten Ambra is Michael’s description of it as reminiscent of the lava from the Lord of the Rings’ that forged the one ring, with it’s molten amber accord and fiery combination of cinnamon and pepper and simmering vanilla, evoking movement and dance. And yes I’m in the Continental United States.

  • Michael Prince says:

What intrigues me about Molten Ambra first is the note breakdown which looks spicy, warm, and comforting with even a reference comparing this fragrance to Plum Japonais which is a personal favorite of mine. Michael Schrammel has created Molten Ambra due to his big love for the note of amber in perfumery. I am also a huge fan of this note especially in the fall and winter. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I loved the lava imagery describing Molten Ambra! The notes sound delightful. It’s a perfect time of year for amber and I’m ready for it! Wishing Michael Schrammel much success! Thanks for the giveaway. In VA, USA

  • I ended up ordering a sample because of this review. Unfortunately what one calls smooth woods is sharp to another. Or perhaps it’s the “musk”? There are certain ingredients where people use those two descriptors interchangeably, and they now seem to be added to so many ambers. It would be so much easier if they were described consistently so that they could be avoided by consumers who find them uncomfortable.

Please know this isn’t a complaint about the perfume, I know some are going to love this, particularly fans of Grand Soir. It would be easier to save money and headache to be able to filter these out of my testing field easily.
