DSH Perfumes Green Queen For ÇaFleureBon image by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz
“Make me a cologne I could love, since I am not fond of most colognes’ disappearing act on my skin – and let’s use100 percent botanical ingredients.” ~ an excerpt from Editor- in-Chief Michelyn Camen’s brief to artisanal perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz for DSH Perfumes Green Queen
Du junges Grün, du frisches Gras!
Wie manches Herz durch dich genas,
Das von des Winters Schnee erkrankt,
O wie mein Herz nach dir verlangt! ~Erstes Grün, by Justinius Kerner (set to music by Robert Schumann)
Young green, fresh grass,
How many a heart you have healed
That fell ill from winter’s snow,
How great my heart’s desire for you! ~ translation by Richard Stokes

It feels fortuitous that Editor-In-Chief Michelyn Camen’s desire for a lavishly botanical collaboration with award-winning artisanal perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz happened to coincide with both Earth Day and ÇaFleureBon’s 14th anniversary. Appropriately named Green Queen, this aldehydic, verdant floral chypre yields all the pleasure of a vintage classic interwoven with fizzy modernity. Its vivacious sparkle revives the spirit and reminds each of us that spring follows on the heels of winter – always.

I may not merit the title Green Queen – but I’d wager good money that a substantial portion of my perfume collection consists of green fragrances, be they floral, chypre, woody, herbaceous, dry, moist, etc. My family didn’t refer to me as Nature Girl without ample reason: I spent all my free time outdoors, even when we lived in the city. If there was an available tree, I climbed it. When we moved upstate (where there were more Black Angus cattle than people!), I walked barefoot everywhere – even if my destination was quite a few miles away. I slept in the woods with the boys and awakened with twigs and leaves in my hair. I suppose that, if I had my way – I’d like to be that girl again. But since time tarries not with yesterday, the closest I might get would be Green Queen.

Dawn recently sent me a rollerball of Green Queen. Its first impression upon my skin was a brilliant explosion of mouthwatering citruses, leafy abundance, and an effervescent fruity aldehyde. As we are aware, citruses are fleeting, but we’re treated to a surfeit of variety here – each one contributing its own distinct voice while behaving as a chorale in tandem. Dawn’s choice of florals dovetails with those much loved by Michelyn, who has always been partial to orange blossom and jasmine sambac, as well as a judicious dash of patchouli and orris. And when it comes to aldehydes, many of Michelyn’s favorite perfumes back in the day shimmered with them; the kiss of cistus corresponds to her fondness for ambery fragrances. Chypres such as Paco Rabanne Calandre and Chanel’s Cristalle eau de toilette were amongst her go-to scents – both ebulliently elegant and sprinkled with oakmoss and vetiver. I posit that Dawn, Michelyn, and I harbored similar preferences – that’s why DSH Perfumes Green Queen is so satisfying to us, melding memory with the present in a charmed perfume which will stand the test of time. After all, beauty never seems to go out of style.
Green Queen will please anyone on any occasion; it’s that versatile and appealing. I can’t perceive any reason why it should be relegated to a specific season, even while it mirrors the delicious aspects of spring and summer. I don’t appreciate folks telling me what perfume I should wear, in which season or by whom; that is patently ridiculous, in my book. DSH Perfumes Green Queen for ÇaFleureBon blazons a sense of well-being and verdant grace – to which any individual is rightfully privy. I encourage you to sample it and see for yourself, because it is irresistible.
