État Libre D’Orange Divin Enfant Review (Antoine Lie and Etienne de Swardt) 2006 + Innocently irreverent poetry Draw

Etat Libre D'Orange Divin'Enfant

What does childlike purity have in common with heavy vices and by what alchemy could one bring together light and darkness in harmony? In what dimension do the earthly and the divine coexist peacefully? Leave it to État Libre d’Orange to dream up a fragrance that does just that. This alternative perfumery brand spearheaded by the visionary ‘enfant terrible’ Etienne de Swardt, who describes himself as a “man of words and emotions”, enlisted the olfactive wizardry of the equally subversive and brilliant master perfumer Antoine Lie to create ‘Divin’Enfant’.

 Sacred and profane – Ètat Libre d’Orange Divin’Enfant ©Cristian

Faithful to his own characterization, de Swardt infuses all the État Libre d’Orange creations with profound words and emotions: olfactive mythology and poetry spun into complex layers of meaning, intertwined with references to literature and popular culture. And more often than not, the preferred literary means by which the État Libre d’Orange fragrances come to life is an innocently irreverent kind of poetry. The preamble to Divin’Enfant reads as follows: “A child can either charm or annoy us with the same ruthlessness. A child can be irresistible with his angel-sweet smile but he also knows how to drive us crazy. Under the angel, the faked innocence of a demon.”

Divin'Enfant review

Shadow play by Cristian©

And it’s this exact beautiful cacophony of opposites that make État Libre d’Orange Divin’Enfant a fascinating and alluring fragrance: an oxymoronic olfactive illusion that perplexes and delights at the same time. To draw a literary parallel – think of this fragrance as an interpretation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A peculiar duality that, on paper, should not necessarily work, but one that ends up being more than the sum of the two parts. The fragrance opens with a surprisingly delicious bergamot and orange blossom cloud: freshly floral for a moment, then slowly descending into a much sweeter and gourmand floral facet. Divin’Enfant is anything but linear. You find yourself bringing your perfumed wrist to your nose constantly, just to make sure that what you are smelling comes from you and that this is, in fact, the same fragrance you sprayed on some time ago. Transient notes of rose and heliotrope make their contribution known and then fade into the background, further blurring the lines between floral, fruity and gourmand.

We are offered further insight into the structure of État Libre d’Orange Divin’Enfant: “After the gentle top notes of orange blossom and marshmallow, breaks the unexpected accord of coffee, leather and cold tobacco, a shrilling symbol of our sleepless nights. True to his reputation of “polymorphic pervert”, this mini-sized tyrant is only happy when he succeeds in imposing his whims, which he always manages to do. What a sweet little monster!”-a note from the brand.

After the opening notes conclude their performance, the mature and the obscure take center stage. Accords of coffee, leather and tobacco transform the diaphanous and luminous cloud of floral notes from the opening into a haze of delectable vices. Divin’Enfant becomes less gourmand while enhancing its transgressive character. From infancy to adulthood. The lucid loses its initial innocence. Once État Libre d’Orange Divin’Enfant ceases to evolve on skin, it settles into a musky and soft tobacco vanilla that  serves as an epilogue to this exhilarating olfactive poem. Divin’Enfant is, in its essence, not unlike good poetry. The more you read into it, the more will be uncovered to you. The closer you pay attention to it, the deeper you will be pulled into its beautiful and tangled web.

Notes: Bergamot, Neroli, Peach, Rose Absolute, Orange Blossom, Heliotrope, Vanilla, Patchouli, Musk

I really liked this opposition of opposites described in this article. Indeed, a child can delight and terrify us. A very beautiful allegory. In principle, it seems to me that many of the fragrances of this perfume brand are based on this opposition, I would like to try this fragrance. My favorite perfume by them is a fat electrician.

This review makes me feel like I NEED to experience the entirety of this frangrance from beginning to end. There are definitely notes that pique my interest. I’ve never tried any fragrances Etat Libre d’Orange but this one sounds divine.

  • Wow, this sounds so unusual and interesting! I love a sweet, fruity gourmand, as well as a dark, smoky scent, so combining the two in a fragrance that travels from one to the other sounds intriguing and lovely. I’m in New York City.

ELDO is a brand that I constantly enjoy reading reviews of because they are never boring. This fragrance has intrigued me for a while now. I really enjoy the fragrance being described as a duality and how it will keep you on your toes. The idea that it is described as poetry in a bottle is just lovely. I have never smelled this before. My favorite from the brand so far is Soul Of My Soul. I live Hawaii USA.

  • Wonderful review. I really liked it! I love any fragrance that reveals itself to the wearer over time and across repeated wears. Cristian’s review made it sound like this fits the bill! I love fragrances with a certain “duality” to them. Love the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde comparison! My favorite ELDO fragrance is, and always will be… YOSLY! (You or Someone Like You, for the uninitiated.) I have a sentimental attachment to this fragrance.
    Cheers from NC, USA.

I LOVE how Cristian describes the perfume and the relation with the diferent stages of the human Life. The opening, sweeter, more gourmand, evoking the childhood and then, the development of the fragrance to a more mature scent, arriving at the adult age. I have tried once this perfume and It is really great, even It is in my wishlist since a paar of months, being one of my favourite ELDOs.

My favourite perfume of this brand is “la fin du monde” with his aldehidic and weird powdery character.

Congratulations to Cristian and all the çafleurebon team! My name is Edgar (parfum_sindromico) and I am writing from Tenerife, Spain (EU).

  • I love fragrances that take you on a journey….and Cristian’s review certainly makes it sound as if Divin’Enfant does! I haven’t experienced many Ètat Libre d’Orange scents, but my favorite of those I have is You or Someone Like You. I live in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • This sounds like it has some for everyone. I absolutely have to try this.
I love this fragrance house. I like fragrances that keep you sniffing.

  • From Christian’s review, Divin Enfant seems like a floral tobacco composition that is a modernized version of floral tobacco perfumes from the past. In other words, more user-friendly composition for contemporary era. I am in US.

  • EDLO divin enfant like poetry a non linear fragrance that’s a floral gourmand.
My favorites are exit the king and fat electrician.
    Thanks for the chance

  • Christian’s did a great job describing the fragrance how it goes from one to another. This sounds interesting at the same time unusual. The notes are perfect sweet gourmet. I did sample fat electrician. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Cristian has captured my interest in this fragrance by allowing me to make a wonderful correlation that I get to experience with my 4yo grandson. It is amazing the power such a tiny compact “cute” package can hold, especially, when that little body wants its own way. This fragrance seems to walk along the same lines…breaking the rules and creating it’s own identity. In my mind’s eye, because of the many attributes my grandson has inherited from his dad, I can see a transformation from child to adult…a poetic beautiful reflective transformation.
Thank you Cristian for writing a review that I could easily make this correlation and enjoying the journey 🙂 USA

  • I never had the chance to test this creation from Etat Libre d’Orange, but I always liked the idea that was behind it.
The notes are interesting as well!
    Thank you for the draw!

  • Thank you for the review and also for the draw! I liked the part with the literary parallel to a fragrance interpretation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – a peculiar duality that, on paper, should not necessarily work, but one that ends up being more than the sum of the two parts.
    I am in Europe.

  • Etat Libre d’Orange always manage to create such beautiful, or at least interesting metaphors with their fragrances.
The subject of childhood and growth is indeed one that can be thoroughly explored and discussed. How can an infant be quiet and shy, while another of the same age, with no educational package whatsoever, be loud and moody? Or how can the same individual, sweet and innocent at first, grow into a criminal or a person with no principles? And so on and so forth.
Divin Enfant seems to have captured that idea perfectly. To my mind at least, orange blossom and marshmallows have nothing to do with coffee and tobacco. Yet, I am sure it smells glorious, like most Etats do.
My favorite perfumes from this house are Jasmin et cigarettes and You or someone like you.
    I live in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • The amazing fragrance presentation and stories behind it really spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU. My favorite Ètat Libre d’Orange fragrance is Divin Enfant.

  • I love Etat Libre D’Orange’s creations and Cristian’s interpretation, the smart twist and visual take on Divin Enfant, which i have’t tested, so far Putain des Palaces is my favourite one! Thanks for the review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • The concept of duality has always interested me. As someone who works with children I see the complex character development in them. Each expression so unique yet familiar. In the ingredients I think it the oddity of Neroli + Peach/Vanilla that interests me.

Floral, fruity and Gourmand that’s all I needed to know, to know I’ll love it.. Awesome review Cristian!! Ohio USA No, I haven’t had chance to try any Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances but hopefully will soon!! Good luck everyone & Thanks for opportunity!!

  • IvanVelikov says:

Ok you got my attention. I’m a bit more interested in the base of Divin’ Enfant .Let’s see how the vintage coffee, leather and tobacco patterns , will combine with more playful gourmandish opening. Like usual for ELDO, different element’s of surprise are present .
I have experience with Etat Libre d’Orange, Experimentum Crucis i had to smell, the reason was Despina glorifying it. It even exceeded my expectations , and now i have it. Suits me well, and it’s super powerful. Remarkable People for example, is A LOT weaker compared to it. The two in my possession.
    Thank you all

  • Cristian pointed out the poetry involved un Etat Libre D’Orange, which is one of the things I love about this house. Another thing I love is their irreverence. And, like Cristian’s review,I am enchanted by their scents. I live in the US. My favorite Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance right now is Like This.

  • I enjoy nonlinear fragrances that evolve and Cristian’s description of this one sounds especially interesting in its evolution. My favorite Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance is currently You or Someone Like You. Thanks for the draw. NC, USA

  • So, I’ve never had the pleasure of smelling any Ètat Libre d’Orange fragrances. Reading the review of this, I am quite surprised to hear how multi-faceted it is. Looking at the notes, I would not have expected the fragrance to go through so many phases. It sounds so fresh in the opening (I love orange blossom). But by the time you get to the drydown, it is a darker, smokey scent. It sounds beautiful and I would love to finally add this fragrance house to my collection!
    I live in the US.

  • I have had samples of this Divin’Enfant in the past and as the reviewer said, “…think of this fragrance as an interpretation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A peculiar duality/…”. I enjoy many from this line, no particular favorite, just many. US

  • A cacophony of opposites blurring the lines between notes in this fragrance sounds like an opportunity to challenge my nose. I have only tried one ELDO fragrance, Dangerous Liaisons. I would love to explore more. Thank you for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • joshuabrian says:

The notes sound interesting together but lovely. I like You or Someone Like You from the house. From USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • NituNicolae says:

I used to watch nintendo game reviews, i was so captivated as a child by Dr Jackel & Mr Hide, and this fragrance would be to me a blast to the past. Thank you for the giveaway. I live in EU, Romania.

  • Loved the way the experience of the perfume was correlated with the stages of human life. That really made me interested in this fragrance.

    Living in Germany, EU

  • More than a cacophony of opposites, I read in Cristian’s review of Etat Libre D’Orange Divin’Enfant symphony of opposites, a symphony of yin and yang that Chinese say lies underneath everything in the universe. I like deep perfumes such as Etat Libre D’Orange Divin’Enfant. The top notes of bergamot and orange blossom and middle or base note of tobacco reminds me of a lovely perfume called Tobacco Flower by Fresh, which is unfortunately discontinued now. Hope Etat Libre D’Orange Divin’Enfant captures some of Tobacco Flower DNA, in which case I would be very interested in it. Great review and description of Etat Libre D’Orange Divin’Enfant. Thanks for the draw. Writing from the USA.

In what dimension do the earthly and the divine coexist peacefully?”….”an oxymoronic olfactive illusion that perplexes and delights at the same time.” is what I liked from Cristian’s review. This fragrance seems really intriguing, contrasting, byt maybe opposites attract one another…
I would really love to win this perfume as this house is really hiped, I have no ELDO favorite, I live in London, UK.

  • I know that child! I think I have that child. As for the fragrance itself, well that sounds lovely. I would love to experience this scent. I own Jasmine et Cigarettes from them. It is a very unique scent on its own. In maryland.

Very happy to see a review of Divin Enfant here – thank you Cristian! I fell in love with this fragrance in February 2020, visiting a niche perfume shop in one of Europe’s capitals. I chose a different one from ELDO at the time, but Divin Enfant is definitely next on my list! It is beyond words captivating and addictive to me. It literally haunted me through multiple pages of the notebook I had put the blotter in. My favorites from the brand are Divin Enfant, Bijou Romantique and Putain des Palaces. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • I always find ELdO fragrances interesting even if they are not necessarily to my taste. Divin ‘Enfant sounds like a lovely gourmand scent. I like the idea of the development from the innocence of childhood to the maturity of adulthood; from orange blossom and peach to coffee, leather and tobacco. Would love to try this!. Favorite ELdO is Fat Electrician. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Cristian! This review captures the mad magic of a small child! We have a 3 year old (and SO relate to this review right now). ❤️ Fragrances that contain the tension & movement of opposition can be true masterpieces. Yes, poetry is right. I am looking forward to experiencing more scents by État Libre d’Orange. I own Jasmin et Cigarettes. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! I would love to own a perfume that puts my life right now (mom of a toddler) into a scentscape! USA

  • Fraghead Summy says:

Very Interesting frag with Gourmand floral notes, with a very modern touch to it. it would be interesting to try it out someday. Havent tried any from this house yet .

  • Beautiful images, as always! I am curious about Divin Enfant as I like the concept of the house and I know several other Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances. My favorite so far from what I have tested is Fils du Dieu
    Thank you! EU

  • I’m intrigued by the vanilla-tobacco dry down, and the fact that the scent gets deeper and deeper the more you smell it. My favorite fragrance from Ètat Libre d’Orange is “I am trash”. It’s the perfect clean summer or office scent. Thank you for the draw! I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Super interesting review! The notes are right up my alley with Bergamot, Neroli, Peach, Rose Absolute, Orange Blossom, Heliotrope, Vanilla, Patchouli, Musk but Christian mentions this Cacophony of opposites making this scent alluring which excites me. based in US

P.s mistakingly added wrong email. Corrected it

  • Thank you Cristian! I have actually sampled this fragrance before and found it was among the best in my large sample kit (20 samples from SL!). I did not find the ‘vice’ aspect to it and instead found if a very soft easy to wear fragrance, but uncommon enough that it doesn’t blend in with every other citric floral out there. I enjoyed the light/dark side portrayed in this review. My favorite ELDO is Spice must Flow. Thank you from Canada.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciate the transitions the fragrance goes through, as I don’t really care for linear scents. And, of course, those beautiful notes. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

The only Etat Libre D’Orange I’ve triedis “I Am Trash”, which I liked.

  • This fragrance was on my wishlist for some time now , it’s one of those fragrances which you would never get bored of. Again being a gourmand lover , it has those perfect notes.
Yes to try the other perfumes from this house
    Love from USA

  • No doubt I’ll sample Divin’Enfant. Cristian Marianciuc review reminded me of making, and later eating Orange Blossom Almond (because of the heliotrope) Cake , while someone smoking Cuban cigar nearby. Sounds great , i like the notes, and the fact Divin’Enfant changes a lot.
Etat Libre d’Orange do have fragrances for every occasion, 500 Years for example , my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange smells like chocolate rose and Cardamom Tarts, with Rose Water .Fat Electrician is my second favorite Etat Libre d’Orange. Combination of vetiver and the whipped cream is done very well.
Appreciate Cristian Marianciuc review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Cristian has captured my attention by masterfully describing a beautiful cacophony of opposites that seems to characterize Divin’Enfant. I have been intrigued by the house of ELDO for a while, tried two fragrances that I absolutely adore wearing in summer: You or Someone Like You and Remarkable People.
    Greetings from Slovenia.

  • Jmmcmenamin says:

Peach, orange and vanilla are all notes I really like, so that scent profile interests me most. I like their Noel au Balcon!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Christian.

Having a fragrance that has Jekyll/ Hyde contrasts really showcases the talent of the perfumer to balance materials.

I love how your review brings out the contrast between the gentle floral/citrus opening and the heavier gourmand/tobacco notes.

So far I have only had the pleasure of smelling Fat Electrican from this house.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • ELDO fragrances are kind of unpredictable, Remarkable People for example somehow reminds me of Haribo grapefruit gummy bears, and I was expecting something…. different. The sample came with my bottle of Spice Must Flow , fragrance on a different level compared to the regular Etat Libre d’Orange line.
Divin’Enfant attracts me with its transition from party time gourmand, to grown up coffee, leather tobacco trailblazing to my taste scent.
Up until checking out Spice Must Flow, 500 Years and Experimentum Crucis , my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange was my Bijou Romantic.
Right now it’s Spice Must Flow, 10/10 fragrance , like i said I also own Bijou Romantic.
    Another exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

It seems unique and interesting perfume, I really like the idea that it evolves so dramatically from floral to strong leathery smell. It sounds like a very powdery smell but in a good way, I have heard a lot of people describe this smell as very sweet, but I would love to try myself to have better sense of how it’s since all the notes sound perfect. Lovely review, I enjoyed all the references! It’s so hard to choose one favorite perfume from Etat Libre d’Orange, but if I had to pick one for me, it would be rien intense intense. Greetings from Lithuania, EU

  • Claumarchini says:

ELDO is a brand that never ceases to fascinate me…. I have purchased a sample kit of 20 fragrances and they are all so different not only from one another but also from all other fragrances I have experienced so far. Divin enfant is a truly peculiar scent and the name and feelings it evokes are dual and exactly how the creator wanted us to experience! My favourite one from the brand is Archive 69. Greetings from Italy

  • Divin’Enfant is Avant-Garde intricate fragrance i’d love to win. Rather sweet start , coffee, leather and tobacco , I like what I just read. Of “oxymoronic olfactive illusion” is a way to describe a lot of Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances , not just Divin’Enfant.
At the moment my number one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance is Spice Must Flow, and I find the smell of it very similar to Chai Masala – Rose, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cardamom . If you know Chai Masala, you know Spice Must Flow. Fabulous smell, and unlike some other Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances it’s a really powerful.
I also like Remarkable People, and You or Someone like You .
Thank you Cristian, Etat Libre d’Orange

  • Opposites attract right? I love the idea of opposing notes working so well together as Christian put so well. I think this one sounds intriguing and I’m curious to see how the notes smell together. My favorite ELDO I’ve smelled so far is I am Trash but also really enjoying Like This. NY, USA

Great review Cristian! What sparks my interest most based on the review is the description of the duality of this fragrance as a devilish innocence, a demonic sweetness. I generally do not like gourmands, but one that starts with the sweet innocence of childhood and marshmallows, but then is corrupted with leather, tobacco and coffee sounds like one I could get behinds. This perfume sounds like the equivalent of Children of the Corn, and I am very intrigued by it’s sinister beauty. I don’t have a favorite Ètat Libre d’Orange fragrance as I have not tried any, but I think Jasmin et Cigarette would be my favorite based on the notes. I live in the US.

  • Etat Libre d’Orange are famous with quirky fragrances, I do believe Divin’Enfant is no exception.
I like the notes, the transition from sweet, to darker notes like tobacco and leather, the fragrance is like Cristian said fascinating and alluring
“this mini-sized tyrant is only happy when he succeeds in imposing his whims, which he always manages to do. What a sweet little monster!”
    Hahaha , I’m sold.
I do have one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance in my collection. Tilda Swinton Like This . Now the name is changed to just Like This , I don’t know why. On my second bottle “Tilda Swinton” part is missing , but the fragrance is the same , it’s not reformulated if someone wonders.
Tilda Swinton Like This is my favorite for sentimental reasons, it reminds me of grandma.
Thanks to Cristian , and to Etat Libre d’Orange
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, two weeks in US -> two weeks in Scotland, and so on. Basically both USA and UK at the same time

  • Divin’Enfant i do not know, but according to Cristian Marianciuc it shows how from a kid , to a grown up you should always keep the playful part in you, part of ELDO DNA.
I now have 4 Etat Libre d’Orange frags- 100 ml’s of You Or Someone Like , Like This, Experimentum Crucis I received as a gift.500 Years i also have. I’d like to add that performance of “Orange Extraordinaire” line is unreal. I like most of my fragrances obnoxiously loud , but even I’m careful not to overspray.
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot
USA only, not for long I hope
