In the heart of London, at the famous Harrods department store, the Ex Nihilo Quintessence Collection took centre stage as the brand celebrated their 10th anniversary. Co-founder Benoit Verdier, accompanied by UK Manager Kevin Vandewalle, presented their Extrait de Parfums, a demonstration of the brand’s dedication to personalised luxury.

Ex Nihilo, a Latin phrase meaning ‘Out of nothing,’ encapsulates the brand’s ethos perfectly. Their manifesto revolves around crafting fragrances that embody a spirit of pure refinement while adhering to a philosophy of minimalist aesthetics. Ex Nihilio has consistently pushed the boundaries of olfactory artistry since its inception a decade ago.

Fragrance enthusiasts and novices alike had the opportunity to experience the various accords and guess the intricate combinations from the scent blotters. One of the stars of this milestone celebration was the exclusive and intriguing Outcast Blue Extrait. This fragrance is a sensory journey that immerses you in a world of bold and daring olfactory notes. At its core, Outcast Blue Extrait features an exquisite blend of saffron, black pepper, lily of the valley, agarwood, vetiver, sandalwood, tobacco, and oakmoss. These carefully selected ingredients come together to create a scent that bold and resinous.

Ex Nihilo Outcast Blue Extrait takes the essence of the original 2019 fragrance and elevates it to new heights. This Extrait version reflects the brand’s commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring the uncharted territory of fragrance creation. It is a powerful, rebellious, and textured olfactory experience that defies convention and embraces the art of scent with audaciousness.

Jordi Fernandez of Givaudan

Behind the magic of Outcast Blue Extrait is the skilled hand of perfumer Jordi Fernández. With a deep understanding of fragrance composition and a passion for creating unique olfactory experiences, Fernández has crafted a perfume that captivates the senses and lingers in the memory.

Outcast Blue Extrait is an intense fusion of cool and warm tones. The presentation is high end modernity brought to life, from the shining crafted cap to the deep and sturdy sapphire blue bottle with incisive and sharp lines one can respect the attention to detail. This is also reflected in the scent itself being a luxurious affair. The saffron and moss make their presence felt immediately and one can pick the tobacco out as a prime ingredient from the outset. These notes melt beautifully together, and the leathery aspects push through, but never overwhelm. There is a dry aspect running consistently throughout the wearing and whilst this is western perfumery done with panache, I can appreciate an eastern inspiration with the addition of agarwood. The raw materials blend in harmony to deliver a fragrance of utmost style.

The fact this is is exclusive adds an air of mystery and exoticism to this fragrance. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Notes: saffron, black pepper, lily of the valley, agarwood, vetiver, sandalwood, tobacco, and oakmoss. A wonderful review by Karl this fragrance and the bottle design exudes decadence and class. I am really fascinated by the notes especially Saffron, Black Pepper, Agarwood, Vetiver, Tobacco and Sandalwood. Cheers from the UK.

  • Like a good art piece it weaves the scent from both cool and warm notes. A great artist creates from nothing, and everything. Excited to smell this. In maryland.

I am a fan of Jordi. I love his work and his taste for fragrances. Saffron openings are my favorite because I am a fan of that note. The tobacco and leather described put this in the darker fragrance category that I love. the warm-cool notes in addition to the west-east mix makes this something I would love to try and own. Happy 10th anniversary and I am glad you are still focused on individuality.

I am not in the UK but I wanted to share my thoughts

  • Interesting to read a full review on an Ex Nihilo fragrance as I haven’t explored this house before.
I like the idea of a memorable and unique fragrance that lingers in your memory. When Karl talked about this it reminded me how one of the powers of fragrance is to associate ourselves with a sensory experience that may remind you of others or vice versa and is one of the best parts of investing in a scent.

Long time reader, for more than a year to be exact, and finally I decided to subscribe and enter my first giveaway. It was about time, and also I’m a fan of Ex Nihilo.
Since Outcast Blue is a favorite of mine, I’d like to say I’m thankful for the comparison between the OG , and the Extrait. Taking into consideration Karl Topham impressions of Ex Nihilo anniversary gala , and Outcast Blue Extrait I’m aware of the bolder and more daring nature of the new fragrance. It seems like in its substance the two are similar and the Extrait is a rebel to a greater extent , with added oud.
Perfumer is the same too , some changes are made if I can add a note of my own , because in the Extrait , and Karl Topham theme i don’t see patchouli , cedar and pink pepper , all eminent in the OG.
    Many thanks , UK

  • I love that bottle design—stately, impactful, and strong lines just shy of rugged. Outcast Blue Extrait relies on similarly bold notes (with the exception of lily of the valley) that I’m sure make for a potent blend. I’m surprised the leathery saffron, moss, and tobacco notes all are present throughout, considering agarwood, vetiver, and sandalwood compete for that attention. Outcast Blue Extrait sounds robust and poised.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Thanks for the great revew Karl.

It was nice to read about this fragrance. I lvoe the idea of melding together warm and cool tones and this fragrance really has an interesting set of notes, probably the most of which is the lily of the valley note that wafts in stark contrast to all the other heavier notes.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Ex Nihilo is a brand that I admire. I think my first love from them was French Kiss and they have a lot of good ones.Contrast makes interesting and having cool meets warm tones surely does the trick. I like the fact that it has a leathery aspect, I guess it could be from the saffron or oud. Knowing the brand, the quality must be top notch. And the bottle, the color are very appealing.

    Hello from UK
I’m captivated by Karl Topham review, and Ex Nihilo Blue Extrait level of complexity. I like posh woody-spicy fragrances , even more if there’s also tobacco.
I’m ready for such luxurious affair
    Thank you kindly
