Always certain stands at the perfume salons draw me in extricably close, no loitering or hovering or sidestepping, the ones who are not on my calendar of appointments yet something coded within the name or the visuals before me, speak myriad tones and I am captured.  Extra Virgo did precisely that at Pitti Fragranze 2022, held as usual in beautiful Florence, the city of my dreams. My instincts are never wrong footed and with the guidance of one of Extra Virgo’s perfumers, Michele Marin, I explored. What an exceptional collection Forbidden Botanicals is, profound and deeply erotic perfumes, oscillating between a hypnotic lulling to a no-holds barred eroticism that shocks and entices in the same gasp of breath, a sirenic lure. Each one is composed of the finest extractions, taking from the name of each perfume and probing the namesake and its attendants right to their very core, exposing a soul facet of each.

I rightly felt as if all my perceptions were born anew, discarded understandings of coffee, cacao, mushroom, cannabis and tobacco left burnt to ashes and littering the floor, a new comprehension of each arose. The  Extra Virgo Forbidden Botanicals Collection certainly feels as if something hidden for centuries has been given breath. Quite the experience, slightly enamored ever since, it is my pleasure to write of the 2023 Art and Olfaction Finalist, Animal Café by HH Prince Alex of Limbin and Perfumer Michele Marin. Profound bohemian pleasures, interwoven scent, flesh and layers of time, all whisper cloistered arcane words into a willing ear.

There is something that draws us in as human beings with our sense of smell and certain particular aromas that capture our attention and longing. Coffee is one, even if you dislike the drink itself, its scent is tempting, draws us. Animal Café from Extra Virgo is coffee at its sublime best, in fact a triple shot of the worlds best, extractions of Arabica, Columbian, Ethiopian and Indonesian, 30% of coffee absolutes, a rare quality. This wild ride combination of coffee opens Animal Café with a hypershot of the most silken enrobed beans, a creamy chocolate/coffee aspect igniting desire yielding to a mouthwatering roast, it swirls and embraces, with a sensual sweep akin to the touch of bronzed hands on my pale skin.  A frisson in its wake, brightened and transported in combination with clove and cinnamon, both so softly applied on my skin as to excite and invite but not dominate, in fact the clove is so beautifully rounded, it purely acts to elevate the coffee in its ascent.  I am drawn aside into that oblivion of my own making, Extra Virgo Animal Café the catalyst supreme.

The night airs are thickened and taut, my body emulates this unyielding state, heavy with the suffused heat of a passing day, wafting through the intricacies of carved perfumed screens at my window, filtering the smells and sounds of the alleys below, sylphic wraiths they come uninvited to cocoon me.  A bed swathed, brightly patterned and hued, a cacophony of colour laid upon me in silken caress, the waiting interminable yet tempered by the layers of vapor’s that enter through that shuttered opening. In breaths deep and urgent, I inhale desire. Below the merchants of the night souk continue their fervent trading, the searchers of the exotic at their disposal, gregarious groups gather and exchange their daily lives for a night clad encounter, charmed by the coffee shop below. Spectral haze within the spent heat of the day carries aloft the roasted aromas, voluptuous and lush in creamed perfection for me to inhale within my sanctuary, a contrast to the milling crowds below. Spices heighten my longing, warming and enticing, a hedonistic oud rises from the myriad burners stirring my senses in preparation for his anticipated arrival, laying me to waste in sanctified readiness.

Bursting like a petal on my form, beckoning in silent voices sent out across the alleys of people for him to hurry. How minutes become hours in this waiting, longing permeating my body with an intense embering, destined to rage in flame all the night long. I seem lost in this swirl of senses, Extra Virgo Animal Café spins me into a sublimated state, an eksatsis in waiting poised at the very edges of delirium.  In the shortness of breath and encapsulated within moments I am lit from within, night-time rivulets gather on my inner thigh, an expression of the heated darkness, a subtle animal scent rising, there it is, my heart races with a different tempo, flushes of anticipation in waves.  That footfall upon the stair, the door below yielding to his hand and the preceding waft announcing his imminency in civet tones, animalic suffused in flesh, softened by heated skin and my soul parts to greet him. I am undone to myself…

Extra Virgo Animal Café is a romp in sensual anticipation and an abandonment to the senses, it’s a wild ride with beautiful companions, dark and uncompromising, it is a sublime ecstasy which couples’ endurance with quality. A coffee salutation like no other with a refined artistry. Time for another coffee? Or two?

This might be the first time I’ve heard of Extra Virgo, and their fragrances seem very intriguing to me. Within this year, I’ve become able to appreciate some fragrances which contain ingredients from the animal kingdom, so I might be able to appreciate Extra Virgo’s collected works. “Animal Cafe” sounds good to me because I like coffee and cloves in fragrances, and the cloves and the coffee sound like they are high-quality in “Animal Cafe”. I hope to win the discovery set. I live in the U.S.A.

  • ” it is a sublime ecstasy which couples’ endurance with quality “, This phrase, this description is enough to make any perfume lover want to buy blindly these magical fragrance blends… Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this giveaway, and thank you for the elegance with which Mr Danu Seith described the perfumes of this house… Greetings from Algeria.

Yearning and longing for places both seen and exotic unvisited is a good path to go along when thinking about coffee. There is nostalgia of places when smelling various types of coffee. Darkness, warmth and voluptuousness is what makes coffee scents attractive. That this one includes civet is a promise I am allured by. The last time I smelt civet was in Habanita, a small sample of the old traditional masterpiece, and it was a relish.

  • Thanks, Danu for your majestic review. You made me adore Extra Virgo fragrances! I went also through their website and I liked the way they craft their scents which is like a symphony for the senses. Virgo Cafe, in particular, is an olfactory journey that took me to a cozy cafe tucked away on a charming street. Its blend of warm, earthy notes with a hint of freshly brewed coffee creates an ambiance that’s both comforting and invigorating. It’s as if you’re wrapped in a soft, aromatic embrace that awakens your spirit and soothes your soul. Extra Virgo has truly captured the essence of the Virgo personality – meticulous, grounded, and yet delightfully whimsical. Virgo spirit and a sensory experience like no other, Virgo Cafe is an absolute must-have in my collection.

  • I am very curious about Monte Kush. I know only a couple of fragrances having cannabis and I feel like this note has much more things to show and is very underlooked.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • A joy ride to the dark side! The high concentration of delicious natural ingredients, especially three (3!) coffees in Ex Virgo Animal Cafe, makes these hard to resist. Plus who wouldn’t love to get asked what they are wearing and be able to answer, “Ex Virgo Animal Cafe”. I live in NY.

  • I’ve been wanting to try Animal Café ever since its Art & Olfaction Award nomination! Most coffee scents are so gourmand, which is not my thing, but I do love the smell of of coffee so a darker, more sensual and animalic take sounds so good. I’ve also been wanting to try Pangea from them as well so I would love the sampler! MN, USA

  • I would be over the moon to try the Extra Virgo perfume collection. I went to the website to read more, and am interested in all of them, but particularly Monte Kush with Cannabis Flowers live terpenes and Royal green Ojari Frankincense. Animal Cafe sounds like a rich and well considered fragrance, one to really enjoy the experience of parsing out the notes, South East Asian Cloves & Sri Lankan Cinnamon, then letting it come back together as a whole. ~ dual Canada/Italy

  • Ohhh sample sets are so fun, love exploring brands this way!
Danu’s review was great for exploring a niche brand to a relative newbie of indie/niche perfumery like myself. The sensuality and longing Danu described were so so poetic and had me wondering about Animal Cafe. This review seriously reads like an entry for something poetic and dreamy, and I would love to smell the scents from Extra Virgo. Thank you for the giveaway, from Canada!

  • This spicy, animalic coffee sounds like the stuff of dreams! I love coffee centric fragrances and I’m always on the look for new coffees. This blend of precious coffees with clove, cinnamon and then a burst of civet and oud truly sounds like a necessary experience.
The other titles in the sample set sound quite exciting as well. Pangea? Mount Kush? Could be anything and I’d be delighted to find out.
    Commenting from the EU.

  • There have been lots of coffee-scented fragrances profiled here on ÇaFleureBon lately! They’re an interesting family of fragrances; coffee smells wonderful, but it isn’t always particularly wearable. I’m not sure if I enjoy smelling like coffee when I’m not actually in a cafe.

Animal Café is an interesting take on coffee fragrances, utilizing a potent amount of coffee absolute, and extractions from four different types of coffee. The combination of spice and coffee always works well; here we get subtle clove and cinnamon. The former is an intriguing choice—more prickly and textured than something like nutmeg—and a combination of “hedonistic oud” and civet adds further animalic complexity. On top of that, Animal Café doesn’t sound sweet or lactic, which so many coffee fragrances are. It sounds potent and unique. Great review Danu!

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • RonaldProkes17 says:

Now this is a new house that genuinely gets me excited. Danu’s review is so vivid and illustrates how well Animal Cafe balances light with dark, sophistication with the primal, and the true experimentation that this coffee cantered fragrance illustrates. I really liked how Danu placed this into an almost mystical, smoke laden and darkly painted setting. The coffee and the desires are dark, the thoughts are heavy. and it’s all such a sensual kaleidoscopic interplay. This is so exciting! To be honest, every single scent in the discovery set sounds incredible. Really smart and exciting review and even more fabulous modern perfumery!
I am located in the USA.

  • There are not many scents I love more than coffee. There was a point where I drank so much coffee, but now I hardly ever drink it. I still love passing by the coffee shop and getting a drink, even if it’s not a coffee one. I’ve been looking for a strong coffee fragrance that is not a gourmand because I don’t enjoy sweetness as much. Love to see there’s some other warm notes on there that aid the coffee. And funnily enough, I noticed a while ago that coffee and marijuana have a certain similarity within their scent, so I wonder how that blends into this scent. I live in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the detailed and beautiful writeup Danu.

This fragrance is really an ode to a country and it’s culture. I love the use of the three different coffee, married together with spices and held together by the use of vintage civet. In some ways, it brings to mind the famous Kopi Luwak coffee from this part of the subcontinent.

The story of this brand is also very interesting.

    Cheers from WI, USA
