Molecule 01+ Cistus

Escentric Molecules latest release from the Molecule 01 + series, Molecule 01 M + Cistus shines a light on a lesser-known material and does so in a stunning way. It’s a material that is extracted from the rock rose flower, you’ll probably recognise labdanum also extracted from the same source which is the darker and more resinous ingredient used in ambers and incense perfumes. Labdanum feels rougher and raw where as cistus is more airy yet they shares similar facets, think of cistus as labdanum’s elegant sister. Editor- in-Chief Michelyn in conversation with perfumer Geza Schöen got the low down on the technical differences here along with his creative choice for M + Cistus.

Here is an excerpt from Geza Schöen’s email message to our Editor-in Chief, Michelyn Camen when she learned about Molecule 01 M + Cistus and his answers to her questions regarding extraction and the difference between labdanum and cistus.

The quality we used in Molecule 01 + Cistus is an absolute. The difference between cistus and labdanum lies in the solvents and/or heating processes used to obtain the extract. The cistus absolute
we used at 4% in the scent is a very clean, less green, and concentrated version of the cistus plant. Naturally, the aromatic leathery facet inspired me to chisel it into an M+ here. The amalgamation of Iso E Super with cistus worked very well, and so Molecule 01 M + Cistus was born. We also didn’t really have anything leathery in our collection, so we felt cistus was the perfect fit to complete the M+ series.”-Geza Schöen

For me, Cistus is the yin to labdanum’s darker yang. It has a lighter and more ethereal feel like the rock rose petals opening up with a complex transparent delicate feel as if made from fine layers of silk. It also has a darkness to it with honeyed leather and amber tones giving a terpenic zing. The analogy of carving it into the Iso E Super fits perfectly of how I view the Escentric Molecule series as minimal sculptures that reveal nature and ourselves in their beautiful use of minimalism and reflection.

Molecule 01 M + Cistus opens with an earthy green freshness and zing, reminding me a little of M + Ginger but with the brightness of the ginger dialed way down and yet it keeps that energetic freshness. Its cistus’s pungent bite that emerges with a soft honeyed aroma that slowly builds in the heart of M + Cistus. This opening phase is where M + Cistus is at its most floral, yet the way it’s been sculpted with the Iso e super makes it feel like it’s been carved in a soft shimmering cloud of woods and musks. Think of a balsamic stained glass whose edges soften into a fine velvet powder. Cistus’s smoky incense facets merge with the Iso E Super giving an ethereal feel that I find very calming. There’s a subtle earthy warmth from the cistus that when its merged with Iso E Super feels like it’s wrapping itself around you, doing what Molecule 01 does but with beautiful dark and light tones giving a suave quiet allure to M + Cistus.

Wearing  Molecule 01 M + Cistus feels very clean aromatic, bright and hovers in the air, like an musky incense cloud. Yet within the heart lies a dark honeyed facet that gives cistus a subliminal purr or light kiss of animalics, it’s a gentle allure of softness that I can’t get enough of, like ambergris dirtiness in the best way. It also reminds me of sheep’s wool, that oily aroma they have on their wool but my memory of this encounter with the sheep is more specific. I’m remembering ones from Norway with the scent of the fjord sea air and wild aromatics of nature woven into this scent. The animalic purr in M + Cistus offers a rich, honeyed balsamic depth, serving as a clever contrast that allows the brightness of the cistus to radiate, while deeper purrs emerge through the gentle woody musks of the Iso E Super molecule making it quietly seductive.

All these subtle aspects of the cistus absolue tease out the darker side of Molecule 01 M + Cistus as they come together in the dry down. Things get woodier and drier tuning into an earthy leather. Again, it feels like it wraps around you, forming to your body the way a leather jacket would, M + Cistus stands out in the M+ line, maybe a tougher cousin to the silky (and one of my favourites M + Iris. Molecule 01 M + Cistus feels like aged leather, carved and sculpted rich yet supple with a velvety lining. It seems to radiate a darker glow, creating an alluring presence as you wear it. has expertly refined all the rough edges with his chisel, resulting in a beautifully minimal haze. Wearing M + Cistus reminds me of my favourite series of Rothko paintings, the Seagram Murals. They’re much darker in tone  than his usual paintings but what makes me think of this series is how the shades of purple, burgundy, black and deep blue bleed into each other and glow. M + Cistus also has the same meditative feel I get in their presence and has jumped to the top of my favourites from this series and is much more complex than you might imagine.

I enjoyed J’s review of Escentric Molecules M+Cistus. I liked how he contrasted the green floral aspects of cistus with the musky woody incense of Iso E Super. My favorite is still the original Molecule 01, but I’d love to experience the new flanker with the addition of cistus. I live in Maryland USA.

  • “ Molecule 01 M + Cistus feels like aged leather, carved and sculpted rich yet supple with a velvety lining.” This was enough to make up my mind about buying this if I don’t win the raffle. I don’t believe I’ve smelled cistus-based leather…

  • Hey who would not want Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 M, not me. I am excited about this giveaway and hope I will win this giveaway.
    With love from Seattle USA

  • I want to say thank you to Escentric molecules and Cafleurebon for the opportunity.
After reading J’s review the thing that appealed the most to me was the way he expressed the fragrance as a earthly green freshness with zing , this speaks to me the most because I love green freshness smells , they appeal to me more than blue fragrances. I also want to say that my favorite Escentric molecule fragrance is Molecule 02 , because of the ambroxan note it helps propel the Fragrance. It is currently the only fragrance I own from them , I love using it to layer other fragrances as well.

    – thank you again for the team at Escentric molecules and of course cafleurebon.

  • Fragrances that utilize unique notes have been trending for a while and when done well, create an interesting olfactive experience, Molecule 01 M + Cistus highlights Cistus with its airy nature which is similar to labdanum– both distinctively amber and woody aromas. J describes it as a bright, clean aromatic yet slightly animalic with an “ambergris dirtiness.” It is a scent that is dark refined and earthy.

  • Cistus is one of those notes I would always see in fragrances but never knew what it was or the extraction process. I like that J mentioned that even though the line is based around 1 note with ISO E Super, this one gives the sensation of a more complex overall composition. It’s a testament of what great perfumery can achieve and the creator behind it. Another great addition to the line! I’m located in the USA.

  • The concept of molecule 01 has always escaped for me to fully appreciate. Some smell it…some don’t. It’s a scent but ..
Not really. J’s description cleared things up. Rather than now understanding it logically…I get it emotionally. Molecule 1 + Cistus exudes strength without hardness. It is resilient but tender, serene but not passive. It takes you to an emotional place where you feel safely held but fully seen. I don’t have any Escentric Molecule fragrances…hence no favourite. – Vaughn Texas.

  • I was carefully reading the essay out of genuine curiosity on Iso E Super when I caught a glimpse and became distracted by the obvious Rothko paintings. Wait. What? I never gave much thought to the striking kinship between minimalist perfumes and minimalist paintings. Two entirely different mediums with no overlap. Right? The sensory intent is the same. The emotional architecture is the same. Both mediums are being used to reduce form to essentials, asking the wearer or the viewer to surrender to an atmosphere rather than a story. I enjoy a fragrance that takes me on a journey and tells me a story. For me to think otherwise is sorta . . . . well I don’t know what. I’m in the US.

What struck me in J’s review is how beautifully cistus is described as the yin to labdanum’s yang—airy, honeyed, and sculpted into Iso E Super like a luminous shadow. That image of a musky incense cloud with a quiet animalic purr really made me want to experience it on skin. My favorite from the line is M+ Iris, which I love for its silky, elegant glow—so I’d be thrilled to explore this darker, more leathery sibling. I’m in the USA

  • Reading this line appealed to me, “Wearing Molecule 01 M + Cistus feels very clean aromatic, bright and hovers in the air, like an musky incense cloud”. My favorite is Molecule O1. US

  • I live in NJ USA
My favorite part of J’s review is the way he paints thew multilayered aspects of Cistus, but especially how Escentric Molecules uses it. I was looking to add something leathery to my collection for the Fall and this has piqued my interest! Also “Terpenic Zing” is a great band name. Escentric Molecules 01 is my favorite to date.

    Good luck to all

  • I have the escentric 01 and 02.
I had my eye on M + iris but j wearescentient review and Geza Schoen quote convinced me I need to get my nose on M + Cistus
    Great opportunity

  • What appeals to me about J’s review is the way it blends the technical details with the artistic descriptions. I could almost imagine the cistus opening as I read it. I especially enjoyed the comparisons to labdanum, Rothko’s paintings, and even sheep’s wool, which gave the fragrance such a vivid and textured feel. My favorite Escentric Molecules fragrance is Molecule 01 + Mandarin, because its bright, uplifting freshness always feels so energizing and effortless to wear.

  • My favorite of the group has been the + Iris but I do love the Black Tea one! I wish he would continue with the series. A + Fig or Plum, a + Champaca or Boronia or Blue Lotus…. Even a + Rose and use an authentic Taif Rose or Damascene would be amazing. Even a + Cream for layering? Could you imagine? And a + Violet….. well as you can see I’d love a lot!
I am located in the U.S. thank you for the generous giveaway.

  • The extraction process and varying elements in this fragrance sleek to the duality of science and art of perfumery. I like how this is desrviced as a “haze” of dark leathery silkines “expertly chiseled”. M1 has always struck me as an aura. Something teetering between the physical and ethereal elements. Molecule 01 is my favorite, it perfectly invokes that ethereal aura vibe. I live in NY, US

  • Laura Hamrick says:

My favorite is Molecule + Iris- my go to comfort scent! Km a citrus fan and the “darker side” sounds tempting! I’m in Louisville Kentucky

  • I have a bottle of the original Molecule 01. IsoE super works really well with my skin. I am familiar with labdanum, less so with Cistus. I think pairing a leathery note with the original would work really well, particularly with the cooler weather. MD, USA

  • The vivid imagery and the use of unique diction made this a special read. An appreciation of the many facets that go into ones “brainchild” can easily be overlooked. The incorporation of rare materials all the while making it effervescent and light shows a delicate precision that not everyone can appreciate. Here we have a testament to the craft, the art, and the love that goes into a bottle. A lot of words, hope it’s more than one could bargain for. From North Carolina, USA.

  • I love the Escentric Molecules line of fragrance.
I am not familiar with the Cistus note.
I have used almost a whole bottle of the ginger so I am expecting nothing less from the Cistus.
    Thanks for the giveaways.

  • what really appeals to me about J’s review of M + Cistus is how beautifully he described the contrast between cistus and labdanum. I love the idea of cistus being the “elegant sister” with its honeyed, leathery, and airy qualities, sculpted so seamlessly with Iso E Super. The way the review compared the fragrance to Rothko’s Seagram Murals really captured my imagination—I can almost picture the darker glow and meditative aura while wearing it. My favorite Escentric Molecules fragrance so far is Molecule 01, because of its subtle yet captivating presence, but M + Cistus sounds like it would quickly become a new favorite.

  • I believed the hype and really want to purchase Molecule 01 but I never got the chance, every time i tried the distributors either did not have it or they had not heard of it. Been in the US for 4 years now, already impatient to try the new one out – I love fall fragrances <3, but even more than that – if the bottle looks good, my nose stands up straight and the smell just hits different, the representation of the bottle alone makes me want to own it. Angel's Paradise by Killian is one of my favorite designs, along with Novae Vanilla by Atelier des Ors.

    I live in Missouri, USA.

  • I really enjoyed J’s review of Molecule 01 M + Cistus — the way cistus is described as “airy yet sharing facets with labdanum … like labdanum’s elegant sister” particularly resonated with me. The idea of a “musky incense cloud” with subtle honeyed leather tones feels very intriguing and different. My favorite Escentric Molecule fragrance so far has been Molecule 01, because of its clean simplicity and how personal it feels on skin. I live in the USA.

  • Great review of your impression of M+Cistus J! I loved this statement (The animalic purr in M + Cistus offers a rich, honeyed balsamic depth, serving as a clever contrast that allows the brightness of the cistus to radiate, while deeper purrs emerge through the gentle woody musks of the Iso E Super molecule, making it quietly seductive.) My favorite is still Molecule 01; in fact, I have a spare. I am open to having a new favorite based on J’s review. I am in the US. Thanks for the interesting content and the generosity of Escentric Molecules.

  • Thanks for the fascinating review! What really stood out is how M + Cistus takes the raw, smoky sweetness of cistus and lets it float over the airy woods and Iso E Super—it feels minimal yet rich. I love that contrast: green, resinous warmth paired with quiet, clean musky woods. It seems like a scent that whispers rather than shouts, warm and contemplative. I’d love to try Molecule 01 + Cistus!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I recently tried most of this lineup—a bottle of the M + Ginger came home with me—but I think I missed the Cistus variant. I’m intrigued by the way the cistus interacts with the Iso E Super here, at times earthy green, pungent floral, honeyed, leathery, and then warm, smoky incense. Molecule 01 + Cistus is on the more expressive end of Escentric Molecules fragrances and is a particularly apt combination. Hope to try it.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Very informative review with so many details. I did not realize Rock Rose looked like this and is responsible for Cistus and Labdanum! Would love to give this one a try! Arkansas, USA

  • foreverscents says:

I like the way Eccentric Molecules explores a particular note in their recent releases. I love labdanum for its resinous darkness. I never knew that cistus came from the rock rose flower. J perfectly captured the fragrance by writing that it is “like aged leather, carved and sculpted rich yet supple with a velvety lining.” What a gorgeous image.
