Der Duft Privilege (Nathalie Feisthauer) 2022 + Natural High Giveaway

Der Duft Privilege

 Der Duft Privilege by Karl

“My personal interpretation of the term “privilege” is that it is a privilege for me, to have water, nature, greenery, woods, and the sea available to me. In other words, having nature around me is the ultimate privilege. Privilege has become my tribute to the natural elements!” Nathalie Feisthauer.

Nathalie Feisthauer perfumer

Der Duft (The Scent) founded by Anselm Skogstad is a brand with a simple but effective mission; to bring scent and association together via the medium of perfumery. Each fragrance is produced to evoke one specific idea translated clearly. In the case of his latest collaboration with Master Perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer (Lab Scent) that name is ‘Privilege.’ The word as a noun comes with certain connotations, of particular benefit or advantage even favour. However, in this case it has been interpreted as a verb to accord a higher value as a tribute to our natural earthly environment, thus stripping away any haughty superiority or dominion.

Privilege here is accessible to all and our natural given right to engage with the elements. Whilst the presentation may be paired back a straightforward (transparent glass flacon with embossed block print and white background) the composition is most certainly far from it. Here is where one can develop that personal link and adoration for a superbly constructed scent.

Der Duft Privilege

Finding Nature @Michelyn NYC

As John Burroughs eloquently put it, “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” Considering we are currently heralding in a New Year, Privilege seems to me to be the perfect perfume to  embrace the present as now is a time to reset and explore not only our environment but ourselves. Taking in each new season, to breathe in the air, taste the fruit and explore the earth. Privilege subtly emanates such change whilst also invigorating the senses in what is a harmonious and thoroughly modern creation.

Der Duft Privilege opens bright with a fusion of fruits, blackcurrant and rhubarb being particularly prevalent whilst galbanum adds a fresh blast of greenery. Underneath is a soft carrot seed and incredible sea air experience coming from mineral and marine notes. In concert the overall feel is difficult to pin down as one is taken to piney forestry, tropical scenes and the explosion of frothy sea and breeze. Quite the achievement! Soft and fresh floral elements come through via lily of the valley and blend beautifully with a slightly creamy iris. Underpinning these are balsamic facets of Haitian amyris and cedarwood. The magic of Der Duft Privilege lies in its depth and here Madame Feisthauer has used Paraguayan guaiac wood, Palo Santo Ambroxan, Cashmeran, Ambrette and Synthetic musk and these notes envelop and soothe.

Der Duft Privilege is a standout composition which not only delivers in terms of artistry, but also has a distinctive likeability and performs excellently. Fresh, watery, with woods and muskiness this is a versatile and magnificently created fragrance that will hopefully gain popularity throughout 2023.

Notes: Vegetal notes, Galbanum, Carrot seed, Blackcurrant, Rhubarb, Marine notes, Mineral notes, Lily of the valley, Iris, Cedarwood, Paraguayan Guaiac wood, Palo Santo, Haitian amyris, Ambroxan, Cashmeran, Ambrette, Musk.

  • Der Duft Privilege sounds like a joyful ode to nature. The fruits and greens, minerals and marine notes and florals and woods seem perfectly blended to approximate a beautiful forest setting. It seems like a fragrance that would put a smile on the face of the wearer and those lucky enough to experience it. MD, USA.

  • Ooh I keep reading about this house and I’m so intrigued. Reading about Grasse was just beautiful and now this one with the Haitian Amyris (a note I loveee) and the fruits, mineral, smoky woods and vegetal opening…how can one not be ultra curious??

  • I am intrigued by Privilege and still have a hard time wrapping my mind around it, even after reading this excellent description. It is a fragrance that I desperately want to try because multiple people have praised the perfume. I want to know what a forest mixed with the tropics and the sea smells like. ~Indiana

  • Really easily understandable description and makes me want it even more after reader the top fragrances blog prior. The notes, especially rhubarb sound very unique and different. From US TX.

  • Def Duft Privilege opens bright with a fusion of fruits, blackcurrant and rhubarb

I presume you mean the leaves, because cassis is also a fruit?
Karl Topham transported me to not to Germany , but to Nihi Sumba Island in Indonesia. I saw myself in one of villa’s on top of the seashore, and the aroma of the sea , and the lush vegetation behind me are mixing in one aroma . Some Rhubarb cassis Margaritas would be nice additions to the wole tranquility picture.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • I remember seeing Der Duft Privilege listed on the top 10 recently of 2022.

The fresh aspect of the fragrance, makes me think immediately and takes me to Spring (still winter in Massachusetts).

  • What was appealing to me was reading the reviewer’s words, “Der Duft Privilege is a standout composition which not only delivers in terms of artistry, but also has a distinctive likability and performs excellently”. US

  • Karl’s review from one point reminded me about privilege of having nature around us. In my childhood, growing up near the sea shore and woods has always been a natural thing to me without putting too much thinking in it, but now as a grown-up the nature feels different, very precious. The notes of the fragrance sound fantastic and promising, blackcurrant and greens – it is a wonderful combo.
    I live in Lithuania, EU.

  • Der Duft is a brand I have wanted to get into for a long time, and what better opportunity than with this giveaway? I enjoy the idea of Nathalie incorporating the sea, forest, nature as a whole, really, into this fragrance. It sounds divine, and something I for sure want to get my hands on.

    I live in Sweden/EU.

  • Privilege caught my attention already in the editors’ “best of the year” tops a few days ago, and I am happy it was now given a whole article dedicated to describing it. It truly sounds like a unique perfume: fruity, marine, floral, woody. It truly seems to aim to carry the wearer through the different kinds of “privilege” nature has to offer.
    I live in the EU.

  • I really enjoyed Karl’s review of this fragrance. The feeling of walking through a piney forest, then coming to a tropical forest and last but not least standing by the frothy sea, it’s breeze gently caressing your smiling face, is what I took from this article, and it certainly piqued my interest.

  • “Def Duft Privilege opens bright with a fusion of fruits, blackcurrant and rhubarb being particularly prevalent whilst galbanum adds a fresh blast of greenery. Underneath is a soft carrot seed and incredible sea air experience coming from mineral and marine notes.” Karl’s description of Privilege was really well-written and it made me curious to try this out. If I do not win the bottle I am going to sample this, for sure.

    I reside in Sweden/EU.

  • Those notes sound really interesting, and I like how multifaceted the perfume is. Nathalie Feisthauer is an amazing perfumer, and I bet this is another one of her masterpieces. I really hope I can win this and try it out.

    I live in the EU.

  • Nathalie is one of my favorite nose! Never tried this brand since ia not distributed in Italy, but I’m super curious. It contains iris and carrots seed and I quite like that combination in fragrances.

  • Looking forward to this fragrance! I hope I get to test some from this house soon. Privilege sounds like a perfect companion for the spring that will arrive in a couple of months. Please count me in!
    Thanks!

A beautiful description by the perfumer has piqued my interest the notes sound amazing this sounds like an amazing fragrance. A house that I have got no experience with I am afraid. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Looks like quite an interesting fragrance being green, tropical and watery at the same time. Would love to try this.

  • I like the idea of the forest and the sea. That’s how I grew up and still live in between both. I’m either hiking in the woods or walking at the beach.

  • carlos_lager says:

Thank you for the lovely review. I have heard about the brand a lot recently, but didn’t have the chance to try any of their fragrances yet. I really liked what you said about the general feeling of this fragrance. Being hard to pinpoint and somewhere between a forest, tropical and a sea breeze. Sounds really interesting.
    Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • Any perfume description mentioning the sea has my interest. Love the way Karl described it. I live in the EU.

  • Der Duft Privilege seems to evoke the smells of a forest right by the sea, so one may enjoy two different kinds of nature, forests or the beach, or a single kind, walking in a forest by the beach. From Karl’s review it seems to be a relaxing perfume. I like that Der Duft Privilege won a number of awards last year. I like the notes in this perfume. Unfortunately I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

  • I think bringing scent to a memory is great I have quiet a few fragrances that bring back memories iris all ways brings back memories to me plus that notes along with carrot seed smells so good

  • Really nice description by Karl of a brand an a perfume !Anselm Skogstad wishes each fragrance in Der Duft is produced to evoke one specific idea: here the great Nathalie Feisthauer (who last year gave us some masterpieces (Cow and the current Privilege) wants to highlight the joy of living in nature and perhaps also as a notice of fragility and the need to preserve it. So she created a fresh, watery/aquatic, woody and musky scent: earth and its fruits, air and sea in a bottle. She uses mineral and marine notes to recreate the breeze, a truly sea air experience plus the juicy fruity green, the flowers, balsam and woods. Amazing what you can accomplish in a small bottle of pure joy: The privilege is to wear it! I live in Spain, EU.

  • “Der Duft Privilege opens bright with a fusion of fruits, blackcurrant and rhubarb being particularly prevalent”

You got me confused a bit, fruits….and blackcurrant ?!?
I prefer to use cassis, instead of blackcurrant, but my point is , the round black (there are other colors, white, yellow, and burgundy) eligible tart berries are …. 100% fruits. True berries like we say in the culinary world.
Do you mean the berries, the leaves, the shrubs, or maybe something in between?
Since I relate all fragrances to some sort of food, Karl Topham review of Der Duft Privilege made me think of making Rhubarb Cake with Crème Fraîche and Cassis , and later on sharing it with friends while on a picnic in the woods .
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Just love the quotes on nature. Funny what society sees as “privilege”. “I go to nature to be soothed and healed…….” is really hitting my heart. I went through a period of loving incense during the covid pandemic, now I feel like I am taking a shift towards more nature/outdoors fragrances. I think I’ll go for a walk in the woods this weekend. Thanks for the perspective and the chance to win this fragrance. USA, on the edge of the Columbia Gorge Scenic Area.

  • RHUBARB: what fun!
I appreciate this interpretation of privilege. How often I take nature for granted, and how glad I am of reminders to take pleasure in it.
The notes here sound really lovely, too. Rhubarb and carrot seed??? I want to smell!
    WV, USA

  • You had me at Sea Air. It’s a note I am forever searching for in perfume and have yet to find in a pure form. The addition of forests makes this sound like home to me. I live in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where trees and the sea meet.

  • Der Duft Privilege caught my attention in at least one of this year’s best of lists. I love the idea of a fragrance paying tribute to nature more broadly, especially when framed as a privilege. Karl pointed out that Anselm Skogstad managed to capture evergreen forest, tropics, sea breeze, and soft florals all in one fragrance; impressive blending, but I’m also intrigued about how that combination progresses through a wear. I’d love to try this one. Thanks for the review, Karl.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of this house before it was mentioned here.
This review of the scent makes me miss the island vacation I have never had.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Although I like the smell of surrounding nature (esp when hiking), I never get to experience all the elements at once. Privilege, apart from the appeal of being a tribute to nature, has very appealing notes to me – only mentioning the frothy sea, mmmmm :), makes me ‘drool’.
It’s interesting that, probably, the majority of the readers were in for a surprise when learning about what sort of privilege Der Duft created for perfume lovers.
    I’m living in EU.

  • Never tried any Der Duft perfume yet, but Privilege seems to be a versatile and standout composition. Karl is really heaping praise on this fragrance and I will love to try it out. The combination of notes like paraguayan guaiac wood, palo santo, ambroxan, marine notes, etc. “versatile and magnificently created fragrance”.
    Maryland, US

  • Karl marvels at depicting fragrances in words. The aura of nature, wonderful composition, and thought–evoking interpretation of privilege are the most appealing characteristic of the fragrance based on Karl’s review. I appreciate Anselm Skogstad’s pursuit of choosing perfumers and creating fragrances by interpreting abstract concepts.
Thank you for a generous giveaway!
    Greetings from Slovenia.

  • You got me at ‘Soft and fresh floral elements come through via lily of the valley and blend beautifully with a slightly creamy iris.’
I love lily of the valley and iris, so I think that Privilege would make for a great spring, kind of warmer weather fragrance.
Thanks for the giveaway and for the nice review! Europe

  • Like i said in Top 10 articles, under Rachel and Karl Best of 2022 , I’m happy for Anselm Skogstad success.
Working with different, from young to established perfumers helps Der Duft. In Privilege I like the relaxing feel , and the contrast between the fruity , marine and the conifer notes.
I already follow Cafleurebon, Karl and Nathalie Feisthauer, and of course I follow @der_durt , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very interested in trying this one because of its list of notes. Karl made this one seem very appealing to me and I hope to try it. I like the sound of the fruitiness as it combines with the galbanum. I’m also intrigued when Karl describes it as: “Underneath is a soft carrot seed and incredible sea air experience coming from mineral and marine notes. In concert the overall feel is difficult to pin down as one is taken to piney forestry, tropical scenes and the explosion of frothy sea and breeze.” I like when certain fragrance reviewers and/or perfumers talk about the use of raw materials such as lily-of-the-valley, and this fragrance seems to have that. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Of all the 2022 fragrance launches, this is the one that grabs my attention the most. I loved its notes and really like Karl’s description, I want to take the same aroma trip. Thank you. Kind regards from Mexico!

  • I really enjoyed Karl’s description here and on his top 10 article.
I loved the way Karl described it – abstract nature. it sounds like Natalie managed to get on the inner essence ie to the abstract form from the material of nature to a deeper level of seeing and understanding nature with her heart and it sounds amazing. It would be a huge privilege to experience this feeling. Israel

  • IvanVelikov says:

Now we’re talking, DER DUFT Privilege is my kind of fragrance. I’m particularly interested in the piney forestry, tropical scenes and the explosion of frothy sea and breeze , and the cedarwood backbone of te fragranse
Thank you Karl Topham, and Anselm Skogstad

  • Fragrances like Der Duft Privilege I’d like to wear when I’d like to be alone, sitting on the porch with a book . The tranquility feeling of Privilege is the most appealing aspect of the fragrance.
    Nice giveaway, USA

  • Phillip_Barkley says:

    Greetings everyone
Mr Topham made me think of two things I’d like to do , drink Blackcurrant and rhubarb tea , and the sense of being in Paris, yet into the woods. If anyone wants to get a taste of the countryside in the middle of Paris, head for the Bois de Vincennes to the east of the City. Great place to walk through nature between lakes and greenery, and drink tea.
The Lac Daumesnil in the Bois de Vincennes has a perimeter of about 2 kilometers , and it’s a sight to see, if you want to clear your mind of stress at home ,or work.
Small recommendation to Mr Skogstad , for old-school people like me , it would be great , if in the near future your fragrances are available in a boutique ,somewhere in Paris. I much prefer to visit a local boutique, and to try and buy fragrances on sight, sampling and online shopping ,both are not things I like to do.
Thank you, American living in Paris France

  • sephrenia300 says:

Nice review Karl! What appeals to me about Karl’s review is his description of how rhubarb is a prominent note adding both a greenness and a fruitiness. I have rarely seen rhubarb listed as a fragrance note so that makes me very interested and intrigued to try it. I live in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Karl’s review of Master Perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer’s creation Der Duft Privilege which means Natural Earthy Environment. I love how Karl describes Der Duft Privilege being so fresh, green, herbal, earthy, ozonic, and musky. This sounds so pure and natural. I would love to win this beautiful fragrance. I am from the USA.

Thanks for the review Karl. I enjoyed how this fragrance conveys the connections between all the realms on this earth that we exist in.

  • DER DUFT means “The scent/smell” in German .
I’ve smelled the currently available DER DUFT fragrances in Germany, at the time the house was not available in US.
The fizzy, fruity-floral “Bubble” i bought, there’s a nice fizzy champagne accord , and like Privilege there’s black current too , and I’m curious about the parallel between Bubble and and Privilege.
More woody and marine , still related maybe?
    Thanks for the draw
