Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 + Black Tea (Geza Schoen) 2023 + Minimalist Meditation Giveaway

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 + Black Tea

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 has always felt like a Donald Judd sculpture to me. One of his minimal block works made from mirror polished materials that have a distinct structure, but vanish into the space as they reflect their surroundings. Iso E Super or iso gamma super, Geza Schoen’s slightly tweaked version of the molecule as it’s rumoured to be, is intoxicating and whose scent seems to enhance your skins own aroma. Iso E Super has multiple facets; it’s cedary in a powdery way, as if the wood has been atomised into a fine musky dust cloud. There’s a hint of spicy warm with soft purr of amber, giving a thicker feel to the powderiness while pushing it closer to incense smoke, with subtle dark leathery facets making it feel calming, with a flirtatious wink. The closet real life experience I’ve had to it would be that intense smell of a sauna in Helsinki. Cedar wood heated into a powdery cozy steam, but much softer like a hug that wraps you in powdery velvet. It’s an experiential molecule whose views come in and out of focus as you wear it, similar to looking at Donald Judd’s sculptural works, a kind of invisible physicality capturing an elegantly minimalism.

The M + Series, now with six iterations M + Guaiac and M + Ginger being part of this second trilogy release with M+ Black Tea, feel like you are no longer alone with the Donald Judd work anymore, other artworks gives flashes of colour and tone as they pass over the mirrored surface, giving new shape to this minimalist form. Think Michael Craig-Martin’s object works reflected in the surfaces or  Hilma AF Klint’s spiritual paintings, bringing new angles of experience.

Geza speaks of these three perfumes as one being a top note, M + Ginger, M + Black Tea as the heart and M + Guaiac Wood as the base. Having spent some time with only M + Black Tea it has me thinking that Herr Schoen might have hidden a layering combination in plain sight, so that when all three are layered a secret perfume is released? I say this because M+ Black Tea has shared elements of both the other two. He mentions in an interview with Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen that “Molecule + is perfumery deconstructed.” Maybe a little wink again at this hidden combination urging us to reconstruct? I’ll let that question linger as I remove my ‘Always Sunny Charlie’ hat and get back to minimal elegance of M + Black Tea, which is a beautiful composition in itself. One of my favourites from the M + series along with M + Iris.

Molecule 01 +Black Tea

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 + Black Tea

Molecule 01 + Black Tea Opens with blast of warm, slightly spiced citruses, bergamot with a slice of ginger giving a creamy smooth woody freshness swirled into that familiar aroma of black tea. Imagine wet wood being slowly heated, soft sweet citruses start to rise off its surface with cool cedar woods leaking through. It feels warm yet slightly astringent which is countered well with the sweeter almost floral aromas. There’s just a hint of bitterness that captures the taste of tea expertly as it stirred into an elegant cosy perfume. It feels airy and refreshing with a gentle earthiness, like lemon has been squeezed into black tea. Geza Schoen used his own black tea infusion which appears in the first half of M + Black Tea with a máte tea absolue working in the base, it s as if you drink it like a darker heavier tea, with subtle leathery notes, which whisper through this composition.

With the brighter citrus notes from the opening softening, more of the now contemporary classic Molecule 01 is revealed. It’s powdery velvety woodiness wraps you in an elegant cosy slight smoky musk that’s reminiscent of guaiac woods smokiness and gentle vanillic smoothness, it picks up more of the máte tea aroma too, facets of light dry hay and whispers of dry tobacco. M + Black Tea hums with a quieter ginger like spice also present in máte tea which adds to th ewarmth of the iso e super base. Again that image of a sauna returns as M + Black Tea wears like a soft steam from a teacup scents you, hovering above your skin. It feels soft and light to wear, but knowing the power of Molecule 01, this leaves a seductive scent trail wherever you go. Molecule 01 + Black Tea is cozy minimalism done to its finest, it’s a meditation on the beauty of simplicity. An utter joy to wear.

Notes: Iso E Super, Black Tea, Máte Tea Absolue.

I have been saving my pennies for M+ Black Tea and M+ Iris and then M+ Patchouli will be next on my list. I love this idea of reconstruction being built into the very idea of deconstruction. That human desire to build, take apart, and then put back together–and how differently we see/smell/experience the art in each phase. I am a theatre artist and am currently working on a play that deconstructs Moliere’s The Misanthrope–would love to have more to deconstruct and reconstruct in the process.

  • The description of the Nordic steam room really brought this review to life. I really enjoy iso-e in perfumery and would love to smell this one as well as the layering combo theory mentioned. Champaca from Ormonde Jayne is my favorite Schoen fragrance.

Geza Schoen is a perfumer I’ve heard in passing but don’t have a favorite fragrance yet. I never thought of the idea of combining multiple single note fragrances but it can indeed create a super fragrance if you will. I am a tea drinker on my own, daily, and love the idea of a tea fragrance, especially one you can add to any fragrance on your collection for added herbal properties. I’m located in the US.

I like the image of soft steam coming off of a teacup. I love citrus and ginger in fragrances, and I’m glad those 2 notes are perceived here as well. I love the original Molecule 01, and this sounds like a wonderful variation of the original. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I love the description of Molecule 01 as cedar atomized as a “fine musky dust cloud” with a wink. The bitter black and green mate facets sound like they would build on the relaxing vibe of M01, and it sounds amazing, as I already love Molecule 01. Not sure the 3 “plus” scents are meant for layering together bc the whole purpose was deconstruction (and minimalism ) but then I haven’t tried it! Would love a bottle of this ! CA, USA

  • J’s theory makes me think I really need to try M + Guaiac and M + Ginger! I have smelled a sample of M + Black Tea and I think it’s beautiful; J’s description captures it perfectly. My favorite Geza Schöen fragrance is, without a doubt, Boudicca Wode. I live in NY, USA.

  • Ha! Schoen created Diesel. A bottle was gifted to me when I was high school many moons ago. I knew I was Him when I walked the halls. Big fan and owner of M+ Patchouli. I love black tea. I love the idea black tea steam waft about clinging to my skin.

  • I love this brand.
I have not heard lot about it recently.
I love the idea of taking a note and building it out as.far as one can.
I would equate it to a Niel Young, one note guitar guitar solo.
It’s about how the note rings out and the rhythm that it is played.
    Love the site and giveaways.

  • I kind of like this interesting theory of hiding an Easter egg in a fragrance 🙂 I’ve only experienced the original Molecule 1 and it sounds like M+ Black Tea is going to be a banger. I’m in USA

  • I haven’t tried any of the M+ scents, so I don’t know what to think of J’s theory. But I love black tea scents. Don’t really have a single favorite Geza Schöen fragrance…though I like a bunch of the Ormonde Jayne frags he’s perfumed. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • My two favorites are +Tea and +Iris also! And my son loved it so much I gifted it to him so I would love a new bottle of +Tea. My hopes is that Geza makes a floral series with +Violet, +Osthmanthus and +Rose (or I’ll gladly accept magnolia). Then a fruit series with +Plum, +[spiced] Date (or apricot!) and +Fig. Imagine?!!! Oooh i can dream!!

Thank you for the giveaway. I am located in the U.S.

I think it’s a brilliant idea to collect a few Molecules and layer them, I agree that it may be intentional and we can experiment. Standing alone, Black Tea sounds like a deliciously soft and warm fragrance with a bite of ginger and the unmistakable scent of tea. I can imagine the scent trail this would leave. Count me in. I live in Oregon.

Notes: Iso E Super, Black Tea, Máte Tea Absolue. An interesting theory by J really leaves me wondering about the layering combinations and similarity shared to others on this series. But I am intrigued by the notes of black tea and mate tea absolue. Simplicity done to perfection. A house that I don’t have any experience with I am afraid. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I was not familiar with Geza Schoen‘a work outside of Molecule 01 and am surprised to find he has created over 80 perfumes across multiple brands and genres, my favorite being from the 4711 aqua colonia line, osmonde Jayne Taif, and 1872 by Clive Christian. The Molecule line imparts a clean crispness that I do not get from other skin enhancing scents. I have tried the original, black tea, and ginger versions and found them all pleasant and easy to layer with each other or other scents so I completely agree with the theory. I would love to have a full bottle to experiment with; my samples were quite small. I live in Washington DC in USA

  • The theory is interesting and detailed. I have already smelled the three in a sample set so my thoughts on them hasn’t changed much with the review. A fave from Geza is Orris Noir. US

  • As a relative newbie to fragrances beyond B&BW :), I’ve not yet sampled any of the EM fragrances yet, though the sample kits are on my “to buy” list. I do have a love for anything cedar and citrus, and adore how they smell on my skin. I look forward to learning more about not only this brand, but also this innovative mind behind the fragrances.

  • I love the simplicity of this concept. In a world that often feels overwhelming, there is a calmness that is very appealing to this whole series. I’m in the USA. Thank you, for the draw.

  • The vivid description of the Nordic steam room made this review truly immersive. I have a deep appreciation for iso-e in perfumery and would love to experience this scent, along with the layering combination that was discussed. Among Schoen’s creations, Champaca from Ormonde Jayne remains my favorite. USA

  • Escentric 01 is my go-to and I also layer it with Molecule 01. Geza Schoen is a great perfumer, and I would love to smell M+ Black Tea layered with it.
My favorite Geza Schoen perfume is Tolu from Ormonde Jayne

  • by the end of this review, i could imagine the experience of wearing a scent that depicts hovering my nose over a warm cup of black tea, the swirling steam rising – it so much connects to the line “powdery velvety woodiness wraps you in an elegant cosy slight smoky musk”. especially nice for my cold winters in minnesota, usa. the layering theory does make sense, but i am more interested in this connection to art works, as i can relate deeply to colors and patterns depicting scents. it would be fascinating to layer one or two of these fragrances and find what the corresponding artwork would then be for this combination.
i don’t yet have a favorite by geza schoen but i have been curious about Orris Noir by Ormonde Jayne. thanks for the lovely review!

  • Layering fragrances from the M+ series produces a secret perfume? Interesting. I’ll need to get a sample set to test out this theory. I’ve only tried the original EM Molecule 01 and I do like the way Iso E super interacts with my skin. J’s description of EM Molecule 01 + Black Tea does sound like a relaxing sauna visit with a steaming cup of tea. MD, USA.

  • I love how reviews here often introduce me to something new, totally unrelated to fragrance. In this case, the sculpture of Donald Judd, which make for a wonderful image search. I’m also not familiar with Geza Schöen’s work. The Molecule 01 + series is an interesting lineup and Molecule 01 + Black Tea sounds particularly intriguing, with its warmly astringent tea and citrus combination. The characteristics of Molecule 01 are well suited to the smell of hot tea steaming up from the mug below. This sounds wonderful. And maybe J is right, and layering this with the other two in the series would be even better.

    I’m in the USA.

  • What’s funny to me is that I still haven’t tried the original and famous Molecule 01. This sounds like a relaxing fragrance. Citrus opening that softens and powdery note starts to come in to play as well as some spice.

    Thanks for the giveaway, California

    Hi there,

I love reading about EMM’s latest updated fragrances. I’ve had mixed results trying them on my skin, but I’ll persist! Elements of mate, sauna, black tea, and citruses seem destined for a strong match with others in my collection. I’m not familiar with Geza Schoen’s work, but will look him up and find out more about his creations. Thank you so much for this chance to experience this cozy scent, firsthand. I am located in NYC/USA.

  • Black tea is one of my favorite beverages – and I love it in fragrance too. I think it would pair perfectly as a note with the minimalistic vibe of the Escentric line.
I particularly enjoy Sampaquita by Ormonde Jayne as one of Schoen’s creations…
    I’m in the USA.

  • I love the Molecule 01 + Black Tea captures all of my favorite ways to drink tea: at first it’s an iced drink on a summer day, with a thirst-quenching bitterness; then it’s a warm cup on a winter morning, slightly spiced and cozy. J’s review reflects the beauty of this scent perfectly! My favorite from Geza Schöen so far.
    Cheers from Wisconsin, USA

  • Escentric Molecules has always made incredible fragrances for my taste, both standalone and for layering. Molecule 01 + Black Tea sounds incredibly cozy which I love. Really enjoyed J’s in depth review of each present note, haven’t thought of layering those fragrances together but definitely an interesting theory that I might have to try out. Favorite fragrance by Geza Schoen has got to be Molecule 01.
    In USA

  • J’s theory of the deconstruction being a hint to construct the perfume by layering the trilogy fascinates me and reminds me of performance art, which often emphasizes the process of a particular discipline. I am also a big fan of tea, and J’s description—the warm of the wood, the astringency, a hint of lemon—makes me think of preparing tea. I live in the USA.

  • This couldn’t be a more perfect blend from this house! I love tea scents and this one, combined with iso E Super is perfect! “hums with a quieter ginger like spice” sounds so cozy!
    I live in the USA.

  • The idea of Molecule 01 + Black Tea as a minimalist meditation in scent is truly intriguing. I love how Escentric Molecules elevates single molecules into something deeply personal and transformative. Black tea, with its rich yet airy presence, seems like the perfect complement to the velvety transparency of Iso E Super—both grounding and ethereal.

I can imagine this fragrance creating an intimate aura, evolving subtly throughout the day like the quiet ritual of steeping tea. I’d love the chance to experience its meditative quality firsthand.

I live in US – Thank you for this generous giveaway!

I am a big fan of Geza Schően, especially his work for Ormande Jayne. I love to wear Ormande Jayne Man.
I enjoyed J’s review. The art references allowed me to contemplate Geza Schően’s Eccentric Molecules M+compositions in a new light. Black Tea sounds warm and inviting, light, soft and seductive. I am curious about the citrus notes mingling with the black tea notes.
    I live in the USA.

  • Lovely review J! I’ve always been curious about this brand and have always wanted to sample them all even though it seems so intimidating. My big fear is that I’ll want them all haha. While perusing the collection I always wondered what it would smell like to spray them together as your theory suggested. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of this and I’m sure it would be gorgeous to the nose. This was such a good review though even if I don’t win the bottle I’m absolutely getting a sample because everything you described is what I have been looking for in a scent. Black tea perfumes have been my obsession lately because I wanted one that is now discontinued and impossible to find, some maybe this will be the one to perfectly represent the note for me. I live in Roswell Georgia in the USA.

  • I’d like to be in a sauna in Helsinki right now! It’s snowing and windy here. Having a snow day from work so enjoying the website. I’d love to try this fragrance. Sounds divine. I have to admit the original I couldn’t smell and I haven’t revisiting this line. I think I’ve been missing out. Thanks. USA.

    Oh my…
This offering sounds captivating. The description of wet steamed cedar is polarizing to say the least. I have very fond memories of growing up around a sauna and to have that memory in a bottle sounds amazing.
Thank you for the wonderful review
