DSH Perfumes Bacchanal (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) 2023 + Drunken Chypre Giveaway

DSH Perfumes Bacchanal

I’ve lost sleep staying up to watch Award Winning Dawn Spencer Hurwitz do her wonderful perfume sketching on Instagram lives. We’re in different time zones, but it’s always worth it as I’ve learned so much, albeit slightly abstractly as I don’t have access to all the materials she works with. So when she announced that she was releasing a limited edition “smell along box” for the creation of Bacchanal I jumped at the chance and ordered it as soon as it arrived on her Etsy store; that’s the store for those outside of America. 30 boxes where made, 15 with perfumers alcohol and 15 with IPM, it has a higher flash point so is safe to ship, its the same with her perfumes that come in voile rather than alcohol. The base notes tend to get more amplified with this carrier oil, so take that into account with my description later. I love her animalic creations so the more base the better.

Over four weeks we tuned in and sniffed materials along with Dawn as she created DSH Perfumes Bacchanal, a lush pastoral chypre. She’d explain her concept, process and how the materials were interacting with each other as she was blending. I’ve done some lectures via the Osmothèque with sniff along materials, but my French is how you say “merde”, I’ve also bought many other materials and a few perfumers have been generous enough to send me small amounts to explore, but some materials are hard to access, so these sprayable materials in the smell along box are amazing to have, especially for those who love oakmoss, as you get two versions to compare, the absolute and a synthetic version, Everlyn©, along one of Dawn’s own accords. Having the chance to smell materials in isolation is incredible, especially as they’re being described to you, having a perfume created in front of you, that’s a whole other experience, one that feels special. Bacchanal is of course stunning and it was on Michelyn’s top ten perfumes of 2023 and my Best in Scent List for 2023, I mean who doesn’t love an orgy?

DSH Perfumes Bacchanal

DSH Perfumes Bacchanal unfolds in a manner that befits its name, an all-indulging perfume opening like wine cascading down the creamy skin of another, consumed with unrestrained fervour out in the wilds of nature. It’s as if the grapes themselves are being plucked, peeled and squeezed, their aroma lingering in the air alongside the earthy green scent of vines and leaves. Creamy sandalwood notes are infused with a touch of tantalising green cassis spices, create a sinful yet enticing allure. Amidst the intoxicating blend, bergamot adds a refreshing touch, as a rich Armagnac accord emerges, with facets of crispness of green apples and succulent green figs, transforming Bacchanal into a decadent feast of boozy, luscious fruits. This is no ordinary revelry; it exudes a suave elegance, it’s a refined and creamy essence that conjures the sensation of cool, damp silk gliding softly against the skin. Bringing a touch of sophistication to the untamed and earthy sharpness of the green fruits; as the wine and Armagnac are savoured from the gently spiced crevices that eagerly embrace them.

Coumarin permeates the Bacchanal, taming the spices allowing them gracefully mellow and dry. Slowly more pleasure unfurls, revealing the intoxicating aroma of hay upon which this extravagant debauchery of fruits takes place. It is a delightful blend of sweet and dank earthy hay, soaked in the excess of wine and other intoxicating pleasures preformed on it. Bacchanal dances upon the skin, caressing it with a velvety green softness, as the spices now exude a powdery and aromatic allure. From the hay delicate florals unfurl, blossoming with grace and beauty. Jasmine lends a voluptuous and slightly intoxicating aroma, reminiscent to the scent of crushed velvet, seducing the senses with a playful indolic purr. Once again, it unveils a soft yet tantalising blend of intimate spices, as the cool and creamy flesh bathes in delicious wine-soaked hay. Gradually, the hay and oakmoss take centre stage, as the bodies slow their passionate movements. A dark and mossy dampness emanates from this exquisite combination, giving the fragrance a decadent and opulent chypre-like quality. Yet, amidst the wild abandon, this bacchanal retains an air of elegance, reminiscent of a black-tie affair that has ventured into the realm of untamed desires.

Bacchus Velasquez

The Triumph of Bacchus by Velasquez was an inspiration to Dawn when composing Bacchanal

For those who still mourn the loss of oakmoss-heavy perfumes, this one’s for you, especially in its dry down. Surprisingly, only a small amount of oakmoss is needed in the composition to transport you to a woodland floor, where the intensity is deeply felt. It’s enhanced by the presence of Evernyl©, which brings forth a cool, powdery, spiced green snow that blankets a cold forest floor. There’s a slight funk of seaweed, a salty mix, with the sweet decay of green leaves, adding an intensity to the forest floor of covered mosses and patchouli. Coumarin dries things up a bit more, with faint whispers of that deliciously dirty, drunken hay, evoking memories of wild Bacchanal fun. It’s as if spilled wine has moistened this moss, creating a cool, creamy drunken sandalwood chypre, as if every last drop has been savoured. There’s a purring hint of labdanum, giving a subtle nod to leather and fun. Bacchanal is an exquisite vintage chypre that exudes the opulence of oakmoss and the intoxicating allure of boozy revelries; it is the epitome of a refined yet wild elegance. More wine please!

This creation by DSH sounds absolutely wonderful. I’ve never experienced one of Dawn’s creations…yet. However, from what I’ve been reading about DSH this past year, I see one of her creations in my near future. J, thank you for your in-depth review of Bacchanal. Very descriptive and has almost brought this fragrance to life on my computer screen.

  • I love a mossy vintage-style chypre, so this one has certainly caught my attention. I’m keen to know how the “drunken sandalwood” plays with the forest notes. Sounds like a very interesting take on the classic profile. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • The way the article reads like an invitation to one of Dionysus’ parties! Sign me up with the smell of this beguiling perfume and a good time. Usa

I got a sample of this as soon as I saw it on the DSH site because I love Dawn’s use of classic chypre notes to create new takes on vintage vibes. After reading J’s review I can’t wait to smell it. A drunken sandalwood chypre… what’s not to love?! US

  • Wow! What a well written article that really helps to understand how this perfume transports you! The grape and wine accords are not usually done, so I find that very interesting. Of course, I’m a huge fan of oak moss and love how it’s used in vintage perfumes so it will be interesting to see how it’s used here, too. One of your recent articles showcasing DSH inspired me to take a look at her website and order a lot of samples. I’m very excited to get my nose on them! Ohio, USA

  • The greenness piques my interest. I’m curious about the oakmoss. Also, how the seaweed comes into play. NY State.

  • I’m a long-time fan of Dawn’s, and this sounds perfect for a vintage, oakmoss lover. J’s mentions of sandalwood, real oakmoss, and a wine note appeal to me. Creamy drunken sandalwood chypre is a great description too! I’m in the US.

  • I love classic chypres and was fascinated with the story of this one being created live and online. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • I am in the US. Dawn has a way of creating boozy fragrances that are bigger than the sum of their parts!!

  • Brian Cordova says:

This sounds like a scent journey like no other. I’m a big fan of fig, Notes, and perfumes and this sounds like an intoxicating adventure.

  • Oh i love the name here. The oakmoss note intrigues me as well as hay. Then armagnac! I live in the US

  • Bacchanal is So Good. J really captures the joy in it. I love how it evokes wine without being too sweet or fruity. It really feels elegant and classy but also with a bit of debauchery. I would love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I appreciate the use of oak moss in perfumery and had my share of the dominant oak moss heavy scents of the 80’s era so it’s nice to see it being utilized in this creation. Never heard of Evernyl and it was interesting to read about how it was used here to bring forth a spiced, cool, powdery green snow that blanketed a cold forest floor. Thank you. New York, USA.

  • Bacchanal seems aptly names with notes of wine, cognac, grapes and grape leaf. The fig and hay seem to provide some earthiness with dark and mossy oakmoss. I appreciate the imagery of spilled wine coating the hay strewn dirt floor. I’m in the US.

  • The boozy fruity orgy sounds amazing but with the inclusion of a marked Hay note, I’m drooling!

  • AromaDulce73 says:

This sounds like a very complex yet very intriguing fragrance. Fruity, sweet, dry, earthy and much much more. Not familiar with Chypre but would definitely like to try it out.

  • I am not surprised to see another beautiful review for a new DSH release; Dawn’s creations are always stunning. I am continually impressed by her. I have been interested in Bacchanal since its release and had planned to order a sample with my next order. As it’s a lush pastoral chypre, that’s all I needed to hear to want to try it! However, I always enjoy J’s reviews. J’s comments about the grape’s “aroma lingering in the air alongside the earthy green scent of vines and leaves” sound beautiful. The creamy sandalwood and green cassis seem like they balance out the other notes perfectly. Hay is one of my favorite notes of all time and I try any fragrance that contains it as a note, so the hay note sounds stunning. I am glad to read that the hay and oakmoss eventually take center stage. Bacchanal sounds like Dawn’s new masterpiece, but honestly, I feel that way about all of her fragrances. I would love the opportunity to own a bottle. Thank you, J, for the wonderful review, and thank you to DSH for the generous giveaway! I am located in the USA.

  • Wow! I am blown away by this description of Bacchanel, and what a concept too! I’ve never even imagined that anyone would think to make such a provocative and deeply lush perfume such as this but it 100% sounds like the makings of a beautiful sticky meadow fest of love and the hay and coumarin paired with the earthy and powdery nature of the oakmoss just sounds absolutely divine. Like sweetgrass and woods. Ugh, I can’t imagine how good this is. I can only dream! From Portland, OR.

  • In the middle of winter, I would love to smell the ocean, the smell of seaweed. I live in the US. Thank you!

  • Dawn seems to pay careful attention to the community aspect of the fragrance hobby, offering learning opportunities and interesting social media content about her work. The Bacchanal “smell along box” is particularly cool. So much thought went into this project, between the higher flash point for shipping compatibility, the instructional sessions, multiple versions of similar material for comparison, and the composition itself. I often have trouble identifying notes without some prodding from the perfumer and I think smelling notes in isolation (like the oakmoss and Everlyn© here) would be illuminating. I’m also intrigued by where this project ended up; Bacchanal captures the grape, fresh squeezed, but also the vine and leaves, while retaining a smooth, boozy charm. I also love a hay note given priority, especially in pastoral compositions that reference harvest time, and that bold oakmoss-heavy drydown sounds killer. Would love to try it. Excellent review, J!

I like how Dawn shared her knowledge of perfumery via her Instagram series. How fascinating that, over 4 weeks, we could see the creation of Bacchanal. I am very interested in trying this “pastoral chypre.” J’s review piqued my curiosity, especially regarding the wine and oak moss notes. This sounds like a very opulent fragrance,

  • Michael Prince says:

What piques my interest about Bacchanal based on J’s review is first how unique Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s creations are how talented she is as a perfumer. Bacchanal sounds like my kind of fragrance with boozy notes and earthy touches of Oakmoss, Hay, and Patchouli. It sounds really good. I am from the USA.

  • Oh I just love fig and oakmoss. Two of my favorite notes. I would love to try this as it sounds unique in the way it’s using grapes and booziness. And the florals and hay notes sound lovely!! Thank you for the chance. In California

Thanks for the wonderful review J.

This is such a cool fragrance to read about and more so because the reviewer got to witness the creation of the scent. That is the bacchanalian part more than anything else.

I really love how everything melds together – from the grapes, green spices, coumarin, hay and the beautiful chypre mix in the base of labdanum and oakmoss.

I would love to get me nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I am a big oakmoss fan. So seeing this and some patchuli mixed in there excites me. That visual of the forest floor covered in greens makes me excited to give this a smell. Then on top of that fig?! Count me in!!!

  • I have yet to try any from DSH, but this certainly seems the right place to start! Oakmoss, I adore. Salty forest floor voluptuous jasmine and wine-soaked hay … J’s entire review teems with descriptives that make me really excited to try this. I’d love to win your drawing! Either way, it’s going on my to-try list immediately. Many thanks for the chance 🙂 — I’m in the US
