Fath’s Essentials L’Orée Du Bois Review (Luca Maffei) + Rita Hayworth Draw

Under the creative direction of Rania Naim, Jacques Fath Parfums has already released three fragrance quartets labelled “Fath’s Essentials” since 2015. The second quartet, created in 2017 by perfumer Luca Maffei (double winner of an Art & Olfaction Award), comprised of four fragrances that were inspired by Jacques Fath’s spirit of “joie de vivre”, while translating a specific color into olfactory form: Rosso Epicureo, inspired by a Kir Royal cocktail, interprets the color red; Les Frivolités, inspired by an eponymous lingerie collection, the color pink; Lilas Exquis, inspired by Fath’s beloved color and flower, the color lilac; and  Fath’s Essentials L’Orée du Bois, inspired by a dress designed by Jacques Fath for legendary actress Rita Hayworth, is an olfactory interpretation of gold.

By the late 1940s, self-taught haute couture designer Jacques Fath had acquired international fame for giving an air of youth to women of all ages with his “wearable glamour”, and a clientele that included film stars like Ava Gardner, Greta Garbo and Rita Hayworth. The latter chose Fath to design both her wedding dress and the trousseau for her upcoming marriage to Prince (and playboy extraordinaire) Aly Khan. The marriage wouldn’t be either long or happy for Rita (except for the birth of her daughter, Yasmin); however at the time her wedding received enormous worldwide press coverage, especially in view of her decision to leave Hollywood. The couple was married on May 27, 1949. Rita’s wedding dress was a simple, lovely pale blue crepe dress with a full skirt; it was so widely admired that copies soon emerged, being sold by the hundreds in Macy’s department store.

One of the other eleven dresses that Fath designed for Hayworth’s wedding trousseau was a long evening gown in white ottoman (a silk ribbed-weaved fabric with natural sheen), featuring dramatic sleeves, plunging neckline and a voluminous skirt, named “L’Orée du Bois” (meaning “the Edge of the Forest”). This sleek, structured dress with its elegantly erotic, perfect hourglass silhouette gave its name to Fath Essentials L’Orée du Bois.

Since the dress was linked with a marriage, but also due to Rita Hayworth’s glowing star aura, perfumer Luca Maffei imagined Fath’s Essentials L’Orée du Bois as an olfactory interpretation of gold. Quite brilliantly, he envisioned the woods of the fragrance’s name as a mimosa forest: when a vast area is covered with mimosa trees in full bloom, like in the French Côte d’Azur, the previously ordinary-looking woods transform into fantastically beautiful yellow-golden forests…

A luminous opening of uplifting bergamot, juicy mandarin and bright neroli announces the symphony of yellow flowers to come: the soft woodiness and the tender, but tenacious, floralcy of golden mimosa (a tree that blooms in the winter) is accented by orange blossom, ylang ylang and dry broom, and effectively seasoned by sunny spices (cumin, cinnamon, and mostly saffron). The honey is to me perceptible right from the start, and is steadily increasing in intensity, depth and sensuality, as the undeniable co-star of the mimosa. It’s one of the most realistic and fulfilling honey notes I’ve ever experienced, encompassing both the sweet/bitter, and the dense/fluid contrast of natural honey.

To achieve this, Luca Maffei used the Firmenich specialty “Honey SigNature”, an ingredient made of natural honey extract and synthetic captives, capturing the gourmand and sensuous properties of this spectacular gift of nature. Mr. Maffei showed real mastery in using this exceptional material: honey’s animalic, erotic aspect is present but is handled with the utmost elegance, blended with the slightly powdery yellow bouquet, the vibrancy of golden spices, and an airy woody/creamy base of musk, cashmeran and sandalwood. Hosted in a hefty cylindrical flacon with a magnetic cap, the translucent golden juice has above average sillage, and 10-hour longevity.

Highly sophisticated and chic, Fath’s Essentials L’Orée du Bois is a sunny amber/floriental that stunningly translates gold into scent. This impressively synaesthetic creation triggers all senses with its captivating aroma, color, texture, and – almost – taste. As a honey, fragrance and cinema lover, I found my mind flooded with visions of lovely Rita in a yellow dress, emerging from a mimosa cloud with her amber-red hair glowing…

Notes: Bergamot, Yellow Mandarin, Moroccan Neroli; Mimosa Absolute, Orange Blossom Absolute, Ylang Ylang; Gold Accord, Cashmeran, Sandalwood, Honey, Amber, Musks.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank Jacques Fath Parfums for my bottle of Fath’s Essentials L’Orée Du Bois. The opinions are my own.

  • Love the note mix and the author’s comment that the honey is “…one of the most realistic and fulfilling honey notes I’ve ever experienced…”. I have not had the pleasure of experiencing any of the offerings from this house. US

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Loved the review, from the beautiful dress and her status marrying a prince, Rita Hayworth certainly deserves the spotlight, and back to those golden forests, outstanding review, just now got to imagine the scent.

  • As a lover of classic cinema and mimosa as a note (Poeme is one of my all time favorites), I’m extremely interested in this perfume. I unfortunately don’t know anything from this house. I’m from EU, Romania. Thank you!

  • dianacese says:

I have not had the honor of smelling any perfumes from Jacques Fath’s Essentials, however, after having read Despina’s juicy and history-infused review, I know for sure I would love to.

I live in Europe, The Netherlands

  • Thank-You Despina & Jacques Fath for review and our chance to win a bottle. I loved everything about Despinas lovely review from the description of the notes to the beautiful pics! The mimosa and increasing honey with added Cinnamon & Saffron on a creamy woody base sounds gorge. I Love Rosso Epicureo and am in the USA

  • oh boy…..once you start talking about things like “a powdery yellow bouquet” and “vibrant golden spices” , those things are going to get my attention….but a “mimosa forest”? Yeah, this girl is in! I simply must try every mimosa centric fragrance there is. Ever since Tommi Sooni’s Passerelle went the way of the Allosaurs; I’ve been seeking a glorious cloud of golden mimosa….

  • carlos_lager says:

Great review! I never heard of the brand before. But because I love classic movies and am a fan of both honey and mimosan, I am very interested and would love to smell this perfume.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Sounds like a delectable nectar, please count me in! I haven’t tried any from the Essentials collections, but Curacao Bay and Red Shoes are on my list to sample, and I do have a decant of Fath de Fath that I love. I live in the US and thank you Jacques Fath Parfums for your generosity.

  • Mmm this looks so amazing. I love this blog for introducing me in such a thoughtful and curated manner to niche releases! In the US

  • Thank you for this review.
Nice description. I am intrigued- “erotic side of honey”?!!!+ with gold spices?
Oh, sounds very beautiful. Unfortunately, I know only old version of Green Water from Fath.

  • I have mixed feelings about Honey as a note. There are a lot a Honey fragrances I own , and also love but some I can’t stand. Honey could go really animalic on me. Proper testing is a must .
Sweet , floral , spicy , ambery sensual smell with good longevity, and decent sillage . Count me in.
I know Luca Maffei , and some pre-ESSENTIALS Jacques Fath fragrances , but never had a chance to smell any from the new ESSENTIALLS lines.
    Thanks for the opportunity

  • I got super curious about the honey SigNature! I do love honey as a prominent note, and my daughter loves when I wear them, like Veros Rozy 🙂

  • AlwaysWater says:

I loved the detailed backstory on the inspiration for this perfume. The name of the dress… And the days when a bride would commission a wedding trousseau are dreamy luxuries themselves. I’m a designer myself so seeing one art (fashion, 1950’s) starting a conversation with another (perfume making,2019) is enough to make my heart beat excitedly.
I have not smelled anything in this house yet, and live in the USA

  • fazalcheema says:

Everything from name L’Orée Du Bois to notes like mimosa and honey, and even the color of the perfume is homage to the color gold and to Rita’s wedding. I have not tried anything from Essentials line but I do have some vintage Fath creations including Canasta and Fath de Fath. I am in US

  • Mimosa wood! I don’t think I’ve ever smelled such combo before. Must give a sniff sometime!
Thank you for the detailed description and thanks for the draw! I know little about Fath perfumes (well the favourite has to be Iris de Fath that I had the chance to smell briefly!) I live in EU.

  • What a interesting idea…to creat perfume inspired by dress! There so many nice flowers in this perfume- ylang-ylang, mimosa and neroli. I hope sandalwood and cashmeran will not allow thus perfume be so feminine.

Great review, taking us though an fascinating maze of feelings, images, colors, sensations… The sensuality of Despina’s writing, mixed with her apprecation of every note played in that olfactive symphony is astounding. PS I don’t want to take part in the draw…

  • I have not experienced a fragrance from this house, but the beautiful description in the review of a forest of Mimosa, together with the rich honey, leads me to believe this would be the one. Loved the photographs. Please include me in the draw. I live in Monterey USA

  • recursivemask says:

While I haven’t had a chance to sniff any of Jacques Fath’s Essentials, this fragrance sounds like a great place to start! It sounds amazing. Florals, spice, and honey weave an interesting story for this perfume, and to get a chance to smell it would be a delight. I’m in the US.

  • On my bucket list now: a walk through the mimosa tree forest in Côte d’Azur! It’s always a pleasure to read about the creative history behind the fragrance. Wonderful article, thank you! USA

  • Damiana C says:

The notes of this fragrance truly make me think so gold, especially honey and mimosa. Rita Hayworth’s pictures and inspiration are a wonderful addition. I haven’t tried any fragrances from the brand but would love to. I live in the USA.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

A forest of mimosa trees sounds like a charming idea… plus I love honey notes. I don’t have a favorite Fath but would love to try more. I am in the USA.

  • I have never had a chance to try anything from this brand. But L’Orée Du Bois sounds incredible wonderful from the base of the notes. I would very love this perfume. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I have not tried anything from Jacques Fath’s Essentials, yet. I love honey, so L’Orée Du Bois will be the first. I’m in the USA.

  • wildevoodoo says:

Wow, Despina’s depiction of the erotic, animalic honey and the floaty mimosa combined with the woody but still airy base sounds so ethereal and lovely, perfect for the spring and fall weather when it’s not too cold and not too warm. The idea of a synesthetic olfactory vision of gold sounds so appealing! I’ve been really wanting to try this and Red Shoes from Fath, as I’ve never tried any before! I am in the US 🙂

  • Love Luca Maftei creations and this one sounds pretty nice. I’ve had the chance to smell only 5 perfumes from this house and my favourite is Green Water. Thanks for the draw, i am in the EU.

  • NiceVULady says:

I’ve never tried any of the Fath fragrances, although they are on my ever increasingly long list of fragrances to try. This sounds absolutely beautiful thanks to the awesome review by Despina. I love the scent of honey so I will be looking to try this one. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • I loved thinking about Rita Hayworth and all of the stars from that era. It was so glamorous. Despina, you did a beautiful job on this article. One can almost smell the beautiful flowers and Honey in this wonderful fragrance. I have not tried any of Jacques Fath fragrances. I would like to! Thank you USA

“It’s one of the most realistic and fulfilling honey notes I’ve ever experienced, encompassing both the sweet/bitter, and the dense/fluid contrast of natural honey.”
I’m sorry, i don’t want to be rude, but as a Pastry Chef , and working with different varieties of honey for over 20 years almost every day , I can tell there’s no such thing. Don’t know exactly what you mean by “natural honey” but both the taste and the smell differs A LOT depending of what honeybees collected to produce the nectar. Not every honey is sweet/bitter. The smell could be floral, buttery, pine honey, Blue Gun honey do have a strong eucalyptus smell, and so on. Honey from wild bees does not smell pleasant. Some varieties smell dirty and animalic .
As for L’Oree du Bois I like the addition of sandalwood.
Yes I do own a fragrance from Essentials – it’s called Curacao Bay. It’s not very complex, but makes me smile every time I’m wearing it.
    Appreciate the giveaway campaign

  • Ooh. Neroli, honey, broom, orange blossom, (my personal kryptonite, can’t resist afrag with orange blossom) yellow! It all sounds lovely. I liked hearing about Rita’s dress, and how M. Fath used Rita, yellow and gold as inspirations. I don’t think I’ve tried any Jacques Fath perfumes but I think i would love to try this one. In the us. The I you for the draw and review!

  • roxhas1cat says:

I’ve not smelled anything from this line. One of my favorite perfumers is Luca, so I’d love to try this one. Sounds fabulous!! I’ve not been a fan of mimosa, but with the honey and neroli I think this one will be very nice. The gold accord is interesting. Thanks for the review Despina. USA.

  • WaltherP99 says:

L’Oree du Bois sounds like a nice fragrance for the spring and autumn, and eventually summer nights, if it’s a bit colder.Floral honey fragrance with woody base – i’m all in. On top of all it’s made by Luca Maffei.
I do own 100ml of Curacao Bay and also Fath Pour L`Homme from the old line. And because someone could be “There’s no 100ml bottle of Curacao Bay” – there is you you split with a friend the bigger 200ml bottle Jacques Fath are selling .I don’t get why the bigger 200ml bottles are available only for the first 4 fragrances from Essentials line.
    Thank you for the opportunity.

Great review! This sounds fantastic and the bottle looks great! My mom was always a huge Rita Hayworth fan so I’ve heard alot about her and have seen some of her movies. If I were to win this I would definitely gift it to my mom. She would be so excited. Thank you for the opportunity. USA.

I love the image of a golden mimosa wood and losing myself in it. I really want to wear this gorgeous fragrance. I don’t have a favorite Fath perfume as yet but I believe I will. I’m in the US and thank you for this draw.

  • Golden is my favorite color and a sunny amber/floriental that stunningly translates gold into scent seems to be enough interesting to me. Thank you for this opportunity.

  • Crisstyyn says:

Hmm..how would gold smell like? 🙂 I would be more than interested to test luca maffei’s vision. So interesting the story that led to the creation of this fragrance. Loved the review. Regards from uk

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I have not had the opportunity to try this house but this one sounds amazing. I love the thought of a realistic honey mixed with lovely warm spices. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • A bright juicy opening that dries down to a nice creaminess. Haven’t tried a Jacque Fath fragrance yet. I like the mixture of the notes and This one has a nice story to it. US

  • Dubaiscents says:

What an extraordinary history on the brand and its relationship with Rita Hayworth. It seems that Luca has chooses the perfect way to represent the color gold through golden mimosas and honey! I would love to smell this one (and all of the line since I have yet to find them anywhere). Thank you for the chance to try and the wonderful review. I live in the US.

  • Beautifully written and I can taste the honeyed floral
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • I surely enjoyed the added artwork and photographs along with this review. Rita Hayworth is such an icon and associating her along with this ‘erotic’ fragrance seems appropriate. Thank you for the chance…I am in the US.

  • Mimosa is a note I’ve come to appreciate only in the last few years and to me it is very reminiscent of honey. The honey note can be hit or miss for me. I don’t like it if it is too feral. However having tried some of the other fragrances from this line I sustect the honey will have a light touch and please me. Thanks for the informative review. I enjoyed the history.

  • Outstanding and beautiful review. The golden era of cinema and life so simple. I do love mimosa as a note and a realistic honey note is amazing. Golden life. I live in US.

  • I I love money so much as a note in perfumery and I also love mimosa. My favorite fragrance is fath de fath

Thank you for the chance I’m in the USA

  • Gorgeous Review! I love the history of Rita Hayworth in this review – I learned more from this review that I ever have about her. This perfume sounds amazing! I have never tried anything by Jacques Fath but would love to. I live in the Washington DC area.

  • doveskylark says:

As a big fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood, I enjoyed Despina’s review very much. I always think how much more elegant the movie industry was back in the 1940s. I loved reading that a forest of mimosa trees inspired the gold in this fragrance.
I haven’t tried anything from this house, but Lilas Exquis sounds lovely.
    I live in the USA.

  • Sign me up! Citrus and amber! I love that this is a ‘gold’ scent. Great review. Thank you so much for the detailed description Despina. From Canada.

  • I’m in the US and I’ve never tried this line. I’m a big fan of florientals and I’d love to smell this interesting new honey ingredient! Thanks for the fragrance review and the peek at the old hollywood glamour too.

  • Diana Nicolau says:

I’m very curious to experience the honey’s animalic, erotic aspect but powdery in the same time! Never had the chance to test perfumes from Jacques Fath’s Essentials. I hope I will have this opportunity, thank you ! I’m from Romania.

  • tuiu silver says:

Despina’s review sounded really appealing to me.
The way that Despina described the drydown and the fragrance changes are special: Citrusy, bright, woody, floral, and deliciously gooey (from the honey) is exactly what I look forward in a fragrance.
Multifaceted with different dimensions is just… wow…

I never got the chance to try Jacques Fath’s Essentials fragrances, but I would love to join this draw please.
    I’m from USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed Despina’s review. A juicy citrus and neroli opening. Transitioning to a floral heart with the unique Mimosa Tree and that honey note in the base that adds a unique element to the fragrance. I don’t have a favorite fragrance from Jacques Fath’s Essentials because I haven’t sampled anything from this collection.

  • I really loved looking at the pictures and reading about the beautiful dresses. I don’t have any favorite fragrance from Jacques Fath’s Essentials. I live in USA.

  • I’ve not smelled anything from this perfume house but this one sounds so fresh and warm at the same time. I love orange blossom and neroli. But adding the honeyed amber to it sounds like a great touch.
    I live in the US.

  • Great review , what i thought was pretty interesting in review was that Luca Maffei imagined Fath’s Essentials L’Orée du Bois as an olfactory interpretation of gold ! Wow gold….Definitely intriguing 🙂
I haven’t got to try any from house yet but really want to.
Canada here and thanks for review and draw…..

  • BlessedTA says:

Great review. I’ve not tried any of the perfume. Thanks for the chance, hello from Canada

  • This definitely sounds like a tribute to gold! The note list sounds rich and bright and I lived reading about Father and his relationship with Hayworth. I’ve never tried anything from this line before. I live in the USA and thanks for the giveaway!

  • IvanVelikov says:

Floral honey , with decent longevity and sandalwood base – sounds pretty nice . I’m not familiar with Jacques Fath , but i’m super qurious about Volours Boise because of all comparisons with Baraonda Nasomatto.
