Five Perfume Resolutions for 2023 + Xerjoff Marquee (2012) giveaway

Perfume Resolutions for 2023

Five Perfume Resolutions for 2023

Last year I had a plan. And a guide. An introverted’s guide to New Year’s Eve. Starring Ormonde Jayne (Ormonde Woman), Atelier des Ors (Lune Feline), Der Duft (Bubble), Xerjoff (Pikovaya Dama) & Sticky Fingers from Francesca Bianchi, the guide was published here, on CaFleureBon one year ago and is still very much valid.

This year, I thought I would make just some minor changes to my picks, and turn them into five  perfume resolutions for 2023:

Perfume Resolutions for 2023 #1: Experiment, open your mind and nose

Ormonde Jayne Prive official image

“Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better” goes Beckett’s mantra. I pride myself on always keeping an open mind when it comes to fragrance. But do I open my soul to things my rational side refuses? Hmm, not so often. Besides roses, which I absolutely adore, I have always approached florals from a safe distance, seduced by their versatility, always willing to learn about them, but somehow always thinking in the back of my mind that florals are for me just to admire but never love. Ormonde Woman from Ormonde Jayne, my pick for last year is my mysterious witchy potion that contains everything that I love in a fragrance: warm spices, deep green mossy woods, and a dusky darkness veil of comforting familiarity.

Stepping away from the path always traveled, my resolution this year carries me to the flowery meadows, so my pick is Prive (created in 2018 by Linda Pilkington), that was a blind buy, on a whim, that I was sure I was going to pass forward and gift to a friend after maximum 2 uses. But surprise! Prive is a silky veil of perfectly rendered flowers, so eerily flawless, they seem to be an AI-generated bouquet that never withers.

Five Perfume Resolutions for 2023 #2: Not everything has to be complicated. Learn to have fun!

Atelier des Ors PINK ME UP official image

Last year, my choice from Atelier des Ors was Lune Feline – a resinous, woody, dark, intensely sensual, and deeply satisfying dose of smoke that lit the same pleasure nerves as smoking once did. Guilt-free.  This year, Atelier des Ors made my choice so easy with Pink Me Up. (Marie Salamagne, 2022). Pink me up is a frivolously delicious cup of champagne bursting at the seams with blackberry and roses. Plus it has gold particles. Inside the pink bottle! (insert “it’s so fluffy pretty I’m gonna die” audible here). Hedonistic, sparkly, loud, fun, and more bubbly than a teenage werewolf girl wearing pink Dr. Martens, this one is an invitation not to take anything too seriously and just have some fun.

Notes: Bergamotorange flower petals, champagne NaturePrint©Rose Centifolia, Blackberry, Iris,  PatchouliMusk.

Perfume Resolutions for 2023 #3: Use fragrance as a mood booster.

Perfume resolutions for 2023

Der Duft Privilege, official image

Instead of the fizz of champagne and Bubble(s), this year I chose Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer, 2022) that Michelyn described as a path to an imaginary happy place in the Best of 2022 awards and in Karl’s top 10 as “Nature in abstraction”. I absolutely agree – this is an instant pick-me-up, elevate my spirit, bubble (sorry, I just had to slip in the pun) of comfort & joy that summons a haven that smells of fruits, soft woods, and musk.

Notes: Vegetal notes, Galbanum, Carrot seed, Blackcurrant, Rhubarb, Marine notes, Mineral notes, Lily of the valley, Iris, Cedarwood, Paraguayan guaiac wood, Palo Santo, Haitian Amyris, Ambroxan, Cashmeran, Ambrette, Musk

Perfume Resolutions for 2023  #4 Life’s short. Ride those unicorns!

Leaving behind the Ice Queen diamond cold elegance of Xerjoff Pikovaya Dama, which I only wear on carefully curated occasions and with very specific outfits, as I feel I have to “match” its energy, this year I say nope! I choose Marquee (2012)- an atmospheric potion with secret notes that elevates any Greta Garbo-ish “I want to be alone” pouty mood into an “all lights on me” unapologetically glamorous diva moment. So I plan to wear my rare and precious unicorns even when I’m in my Slavic Adidas tracksuit.

Perfume Resolutions for 2023 #5: Talk about what you love. Spread your light. Spay it Forward

Francesca Bianchi Under my skin,

Francesca Bianchi, Under my skin, official image

“Are my thoughts
revealed to others?
I dreamed my jeweled comb box
was open to the light.”
(Lady Otomo No Sakanoe)

Any declarative and public display of affection feels as “natural and effortless” to me as Data dancing without his updates synced to the mothership. Talking about my love for certain perfumes leaves me feeling as uncomfortable as having pages of my diary open, for everyone to see, and I usually quote Neruda’s poem: “I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul” when refusing to elaborate on certain topics. And although I understand that my inability of talking about my feeling without making jokes is a coping mechanism, it’s still difficult to make significant progress. For example, my favorite perfume of all time, my alfa and omega, is Magie Noire from Lancome – a perfume I still find impossible to put into words. Also, it was hard to write about Dolce Vita as that review is more of a trip down memory lane, and trying to unravel Black Orchid was more of an exercise of introspection. Overall, the last year was a concentrated dose of “exposure therapy” for me – in more areas than one –  but only by taking the path less traveled, comes growth and light. And light can not only be maintained, but spread, I’ve gratefully learned.  Previously, I chose the escapist Blade Runner-type irreverence of Sticky Fingers. This year I turned, again, to the magic (SUR)realism of Under my Skin, a perfume that has been my skin of choice for more years than I care to count, a perfume that raises mirrors, lights matches in the dark and makes you look. “I offer you explanations of yourself, theories about yourself, authentic and surprising news of yourself.”

Notes: grapefruit, lavender, black pepper, spices, Bulgarian rose, carnation, iris butter, musk, castoreum, ambergris, leather accord, costus, tonka bean, tolu balsam, Peru balsam, sandal Mysore, vanilla, tree moss.

May 2023 be a great scented adventure.

Disclosure: All perfumes from my collection (except for Privilege, received from Der Duft, thank you so much!)

As usual, Nicoleta delights us with various very feminine, elegant perfumes, some old school such as Dolce Vita, Magie Noir, versus Sticky Fingers, Under my Skin
which all make you think of romantic sexual experiences.

  • I loved her resolutions. They were absolutely great. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. My perfume resolution for this year is probably to ramp up my fragrance collection a little bit with some interesting gourmand perfumes and I’d also love to buy some new scented candles.

  • I feel like these resolutions can easily be applied not only to perfumes but to live decisions in general. To be open, to take things easy, to dream. Especially I like the idea to use the perfume as a mood booster. Usually it’s over way around (I mean sometimes not pleasant consequences can spoil pretty good perfume). I think I will try to stick maybe to to all 5, but for one or two this year. I live in France, EU

  • I love the idea of going a bit experimental with sampling perfumes…I keep seeing Francesca Bianchi perfumes on different lists! Makes me want to try them. Not from the EU, so not eligible for the giveaway. Good luck!

  • Great perfume resolutions, Nicoleta. It’s certainly a good idea to expand your fragrance palette, being a little hedonistic once in a while and use this hobby we all know and love to light us up on a day where everything feels dark. I couldn’t have done it any better myself, and so; I will steal yours

I live in Sweden, EU 🙂

  • This is an amazing giveaway, Nicoleta. I applaud and thank you for giving up your bottle for the purpose of this giveaway, because I would not dare to do such things myself. I do live in the EU, so hopefully I can win 🙂

  • You have some really good ideas for Five Perfume Resolutions of 2023. To try new things, and having your mind and nose open for what they offer is important and something I too should adopt. Your third resolution of using fragrances as a mood booster is something I haven’t really thought of. Fragrances can transport us to another place, and bring us away from whatever pain troubles us, that is one aspect of perfume that I feel is not spoken of enough. I don’t have any perfume resolutions myself, but it was a joy to read yours, Nicoleta.

This is a truly awesome giveaway, it is very kind of you to gift your FB of Marquee away like this. I live in Sweden/EU.

My perfume resolution this year is to introduce my 16 year old son to the world of olfactory magic.

As always, Nicoleta inspires me to find a verse and have that as skin for a scented mood. Today I’ll be wearing Osmonde Jayne’ Woman and read about faerie.

Thank you for your generosity. I live in Portugal.

  • Great article, Nicoleta. It was truly a joy to read, and I took many things with me that I hope I’ll be able to implement in my own life this year. “Not everything has to be complicated. Learn to have fun!” How true. This doesn’t only apply to perfume, but one’s whole lifestyle. Everyone needs a bit of fun once in a while, right?

My only perfume resolution is to slow down; To realize that I don’t have to buy every new shiny toy that I lay my eyes on. Of course, I will still buy some new perfume, but only after careful consideration and making sure that I do not have something similar already.

Amazing giveaway, Nicoleta, and I wholeheartedly thank you for offering up your bottle for the purpose of it.

    Writing from the EU.

  • No particular fragrance resolution, but mainly, what I would like to do is what I want to do every year – test more and get to experience other brands, hopefully some that are indie and that are not overly marketed and advertised, those which fly under the radar of most of us.
Thank you and Happy New Year!

  • Nicoleta’s resolutions are so universal, I feel like we could all learn from them in life in general. Accept failure, learn to have fun, enjoy the precious and valuable things, spread goodness…quite a healthy set of principles.
My main resolution for this year (even though not strictly related to perfume) is to accept flaws in people, places and things. Everyone and everything is beautiful and who am I to decide if it is, or should be perfect? Just enjoy the variety in everything and embrace the differences.

  • Love this! Love using perfume as a mood booster, Lait et Chocolat is my fave for that. Would love to have some comfort cherry for this too. Would love to win, im from EU.

  • Great article- don’t qualify for the drawing but wanted to mention how much I enjoyed reading this! Under My Skin was one of my favorite discoveries of 2022 in the sublime oil.

  • Such a fun article and generous giveaway, Nicoleta! All 5 resolutions are great, but I was the most drawn toward the fifth one. I have already been quite adventurous, easy-going, and wearing fragrances as I please and as mood changers/ booters. My resolution for 2023 is to thoroughly sample fragrances before dedicating myself to a whole bottle.
I appreciate Nicoleta’s effort to write about the most loved scents. I also lack words when trying to describe my favorite perfums, maybe because wearing them conjures such a multidimensional and abstract experience.
Thank you, Nicoleta, for sharing your passion with the world.
    Greetings from Slovenia (EU).

  • I loved all of Nicoleta’s resolutions especially the ones about unicorns and using fragrances as mood boosters!! I also enjoy reading her deep, heart felt reviews. Bummer that I am not eligible for this draw, being in the USA, but on a positive note for this year, I am increasing the odds for my EU friends 🙂 Happy New Year!!

  • Nicoleta!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Love your perfume resolutions!!! I remember your article from last year! Bubble is wonderful and I’ve enjoyed wearing it this holiday season!!! Kir Royale bliss! I’m so excited to try Der Duft’s new bottle, Privilege!
What a fantastic prize! Unicorns must be worn & experienced! Life is fleeting! ❤️
I think I’ll go put on some one of my vintage fragrances! Thank you for a wonderful review and giveaway!!! USA ❤️

  • I live in the US. I liked the resolution #2, about having fun. I end up over-analyzing the fragrances (and life in general) which takes joy out things!!! Gotta do less of that!

  • Happy New Year and thanks for sharing your thoughts on your resolutions, Nicoleta!
My resolution this year is to travel to Paris and go to Jovoy store and testing as many as I can.
    Fingers crossed!
    Thanks!!

  • Nice resolutions! I personally agree with all of them (they can as well be my own), but wear the unicorns more often would be my number 1. In general, I tend to wear the ones I adore less and the ones that are just ok, more. Which is stupid!
    I’m in the EU.

  • I very much agree on some of the resolutions made by Nicoleta, expecially experiment new perfumes, open the nose and mind and use perfume as a mood booster.
Expecially according with the first resolution I am willing to try perfumes with more naturals, expecially oud and flowers, to open my nose and learn new things.
Hope to win this beautiful unicorn.

Thank you for the kind giveaway and the the wonderful list Nicoleta.

I want to keep my mind open this year to fragrances that I do not traditionally enjoy and sample more.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Thank You, Nicoleta, for your wonderful resolutions – it feels like the main idea is to stay true to yourself, enjoy your life and perfume only reflects your inner shining to the outside world. Your choices are classy, feminine and joyful, and I feel a special connection to Ormonde Jayne creations too. My resolution for 2023 would be: if you enjoy the fragrance, you are not obliged to wear it – sometimes only just a little sniff will brighten up your day and cure your soul. I will remind myself that fragrances are not only for wearing, but for therapy as well.

  • emorandeira says:

I must confess that I have taken all these new Year’s resolutions for me:
    – I Will be this year opener to try different Fragrances WITH notes that usually I think I do not like, since is how I have discovered most of the BEST Fragrances I have.
    – I Will keep on having fun with my Fragrances.
    – FRAGRANCES Will help me to improve .y Mood everyday
    – I Will live each day as the Last one
    – I Will Talk about all that I think or feel.

Thank you Nicoleta for these great typs and for the fantastic perfume recommendations (Under my skin and pick me Up are LOVE for me).

My own 2023 perfume resolution is nevera give Up finding my perfect fragrance because It is in the way where you find your besties.

    I live in Spain.

  • Great resolutions for the new year! For me, the resolution would be: no more blind buys. Too many gone bad, and lots of money distracted by perfumes not in the wish list. So this year I will stick with my wish list and nothing more!

    Claudia, EU

  • I love this list of perfume resolutions and that you lead with a reminder to experiment a little. I have to go back and try a bunch of samples that didn’t work for me on first wear; now they might connect with me or feel correct in a different season. Same goes for fragrances I love that I don’t wear often. They might reveal something new that I usually miss. I also liked #4; life is to short to conserve fragrances that are meant to be used. I’ll spray them happily and often this year. Personally, I plan to make some final assessments on samples I’ve tried and pass them onto friends to try if I’m no longer interested. Always good to share the fun.

I’m in the USA. Happy new year!

  • carlos_lager says:

I agree with many of your resolutions. I often use fragrances as mood boosters and it can really change my day, if I wear the right fragrance. My number 1 resolution is to smell more and buy less. Also I want to continue my quest of getting to know more raw materials. naturals and synthetics…
    Thank you for the giveaway!

Wow I really like Nicoleta’s perfume resolution #4 to “ride those unicorns” and not just save precious perfumes for special occasions. Every day is a special occasion! My perfume resolution is to sell or gift one of my bottles of perfume for every new bottle I buy so that my collection does not grow out of control! I live in the US.
