ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell Review (2021/Antoine Lie) + Warding off the Cold Draw

Eris Parfums Green Spell review

There hurtles in at the hall-door an unknown rider,

One the greatest on ground in growth of his frame:

From broad neck to buttocks so bulky and thick,

And his loins and his legs so long and so great,

Half a giant on earth I hold him to be,

But believe him no less than the largest of men,

And that the seemliest in his stature to see, as he rides,

For in the back and in breast though his body was grim,

His waist in its width was worthily small,

And formed with every feature in fair accord was he.

Great wonder grew in hall at his hue most strange to see,

For man and gear and all were green as green could be.”  –Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Green Spell by ERIS PARFUMS opens with a crush of green growing things, wildly scrabbling at cracks and fissures to climb higher and open more leaves to the sun. It’s a leafy green, lightly trampled, its vines releasing pungent sap. Tendrils at first tentatively touch crumbling mortar between worn bricks, but eventually form a confident curtain of green—a tangle of verdant, dark, variegated leaves that might swing aside to reveal the locked door to Frances Hodgson Burnett’s Secret Garden, its red-breasted robin chirping encouragement from within.

After this initial blast of dense fig leaf and galbanum greenery, Green Spell shifts and softens as though caught and dispersed by a bright breeze. It transforms into a more transparent wash of fresh green as it moves closer to the skin. The effect is of newer leaves, protected from the harsher elements within that imagined garden, their lighter green basking in dappled sunlight. In the depths of winter, when the ground freezes and the days are short; when the fir balsam scent of holiday season has faded; when the colder days loom ahead into unbroken weeks without thaw; when forced air heat dries and deadens scent—this is when the yearning for spring takes root. Seeds lie dormant, waiting to germinate and sprout. The flavor of crisp celery becomes a juicy, green revelation instead of a high-fiber chore. Bathing becomes a ritual of warmth and humidity, releasing the pressure of desiccated sinuses and reviving cold hands.  ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell offers a reprieve—a reminder that spring is not that far off. It’s airy, vegetal, and transportive. Despite the dry winter air, it offers a wash of fresh leafiness that lifts the spirit.

In the cycle of seasons, winter can feel like a dead time of hibernation and lassitude. Some days, it’s too cold and dark, and the instinct is to curl up under something weighted and cozy until a warmer day breaks. “ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell is a blast of happiness, an homage to nature that is sparkling and joyful,” according to perfumer Antoine Lie.  Perhaps Green Spell can be worn as a talisman to help ward off the cold, or as a reminder that the planet has just tilted on its axis to position one hemisphere a little further away from the sun. Who knows—its soft, refreshing greenness might even hasten the coming of spring.

Green Spell by ERIS PARFUMS launches January 1, 2021. The perfumer is Antoine Lie.

Notes: Italian Mandarin, French Black Currant absolute (Bourgeons Cassis),  Iranian Galbanum (oil and resinoid), Egyptian Violet Leaf absolute,  French Narcissus absolute, Tomato leaf accord, Fig leaf accord, Haitian Vetiver, Ambroxan, Musk.

Disclosure: A 10ml sample was provided for this review by ERIS PARFUMS. My opinions are my own.

  • I am the biggest fan of Antoine’s work! I loved Dalya’s descriptions of the depth & dimensionality of these verdant notes. Based in USA

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

This fragrance seems to utilize a lot of interesting green tones. I like the way that the fragrance has the ability to transport the wearer into the more warm and hopeful days of spring.

  • I’m always searching for the perfect scent to wear while enjoying my garden. I do enjoy green fragrances, on my wishlist it goes! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff and for the sweet discount code! Happy New Year all! Mich USA

  • What a lovely review! I feel like Dalya was in my own head. I’ve been feeling so suffocated and constrained in this dry house and I’m desperate to claw my way out into wet, green air. My spring fever has come really early this year (I think brought on by re-reading The Lord of the Rings!) Now I’m dreaming of long hikes in the mossy woods and all the things I’ll plant this year. I would love the chance to experience this fragrance!

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love Ms Herman’s fragrances and Green Spell had sounded beautiful since I first read of it’s release. I love green fragrances in the early spring and anything with a note of tomato leaf gets my attention. I’m sure this will be another retro masterpiece and I can’t wait to smell it. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love how assertively green this sound, especially the sharp, galbanum and fig opening! I also love the Eris scents I’ve tried, and their clear straddling of the vintage/new niche aesthetic. Night Flower is my favorite–it feels like a more floral, less leathery version of Shalimar parfum. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Firstly I love the story of Eris. The goddess of Chaos. Secondly, those green nails are to die for. Thirdly, I need something to remind me that Spring is coming. I need a green burst of joyfulness. I don’t think I’ve tried anyof Eris’s other scents. I am in the US.

  • This article really gives the feeling of a battle of the green forces of spring and new life against the deadening winter. So many green aspects you describe, I’d be shocked if I don’t absolutely love it. Heard of it before but haven’t tried anything by Eris.

  • Green fragrances symbolize growth and rebirth and this sounds like a perfect scent for a brand new year. The ingredients from the note list seem impeccably sourced. I’m particularly interested in the Bourgeons Cassis and French Narcissus Absolute. Winter barely got started but I’m yearning for spring already. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell seems like it live up to its name. Antoine Lie has a proven track record of great abstract perfumes. I think he did a similar kind of perfume for Costume National, too. I own Belle de Jour from ERIS. USA

  • Something that really interested me about the fragrance was how green all of its descriptions were. I am interested in it since I have never tried a fragrance that has been described as so green. I do not have a favorite Eris Parfum because I have yet to try this brand.

  • I can never say no to a green scent that shouts nature, especially when it’s created by the master Antoine Lie. I have never had this combination before. (USA)

  • Wilson Chin says:

This sounds beautiful! I love a green scent, and I love anything that reminds me of The Secret Garden! I don’t know Eris Parfum, but the bottles are beautiful!

  • It would be so nice to have a green scent like this to tide us over till spring… And this sounds so very green from Dalya. I won a sample of Eris MXXX and it was wonderful, so I would love to try this one too. The idea of a talisman is intriguing to me, for a perfume, but it makes sense! Thank you for the review and the draw!

  • I’m interested in this perfume for the tomato leaf accord. Have not tried anything from the house as of yet. US

  • Bryant Worley says:

Dalya did a wonderful job of explaining the powerful nature of this fragrance. She helps us to see that, although winter weather can blunt our joy, due to its bleakness and dreariness, once applied, Green Spell can brightness our mood, and uplift our spirit as, according to Antoine Lie, “ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell is a blast of happiness, an homage to nature that is sparkling and joyful,”. And it is that blast of happiness which, while metaphorically, warding off the cold, will serve as a reminder that, just a little while longer, and Spring will be here. And who wouldn’t want that?

I have never tried an ERIS PARFUM, but after scanning the website, besides Green Spell, Mx. and MA BÊTE are two that sound just right for me.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • We live in an apartment downtown in a city, so except for my daily walks, I am rarely outside these days. Even then, it’s all concrete under my feet, and trees hemmed into squares surrounded by concrete. I love this area, but in these pandemic times i have been longing for more green in my life. My favorite by Eris is Belle de Jour.

  • I’ve had the opportunity to try this fragrance and I love its green, breezy quality. The tomato leaf note is prominent to my nose and this is probably my favorite interpretation of the note. I love Barbara’s line’s concept and inspirations, as well as her book, which I regularly consult. My favorite creation by Eris is Mxxx. I am in the DFW area.

  • I count myself among the handful whose very first fragrance was a tomato leaf based concoction, supported by a brisk lemon, spicy coriander, juniper and warm amber. I wonder if anyone can guess what it was? I suppose it was from that moment that I became a green fragrance lover. Which is why I resonate so deeply with Dalya’s imagery. And of course, no more has a scent that encapsulates the transition between winter’s cold tidings of dismay and a timely spring revival been more appropriate and needed than right now (in more ways than one). Too often have today’s popular fragrances been bereft of a sharp galbanum in favour of sugar or aromatic je ne sais quoi. Green Spell seems like the perfect remedy to remind us that we do indeed live on a green planet and that without chlorophyll, we might as well be eating dirt. Plus…Antoine did Ralph Lauren’s Romance for men which I thoroughly enjoyed back in the day and believe had notes of ginseng and celery? Dude knows his greens. Definitely would be interested in trying this one! MI, USA

  • What a beautiful review !!! So nice comparison with end of winter and green, leafy plant.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Eris Parfums, but have read so many intrigued reviews about Eris perfumes, especially about Ma Bete.
    USA

  • Dalya’s comment about Green Spell – “Who knows—its soft, refreshing greenness might even hasten the coming of spring.” makes me want to try it. With Covid-19 expected to worsen still during the winter, despite the vaccines, anything to hasten the coming of spring is welcome. I liked the pictures and the fact that it is a very green fragrance, something that is in short supply these days. Appreciate the draw, the discount, and the review. I am not familiar with this brand, so it’ll be great to try it. Writing from the USA.

  • Yes, I need a reprieve from winter. Haven’t seen the sun for days. I love the accompanying artwork for this piece. I would love to win this blast of happiness. I have another fragrance with tomato leaf and it’s an underused note in my opinion. I have not smelled anything from this line, my local shop does carry it and I will have to investigate. Thanks for the chance. USA

  • I am interested in trying this fragrance which seems like it might be considered vernal according to Dalya’s review. I haven’t tried any Eris Parfums fragrances yet. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • It sounds as though this is the forecast of Spring to come. Green to lift the spirits from the gray winter. Many thanks to Dayla for a most charming review and many thanks to ERIS PARFUMS for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Juan_hernan says:

I am interested in this fragrance based on Dayla’s review because everything about this fragrance just shouts green. Since I am starting to learn about how to recognize types of different fragrances, having such a green fragrance would be nice. I do not have a favorite Eris Parfum fragrance yet though.

  • I haven’s sampled any of Eris Parfums but I need to because Green spell sounds like a winner! I loved the way Dalya wrote “In the cycle of seasons, winter can feel like a dead time of hibernation and lassitude. Some days, it’s too cold and dark, and the instinct is to curl up under something weighted and cozy until a warmer day breaks. “ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell is a blast of happiness, an homage to nature that is sparkling and joyful,” Antoine Lie is a true artist perfumer. California

  • Galbanum! I adore it, plain and simple. But I’ve always experienced it as a burst of green that wears off quickly and am so curious by this reviewer’s description of the initial blast softening and moving closer to the skin. I recently tried Ma Bête by Eris and quickly fell in love. That scent communicates from a distance but then tells a softer story up close. Would love to experience how Green Spell shares its presence. In the US.

Thank you for the review Days!

Reading this makes me think of all the old forests in the Lord of the Rings – Fangorn forest in particular.

I’m imagining walking through it, sunlight streaming through and warming the air with the smell of foliage, the earth, sap and all the life that’s in there.

The trees are watching your walk through and all is well.

I’ve not smelt anything from this house and would love to get my nose on this fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Dalya, great review of ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell. I loved how she described the progession and detail of how each note contributes to the overall fragrance. I love how this fragrance incorporates such a large variety of fresh green notes and I love green fragrances. I would definitely be interested in winning a beautiful fragrance such as this. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • What interested me in this fragrance so much as all of the very interesting green notes all put together which I think would also create a rather interesting effect. This is the first time I have heard of Eris Parfum so I do not have a favourite but it is a brand I would love to try.

  • Green Spell sounds wonderful! I love green fragrances, especially the ones with plenty of galbanum. I haven’t had the chance to try any ERIS fragrances yet and would love to do so. Thanks for the draw; I am in the US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I love green fragrances and this one sounds great. I have not tried Eris yet. New Jersey USA

  • doveskylark says:

I just love the imagery of greenery shooting up through the cracks and fissures…reminds me of courtyard gardens. I never miss the opportunity when it avails to curl up under a blanket, but under the blanket, I dream of a verdant spring. I love the notes in Green spell, especially the galbanum. mandarin, and vetiver.
    I live in the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Beautiful review! Where I live the greener days are far off. I don’t often reach for green scents in the winter but your review has me thinking perhaps I should. I love this combo of fig and tomato leaf. Thanks for the draw, from the US.

  • Thanks for a great review, Dalya! What I find interesting about Green Spell is the different depths of green-ness it has – from a dense greenery to a fresh one close to the skin. I haven’t tried any from this house yet and I’m excited to win. Thanks for this draw. – CA, USA

  • zacharyari23 says:

I haven’t had the chance to try a fragrance from Eris Parfums, but this one sounds very appealing! I am absolutely in love with Haitian Vetiver, so right off the bat I’m excited to try this one. The violet leaf is.another favorite note of mine. Green Spell sounds like winner. I really enjoy reading Dalya’s reviews. Writing from Colorado.

  • I like how this review highlights the ability of this fragrance to anticipate spring with it’s evolving green notes. Barbara is a great creative inspiration, and I hope this launch is a huge success. My favorite Eris perfume is Mxxx. I live in the USA.

  • I’ve been looking forward to the launch of this scent! I’ve never tried this house, but I love galbanum and think that the fig and tomato leaf must really make this a green unlike any of the others I’ve tried. I’m in the US.

  • Thank you Dalya for an engaging review. After being holed up indoors for months on end, a green fragrance will surely lift the spirit and it sounds like Green Spell does just that. I’m in USA
