Essential Parfums The Musc Review (Calice Becker)+ Skin Memories Draw

Essential Parfums THE MUSC review by Calice Becker

At the time I wrote the introductory review of Essential Parfums for ÇaFleureBon, Essential Parfums The Musc hadn’t yet emerged as my personal favorite of the brand’s collection. Equally delightful with its fragrant “siblings”, but in a less straightforward, much more esoteric way, the scent won me over completely after consistently wearing it for a few days, impressing me with its brilliantly understated composition and great performance.

Under the inspired creative direction of the brand’s founder Géraldine Archambault, Master Perfumer Calice Becker created a fragrance of modern elegance and sophistication that resembles – in her own words – “a cloud of enveloping and comforting musk”, using some of Givaudan’s finest offerings in terms of raw materials.

Essential Parfums The Musc opens with a very fresh, zesty Laotian red ginger that’s moderately spicy, but impressively energetic. The French lavandin grosso (a hybrid of true lavender/lavandula angustifolia and spike lavender/lavandula latifolia) is blended in such a way that makes the ingredient seem much less camphoraceous than usual, emphasizing on its calming, herbal properties. An abstract, minimalistic floral heart is slowly emerging, airy and graceful. The fine santalum album from Australia (of the Indian sandalwood variety) supplies sweet creaminess and soft woodiness, while two different musks from Givaudan’s exclusive portfolio of captives are used – Nirvanolide and Serenolide. As indicated by their names, these two molecules provide ethereal, white, clean but complex musky tones, offering at the same time depth and long-lastingness to the fragrance.

For me, however, the real catalyst of Essential Parfums The Musc is none other than the beautiful Laotian beeswax, which shapes and accents all the other raw materials with its unique aromatic properties. Carrying the olfactory memory of the flowers it was made from, this organic beeswax highlights the floral aspects of the composition, while giving them a whole new dimension with its hints of wax and pollen. At the same time, the beeswax’s synergy with the sandalwood creates a captivating honeyed smoothness, while its interaction with the musks gives Essential Parfums The Musc its comforting, highly enjoyable lactonic and sweet hay nuances, in addition to further enhancing the fragrance’s depth and performance.

Let it be noted that Essential Parfums The Musc is – admirably – de facto promoting the brand’s ecological ethos and sense of social responsibility: except for the musks, every other main ingredient of the fragrance is natural; furthermore, the beeswax and red ginger oil are products of Givaudan’s partnership with local populations in Laos, where these two raw materials are sourced in a sustainable manner, as part of the Swiss company’s “Innovative Naturals” program. Even beyond fair trade, this program includes technical assistance and education for village communities, helping them to diversify, and at the same time finances the construction and staffing of a secondary school. In the same vein, the santalum album (a top-quality sandalwood oil of the highly sought-after Indian variety) is also a product of sustainable sourcing, providing Aboriginal communities of Western Australia with a steady income, as well as active protection of their land (Indian sandalwood plantations were established in Australia some 20 years ago, and harvesting is strictly controlled by the government).

At once soft and vigorous, Essential Parfums The Musc is as profoundly pleasurable, as it is deeply moving; I found that the fragrance evoked a wide range of memories and emotions, from warm maternal hugs to sensual embraces. More than touching or caressing my skin, it got right under it.

Notes: Red Ginger, Beeswax, Lavender, Sandalwood, Musk.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank Géraldine Archambault of Essential Parfums for my bottle of Essential Parfums The Musc. The opinions are my own.

As implied by Despina, Essential Parfums The Musc seems like a great musc creation with ginger opening and later the appearance of sandalwood. It was created by Calice Becker so it makes sense she will take advantage of Givaudan’s newest materials. I am in US.

  • The combination of these ingredients sounds lovely and I especially enjoyed the description of the origin of these natural ingredients. I’d love it give it a try. I’ve never tried any Essential Parfums before. Thank you for the draw! I live in EU.

A good musk fragrance is always welcome. Very beautiful description too. I am looking for the beeswax in this herbal composition hoping it will indeed soften it and make more interesting. I am from Germany. Thanks!

  • I can’t reckon having ever smelled red ginger either in a perfume or elsewhere. That triggered my interest, as well as the whole perfume, which comes across as a calming, soothing and elemental fragrance. I don’t have any experience with this house and I’m from the EU.

I don’t know any of Essential Parfums.

Despina, I enjoyed your review of Essential Parfums The Musc. I love how each note is described in amazing detail. Based on Despina’s description and the note breakdown of a tangy ginger, lavender, a sweet touch of beeswax, creamy sandalwood, and a pleasant musk it sounds very appealing to me. I am from the USA.

  • I love this review by Despina as she mentions the scent grew on her but finds that the fragrance brings memories and emotions like a warm maternal hug and sensual embraces. Wow! • ionela bulimej says:

I like the part were she describes the perfume as : a fragrance of modern elegance and sophistication that resembles – in her own words – “a cloud of enveloping and comforting musk”. I don’t have a favorite fragrance because I didn’t had the chance to try out a perfume from Essential Parfums.
    I live in EU .

  • I’m liking the ginger note in this and that it’s a pleasurable fragrance. Haven’t tried anything from this House. Thanks, US

  • Thanks for another great review, Despina! I love musc centered scents and knowing that this is mostly natural, this is exciting for me! This part of your description is what I liked most- ‘At once soft and vigorous, Essential Parfums The Musc is as profoundly pleasurable, as it is deeply moving..’ Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • I really liked the part where she said that The Musc is like a warm maternal hug or like an embrace.
    I am from EU. Thanks!

  • I am madly in love about musk perfumes. I like animalic musks but also the clean one variety. My heart started to beat faster when reading about a scent with white, clean complex musky tones, blended with natural beeswax, ginger oil and lavender. I don’t know by now anything from Essential Parfums, but I have a genuine admiration for Calice Becker creations. So, maybe The Musc may become “the” musk for me. Greetings from Romania, EU.

  • This fragrance sounds amazing with his red ginger and sandalwood tones, seems to be great in an autumn night, when I go for a walk with my samoyede (can`t wait to be colder outside!). I never tried Essential Parfums fragrances until now, but Rose Magnetic needs to be tried, too. I am a bit disappointed because I searched the site and have found a discovery kit, but they don`t deliver in Romania. Really? They deliver even in Moldavia (which is at the border of Romania and a little country) and don`t deliver in Romania? Not good, not good at all!

  • Wellll, my mistake! I`ve made a simulation and they ship to Romania (seems to be included in Members of the European Union). I can buy the discovery set now, the shipping is only 4,8 e.

  • I enjoyed this…”that the fragrance evoked a wide range of memories and emotions, from warm maternal hugs to sensual embraces.”
I don’t have a favorite Essential Parfums fragrance, I live in USA.

  • I like very much that it seems to be one with ‘opposing’ qualities: soft and vigorous, I love that it reaches memories and emotions and I do have the feeling that this is an embracing fragrance. I never had the chance to try any Essential Parfums and I’ll definitely look for them. Hugs from Romania, EU.

  • I haven’t tried anything from this house and it certainly seems that I must. I most intrigued but the use of the beeswax and its combination with the other notes. I look forward to trying this. thank you for the review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I love the way she described the fragrance, it sounded so beautiful to me. The French aroma seems appealing, and I would love to try it. I am in the USA.

  • I love all Kilian perfumes by Calice Becker. I sampled this brand from Indigo and really like nice bergamot by Antoine Maisondieu
    I would love to win
    I am in the USA

  • this sounds like what i’ve been looking for: something musky, fluffy, slightly sweet and comforting, but not too fleeting or insipid– and it hits not only the musk but also the beeswax and lavender obsessions (heretofore separate entities) all in one go. and then the sandalwood ….

alas, i’ve never tried or even heard of essential perfumes. this would be the first. (US)

  • I liked tthat Givaudan is responsible by making sure they’re using sustainable ingredients. Especially since they’re offering other helpful programs for the locals.
The note breakdown sounds simple but interesting.
I havent tried anything from the house.
I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw
