“They deem me mad because I will not sell my days for gold; and I deem them mad because they think my days have a price”. ~ Khalil Gibran

It is no accident that the brilliant Lebanese-American polymath Khalil Gibran should spring to mind as I experience one of award-winning American perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’ more recent aromatic offerings, DSH Perfumes Aurum Incense {an all botanical incense perfume}. In my eyes, Dawn and Gibran share many facets – each one being an accomplished fine artist, philosopher-cum-poet, and profoundly spiritual human being. Aurum Incense is a wholly natural composition which embodies the Gilded Ineffable: radiant solace in a flacon which possesses the potential to heal the self on a grand scale.

During our conversation a week or so ago, Dawn spoke of feeling the need for frankincense more than ever. This is something with which many of us can identify: the holiday season can be quite stressful, its aftermath may require additional downtime, and we find ourselves ensconced in the bosom of winter – which often exacerbates seasonal affective disorder. I frequently refer to the fact that this is one of those times of year when souls succumb to illness and/or despair; it is fact, not mere observation. Any therapeutic adjuvant which doesn’t require a physician’s prescription is more than welcome – and one of the myriad skills in the perfumer’s wheelhouse is her expertise as aromatherapist. Who better to provide an olfactory panacea?

DSH Aurum Incense refers to the Latin name for gold, or golden: aurum. When one is a fine artist (as Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is), that single word may conjure several images. “For me, many of the frankincense materials I use vary between ‘greenish gold’ to ‘reddish gold’ in terms of synesthetic impressions… but always gold and shining in its feel. Until I started creating Aurum incense. As I worked on the perfume some new impressions began to emerge: a dark, inky smoke undertone that changed the colors from pure gold hues to golden light among ‘indigo’ smoke. Perhaps it’s the addition of the myrrh gum and labdanum; perhaps the opopanax and spices that had made the difference. Either way, Aurum Incense feels like this to me: Indigo blue and gold light-filled wisps of frankincense smoke lifting lifting our hopes and prayers to the celestial realm. A connection with the ancients. A beautiful way to be in the darkness but feel the presence of the light.”

Aurum Incense by DSH Perfumes is a 100 percent botanical fragrance

Dawn expresses herself so eloquently that it is challenging to even approach her threshold of description. As I happen to be musically hardwired, I experience DSH Perfumes Aurum Incense as a contrapuntal composition – one in which two or more independent but harmonically related melodic parts sound together, forming polyphony. In Aurum Incense’s case, color, texture, and sound span both ends of the color spectrum in their quest to summon the Divine in real time. We are awash in terpenes, each presenting itself a bit differently: cubeb, pink and green peppercorn, cardamom, frankincense, myrrh, opoponax, cedar, sandalwood, Siam wood, labdanum, and quite likely, choya ral. What purpose do these terpenes serve, given that Aurum Incense includes so many? Terpenes are naturally-occurring substances which endow powerfully-scented plants with their odor profile. According to recent studies from the National Institute of Health, terpenes have been shown to possess anticancer, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antihyperglycemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiparasitic qualities. In high concentrations, they might lead to hypotension and dizziness: like any compound, there can be too much of a good thing (cannabinoids, btw – are terpenic in nature). Besides the profound sense of well-being they foster, many benefits resemble those acquired by forest bathing, according to currently available medical research.

The gorgeous spice notes, accompanied by a celestial rose and jasmine – round out and embellish an already beautiful composition which heals from within, as well as without. Siam benzoin, by way of contrast – is somewhat phenolic, a characteristic which is responsible for imparting the delicate smokiness which enhances this meditative perfume. It truly feels as if Dawn has accessed natural materials which do as much good as they smell – and I cannot argue, because the transcendence one experiences lifts the veil between the two worlds as we know them. Not only will the wearer reap all these benefits, but those within one’s personal space will, as well. I can’t think of a finer way to ring in the new year.

Notes: bergamot, pink peppercorn, green peppercorn, cubeb, cardamom seed, spice notes, Bulgarian rose absolute, grandiflorum jasmine, and frankincense co2 absolute (both Boswellia Carterii from Yemen and Boswellia  Serrata from India, amongst others), myrrh gum, opoponax, choya ral, labdanum, Atlas cedarwood, Himalayan cedar, Siam benzoin, Siam wood, Australian sandalwood

  • What a wonderful review! Ida’s writing much like the scent described brings about such wonderful brain stimulation, weird as that may sound. DSH’s own description for the scent is what piqued my interest in that it has somewhat a glimpse of what someone with synesthesia would experience smelling Aurum Incense. Either meditating what notes one can make out from smelling this scent or just letting the scent bring one to places in spirit and mind, this is one thing i’d definitely would want to try. From Portland OR

  • Ahh, frankincense! I’ve burned frankincense since my teens, and collect various varieties of the resin. I have spent many years searching for the perfect frankincense perfume. Her mention of greenish gold brings to mean by beloved royal Hojari incense. The fact that there’s also rose, sandalwood and benzoin is just amazing!

  • The description of the indigo and gold instantly made me think of Lapis Lazuli, one of my favorite stones, and the mystical properties of that combined with a healing incense sounds like an awesome melding. Plus DSH does the most amazing things with her blends.

  • This new perfume really piques my interest for a few reasons. First of all, I’ve visited Dawn’s studio and have been enchanted by all that she does. I’ve been looking for an incense-centered perfume for a little while and based on Ida’s review, including that touch of rose to round it off, makes me want to try this out! I’m the U.S.

  • Frankincense does something to me—a centering vibration, and I loved the quote from Dawn about feeling the light regardless of being in the dark. It is the spark of hope, the prayer lifted in despair. Would love to smell this, with the extra terpenes and also the spice. She deftly handles so many materials. We all need some frankincense in Jam!

This sounds sooo good. Frankincense is a note I’ve been wanting to dive more into, especially since smelling the Amouage late 22 collection. I love that she has created a fragrance that is therapeutic in nature as well.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Wow! This fragrance sounds real interesting. I love incense, been burning them for years. What peaked my interest is that this fragrance is a wholly natural. The notes sound amazing and I would love to get my nose on this one.

  • What a lovely review, Dawn’s inspiration for this perfume is a timely reminder to me. This statement of Ida brought my attention front and center “because the transcendence one experiences lifts the veil between the two worlds as we know them. Not only will the wearer reap all these benefits, but those within one’s personal space will, as well.”

  • This perfume sounds wonderful! I’m a big fan of frankincense, benzoin, and rose in perfumes. I also really like how many naturals are in the perfume. I think the current state of perfumery relies too heavily on synthetic molecules. Describing the winter blues in this article (which I no doubt have right now) and how this perfumer is an aromatherapist, really makes me want to try this perfume! Well written article! Thanks for the opportunity!

This seems like an amazing spicy scent. I love the richness of frankincense. I’m in the US.

  • The notes and composition of Aurum Incense sound absolutely stunning to me. I particularly am interested in the celestial description as well as the spiciness which creates a sort of healing aura. I live in CT, US.

  • So happy to see another of DSH Perfumes’ all natural perfumes highlighted! Dawn expressing Aurum Incense as a “…way to be in the darkness but feel the presence of the light” really speaks to me this time of year. We’re emerging from the darkest days of the year, into the snowy white of the new year, but things move slowly. As they should. It’s a good time of year to connect with the roots but also look forward – a theme Michelyn touches upon with the idea of polyphony! Two worlds, two impulses, culminating into something more than the sum of its parts. I would love to try Aurum Incense and experience this beautiful meditative perfume! Best wishes from the US!

  • I’ve already commented for the giveaway but I just realized that this is the same perfumer who made Il Marinaio da Capri, which makes me even more excited to try this perfume. That is such a wonderful summer scent, that I really love. I’m super excited to delve more into this house now after this article.

  • Lisa Collins says:

I adore these three in nearly any offering…cardamom, frankincense, myrrh, but the idea of them as smoke up to the heavens makes me want to get this fragrance.

  • I am such a crazy sucker for incense and incense perfumery. Dawn’s name attached to an incense scent alone is enough to pique my interest, but I can completely feel what is being said about needing frankincense right now. I feel like I’ve been sick all winter long between surgery and managing to catch a cold! Those soft moments of meditative hush are few and far between, but catch a moment of a scent and one can absolutely be transported to that quiet. Aurum Incense sounds incredible. I’m located in the US.

  • Excellent review! This was my favorite part.
Thank you for the very generous giveaway, I live in the USA.

  • The blue and gold incense image is beautiful and i look forward to trying Dawn new color of incense. I am ready for a meditative scent. Those base notes sound gorgeous. I would lo e to sample this new scent. I live in the US

  • Incense wrapped in a swirl of blue and gold is a lovely inspiration for a fragrance. Autumn Incense is all the more notable because it’s composed from all botanical sources, The spice notes with the florals and the frankincense blended with myrrh and labdanum giving a gold to smoky indigo impression sounds celestial. Ida, I appreciate the primer on terpenes! I’m in the US.

This new perfume really piques my interest for a few reasons. I’ve been looking for an incense-centered perfume for a little while and based on Ida’s review, including that touch of rose to round it off, makes me want to try this out! From PA, USA

  • Dawn is such a miricle worker when it comes to incense. Curious to see how it plays out in this fragrance
    I am in the US

  • I love all these notes – almost a classic Chypre but with a deeper balsamic quality… talking my love language!! And DSH has been a favorite house. You also got me with the Khalil Gibran, I went to his museum up in the cedars of Lebanon in Becharre and a I strongly urger everyone to go. His paintings are as amazing as his poetry and it houses most of them. Back to Aurum Incense perfume. I would Love love love some!! Thank you for the chance. In California.

  • Dawn’s observations about frankincense are really interesting: usually golden, but mixed with inky, indigo smoke in Aurum Incense. This fragrance is an compelling combination of strong terpenes and natural spice materials, along with the resinous notes used to add dark contrast to the core frankincense. I love the idea of fragrance as medicine for the mood and wearable solace, and incense fragrances are perfect for that purpose, so Ida’s review makes me want to try Aurum Incense soon and pull out my sample of Axis Mundi.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Not familiar with Mr. Khalil, but I love his quote. Love the paragraph about Dawn’s need for Frankincense, even the color of the resin is soft and calming. I had not heard of terpenes before. As usual, too much a good thing isn’t a good thing any longer. Those notes sound amazing. I’d love to win this. Thanks to Dawn for her always nice giveaways. USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I didn’t know that frankincense was a terpene. I do know that when i burn frankincense, I feel a remarkable sense of wellbeing. My stress disappears and I feel at peace. Actually, I get this feeling when I wear any creation from Dawn. I am in awe of all the gorgeous notes in Aurum. This is a fragrance that the world needs now.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for such a detailed writeup Ida. It was so neat to see the way DSH described the fragrance in colors and you described it as a composition.

DSH has created a fascinating movement in an incense fragrance, using the citrus and spice to highlight the lemony spicy qualities of a good frankinsence. The touch of rose and jasmine makes this sound like a divinely rounded out fragrance, with a nice olfactive scape.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Regis Monkton says:

I love incense, and I’d like to try something from DSH Perfumes. I appreciate the insight into perfumery from Ida’s review. I’m always interested in the list of notes for DSH fragrances. In “Aurum Incense”, I’d like to see what the combination of spices and florals is like. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • This sounds so lovely — I would love to enter for the draw! Aurum, for me too, is such an evocative word — I go to aura, auricle, aurora. The notes sound beautiful as does the accompaniment of rose & jasmine, which I love. I definitely want to try this ! From MA, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ida’s review of Aurum Incense! I am a huge fan of resinous notes in perfumery especially incense…both are featured in this rich fragrance that is full of complexity and depth. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes always comes up with creative masterpiece’s and the way Ida describes this in perfect detail it sounds like more of the same. I am from the USA.
