“To say it was a beautiful day would not begin to explain it. It was that day when the end of summer intersects perfectly with the start of fall.” – Ann Patchett

As the twilight of summer draws us into its enchanted and leisurely cadence, I have been immersed in two wonderful pieces of art: Frederick Ashton’s Midsummer’s Night Dream ballet and Darren Alan Honeysuckle Summer. The classical ballet is based on Shakespeare’s comedy and brings to life a fairy kingdom of sunny dreams and flower sprites. The pas de deux between King Oberon and Queen Titania is particularly perfect in its expression of end of summer wistfulness and romance. Their effortless floating and magical balance reminds me of Darren Alan Perfumes Honeysuckle Summer, a beautiful encapsulation of the last days of this season’s allure.

Independent American Perfumer Darren Alan features the flower honeysuckle in this fragrance. He explains, “I think what I enjoy the most about honeysuckle is the complexity of the scent. Yes it’s obviously floral, but it’s also green and slightly gourmand, with its sweet honey and nectarlike nuances. I also have gone childhood memories of tasting the sweet nectar on hot summer days…long summer days that didn’t involve school work…smelling honeysuckle puts me right back in that place…carefree and exploring the majesty of nature, even if it was just a wild honeysuckle bush along the side of a road.”

Darren is one of the most vigilant and ethical creators when it comes to the care he takes when making original materials to feature in his fragrances. As he explains, “the honeysuckle in Honeysuckle Summer is an accord that I created using a honey/beeswax extraction. My best friend’s landlord is also a beekeeper. He gave me some old honeycombs and beeswax that I processed and extracted an absolute from. It was a very messy & sticky process, but the resulting absolute is rich & complex and was the perfect base note to pair with the vintage musk accord. It will surely satisfy even the most demanding sweet tooth!”

Honeysuckle Summer is the August offering from his Perfume of the Month Club, which features a limited-edition fragrance created with a certain material or theme. Darren’s inspiration for the service is multi-layered, “firstly, I have so many gorgeous raw materials that I either use as only supporting notes in the fragrances in my permanent collection, or perhaps I bought them intending to use them, or for a bespoke project, or for smell training. So, I wanted to feature these stunning materials in a way that I cannot in my established collection. Secondly, I wanted to give my clients an opportunity to smell new things without having to commit to a full bottle. Thirdly, having the requirement of releasing a new fragrance every month is a great way of me being able to challenge myself as an artist and a perfumer.”

Darren Alan Perfumes Honeysuckle Summer opens with a bright flash of bergamot dancing along the sweet petals of its honeysuckle accord. Rich honey and peach balance their nectar-ripe flavors of slightly caramelized fruit and floral complexity. Summer’s warmth hums on my skin and creates a glow around me that family members adore. Into the dry down, Honeysuckle Summer eases into a vintage amber accord that elevates the fragrance into a slightly more formal setting. Our summer twilight has moved onto a veranda with plush seating and refined company. Sandalwood and a vintage musk reconstruction whisper quietly into the late summer evening. Darren Alan Perfumes Honeysuckle Summer is the perfect fragrance to keep hold of these glorious summer days as cold weather approaches.

Notes: bergamot, honeysuckle, ripe peach skin, beeswax, honey, vintage amber, sandalwood, vintage musk reconstruction

  • What really stands out to me about Honeysuckle Summer is how it perfectly captures that bittersweet, end-of-summer vibe. The honeysuckle note, combined with honey, peach, and beeswax, brings back memories of those carefree, sun-soaked days. I love how Darren Alan created the beeswax absolute from old honeycombs—it adds such a unique, natural richness to the scent. It starts off bright and sweet, but as it dries down, the sandalwood and vintage amber give it a cozy, nostalgic feel, like the warmth of a late summer evening fading into fall. It’s such a gorgeous way to hold onto summer just a little bit longer.

  • I love Darren’s work and am a proud subscriber of his perfume of the month plan. Honeysuckle Summer and Vetiver Blanc are my top picks from the collection so far and I cannot wait to see what he comes out with next. So thrilled to hear he is going to be stocked by Fragrance Vault! That’s excellent news for his business and for international customers! Best of luck to everyone! If my comment happens to be picked, please give it to someone else as I already own this beauty.

  • This fragrance sounds amazing. The process to get the honey absolute accord really makes me want to be able to smell this one. I’m in Davenport, FL.

  • Wait, I had no idea that Fragrance Vault had a physical store or made fragrances! I’ve admired the site several times at the vaulted treasures they have. Would love to visit in person and check them out! I also really love honeysuckle. It’s one of my favorite floral scents ever. Would love to check this out! Thanks so much! From USA.

  • Honeysuckle is a really interesting floral note. It’s deceptively simple but as Darren mentioned, there’s green, gourmand and honey nuances to it. I’m impressed he used a honey/beeswax extraction technique to make an absolute from an acquaintance’s hives. That shows some real dedication to the craft and why I love sampling from independent perfumers. MD, USA

  • I am always on the hunt for the perfect honeysuckle fragrance. I am most intrigued by the honeycomb accord in this one, sounds divine! I live in the US

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Wow! Honey & peach in a fragrance sounds like a great end of summer scent. The fact that he was able to work with old honeycombs to get an extract says a lot about Darren’s passion & creativity.

I just ordered a few samples from Darren Alan Perfumes and I’m looking forward to testing them on skin.

  • I have been loving his latest releases! The lilac and now this honeysuckle and so many others. It’s always exciting to see what’s coming. I love the gentleness of this, but behind that is a complex beauty as the article said! The beeswax and pack skin, the musk and amber. It’s all amazing! I am in California. Thank you for the chance to win!

  • Recently discovered Darren Alan Perfumes through another of Rachel’s reviews. Dorian’s Fougere is my fave so far! Honeysuckle Summer sounds like it captured those elements of late summer so well with a burst of citrus, sweetness, and that slight cooling of evening air through sandalwood and musk. It’s great to see independent perfumers gain exposure too! Cheers from Ohio! 🙂

  • I’m not familiar with the smell of honeysuckle, but Darren’s comments gave me a sense of what to expect from the green and “nectarlike nuances” of this floral. It’s also really cool that he was able to use materials he created from honeycombs beeswax sourced locally. Honeysuckle Summer sounds like a delightful way to show off its namesake, and a sunny summer wear. Great review, Rachel.

    I’m in the USA.

  • LuRon Anderson says:

What I loved about this is that honeysuckle is being the focus. I love the scent of honey suckle and is the highlight of summer in my opinion. Thank you for this beautiful review!

  • I’ve never seen a fragrance open with honeysuckle or the ripe peach accord. That’s an interesting spin and a welcomed change from the mundane. I imagine this as a gourmand and floral take on beeswax, honey, and nectar. This would be perfect for the upcoming fall and winter. From Jacksonville, NC.

I am a big fan of Darren Alan. I love his jasmine sambac absolute you can buy on his website. I also love to wear his Fetes de Noel perfume. He makes perfumes in the old fashioned way, perfumes that really last and that are so well-blended. When I was a kid, I used to love extracting the nectar from honeysuckle flowers. Honeysuckle Summer is definitely a fragrance for sultry nights. I enjoyed Rachel’s reference to Fredrick Ashton’s Midsummer Night Dream ballet.
