Darren Alan Perfumes Cuir de Russie is a unique reinterpretation of the classic leather fragrance; Darren has skillfully combined a vibrant array of top, heart, and base notes to create an intricate and artistic scent experience that radiates opulence and elegance. This unique and creative take on a revered fragrance from eras past is as they were swoon-worthy. I have worn this perfume several times across various temperatures, and it remains exquisite regardless of the weather.

Russian Leather is a tanning process that treats the leather with birch oil, which gives it a dark, smoky nuance reminiscent of castoreum. I wanted to counterpoint that heavy darkness against light citrus & delicate florals to create a yin-yang effect that vacillates between dark and light. I didn’t want to copy previous Cuir de Russie releases, such as the Chanel, but rather make my own representation of Cuir de Russie as a genre.” -Darren Alan

Darren Alan Perfumes Cuir de Russie announces itself with an effervescent warm burst of citrus. The bright and zesty blend of lemon, bergamot, and mandarin invigorates my senses as it uplifts me, while a hint of tarragon adds an unexpected herbaceous twist. This refreshing opening is sweetened by a succulent peach note, interwoven with a warm spiciness from clove and the intriguing lift of aldehydes, setting an enticing stage for the heart. As the citrus and opening notes merge and soften, it transitions smoothly into its richly floral heart of Jasmine and rose, exuding a classic elegance complemented by the sensuality of ylang-ylang. Carnation and cinnamon whisper depth, while Orris adds a velvety quality. The nuanced note of Galbanum provides a green freshness that harmonizes beautifully, grounding the floral notes. This heart is further enriched by the warmth of amber and the complexity of patchouli, alongside a soft leather accord that threads through it like a fine weaving. The base notes reveal Cuir de Russie’s actual depth, cohesively merging the perfume into all its beauty. The resinous sweetness of opoponax, Peru balsam, and Tolu balsam encircle the leather, adding richness and warmth. Benzoin and Tonka bean are creamy and soft, while sandalwood adorns a lavish smoothness to the oakmoss and vetiver, contributing an earthy, grounding layer that deepens the scent’s composure. Castoreum and musk add a hint of animalic sensuality, evoking a sense of intimacy and warmth. Cuir de Russie reminds me that we all have varied lives- layered, complex, and beautifully unique.

  • I have tried various Russian Leather scents and enjoyed them all but the listing of some of my favorite base notes here makes this mouth watering! The idea of tempering the dark with light is a great approach to add freshness to an old concept. I live in the US

  • I’ve never been made aware of this brand but after looking his creations up they seem so lavish and well thought out. The themes and stories being told are intentional and from what people say very accurate to the atmosphere he creates. The reason I looked his other scents up was bc this review was so well said I had to look into these. When I hear a perfume described as bringing in contrasts beautifully my ears perk up! I live in the USA

Not a huge fan of leather & peach but mix it with clove, cinnamon, patchouli & tonka bean now I’m curious. I’ve sampled a few Darren Alan fragrances so I know the blend and quality are top notch. Would love to get my nose on Cuir de Russie.

  • How exciting to have another fresh and interesting take on a classic! The notes sound like this fragrance will be complex and deep. I’m curious.

  • I enjoyed Darren Alan’s work on Into the Wild for Statik Olfactive and would like to try more of his offerings. I have heard good things about his nag champa fragrance which I can’t remember the name of and I’m a fan of leather scents. I’m in the USA.

  • I really like the idea of the balance between the light and dark aspects of the fragrance. I live in Florida USA.

Thanks for the lovely writeup Sandi.

There have been many versions of Cuir de Russie. It’s nice to see Darren forge his own path with this unique blend of ingredients. The use of peach, herbs like tarragon, really make this a fascinating fragrnace.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • If you are a long-time fan of Darren, like myself, or are new to his work, this is an excellent place to start your exploration of his house. It’s chock full of his neo-vintage style and is an amazing wear. The leather is brown and rugged, but the complimenting resins and woods make it incredibly smooth. It’s a wonderfully elegant experience. Like Sandi said, it unfolds over time, and slowly reveals layer upon layer. It’s incredibly complex, but totally wearable. Best of luck to everyone. I have a couple of these already, so please choose someone else if my comment is picked.

  • Heavy leather notes intimidate me, but Darren’s “yin-yang” approach captures my interest. I love a good peach note, when well done. I’ve been getting increasingly into jasmine and imagine it’s quite nice with the subtle animalic notes. USA

  • It sounds like this is more than just a leather fragrance, which is exciting. Peach, clover, carnation and ylang all sound interesting. Unsure of the aldehydes but over all the compositions sounds beautiful. I would love to try one of Darren Alan’s scents. USA…

  • I am familiar with Chanel Cuir de Russie and Darren took an interesting approach to softening the smoky leather scent. The bright citrus opening with a bubbly peach and clove notes frame the floral heart and are buttressed by the classic, complex base. The entire composition sounds well thought out and blended with quality ingredients. MD, USA.

  • Great that this is good in all sorts of weather. I haven’t explored leather much as a note. Probably just haven’t tried the right one yet….maybe this is it. I love peach and clove notes, never thought of them together before. Love that this has some resinous notes. I adore Musc Moderne, wore it the other day. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I love Darren Alan’s work! His consistent ability to create vintage-esque creations but make them his own and stunning is just amazing to me. Florals, chypres, basalmics… all. I love that he put Galbanum in the heart of a classic leather Chypre! And tarragon in the top note. Those little touches give it a signature. I would love to win this, I am located in the USA.

I would like to become more familiar with the genre Russian Leather, and I would like to try a Darren Alan fragrance. Even though I find castoreum to be a challenging note sometimes, I still would like to try Darren Alan’s “Cuir de Russie”. I like leather fragrances, and I like them when they include a fruity aspect, like apricot or peach. I think peach or apricot pair well with leather. I live in MD, USA.

  • Interesting take on Russian Leather, giving the dark base accord a bright foil of citrus and peach. The taragon note is intriguing; I don’t see it in fragrances often, but it’s expressive when it’s there. Darren has a knack for this type of vintage inspired perfumery, full of big, classic materials, and a rich drydown. His version of Cuir de Russie sounds terrific.

    I’m in the USA.

I always enjoy the unique way that Daren Allan puts his own spin on classic scents. I am intrigued by the tarragon and peach notes in Cuir de Russie. There are many other notes that add to this dynamic and lavish take on a classic. I am interested in the floral notes, especially the ylang ylang. I love leather fragrances, and this one sounds very unique.

  • Definitely the use of Russian leather as this is my first time hearing about it sparked my interest. VA, USA.

  • This review makes me think of being in a nice cozy sweater and carrying the most luxurious leather handbag. Slightly sweet musk and a little hint of peach sound like magic.
