Sound of a Ricochet is one of my favorite compositions from the house of Floraiku, founded in 2017 to celebrate the beauty and simplexity of the Japanese culture. Each fragrance is visually represented by the artwork created by Victorie Cathalan, who uses mixed media- images, materials, and objects to illustrate her deepest feelings. A dragonfly (which is also Japan’s national emblem) represents our inner spiritual growth, and mysteriously appears in our lives when we are facing emotional traumas. A protagonist in the poem of “Akatombo” by Rofu Miki or “Red Dragonfly” carries symbolism throughout the entire story.

Filled with longing, the lyrics of Red Dragonfly recall a red dragonfly seen as an infant while being carried on an older sister’s shoulder. Kosaku Yamada later made the poem into a song, he was a close friend of Rofu Miki, who happened to pass away on the exact day a year after Rofu Miki death, talking about an invisible bond between two artistic souls. Sophie Labbe translates the poem and song into an evocative fragrance.

Floraiku Sound of Ricochet review

Drawing and a bottle of Sound of a  Ricochet by Olya Bar©

The opening accord of salty-sweet anise mixed with the bitterness of tonka bean is sharp and slices  through your senses; it pulls you aggressively into the perfume, only to soften and reveal the delicate beauty of soft sensual sandalwood shortly after.  Floraiku Sound of a Ricochet is a poem of textures, of layers translated into a beautiful fragrance through the artistic lens of Firmenich perfumer Sophie Labbe. Imagine the golden hour on a hot summer day viewed through the eyes of your inner-child who longs for comfort and love symbolized by the warmness of vanilla with the chocolate richness of patchouli. Tonka bean adds both depth and a pinch of much-needed astringency  in otherwise a gourmand composition. At the dry down, the perfume  slowly transitions into an intimate hug of sandalwood and vanilla, and the return to  your childhood home with all the familiar scents and objects that  you associate with happiness of the past.

Sound of A Ricochet is a beautifully layered composition that conveys the nostalgic scent of an old home, a safe haven for a child’s dreams and the absence of fears or negativity. Here is the familiar warmth of the wooden floors, the resinous and slightly balsamic scent of the lacquered furniture in the room, a spicy and comforting whiff of an antique Danzo (sandalwood carved sculpture, which was used in Japan for religious ceremonies and worship). Sound Of A Ricochet smells of both a safe haven and loneliness at once, the echo of dragonfly wings beating against the wind, a memory, a sound, a scent of longing for the past.

“The nostalgic scent of an old home” sounds like something right up my alley. Plus, I’m a fan of all the notes.

I have been meaning to try this house but haven’t yet. This perfume sounds like a great entry point.

I live in Nashville, TN USA.

  • Floraiku’s scents usually have been ethereal, in line with the Japanese philosophy of minimalism as well as the fact that heavy scents are not appreciated as perfumes in Japan, especially in public spaces. In that regard, Floraiku Sound Of A Ricochet is quite a different composition from the usual perfumes in the line, with its oriential gourmand elements. I am in US.

  • Thanks Olya for such a beautiful review.
I have never tested Floraiku perfumes, but I appreciate ideas, names and design – all are esthetic pleasure.
This perfume sound beautiful – salty anis, tnka been, sandalwood and vanilla!

What a pleasure to read Olya’s review, see her artwork photography and drowning. She did beautiful introduction to Floraiku’s Scent “Ricochet”, I found out from her review about artwork by Victories Cathalan, poem and song about dragonfly, that was inspiration for Sophie Labbe to create this evocative fragragrance. Olya’s description of “Ricochet” sounds like a beautiful gourmand, and I would love to try it!
I really love Floraiku’s creativity with flacons, packaging , theirs environment friendly and protective concept.

  • After reading Olya’s beautiful review and history lesson in Japanese culture regarding the Red Dragon, I enjoyed learning about the simplexity of this fragrance. Love all the notes and owuld love to try a bottle! Thank you for the chance, I have sampled this one and it is a favorite. California

  • I have read here a few times reviews of florahaiku but this is the best because it was based on real book and story. Sound of a Ricochet seems quite amazing

  • Great review, Olya. Most appealing to me is the marriage between the warmness of the vanilla extract and the Australian sandalwood essence. According to Floraiku’s website, Sound of a Ricochet ‘evolves on the skin like a soft wave’; with ‘soft’ being the essence of this house it seems. Never had the pleasure of trying their fragrances. VA, USA.

  • This fragrance seems like a good way to become more familiar with a high-quality tonka bean note. I’m also interested in this fragrance because I’ve heard that makes high-quality fragrances and I believe that this fragrance house is from the same people; I haven’t tried any of their releases. I also want to see what the other notes in this fragrance are like. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Ricoche sounds like what fragrances are for a safe haven and memories. Really like how the review itself gives a calming to bring you in a house to smell the resinous scents of well made furniture. Floraiku would be new to me , definitely like to smell/ win this beautiful scent.

Olya’s revir is so nice. I love the intro. It really gets you in the mood of this fragrance before she even starts talking about the notes. I like the sound of this perfume it comforting calming presence. It s interesting how she describes it as a smell of both a safe haven and loneliness at once. Very interesting and I hope I get the chance to try it! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I don’t have a favorite Floraiku perfume…but I love their bottle design. I was also struck by the simplicity of the notes, which sound like they translate into a fairly complicated scent. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • NickKnack says:

These bottles look fantastic and the concept is so unique! I love haiku’s – my mother used to travel to Japan all the time and would bring back small wooden carved objects for me. I appreciate the ties to home and the nostalgia aspect relayed by Olya really hit deep for me – I will have to check out europerfumes for some of these more unique perfumes from the house

  • What I found so compelling about Olya’s review was the idea of Sound of a Ricochet smelling “both a safe haven and loneliness at once”. That sentence prompted me to reflect on the idea of my childhood home as safe-haven and then to feel all of the heaviness and longing and tender nostalgia that thinking of the very same place can stir up. My parents still live there, but I can only visit the place it was in my childhood in my dreams. I would have a tough time choosing a favorite Floraiku composition but I am enamored of I Am Coming Home and I can’t seem to stop thinking about My Shadow on the Wall. I love Floraiku and would probably cry if I won a bottle of Sound of a Ricochet, hehe. I live in St. Louis, MO.

  • I’m a very nostalgic person so that word caught my eye. The scent of an old home makes me think of my grandmother’s house. The notes sound beautiful. I haven’t tried this house as of yet. Indiana USA

My introduction to Floraïku was when I first smelled Sound of a Ricochet , so I can say i know the fragrance well. My opinion is similar to Olya’s, but not the same. To me it’s awesome syrupy ambery vanilla and caramel mix , powdery and slightly funky. Where my opinion differs is not the smell, but the performance. I would not call it safe and intimate, to me Sound of a Ricochet is a powerful fragrance , with really good projection and longevity, strongest Floraïku for sure, i have the sample set.
Europerfumes I where I bought mine. Now to be fair I have to say sampling Floraïku is not easy, the sample set contains 11 samples only , it’s not being updated for a long time. If you want to sample all , you have to pay extra for every additional sample. $35 is the set , and $10 i paid extra for AO sample.
    Top opportunity , thanks

  • This sounds really nice. It sounds as if it can be comforting and meditative. I enjoyed learning about the inspiration for Sound of a Ricochet and the meaning of the red dragonfly and how it isbtranslated into the scent. I’ve not tried any Floraiku fragrances yet but would love to. Thanks so much for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Allison Smith says:

Great article Olya! I absolutely love Sound of a Ricochet. I also feel a nostalgic pull to this fragrance. I loved learning about the symbology of the dragonfly and how it ties to this fragrance. Hard to choose a favorite Floraiku! I’d say Sound of a Ricochet or Between Two Trees!

  • Somehow, you show how a complex impression of memory (or memory of impressions) can be interpreted through scent. It’s not all comprehensible as a single image, of something for which people already share a vocabulary.

  • constancesuze says:

I have to admit that this line really puts me off. I was originally attracted by the beautiful bottle design and many of the stories behind the fragrances speak to me, but I was distressed when it became clear that the people behind the brand are not Japanese and it isn’t made clear that there’s any cultural consultation happening.
The mining of other cultures for inspiration, the uplifting of the ‘simplexity’ of Japanese culture, all of it strikes me as very colonialist.
    Please do not enter me.

  • I enjoyed greatly the promise of this description, “Sound of A Ricochet is a beautifully layered composition that conveys the nostalgic scent of an old home, a safe haven for a child’s dreams and the absence of fears or negativity”. US

  • I enjoyed reading about the reference to a “safe haven for a child’s dreams and the absence of fears or negativity.” Floraiku’s bottles are a beautiful. I find that the scent of star anise is very comforting. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • It was interesting to learn the story of the Red Dragonfly. I’ve never tried a Floraiku Perfume, but this one sounds very comforting. I am in the US.

  • Magical. That’s what I think after reading this review — “a safe haven for a child’s dreams and the absence of fears or negativity”. The notes are so simple but the fragrance sounds so magical. Thank you for the opportunity. USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Sound of a Ricochet I believe is not overly complex , but well executed spicy , resinous vanilla fragrance. I’m really drown to similar combinations. I could be wrong, but I think all Floraïku share the same approach.
It’s also interesting how the fragrance was inspired by Japanese culture and poetry.
Floraiku is new house I need to explore
    Thanks for the generosity.

I’m well familiar with Memo Paris older brother , still One Umbrella for Two is the only Floraiku I’ve smelled, spring , early summer rainy weather fragrance.

    All profiles I already follow.

  • Lovely review and artwork of a beautiful bottle of Sound of A Ricochet by Floraiku. I love Japan and Japanese culture, but I didn’t know that dragonfly is the national emblem of Japan. From the small list of notes, it appears to be a very simple and elegant perfume. I haven’t tried anything by Floraiku, yet. The olfactory imagery of the comfort of childhood and a cozy home is very well captured by Olya in this review. Thanks for an excellent review and a generous draw. I am in the USA.

  • >>(…) an intimate hug of sandalwood and vanilla, and the return to your childhood home with all the familiar scents and objects that you associate with happiness of the past.<< who wouldn't want that? i know i do! (plus: these floraiku bottles are to die for beautiful.)

  • “Sound of A Ricochet is a beautifully layered composition that conveys the nostalgic scent of an old home, a safe haven for a child’s dreams, and the absence of fears or negativity. ” I feel that many of us are looking and longing for a safe haven today as the world seems to be amiss much chaos. This review was a delight to read and I am certain that it will provide a safe harbor for whoever should win.

  • Trinity33 says:

What a gorgeous bottle! The notes sound comforting and nostalgic. Patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla are very grounding notes for me. And I’m so excited to see anise in this composition. It’s a note I live and don’t find very often. I have not tried any Floraika perfumes before, Commenting from MD, USA.

  • a poem of textures of the golden hour on a hot summer sounds romantic. Seriosly compares brand with traditional culture is big help for imagination, and that’s why review sounds lovely. Never tried this house but review intriguing. From CT, US

  • I have to admit the anise was an unexpected note for a Sino-inspired perfume, but it still does sound lovely. Sandalwood was definitely part of what I imagined and I’m happy to see it featured in this fragrance. I I’ve never tried anything from this house before, but it seems like they have some beautiful fragrances. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Floraiku is one hose that mesmerizes me, and that I did not have a chance to try until now. I don’t have an explanation for that, just a lack of synchronicity between me and my shopping lists. I would love each of Floraiku fragrances, I’m sure, because they have stories, and great notes. CA, USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

Firstly, I liked the drawing she did, showing that the girl gots skills. You go, girl! Next, she made this delicate fragrance coke alive, highlighting it’s calming and comforting nature. And she was spot-on (IMHO), because the notes do lend themselves to that. Now this fragrance is something that could have been highlighted as one that would be good to wear during these harsh, depressing Covid times.

I have yet to try a Floraïku, but there are a lot that I saw on the site that I want to sample – Just A Rose, AO, The Mountain Standing Still, First Dream of the Year, In the Dark, Volcanic Flowers, etc

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • patrick_348 says:

I like the idea of the gourmand notes being balanced by woods and spices and resins. I don’t like vanilla notes when they overpower everything around them and it appears this is not the case here. This sounds both slightly exotic and wearable at the same time. I have read a lot about Floraiku, but have never sampled any of their scents. I am in the US in NC.

  • Deangnosis says:

Spicy, comforting, nostalgic scent, sounds lovely and just the type of scent that I’m always drawn too. Wearing fragrances like this evokes scent memories that conjures soothing warmth for the soul. These are three of my favorite notes and the description has me very interested to smell the multi-textured layers.

  • The bottle is incredibly beautiful!!! I love the gorgeous cap! I was so moved by the description of this perfume and how it is summed up as “conveys the nostalgic scent of an old home, a safe haven for a child’s dreams and the absence of fears or negativity”. The notes couldn’t be more comforting and soothing. I have never tried any fragrances from this perfume house but I am extremely drawn to this fragrance, after reading the review.
    I live in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the great review Olya.

I loved the simplicity of Olga’s review. Like the notes of the perfume, the lines from the poem pull you into this review, which beautifully exposes the character of this fragrance.

The photos in this are quite nice, especially with the golden butterfly.

I haven’t had the opportunity to smell anything from this house.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Japanese culture and traditions i do admit i know little, to nothing about. I was not aware dragonfly is Japan’s national emblem , good to know.
It was also quite interesting to read about the”Akatombo” poem , the vanilla with the chocolate coming from the patchouli, and the creamy sandalwood. I have to say Floraïku Sound of a Ricochet is such a delightful and tempting fragrance.
Thanks to Olya and Europerfumes for the draw

  • Michael Prince says:

Olya did an amazing review on Floraiku Sound Of A Ricochet. She says it has a cozy home feel to it and describes it in amazing detail. A resinious, spicy, balsamic, creamy sandalwood, and vanillic fragrance that definitely reminds you of home. This sounds like the kind of fragrance I gravitate towards. I haven’t tried anything from Floraiku and would love the opportunity to have this fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • petergigov says:

Olya take on Sound of A Ricochet well represents the character of “Japan” inspired perfume . Calm , relaxing, slightly woody and fruity , sweet more intimate and comfortable fragrance. Not every fragrance needs to be a screamer , if it’s made really well like Sound of A Ricochet.
I remember it was mentioned on Cafleurebon that Floraïku and Memo Paris are two brands under the same umbrella. African Leather, made by Memo is cozy date time scent I’m well aware of, I had to buy it because of its high compliment factor and versatile characteristics. Floraiku “siblings” fragrances i have not smelled yet.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I enjoyed Olya’s review because she used so much wonderful imagery of what the scent evokes for her. It’s such a beautiful review with the images of dragonfly wings beating against the wind and the warm, familiar comfort of furniture in a room.

I have unfortunately not been able to try out any perfumes from Floraiku and so do not have a favorite.

  • Salty-sweet , warmed by vanilla and chocolate, Sound of a Ricochet sounds great.Delightful and no doubt posh fragrance, with best of the best ingredients i believe.
Usually I’m not impressed by the look of the bottle, but I do admit I really like the colors, the cap itself looks like a piece of art , all Floraïku bottles are so special. Well done
    Thanks, in US

Olya Bar take on Floraiku Sound of a Ricochet reminded me of making , and later eating Salted Caramel and Chocolate Drizzle Cake , while sitting right next to the sandalwood carved sculpture of the antique Danzo .
