“There are some things one can only achieve by a deliberate leap in the opposite direction.” – Franz Kafka

Do you ever wish the world came with a reset button? The promise of a new start forged in the absence of complication? According to Comme Des Garçons, their new release, Zero, composed by Fanny Bal, under the creative direction of Christian Astuguevieille represents “a radical expression of simplicity; a reset, the antithesis of excess … an exploration of freedom found within purposeful parameters”.

In Comme Des Garçons Zero, Franny Bal, a protégé of Dominique Ropion who shared her path to perfumery in ÇaFleureBon’s Young Perfumer series, has created a bold assertion and an austere insinuation—constructed by deconstructing—with recognition to the sustainability of its ingredients.

While Comme Des Garçons Zero may be minimalist in terms of its structure, it’s a powerful perfume which opens with a full-bodied cedar accord through a hint of bergamot. The cedar, which, per Comme des Garçons, was hand-harvested and extracted using hydroelectric power, is a perfume unto itself and suggests nuances of rosewood and mahogany. In the mid, a purposefully-synthetic rose accord mingles with an equitably-sourced Haitian vetiver which bolsters the cedar’s earthiness. All the while, there’s a crystalline angularity which embraces rather than fights an emerging softness, creating an exciting tension rather than disharmony.

Tying it all together, congruent to the Comme des Garçons philosophy of thinking outside the box, is a curious note of varnish. I was instantly reminded of a tour I once took of the Martin Guitar Factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where, since 1833, expert craftspersons have built guitars from blocks of wood to glossy sonic—and olfactive—marvels. I began to wonder if the interesting addition of a varnish accord bent the composition toward the abstract and therein, conjured images from my own personal history, my own interpretation. It was Jackson Pollock who said of abstract art: “Energy and motion made visible – memories arrested in space.”

Comme Des Garçons Zero is not an anti-perfume, nor is it a synthetic soliflore (à la Escentric Molecules Molecule 01). Zero is a study in thoughtful and thought-provoking ingredients which, beyond its artistic measure and carbon neutrality, smells really good. That is, after all, the essence of olfactive simplicity.

Zero is an eau de parfum which is available now, in 100ml fully-recyclable glass vessels. While evaluating Zero, I found it has moderate projection and excellent (12+ hour) longevity.

Top notes:  Varnish Accord –Bergamot; Middle notes: Vetiver Heart – Rose Oxyde;  Base: Cashmere, Musk, Cedar

  • This is truly an intriguing piece. As a musician, the smell of a freshly varnished violin is something that evokes happiness within me. I would love to try this out! I have not tried any of their fragrances yet.

    From USA.

  • I saw CDG ZERO on luckyscent and I think that you sold me. Comme des Garcons hits or misses… I didn’t like Copper but really love Avignon. I have also tried Wonderwood and like that too. The varnish note and that Fanny Bal trained with Domique Ropion really is impressive. The quote from Jackson Pollack and Franz Kafka are fantastic

  • I’m in with the minimalist/soliflore idea. I don’t have a favorite Comme Des Garsons fragrance. US

  • I enjoy minimalist compositions when they are done and it seems Comme des Garcons celebrates the new trend of desconstruction among modern perfumes. Zero looks like something that will smell great in the air and will intrigue other people. I am in US.

  • Zero sounds like it could either be amazing or too sharp. So hard to know! My favorite CdG scents have to be Sticky Cake or possibly Comme des Garcon 2 with that amazing sumi ink note.

  • I enjoy a woody cedar accord and would love to experience Zero. The varnish note is certainly drawing me in. I’m a fan of Comme Des Garçons unique fragrances. One of my favs is 8 88. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

Huge fun of the house ( perfumes, clothing, shoes..). I love the idea of sustainably created, carbon-neutral product in recyclable package. I am also intrigued by the simplicity of the formula. I wonder if this is indeed unusual/original or follows the line of recent perfume from D.S & Durga or Le Labo (clean, sharp, transparent, and uncomplicated). Definitely curious to try and see.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Zero seems like something that will smell great in the air and will intrigue other people. The thought that was put into this, as well as its composition, make it a unique fragrance worthy of attention.

I, unfortunately, have never tried a Comme Des Garçons fragrance.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

Seems simple yet so unique at the same time. Would like to try this.

  • Zero sounds like a really good, interesting cedar. I love cedar based frags, and lot of them smell similar, and smell the same from start to finish. The rose note in this sounds like it might give the cedar an added bit of sweetness, to overcome the dryness in the cedar. I really enjoy CDG Blackpepper and Man 2. Thank you for the draw! US.

  • Michael Devine’s review of Zero indicates that it’s neither a soliflore nor an anti-perfume. It is simple and elegant based on simplicity and sustainable ingredients. It reminds me of Japanese art, noted for elegant simplicity. I am intrigued by the varnish note and would like to try it out. Unfortunately I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, so no favorites, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Commes Des Garcons is a very interesting fragrance house, making very out of the box perfumes. I surely think this is one of them, having a cedar note based fragrance with its power and complexity. I would love to try it myself.

  • A combination of only the finest ingredients, as perfumer Fanny Bal honed each note to perfection. Bergamot opens Zero at the top, followed by a Rose Accord in the heart. Then the fragrance simultaneously transitions and concludes with Vetiver, Cedarwood and Musk.

  • Comme des Garçons always has such an interesting take n fragrances. I enjoy their unusual and minimalist approach. I enjoy both Comme des Garçons Copper and Pepper. The varnish note will resonate with a lot of people. I have a well loved Gibson guitar and that scent will bring up a lot of memories. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I just loved loved loved the dive into the scent as “anti-perfume” in everything from concept to materials to the way that the materials were sourced/produced. I don’t think I could pick a favorite but Antoine Lie’s Wonderwood is so simply stunning and the Olfactory Library Calamus is very fun!

  • Delightful! I love the premise and the execution sounds really interesting. I know exactly what you mean by a “varnish note” and can smell it in my mind. This sounds like a really fun, unique scent to wear. Amazingreen is the only scent I’ve tried from Commes des Garcons, so it has to be my favorite. Luckily I love it. I am in the US

  • Ian andrews says:

The review of this actually made it interesting. When I heard that the new fragrance is going to be called zero, I was not excited at all. But the review actually made it sound intriguing

  • patrick_348 says:

Michael certainly made CDG Zero sound interesting. I like his pointing out that the rose is purposefully synthetic because I am intrigued by the notion sometime expressed that some of the best fragrances come out of a careful balance of natural and synthetic notes. His description of the varnish accord is also provocative. CDG is a huge absence in my fragrance familiarity zone, as I have not tried anything by them, despite lots of reading about them. Thank you, Dover Street Market, for making the draw available.

  • Great review by Michael, the varnish accord sounds interesting. Marseille is my favorite Comme Des Garcons. NV, USA.

  • I am very curious about this one. Mostly because I like to be surprised by something that sounds unappealing but ends up being addictive. Varnish as an accord just sounds odd but may be really attractive when combined with the other ingredients. Also, the angularity embracing softness sounds good. Thank you for the draw.

  • John McDonald says:

Nothing smells better than a new guitar.
I catch myself sniffing my Martin guitar before I play, after I play and when I take it out of the case.
I love these analogies and am jealous of the writers abilities to contour them.
    Would love to win.
I do not have a favorite.

  • So creative to make a fragrance based on such an abstract concept of reset, renewal, and freedom. Each sustainable ingredient seems to be thoughtfully chosen. I have not tried a Comme Des Garcons fragrance and would love to try this! I am from the USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I like how Comme des Garçons fragrances always offer up a surprise, a surprise that always makes sense. I am very interested in the varnish notes, as I am a fan of industrial notes. I also like cedar and vetiver. I like 2 from Comme des Garçons.

  • megabass99 says:

Thought the review is interesting because they took the zero waste concept from the scent to the bottle/packing itself. My favorite CDG scent is anything with oud. Thanks! from Chandler, AZ

  • Jennifer Wallace says:

I agree with Michael’s review, and also wanted to add to it. I’m wearing my wee sample of Zero right now. It is lovely! In the top there is something cold about it, almost slightly mentholated. Maybe that is the varnish accord, I am not sure. It softens after a while and then becomes a woodsy dream on my skin. This definitely has CdG dna. It reminds me of Wonderwood, a bit, and that’s not a bad thing.

  • WaltherP99 says:

One of the things I enjoy the most on Cafleurebon , is reading about fragrances I know , when the reviewer opinion is different than mine

“bold assertion and an austere insinuation” and “powerful perfume”

Not to me , Zero i believe is not Uber, but still minimalistic take on “Iso-E Super or derivatives, aka second skin” kind of fragrance. There are some twists , with the varnish accord, but I wouldn’t call the fragrance “bold” , and/or “powerful”
I also get similarities with older Comme des Garcons fragrances, especially Wonderwood , the cedar, bergamot, vetiver.
To me Zero smells like a slightly rebellious,on first glance at least, love child of Comme de Garcons own Wonderwood , and Opus X by Amouage.
I do like it too , but some could find it quirky.
If I have to rate my favorite Comme des Garcons fragrances:
    1. Floriental
    2. Avignon
    3. Hinoki
Just followed Michael, the other profiles I follow for a long time @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

I would love to try Comme Des Garçons Zero based on Michael’s review. I loved learning this was perfumed by Franny Bal, a protégé of Dominique Ropion because I remember reading about her path to perfumery. Comme Des Garçons Zero sounds like a creative minimalist fragrance creation with a unique combination of woody, earthy, and rose elements that really interests me. My favorite Comme Des Garçons fragrance is Copper. I’m from Ohio, USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I am interested to see what this fragrance is like. I’m interested to see what the cedar is like, and in combination with the rose oxyde and the vetiver. I haven’t tried anything yet from Comme des Garcons, but I’ve been interested in trying a lot of their fragrance releases. I live in the U.S.A.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the review Micahel. This was a great review.

I love that this fragrance is so minimalist – from the packaging to the notes. I was looking at their website and it looks like the cap is not plastic and they used a single ink for printing.

The note list is quite sustainable and interesting – a mix and contrast of woodiness, minerality and an ever so curious varnish accord. I wonder if the varnish note is an artifact from the cedarwood?

My favourite Comme De Garcon is Avignon.

    Cheers

  • petergigov says:

Comme Des Garçons are quite experimental , you never know what to expect .
I’ve smelled a few, and even own Wonderoud. I see some slight similarities between Wonderoud and Zero , the first one is for dressed up occasions, and the second i think is day time , like Michael said “energy and motion” , versatile fragrance .
    Nice giveaway, USA

I know COMME des GARÇONS as high end, streetwear brand first . Most of their clothing lines are leaning towards younger demographics , others i wear myself, I like the limited edition collaboration with Converse , and with Гоша Рубчинский / Gosha Rubchinskiy
Not many know that COMME des GARÇONS operates the Gosha Rubchinskiy label entirely, including its production, sales, trademark, marketing and distribution.
Гоша Рубчинский / Gosha Rubchinskiy and Wonderwood are the 2 COMME des GARÇONS in my collection.
Zero I think is again streetwear oriented fragrance, the varnish accord , the woods and the vetiver I’m looking for the most.
Thank you Michael , and COMME des GARÇONS

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin’ dirt and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity?
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city
    All around people looking half-dead
Kept walking down the sidewalk, other than a matchhead

But at night it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat it’s gonna be alright
And baby, don’t you know it’s a pity
The days can’t be like the nights
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city

Cool town, evenin’ in the city
Dressed so fine and lookin’ so pretty…..

Joe Cocker – Summer In The City , I do believe the original was a The Lovin’ Spoonful song , but I like the remix better. I almost started singing the song when I finished reading Michael Devine review . Super hot and humid Summer in NYC , London, Paris and so on, that’s like I think Zero would smell.
CDG i know for the Incense collection, Kyoto and Avignon, and my younger cousin wears Play Red . Play is sub-brand of CDG , like Casamorati to Xerjoff
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Ignoring all the interesting ideas in this perfume, I straight-up love the smell of cedar, and it sounds like there’s a lot of that here (along with rosewood and mahogany). I don’t know what to make of the varnish accord. Would I enjoy wearing this? Would I enjoy smelling this, and thinking about wearing it, but never take it off the shelf? I think the woody heart and base will make this a fragrance to wear more than an art project—though both have their value. Really interesting composition and a thoughtful review.

I’m in the midwest, USA, and I haven’t tried any Comme Des Garçons fragrances.

  • My favorite Comme des Garcons is Floriental , unique fragrance that smells differently on different people. Some think it’s a floral, some amber, to me it’s sweet, smoky and juicy plum fragrance that reminds me of traditional Japanese Yam & Purple Sweet Potato Tea Cake with Ume,
    with incense .
Zero is very different from Floriental, and focused on the self awareness and minimalism in woody and cozy form.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Minimslist but powerful. Sounds like a fragrance worth trying. In addition to that, the rose and Haitian vetiver are very appealing notes to me in fragrances. I have heard a lot about Comme Des Garvons Man but I have not tried it yet.

  • I discovered Comme des Garcons brand, not just the fragrances because of Pharrell Williams , I’ve always been a fan of him. He not only wears the clothes, but also has a fragrance collaboration called Girl . The rumors are on a meeting about Pharrell and Comme des Garcons future clothing collection one lady was wearing Wonderwood, because how impressed by the smell he was , later on Girl was created. I love the way Girl smells, and I’m in possession of 5 back up bottles too .
Inoffensive, environmental friendly packaging and scent, what I think of Zero
    Thanks for the draw
