DER DUFT ACT Review (Prin Lomros) 2021 + Citrus Roulette draw

DER DUFT Act review

DER DUFT ACT (photographed by Cristian)

When it comes to deciding whether or not I love a fragrance, for reasons other than the essential answer to the question “Does it smell good?”, I pay close attention to the part of my mind that loves quality storytelling. Early on in my foray into the world of perfume, I noticed several habits I was developing involuntarily. Among these is the almost instinctual reaction of closing my eyes as I inhale as deeply as possible the scent I am trying to make sense of. And when I close my eyes, things get exciting! Images, sounds, music, colours, textures flash before my closed eyes, as if I were searching for the correct translation of that fragrance. Not unlike a slot machine of sorts landing on the perfect combination. And slowly, a story starts to reveal itself, woven by lived or borrowed experiences, extremely personal or shared ones.

art inspired perfumes

The Dream, painting by Henri Rousseau

I described DER DUFT ACT as “citrus taxidermy”: it is animalic yet approachable, ferocious but somewhat harmless. Composed by Art and Olfaction 2 x Finalist (2017 and 2018) Prin Lomros, whose other creations caught me by surprise on several other occasions, DER DUFT ACT is a slightly dirty citrus scent, invigorating and just a touch “obscene”. And by that, I mean that the lime and the bitter orange are married with a generous amount of ambergris, musk and tobacco to present a fragrance that is succulent and mouth-watering while also bestial and offering up the perfect amount of funk. The vetiver and moss give it a cool, earthy backbone and they expand the harmonious kaleidoscopic olfactory landscape of this fragrance.

ACT by DER DUFT (prin Lomros)

It has an exuberant opening, a lime that makes your mouth “weep”. It is green and vibrant, with some elusive floral notes. DER DUFT ACT smells like a perfectly clean and crisp shirt that you decide to put on after a long day’s work in the sun but before having a shower. Once the vegetal notes diminish in their vigor, the animalic makes the skin its territory. The exhilarating part of the storytelling starts here: in a citrus orchard at the time of harvest.  Perched on a stepladder, a farmer in his late 40s is arduously picking fruit. He is rugged and burly. His hands have seen better days and his clothes are what you would call “work clothes”: stained, missing some buttons and ripped here and there. He is definitely a heavy smoker and his angular jaw is covered with a few days’ old stubble. You walk past him and you stop. A mix of citrus peel, tobacco and sweat take you aback. You  want toin grab his hands, bring them cupped to your nose and take the deepest breath in that you ever took! Hard working, cigarette stained hands imbued with bitter orange oil and a few drops of sweat. That’s what this fragrance smells like to me!

Icarus in Midair for DER DUFT Act

DER DUFT ACT crane by Cristian

I included DER DUFT ACT in my ‘Olfactory Peregrinations’ collection and created one of my signature paper pieces directly inspired by it. I tried to translate it and to convey the story that it tells. By using a gradient of greens to yellows to browns, the intention was to reflect the evolution of the fragrance of skin. And circling back to gambling, I envisaged DER DUFT ACT as a round composition, mirroring a spinning Roulette wheel where the colours appear to be merging with one another and thus highlighting the exquisite blending of notes. Despite it being a citrus fragrance, I believe that DER DUFT ACT is not just a summer fragrance and that it would be a worthy companion no matter the weather.

Notes: Lime, Bitter Orange, Star Fruit, Vetiver, Ambergris, Cypress, Musk, Tobacco, Moss and Lavender

Disclosure: I purchased my own bottle and opinions are my own

  • Wow, that was a great story you found in this scent! It sounds silly but someplace like Sephora would be wonderful as it can be hard to get great fragrances in some parts of the USA. That being said, I’m in the USA.

  • Welcome Cristian! I love your photos with the review and the colour scheme of green, yellow and orange. It is interesting to think fragrance in colour. I am intrigued by this fragrance as I love how Prin Lomros uses animalic notes. I’m not quite sure if I have ever come across an animalic citrus, so this sounds interesting. My favourite from der Duft is Pride and would love to try this too. Marit UK

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoyed the detail of the rugged farmer that smokes and picks fruit, and leaves a compelling aroma that tempts you to grab his hand a take a deep whiff of the aroma. This one sounds interesting, and I do tend to like tobacco fragrances. I live in Maryland USA.

  • That’s interesting,a citrus fragrance with an earthy backbone emerging trough ambergris , musk and tobacco,Cristian’s review is quite sensorial and cinematic and his olfactory cranes beautiful! From Romania with love!

  • Describing Act as a citrus taxidermy makes it seem like this is quite an intense citrusy creation that will please citrus lovers. I am in USA. I think Lucky Scent would be a good choice as they will provide the broadest exposure.

  • I’m drawn to the duality of this fragrance, which seems to blend clean and earthy facets. The description of the lime note was especially compelling! It would be great to see Indigo or The Scent Room carry Der Duft one day. Welcome Cristian! I am in the USA.

  • Act sounds like a delightful unisex fragrance. I like the idea of a animalic scent. I do enjoy Prin Lomros fragrances. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Cristian’s review so vividly describes this fragrance. A “citrus taxidermy” is such an intense description that makes me think it will have both bright and dark aspects to the scent. I am based in the US, it would be great if a vendor such as Lucky Scent would carry Der Duft since they ship nationwide– that would give everyone in the lower 48 states a chance at experiencing the house.

  • I am glad someone else out here creates a whole narrative in their head for certain fragrances! I’ve caught myself doing this several times
This sounds like a fragrance my father would absolutely love.
Love from Cleveland, OH in the USA

  • KMBfragrance says:

A dirty citrus sounds great. An interesting concept to marry an ingredient that’s near synonymous with “fresh and clean” with animalic facets. I live in the US and would vote for Luckyscent or Twisted Lily.

  • Amazing review, so many textures and colors. I’d love to see this house in any department store or lux ecommerce. I live in Connecticut USA.

  • The fact that it makes your mouth “weep” was enough for me, the exuberant opening really peaked my interest. I would like to see Lucky Scent carry this. Indiana USA

  • welcome cristian! and what a lovely words and collage inspired by prin’s “act” — which of course i would love to smell (juicy skank? be still my heart …)

    ~harper (usa)

  • Wow, this sounds really interesting! I love a citrus, fruity scent, but mixing it with something dirty and animalistic sounds intriguing and a little scary. I’m so curious! I love the bottle and I’d love to see it in a store one day so I can sniff them all. I’m in NYC, so I’d love to see it at Scent Bar!

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love the visual of a dirty citrus farmer coming back from working all day in the fields, smoker and sweaty. I can picture the type of scent this must be and I’m completely intrigued. A dirty citrus, hmmmmm. I’d love to see this brand at Indigo perfumery here in the States, Anne is amazing. Thank you for the draw. US.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

An animalic citrus with powdery floral beauty this sounds interesting. I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • Cristian’s review was intriguing, particularly to think about ‘citrus’ and ‘dirty’ in the same bottle — my very short venture in the perfume world shows mostly ‘clean’ ‘fresh’ associated with ‘citrus’, so I’m all ears (nose?) to explore the citrus note in a new way!

Also: star fruit! Just had huge batches of harvest yesterday, so I’m extra pumped to experience its unique scent together with tobacco, moss, animalic, and perfumery goodies 😀 (Why am I sad to not see wedges of star fruits in any of the pics? But indeed they can be tricky to get your hands on!)

I’m based in Thailand! One of the very few places to carry imported perfume would be the airport duty-free (King Power), so, hmm, how about that one as the boutique?

  • The comparison of the farmer’s hands with the smell of Act made me smile, I loved the story and I would love to have the opportunity to try it out and be transported to a story like Cristian’s.
I am very struck by the carambola note in combination with the animalic notes, which surely make this fragrance an erotic and artistic “akt”.
    Welcome to ÇaFleureBon Cristian!
    Regards from Mexico.

  • Having sampled Lombros’ creations, I think that ACT may be a very interesting fragrance, even if the dirty-citrus combo has been done in the past. I have to say that I enjoyed the “smell of a citrus farmer’s hands” metaphor. Greetings from Greece.

  • Sexiness, taxidermy, fruit, tobacco… you got me. Sounds remarkably different from most fragrances with which I’m familiar. I agree with another commenter who said it would be nice if some store like Sephora carried this brand. I’d also be glad to find it at Luckyscent, Olfactif, or Ulta. (SoCal, USA)

  • Welcome Cristian what a great review to begin with! I absolutely love Prin Lomros and this sounds like a great perfume!! The exact scent that would fit this time of the year and will accompany us into warmer days and hopefully out of COVID! Living in the EU

  • Great story, great photos, great paper art! Welcome, Cristian!

    I like in The Netherlands.

Hard working, cigarette stained hands imbued with bitter orange oil and a few drops of sweat. That’s what this fragrance smells like to me! A vivid and a wonderful description by Christian has got me intrigued especially Bitter orange, vetiver and musk. It would be great if Luckyscent carried this house. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Thanks Cristian for this review. You describe this scent so vividly thanks to explaining us the quality storytelling the perfume tells you. A “citrus taxidermy” is a great description that makes me think about blending the clean and earthy facets of it, thanks to the image of the rugged and smoker farmer picking citrus in a farm (the skin of the citrus and the farmer could explain the taxidermy). A great thing is that Christian didn´t envision the scent just fort summer pleasure as citrus one usually does, but a companion for all seasons. I live in Spain, EU.

  • DER DUFT ACT is a slightly dirty citrus scent, invigorating and just a touch “obscene”. A beautiful description by Christian I am by the bitter orange, lime, musk, ambergris and vetiver. A house that I am not familiar with I am afraid. I would love Saks to carry this house. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I love citrus fragrances, but I find them boring and stale most of the time, but reading the review (and knowing who Prin Lomros is as a perfumer), I am absolutely certain that this is something else entirely! I would love to get a bottle. I live in Croatia, EU.

  • An obscene, dirty citrus certainly catches my interest. The variety of citrus (plus starfruit!) in combination with tobacco, vetiver and other earthy notes sounds like a summer fragrance with some heft to it. Since I get most of my samples from luckyscent, I would love to see der Duft there. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • This seems like a very different take on a citrus fragrance. I usually associate them with a cleaner scent, so this ‘dirty citrus’ sounds very intriguing. It would be nice if Indigo would carry Der Duft. It seems like it could be a good fit. I live in the USA.

  • From Christian’s description, I was attracted by the moment when he describes how the tobacco notes interfere with the citrus one, in the sunset atmosphere of a hot summer day when the land gives us, in dry down all that mentioned scent… I’m curious about the star fruit notes…my favourite from that house is Grasse. Well done, Christian! thx for the draw and the paper birds are fantastic!…regards from RO

  • Hello from Canada 🙂
What made me interested from Cristian’s review was the depiction of citrus during harvest time, and who wouldn’t be interested when there is a lime that can make your mouth “weep!” Wow!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Everything I hear about this house really piques my interest. Orange, amber, musk, and tobacco sounds like such a great combo. I’m also loving your crane! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Welcome Cristian!

Der Duft is difficult to come by here in Canada, but I have heard some fantastic things about this brand! I would like to see Indiescents carry it. Nice citrus and deeper musk and tobacco notes sounds wonderful. The review did a great job at capturing my imagination. Thanks from Canada.

  • Beautiful review !!
“smells like a perfectly clean and crisp shirt ” – sounds very suitable for this warm days!!
I love citruses with moss and woods.

  • Thank you, Cristian for this exciting review. You have created a fascinated 3-D portrait with the DER DUFT ACT notes. This beautiful portrait is not static, but it pulses with life in a fantastic way. Generally, I’m obsessed with Tobacco notes and I consider it as the optimizer that gives richness and deepness in many fragrances. As you mentioned, cigarette stained hands imbued with bitter orange oil and a few drops of sweat. That’s what this fragrance smells like to me and to me also 🙂 DER DUFT ACT creates a comforting atmosphere and I’d love to have it.

  • Welcome Cristian and thanks for this complete review! What I like about Act is that it is a versatile fragrance, perfect for any weather.

  • Welcome Christian!! Nice, clear description of what Der Duft Act would smell like. The story of the farmer on a step ladder and the scents around him made it clear that it’s a scent which is “succulent and mouth-watering while also bestial and offering up the perfect amount of funk”. I haven’t tried any Der Duft perfumes, yet. Any standard boutique, Macy’s, etc. would work, though I am more likely to buy it from Amazon, due to their tight online security and excellent customer service. Thanks Christian for the great, clear review. Appreciate the draw as always. I’m in USA.

  • ElenaChiss says:

I have never tried anything from this house, but I am glad to see that they are a constant presence here, on this blog. That means something!
    Many thanks from Europe!

  • Andreea Florica says:

Lovely pictures! I am curious about that note of star fruit. Never seen it used in perfumes until now. I am from Europe. Thanks!

  • Great review from Cristian. Dirty Citrus is combination or words I haven’t heard before. I am familiar with clean, but I can’t wrap my head around dirty… Very interesting!

The variety of Citrus notes in combination with Tobacco, Vetiver and other earthy notes sounds like an excellent summer evening fragrance.

I would love to see Der Duft in the John Lewis franchises in the UK. I frequently visit them for Creed (myself) and Jo Malone (my partner) fragrances.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Beautiful review, Cristian. Your vision of the perfume is riveting, and the fact that you have actually purchased the bottle speaks volumes.
I, too, prefer a citrus scent that is so much more than a cologne which is why Act sounds particularly intresting: lavender & tobacco are among my favorite notes.
    I’m from Russia

  • I like the notes in this one. I liked the part about the opening, that it has a lime note that makes your moutu weep. Thanks!

  • “Dirty citrus” sounds right up my alley. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. I’d love LuckyScent to carry Der Duft. In the meantime, thanks for the draw!

I live in Waldorf, MD, 20603, and I would
like to see this at Osswald NYC.

  • Welcome Cristian and congratulations for your inspired words and inspirational craft!
I found this article to be very evocative, transporting me exactly to the place and conditions described: an orangerie where the wonderful orange peel scent blends with the workers’ own tobacco-infused skin after a long day of work under the scorching sun. It sounds raw and familiar at the same time and definitely special among the many “tame” citruses that often rule the stage.
I would love to try this, from the EU.

  • macaroni023 says:

Thank you, Cristian, for review I totally agree with the idea that good perfumes tell a story and gets you exited. My favorite perfumes have that magical ability to spark all senses in me, remind me of music, art, places, colors, people. Oh! Vibrant and dirty citrus smell, sounds like such a perfect match for me, thank you for bringing our attention to it. Greetings from EU

  • flosolentia says:

I am very interested in the combination of citrus, tobacco and sweat, it seems to me that the aroma is powerful and very deafening, as described in Cristian’s review. In any case, I would like to try and would love to use this scent, especially since it was created by Prin Lomros. I am from Moscow, Russia

  • I haven’t tried anything from this house, but I noticed that it had some attention in the past, in other blog entries. This one seems nice enough and easy to wear on any weather. Thanks!

  • DER DUFT ACT is a slightly dirty citrus scent, invigorating and just a touch “obscene”. • First of all big welcome to Cristian! Looking forward to more articles with storytelling touch.
I had a pleasure to test the line and Act is my favourite so far.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Now we’re talking, DER DUFT ACT is my kind of fragrance with ambergris, musk and tobacco , and I’m particularly interested in earthy backbone
    Cristian Marianciuc mentioned.
I’d like to see DER DUFT fragrances in
Indigo Perfumery , Beverly Hills Perfumery, Luckyscent , high end department stores too
    USA, rarely Paris France

  • Claumarchini says:

Welcome Cristian, and well done! I have really enjoyed your review, so nice and evocative…I could see myself walking through an orchard and meeting a gardener to whom I asked if I could smell his hands! I have been reading many positive things about Der Duft but I am not familiar with their fragrances so I would love to be the lucky winner of Act, since the notes appeal to me so much! Love the paper crane too!!!
    Greetings from Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you for this fantastic review Christian! I am more than intgrigued by the dualistic nature of the fragrance: citrusy and crisp but skanky and warm. Love the comparison to a farmer in a citrus orchard wearing worn clothes and enjoying his smoke of tobacco. The notes sound amazing and I would live to try try “Act”. Based in the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Work clothes. I completely understand the kind of person and smell you are describing. This sounds like it would suit me nicely. I know Prin Lomros does citrus well from his release “Oliver”. I would really love to sample this one.

I am from Canada, so it would be great to get this one on Etiket. Thanks so much for running this contest.

  • DER DUFT ACT is definitely not you average spring and summer fragrance, but rather complex one instead.
Citrus peel, tobacco and sweat will make it really sexy .
I think all big places like Luckyscent, Beverly Hills Perfumery, Perfumology ,Indigo Perfumery should carry DER DUFT fragrances.
    Thanks for the giveaway
    USA

  • slightly dirty citrus and peerfectly clean and crisp shirt – now this is some contrast I’d like to smell :).
never closed my eyes when inhaling the fragrant fumes, maybe I should, see what happens.
    I am living in Europe.

  • After having read from the review, I am interested in trying this fragrance. I think that it’s interesting that a citrus-prominent fragrance would be animalic. I believe that in most citrus-prominent fragrances the citrus part is mostly just a top note. I’m thinking that if the citrus part is made a certain way, i.e. made to be animalic, then maybe it would cause the citrus part to be more memorable and having a presence throughout the entire wearing of the fragrance. I’m not sure how this fragrance smells, but according to the review, it seems like something that I could enjoy. I live in MD., U.S.A. I’m not sure what store I’d like to see carry fragrances from this company.

  • “Dirty citrus” is not something I’ve ever thought of as a category, but now that I have I want one! Animalics + citrus sounds fantastic

    From Canada

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Thanks for the draw and this review, Christian! Lime, bitter orange, star fruit, wonderful ingredients! I live in the EU.

Love how Cristian took us on a journey through the perfume! It was a fun read. Dying to try Prin’s work for Der Duft, there’s a kind of cohesive feel the house has & this is one I’ve not smelled yet. ps Tigerlilly would be a good spot for them.
    I’m in Dublin Ireland

  • Der Duft Act reminded me of making, and later eating Upside Down Lime Cake, while sitting at my favorite Cuban bar , where Cuban cigars are allowed.
Working with Europerfumes would be beneficial for the brand, and us , the buyers.
Appreciate Cristian Marianciuc review, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • These notes sound amazing. I love the idea of a citrus that can be used in any season.
    Louisiana, USA

  • DER DUFT I presume is a German niche brand , it means “The scent/smell” in German .
Cristian story about the rugged, heavy smoker farmer made me smile Just because of it , I’ll try to get my hands on a sample next time I’m visiting Germany.
Indigo Perfumery, Luckyscent, Twisted Lilly i believe would be good partners for DER DUFT in US
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • “When it comes to deciding whether or not I love a fragrance, for reasons other than the essential answer to the question “Does it smell good?”, I pay close attention to the part of my mind that loves quality storytelling.”

Storytelling is what i do for almost 20 years. I even teach others through consulting, and seminars.
To be honest as a customer, stories doesn’t move me much, if at all.
I love my hobby, but I buy fragrances not because of the story , but because of the brand, the perfumer and the notes.
The citrus peel, tobacco , vetiver and the funky elements is what intrigues in Act
By the way the way crane is painted is awesome. Original form of origami maybe?
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, two weeks in US -> two weeks in Scotland and so on. Basically both USA and UK at the same time

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest based on Cristian’s review of Der Duft Act is how Crisitian envisions a fragrance when he first smells it and what he gets from the fragrance is the beautiful fresh citrus clashing with green, earthy, and almost animalic components of moss, cypress, musk, and ambergris. This sounds truly delightful. I would love to see Der Duft carried in the USA someday. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I’ve been wanting to try Prin’s work and this one sounds very intriguing. Cristian’s description is artistic and objective as well. really enjoyed reading this. thank you for sharing your experience with us.

    – Taesik from South Korea

  • This house has some solid offerings! My favourite from them is Bubble, but I would love to give Act a try. Thanks!

  • I liked about Der Duft Act that is a fragrance good enough not for the summer searson, but for every time and weather. Thank you!
    I am in Romania, Europe

  • Welcome Cristian 🙂 !

I really like the analogy of the farmer used by Cristian, its a perfect way of imagining in our heads a bit of how it smells, a tobacco and citrus scent, sounds lovey!

Thank you Çafleurebon and Anselm for the giveway.

    Greetings from Portugal

  • Julesinrose says:

Well, just seeing the name Prim Losmos sparks my interest! I am a huge fan of his work. I am not a fan of lime in fragrance, however, but I believe, after reading this, that this scent could turn that around. I’m in the US and of course think Luckyscent should carry this line as they have “everything.”

  • Citrus and Ambergris… for me it must be a spot on combination! I absolutely love to try it!
    I’m from EU (Portugal)

  • I love the story the scent told to Christian. I am in Kansas in the US. We don’t have any boutiques here, so any online boutique would be a good one.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

What caught my attention the most was the description of rugged or hardworking hands and bitter orange. I work with wood pretty often and really would love a more confidant Citrus or fresh fragrance ! I just love orange and lime and a bit of sour in a fragrance !
    I live in the usa,ms

  • petergigov says:

Hiking in the woods is one of my favorite hobbies, I always bring with me two bottles of freshly squeezed lime and orange juice, with scoop of honey in each bottle.
Somehow now I’m thinking about it , the whole experience . The citruses, the woods and moss , and the musk.
A little bit of funkiness is actually welcome. I hope I’ll get more tobacco in Act .
I think being represented in USA by Europerfumes will work great for Der Duft , if it has to be one boutique Perfumology.
    Nice giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Great review, who wouldn’t like to smell the orange picker:)
    I’m in Slovenia, EU

  • Well written Cristian! I think you described the perfume in a very resonating way and I love the characteristic you mentioned of it being a bit “obscene”. I am a huge fan of subtly animatic citruses and have sampled all of the line except this one last year and loved the line but shipping is so pricey. I would love to be entered to win this and I think this is a house Indigo Perfumery should start stocking for sure!
    NY USA

  • Courtenay COURIER says:

Cristian’s review had me at ‘dirty citrus scent.’ Growing up, we sold oranges out of a dank, earthy old building and the description in the review with the mossy, dirty citrus brought back memories of that same building. I would love to win this bottle! I am in Canada.

  • WaltherP99 says:

DER DUFT ACT i think is a throwback to the classic Aromatics from the 80s and early 90’s. With Prin Lomros as perfumer well made i believe . I like his work , I’m wearing Cigar Rum Intense right now, one of his fragrances.
MaxAroma would be the best partner for DER DUFT, they do carry a few smaller European niche , and indie brands no one else has in US. Thanks
USA only , hopefully not for too long

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the great review Christian.

You had me when your review mentioned that the lime in the opening off this scent made the mouth water. I really like direction this citrus goes in – citrus, vegetal AND animalic!! That is rare.

I would love to see this scent in Sephora or Nordstrom.

    Cheers from WI, USA
