Make me a cologne I could love, since I am not fond of most colognes’ disappearing act on my skin – and let’s use100 percent botanical ingredients.” ~ an excerpt from Editor- in-Chief Michelyn Camen’s brief to artisanal perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for DSH Perfumes Green Queen

Du junges Grün, du frisches Gras!
Wie manches Herz durch dich genas,
Das von des Winters Schnee erkrankt,
O wie mein Herz nach dir verlangt! ~Erstes Grün, by Justinius Kerner (set to music by Robert Schumann)

Young green, fresh grass,
How many a heart you have healed
That fell ill from winter’s snow,
How great my heart’s desire for you! ~ translation by Richard Stokes

It feels fortuitous that Editor-In-Chief Michelyn Camen’s desire for a lavishly botanical collaboration with award-winning artisanal perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz happened to coincide with both Earth Day and ÇaFleureBon’s 14th anniversary. Appropriately named Green Queen, this aldehydic, verdant floral chypre yields all the pleasure of a vintage classic interwoven with fizzy modernity. Its vivacious sparkle revives the spirit and reminds each of us that spring follows on the heels of winter – always.

I may not merit the title Green Queen – but I’d wager good money that a substantial portion of my perfume collection consists of green fragrances, be they floral, chypre, woody, herbaceous, dry, moist, etc. My family didn’t refer to me as Nature Girl without ample reason: I spent all my free time outdoors, even when we lived in the city. If there was an available tree, I climbed it. When we moved upstate (where there were more Black Angus cattle than people!), I walked barefoot everywhere – even if my destination was quite a few miles away. I slept in the woods with the boys and awakened with twigs and leaves in my hair. I suppose that, if I had my way – I’d like to be that girl again. But since time tarries not with yesterday, the closest I might get would be Green Queen.

Dawn recently sent me a rollerball of Green Queen. Its first impression upon my skin was a brilliant explosion of mouthwatering citruses, leafy abundance, and an effervescent fruity aldehyde. As we are aware, citruses are fleeting, but we’re treated to a surfeit of variety here – each one contributing its own distinct voice while behaving as a chorale in tandem. Dawn’s choice of florals dovetails with those much loved by Michelyn, who has always been partial to orange blossom and jasmine sambac, as well as a judicious dash of patchouli and orris. And when it comes to aldehydes, many of Michelyn’s favorite perfumes back in the day shimmered with them; the kiss of cistus corresponds to her fondness for ambery fragrances. Chypres such as Paco Rabanne Calandre and Chanel’s Cristalle eau de toilette were amongst her go-to scents – both ebulliently elegant and sprinkled with oakmoss and vetiver. I posit that Dawn, Michelyn, and I harbored similar preferences – that’s why DSH Perfumes Green Queen is so satisfying to us, melding memory with the present in a charmed perfume which will stand the test of time. After all, beauty never seems to go out of style.

Green Queen will please anyone on any occasion; it’s that versatile and appealing. I can’t perceive any reason why it should be relegated to a specific season, even while it mirrors the delicious aspects of spring and summer. I don’t appreciate folks telling me what perfume I should wear, in which season or by whom; that is patently ridiculous, in my book. DSH Perfumes Green Queen for ÇaFleureBon blazons a sense of well-being and verdant grace – to which any individual is rightfully privy. I encourage you to sample it and see for yourself, because it is irresistible.

Notes: lemon, cedrat, Tahitian lime, green mandarin, (natural) leafy green accord, neroli, bigarade (bitter orange), (natural) melon aldehyde, (natural) wildflowers accord, sambac jasmine, orris butter, cistus, ambrette seed, patchouli, green oakmossvetiver.

Wow!!! Ida! What a beautiful review of a beautiful fragrance!!! As always, love your expertise and gorgeous descriptions! Yay!!! ❤️❤️❤️

  • The review makes this sound soooo appealing and Summer Ready, but I have to admit that the images chosen to illuminate the text really touched me, especially the second, which reminds me of one of my favorite painters.

Dawn is such an incredible perfumer!! I’m always astounded by how she coaxes things to come out little by little until a beautiful sonata is playing. And this sounds just perfect! A green Chypre is one of my all time favorite genres. I know for sure she nailed it and it’s hers, her signature will be in there. I’m so excited to try this beauty!!! I surely will appreciate it. I am in California, thank you for the chance to win,

I love a good cologne and anything by DSH is worth checking out. The hyacinth perfume with sapphire in the name is one I regret not buying.

Ida’s review draws a picture of playing in nature, a memory of youth. I loved how this cologne extrait was described and it reminds me of my own youth playing in the grasses and climbing trees. I live in Oregon.

I liked Michelyn’s brief about a natural perfume with longevity. I too love an herbaceous fragrance and grew up playing in a tree fort in the woods behind our home, this fragrance “melding memory with the present”. USA

  • So happy to see a 100% botanical perfume in the spotlight! As a fellow natural perfumery enthusiast, Ida’s reviews of natural perfumers are one of my favorite parts of CaFleureBon. I believe the artistry and magic natural perfumers create is second to none – and Dawn’s perfumes are up there with the best!

As a girl who also grew up in the woods, I’d love to try Green Queen and get close to reliving that experience again, even if in perfume form. Best wishes from NJ!

The interesting part is that this will please anyone on any occasion. I have a few chypres in my collection. Not many. I’d love to try this one. Reading this makes me excited for better weather, I love going barefoot outside as much as possible. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Excited for another chance to win this one! I love how Dawn does green perfumes and Ida’s review made it sound so perfect for spring with all the different floral notes. I would love the chance to try it! I’m in MN, USA.

Thanks for the lovely review Ida! I really enjoyed reading your description of this fragrance, especially the citruses, leafy greens and the aldehydes. I’m particularly intigued by the use of melon aldehyde, which I’ve not really heard of before.

I would love to get a chance to sniff this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a wonderful review!
Like you, Green fragrances are my favorite.
Sharp green, citrusy green, woody green–
    I love them all!!
‘mouthwatering citruses and leafy abundance” sound delightful.
Thank you so much for the drawing!

  • Green Queen sounds like the perfect Spring perfume, full of levity and emerald color. I was interested to read in the earlier post about this release how Dawn boosted the staying power of solar citrus with warmer materials in the drydown and about natural aldehydes derived from botanical sources. Ida’s wonderful review highlights just how wonderfully these elements came together. I like the oil format too. This will be among my next DSH samples and I hope to try it soon.

I’m in the midwest, USA. Thanks for the giveaway!
