Christmas Eve in Moscow:  A Cup of Masque Milano Russian Tea (Julien Rasquinet) + Festive Draw

Masque Milano Russian Tea by Julien Rasquinet

The scent of Christmas feels like magic in the air and brings some of the fondest memories of all. It will be slightly different for each of us based on where we come from, yet specific olfactory threads are woven into many of our pasts. A time of peace and slowing down, enjoying the little things, and preparing to step into the new year, is the best time to look back with gratitude on all the precious memories we have acquired. We are what we believe. Two fragrances signify Christmas for me and both are from Italy:

Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino

Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino by Olya Bar©

Master Perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena was in Italy when creating Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino  which transports me to the childhood days of large gatherings around the table overflowing with what one may call a feast of delights and the scent of champagne bubbles in the air. We would decorate the whole dining table early in the morning with a massive bowl of ripe mandarins and holiday taper candles. The mixture of the juicy tart aroma of the mandarin mixed with the scent of fresh fir balsam coming from the Christmas tree is forever a scent of winter holidays and happy days in my mind. Mandarins would serve as a decoration on the tree and be picked by all the kids at the party, savoring the juices running down the happy rosy cheeks. One may think of the Italian coast in the heart of summer while composing this, while for the other, it’s a day filled with warmth and celebration in Moscow covered in clouds of snow. The magic of fragrances lives in their abilities to immerse us in memories we hold dear to our hearts and the precious moments we hold on to for the hope of reliving them again.

Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino Notes: tangerines, black currant, white musk

Best fragrances for Christmas

Where there is tea, there is paradise…an old Russian saying

Masque Milano Russian Tea by Julien Rasquinet is my second trip down memory lane. A fragrance inspired by the Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg. In the very first days of St. Petersburg, it was simply the beginning of the road to the ancient city of Novgorod, but it quickly became adorned with beautiful buildings, squares, and bridges. It became the very center of the bustling, rapidly growing city, in addition to the many different denomination churches that line Nevsky, which prompted the French writer Alexander Dumas to call it “the street of religious tolerance.”

You see, while Moscow is the cool cousin that everyone wants to meet and be like, St. Petersburg is the cultural heart of Russia, its true soul. One may escape the cosmopolitan buzzing streets of Moscow into its warm cozy bookstores and courtyards of St. Petersburg, as one would escape London for Paris. You stumble upon little cafes and hidden bookstores where the owner would treat you to a cup of steaming black tea. That’s what Masque Milano Russian Tea smells like, a feeling of warmth hitting as you come in from the freezing cold, into a little cafe where the walls are lined with shelves of curiosities, a sweet-smelling bowl of raspberry preserve you sweeten your tea with is waiting on the table for you. It is an ancient custom to put the preserve in the tea, letting it mix with the bitter aftertaste of leather and birch. You sip it closely, watching the snowflakes dance widely outside of your window, and the warmth of the tea slowly takes over your body. You don’t have anywhere to be for a few more hours and will be home in time for Christmas. For now, you wrap your hands around the teacup, inhale the dry smoky aroma of the tea, and let your thoughts drift. After all, the magic of life is in little moments like this.

Masque Milano Russian Tea Notes: Mint, black pepper, raspberry, black tea, magnolia, everlasting flower, leather accord, incense, birchwood, cistus-labdanum.

I loved the evocative scenes described for both reviews! In particular, the Russian Tea portrait. Indeed, it does feel cozy, refreshing, smoky, yet also sweet and somewhat transparent. This holiday season, I will be dousing myself in pretty standard spicy holiday fare–Chergui–but for cozy days inside, I like to play a little “wishful thinking” and and wear some lovely pastoral scents that evoke greener times, like DSH’s Highland Idyll or Dusita’s Issara. Also loved the citrus-inflected memories re: the Labortorio. Thanks so much for this draw! Russian Tea is a favorite of mine and I’ve coveted a full bottle of it. I’m in the US.

  • Growing up in a British family, I always had tea time at home. Would love to try this perfume, cause I know would get me back in time to my childhood. Enjoyed Olya’s memories cause I think everyone can identify those Christmas memories from Childhood. I will be wearing By the fireplace tonight. I live in the U.S

I do love Julien Rasquinet as a perfumer the notes of black tea and Raspberry sound sumptuous. I will be wearing Paco Rabanne Victory in the holidays. I loved the nostalgic and comforting feeling of a nice cup of tea and the Christmas connotations by Olya. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

I don’t have any tea fragrances but I am intrigued by this concoction and the fact that Julien Rasquinet is the perfumer is an added bonus. A beautiful description by Olya tea and Christmas time just hits the spot everytime. I will be wearing Serge lutens Chergui. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Olya’s Christmas memories are so nice and cozy! I want to watch the snowflakes outside and sip at some delicious tea! I’ve never been to Russia but it is for sure magical during winter. I did sample Russian Tea a while back and I loved it. Masque Milano fragrances are in general something I love and I own a couple. Russian Tea was always on my wish list. Great choice for this cold weather. My holiday fragrance choice is Baruti Perverso, I love the roasted nuttiness of that fragrance, plus it is insanely potent. I’m from Illinois, US.
    Merry Christmas!

  • I did not know before Olya’s review that Moscow may be cool but it is Saint Petersburg that is the cultural capital of Russia. Olya gives us a little tour of Saint Petersburg with its bookshops and cafes. I am in US.

  • I enjoyed the interesting details in Olya’s Christmas Eve memories. I will be wearing Zaharoff Signature Rosé. I live in Poland, EU.

  • I absolutely love Russian Caravan tea with its Lapsang smokiness! The way it’s blended with raspberry, leather, incense and labdinum sounds truly beautiful. Im having a very quiet Christmas thanks to Omicron. I’ve been feeling insense this month so tonight I’m wearing CDG Incense Jaisalmer. The spices make it feel festive and as my partner gets annoyed when I wear loud perfume in the house this is perfect. Another one I’m liking lately is Tauer Incense Rosé. Cheers from Brooklyn, NY.

  • What a transportive review! Even though I’m from a coastal town in the northeast, it still reminded me of Christmas shopping at the local boutiques, popping inside to look and to warm your hands and nose. USA

  • A wonderful review from Olya. It transported me directly from Russia to Northern Ireland when i was a little girl – christmas eve in the country with my mum and my granny. Tea always on the stove, and mum drank it black. This aroma, mixed with fruity jelly, being melted by us for the trifle on Christmas day. Usually snow outside, but we were warm, happy and excited to see what Santa Claus would leave us children tomorrow morning! Thank you for pressing a rewind button in my memories. I’d like Santa to bring me some beautiful Masque Milano Russian tea, please. 🙂

I am in Northern Ireland and will be wearing Le Labo, The Noir 29 on Christmas day, tomorrow.
Merry Christmas to everyone reading. x

  • Masque Milano Russian Tea sounds like a perfect gourmand for a cozy winter night. The mint, spice and raspberry seem a good complement to the tea. The leather and birchwood speak to a cold winter day. St. Petersburg is a cultural treasure. I would love to visit some day. I’ll be wearing Maison Margiela Replica by the Fireplace for Christmas. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Very interesting to hear of the comparison of Mosow and St Petersburg. Olya Christmas memories sound idyllic and ones to cherish. Happy Holidays to all! I am in the US an wearing vintages Habanita and tomorrow Cafe Tuberosa. Russian Tea sounds fantastic!

  • Olya’s review is heartwarming and reminds me that the magic of Christmas is in the little moments. It also immersed me in her memories of the warm Italian coast and a cosy winter in Moscow. I’ll be wearing Poesie’s Twice to Tea this holiday season, another lovely tea fragrance I enjoy. Merry Christmas from the UK.

  • Olya does a great job describing both Fragrances and how it made her feel. Russian Tea sounds like family gatherings, cozy something for the holidays. The Labortorio with the citrus notes is very familiar growing up in an Italian house. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Professor_Bair says:

I loved hearing about the hidden bookstores. I’ll be wearing Roses on Ice. Merry Christmas! USA

  • Such a lovely review Olya! I love the metaphor of Moscow being the cool cousin to St Petersburg’s soul. I totally agree even though it’s been over a decade since my last visit to Russia. But love of the country is one of the main reasons I’m so drawn to this scent and Russian Tea remains my favorite from the Masque Milano line. I don’t need to be included in 5he draw. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your post!

  • Olya Bar’s memories of a tea cafe in St Petersburg where hot Russian tea is served with raspberry preserves sounded very inviting. While I have enjoyed Russian tea a number of times, I have not tried it with raspberry preserves. Maybe this winter I will… It’s nice to hear that Masque Milano Russian Tea can trigger such warm, nice, cozy memories. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • The note of tea is quite possibly my favorite in all of perfumery. Living in the frigid Midwest, it just evokes a sensation of coziness and warmth. Naturally, I have had my eye on Masque Milano’s Russian Tea for quite some time now. Olya’s description of Russian Tea as “…a feeling of warmth hitting as you come in from the freezing cold, into a little cafe where the walls are lined with shelves of curiosities…” is downright dreamy. That, to me, is the epitome of coziness and allure. Transportive fragrances are my absolute favorite and it would be a pleasure to finally get my nose on this gem. Until then, Cremo Spice & Black Vanilla and Argos Triumph of Bacchus shall navigate me through colder weather this holiday season. Thanks so much for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois!

  • Derek Bedinghaus says:

Love the memories that scents can bring back or take you to. Love the description of Russian tea & sitting there holding the teacup smelling the aroma which is what I do after shoveling snow & then relax with that warm drink. Great in depth descriptions of both fragrances. The fragrance I will be wearing for Christmas will be an original called merry oudmas.

  • ‘The magic of life is in little moments like this’, i’m wearing Laboratorio Olfattivo Alkemi mastered by Marie Duchene,a sweet myrrh.Merry Christmas! From EU.

  • This was a cool review. I can picture the scene of having hot tea with preserves in St Petersburg. I had the privilege of traveling through the city a few years ago. This review made me want to go back and experience it properly, starting with a cup of tea in a quaint cafe.

My Christmas season fragrances: The weather has been almost springlike in Indiana so I decided to go with something aromatic and slightly floral for Christmas Eve, Dusita’s Moonlight in Chiangmai. Today, Christmas Day, I will wear Cape Heartache from Imaginary Authors in the morning and Maison Tahite’s Cacao 2 in the evening.

  • I’m not a big fan of Christmas, honestly, it isn’t even my celebration. But smells and fragrances make the end of the year more tolerable. Also, as I am aware, St. Petersburg is really humid city, but the description of the perfume seems very nice. I live in France, EU

  • What I like the most about Olya’s Christmas Eve memories is that it’s kind of similar to mine. We also decorate the table in the morning but it’s not only with mandarins but also with apples and nuts.Decorating a Christmas tree is the best memory from childhood. I live in Poland EU, where in the winter we drink lots of tee as well but usually it is spiced with honey and lemon. This Christmas I’m wearing Baccarat Rouge 540.

  • Olya has been able to put in words, what I most like in winter, and of course Christmas. The contrast between hot and cold, the pleasure of warm sweet tea, and to be able to discover another treasure in my favourite library. Thank you for this amazing opportunity and Merry Christmas to all of you. From EU.

  • I enjoyed the picturesque descriptions of drinking tea in Russia. I have no idea what I’ll be wearing this holiday season. US

  • Holiday memories are some of our strongest connections to our past, I think, and Olya’s are lovely. She transported me to small shops and the smell of spice and tea. I’m wearing Jul et Mad Stairway to Heaven right now because it is bright and warm this Christmas morning. But I’ve been leaning toward Amouage perfumes this season. USA

  • Olya’s memories of Christmas are very close to me and I clearly imagined New Year’s Eve in Moscow. The streets are adorned with snow and lights, indeed, it gives the impression of anticipation of the celebration. I was born in Russia and after reading Olya’s post I instantly felt warm nostalgia.
    Greetings from the UK!

  • Oh, a bowlful of mandarins and sweet smiles of children, lit by holiday candlesI I would absolutely love to try the Russian Tea fragrance. I have no special fragrances for the holidays, but am happily spritzing my Annik Goutal Rose Absolute, which is regretfully almost gone. Merry Christmas! From the Boston area.

  • I really liked this part: One may think of the Italian coast in the heart of summer while composing this, while for the other, it’s a day filled with warmth and celebration in Moscow covered in clouds of snow. The magic of fragrances lives in their abilities to immerse us in memories we hold dear to our hearts and the precious moments we hold on to for the hope of reliving them again.

For this Christmas Eve I chose to wear Ambre Nuit by Dior as I find it very cozy.

    Thanks for the draw!
    Europe

  • I love Olya’s description of these book stores or small cafes… the idea of enjoying a cup of black tea and the smells described. The leather, the birch of the black tea all being slightly sweetened by this raspberry preserve. I’m transported! Beatiful piece.

I might either wear something very leathery or possibly TFs TV. TFTV is the holidays in a bottle. Another option could be Sushi Imperiale by Bois 1920. I’m in NJ USA.

  • Thanks to Ida Meister review, I bought Limone. It’s my second Laboratorio Olfattivo ,together with Tonkade. I like how Olya described Mandarino, happy days fragrance.
Masque Milano Russian Tea i had the pleasure of smelling before. The steaming black tea is so strong in a good way, that the fruitiness is almost hidden. In my opinion the fragrance smells smooth, and a bit mature.
In my possession is Tango Masque Milano = Holiday season fragrance. I’ll be also wearing Zaharoff Signature Pour Homme, Creed Royal Oud and Nasomatto Pardon.
    Thank you all

  • Thank you, Olya for this holiday mood and interesting choices !
I love Russian Tea and masque Milano perfumes!
Have heard so many amazing reviews about Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino but have tested yet!

  • whimsical diva says:

Absolutely loved the description of St Petersburg in Olya’s review. I’ve travelled extensively in Eastern Europe, but never been to Russia, and given the current state of the pandemic, doesn’t look like I’ll be traveling anytime soon. So the review almost transported me there.

The perfumes I’ll be wearing this holiday season are all either vanilla based fragrances – Tihota, Vanille Havane, Tobacco Vanille to name a few – or leather based – Cuir Ottoman and Cuir de Russie – or incense based (Kyoto, Avignon, Jaisalmer, Zagorsk).

I’d love to enter the draw. I live in California, USA.

  • Sounds a like a great gourmand for the cold winter-nights. The review brought me somehow back to memories sitting in cold Vienna together with my now passed grandmother – thinking Russian tea with lemon, and eating bread with butter and sardines.

I will be wearing “Herod” by Parfums de Marly for this holiday season.

    Living in Germany, EU

  • Saint Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to.
Vanhera reminded me of making, and later eating Orange Cardamom and Cinnamon Buns , that’s the only Laboratorio Olfattivo I’ve smelled. I also have a lot of mandarins and balsam fir memories as a kid , we all do.
Russian Tea to me smells like Freshly baked Traybake Cake with Raspberries , and cup of Yunnan Black Tea with cinnamon and lime on the side. No wonder Olya loves it so much.
Xerjoff Italica, Dior Fève Délicieuse , Shay & Blue London Salt Caramel I’ll be wearing for sure.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • A few years back I should have attended a conference in St Petersburg, but there where obstacles. I like the idea I would have found such bookstores and experienced everything about Russian Tea. Now I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • sillage4ever says:

I’m in mermaid-bottled, pomander-scented L de Lolita Lempicka for Christmas. Russian Tea sounds like an excellent way to get through the coldest winter months, love the dark raspberries in the snow vibe Olya described.

I’m in the USA wishing you and everyone at ÇaFleureBon a merry holiday and happy new year.

  • Thanks for sharing your Christmas memories, Olya. I enjoyed the part about the mandarins and how the children enjoyed them. I’m sniffing Encens Mythique D’Orient Guerlain this holiday. Merry Christmas all. Mich USA

  • Thank you for this article and drawing! I would absolutely love to have a bottle of Russian Tea. I was able to smell it a couple of weeks ago and Olya described it well.

My favorite part of the article is something I’ll be turning over in my head in the near future, contemplating “We are what we believe”.

I also have some black currant preserves in my refrigerator, and I’ll surely be adding them to my tea tomorrow as well.

I live in Houston, TX, USA.

  • ***I’m so sorry I forgot to add what I’m wearing this holiday season! Today (Christmas Day) I’m wearing a sample of Guerlain’s Oriental Brulant which a friend gifted me, this morning was Jasminora, yesterday I wore Pacifica’s Sugared Amber and Dior Addict.

Thank you for this article and drawing! I would absolutely love to have a bottle of Russian Tea. I was able to smell it a couple of weeks ago and Olya described it well.

  • Olya’s vision of a hot cup of tea in a cozy cafe or bookstore, watching the snow outside, is so profoundly evocative for me — this is something I have done in many different cities (although not yet St. Petersburg) as well as in my own town (Ithaca, NY), but not for almost two years, since the pandemic began! I did spend Christmas Eve drinking a hot cup of tea at my own home, though. This holiday season I have been wearing Arquiste Misfit (decadent and warm) and Tanais Ancients (imagining myself into a springtime forest).

  • I just loved reading Olya’s memories especially sipping a cup of tea watching snowflakes dance.
The writing is so evocative, now I desperately want to go to St Petersburg and explore the bookshops and cafes! I am wearing Passage D’enfer as i associate it strongly with Christmas and Bengale Rouge by Papillon for cozy nights, I love the sound of Russian Tea and have everything crossed. I am in U.K.

  • Thanks for the great review Olya.

I very much enjoyed reading through your christmas memories. I have never been to Russia and hope to some day and I lived vicariously through your article.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I loved Olya’s reminiscence about Christmas with mandarin oranges and balsam fir. For Xmas Eve, I wore Sebastian Signs #17 oil. That scent is pure comfort for me. I am in the US.

  • mindythesidhe says:

Black tea, raspberry jam and sitting on leather….Olya’s evocative memories transport me to the holidays in movie Dr Zhivago!!! Thank you for this wonderful review and draw. I am in the USA.

  • I love how fragrance draws on the recesses of our memory banks. Olya, this was a very good read and transported me to your native Russia thank you. Oh, this sentence really speaks to me “a sweet-smelling bowl of raspberry preserve you sweeten your tea with is waiting on the table for you. It is an ancient custom to put the preserve in the tea, letting it mix with the bitter aftertaste of leather and birch.” I will be wearing the beautiful Musc Tonkin for the next few days, with gratitude to the friend that shared it with me. I would love the Russian Tea. I am in the US

  • I loved the first memory, the smell of mandarins just screams christmas to me. I’m always the one who empties the citrus basket! What I wear during holidays really depends on my mood, so I’ll just say that right now I’m wearing Jovoy Incident Diplomatique. I’m considering a change, because I’ve heard that I smell like a lump of grass pulled out of dirt with roots. Guess that’s gonna be my “in house” fragrance. I live in Poland.

  • My favourite from this house is Madeleine. An out of this world, delicious gourmand fragrance.
Russian Tea looks to be also an interesting perfume coming from Masque Milano. Smoky, spiced tea sounds like a perfect smell for the cool weather.
Thank you! I am in Europe.

  • For me Christmas scent is a combination if incense burning, pine tree, nutty cookies and candlewax. But either of reviewed perfumes could feature as Christmas olfactory journeys.
    I’m in EU

  • Thanks for the article Olya!

Thanks for sharing your Christmas memories with us. I completely agree that this is the time of peace and slowing down, enjoying the little things, and preparing to step into the new year.
What better way to do that then with a little hot cup of comfort.

You piqued my interest when you described a feeling of warmth hitting as you come in from the freezing cold, into a little cafe where the walls are lined with shelves of curiosities, a sweet-smelling bowl of raspberry preserve you sweeten your tea with is waiting on the table for you…I can’t wait to find out myself!

I have been wearing Aaron Terence Hughes’ Patchouli Noir and Santal Extreme over the holidays.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I love how Olya compares summer in Italy to winter in Moscow, using the fact that scents can bring out the most vivid and unique memories in all of us, no matter where we are from. That’s one of the things I love most about fragrances, they can be and mean such different things for each of us. It’s magic!

I’ve been wearing Coreterno’s Mystic Sugar a lot these days, and I’ve also been trying out some new (to me) vanilla-centric perfumes as it feels fitting for the season. I only wish we had some snow here in Lisbon to complete the picture!

Would love to win Russian Tea, it’s one of my top wish list perfumes! Happy holidays and a happy new year!

I’m in Portugal, EU. @scentrified on IG

  • I have not smelled Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances yet ,but Olya Bar review of Mandarino brought back old memories.
Russian Tea is so special, the leather, mint and tea are staples, I also really like the addition of the juicy berries, giving the fragrance some modern contemporary twist.
In my rotation are Masque Milano Tango, Frank No.3 Frank Los Angeles , and vintage Opium Pour Homme Eau de Parfum Yves Saint Laurent

I’m sorry for the double post, I have no idea how my first comment went to a different theme ?!??!?

I loved Olya’s Christmas Eve memories – mostly because I can truly relate to them. I remember putting orange and mandarin peels on radiators with my mother to amp up the special holiday vibe in the house, and there would be decorations hand made using the Christmas tree branches placed in the hall and the living room, creating an amazing invigorating scent mixture with the citruses. The scent of candles would soon join the duo to complete the mystery of the magical evening. This Christmas I wore Back to Black. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • For this holiday season I’ve been wearing fragrances like Milano Fragranze’s “Basilica”, Mercedes-Benz “Club Black”, and a lot more. I still haven’t tried anything yet from Masque Milano, but I’d like to try their collected works- I’ve tried the first eight fragrances from Milano Fragranze, though. The fragrance called “Russian Tea” sounds like something which I would enjoy, and I hope to win the giveaway draw. I found Olya’s review to be informative concerning certain aspects of Russia. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway draw.

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo is one of the most underrated niche houses out there . I own two bottles , Alambar and Daimiris , love both. Value for the money is great. Jean-Claude Ellena made green line i don’t know.
Olya review of Russian Tea is spot on , I can see the Russian connection myself.
Overall experience i get from it is traditional Russian ritual of drinking Samovar Tea , and eating home made raspberry jam . When I smelled it for the first time, that’s what came to mind.
I also agree with Olya about the lack of moder day sweetness, the fragrance is dark , and moody , and it’s not for everyone.
In my opinion Russian Tea is one of the best tea based fragrances ever created .
    All profiles I already follow
I love wearing boozy fragrances around Christmas time,
Kutay by Unique’e Luxury , Enigma Pour Homme Roja Dove Established Cognac 66 Krigler . On New Years Eve I’ll be wearing Kiste Slumberhouse
    Thanks a lot

  • Bravo to Masque Milano for releasing Russian Tea , and to Olya Bar for her throwback kind of review.
She transported me to Russian country side , and and black tea, birch , trees , woodiness, a touch of incense… can you repeat all that again please?
Laboratorio Olfattivo i don’t know yet, but because of Olya, I’m thinking about my youth, no doubt i can relate to both Mandarino and Russian Tea
Cape Heartache Imaginary Authors and Oud Ispahan Dior are my go-to last few days

What I enjoyed most about Olya’s Christmas Eve memories are how she tied them into the two fragrances Labratorio Olfacttivo Mandarino from her mandarins and fir balsam experiences as a child and Russian Tea when she was comparing St. Petersburgs cozy feel with a spicy tea in a cafe reading a book. They both sound amazing and very fitting for the holiday season. I will be wearing Teo Cabanel Cafe Cabanel during this holiday season a sweet and cozy gourmand which is absolutely beautiful. I am from the USA.

  • Wow , not one, but two blasts from the past
My grandma taught me how to dry And use Mandarin Orange Peels .
Laboratorio Olfattivo i know because of Alkemi . Nice balsamic gourmand with smokiness , and decent dose of red wine in the base.
I had the blast of being in Saint Petersburg 10 years ago during the famous White Nights
Mysterious, fruity, – and magically smoky , in Russian Tea the Julien Rasquinet mingles crispy wild berries , with smoky wood, dark black tea , and frankincense. The result is magical, one of a kind tea fragrance , and my favorite Masque Milano
Thank you Olya, and Masque Milano for the opportunity

  • What beautiful memories! I love how scents can remind us of wonderful times, especially Christmas. It’s my favorite time of year and I love picking specific scents to remind me of the season. I love the description of the children’s faces dripping with mandarin juice. I can imagine how comforting it is. I would love to try Russian Tea! It sounds beautiful and like nothing I have in my collection. This Christmas I wore By The Fireplace by Maison Margiela with a bit of Outpost by Solstice Scents. It was a great combo for a cozy day. I’m in the USA, thank you!

  • “Where there is tea, there is paradise….” Indeed.
I have heard really good things about this fragrance for quite a while now. It’s been on my to sample list for quite some time now. I love all the notes in this one. As well as the story on St. Petersburg. Thanks for that, and the draw of course. In the US.

  • I love the image of putting raspberry preserves in tea, I’ll have to try it at home! I loved this evocative review, it makes me think about the magic of scent and its ability to transport us somewhere and somewhen else. This holiday I will be wearing mitsouko, there’s something so cozy to me about the spiced fruit and oakmoss. USA here.

  • I liked Olya’s description of the Christmas time in Moscow and provided a unique background to Masque Milano Russian Tea fragrance in light of the Russian black tea. For the holiday season, I have been rocking a gift from my wife, Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka cologne intense.
    Merry Christmas from Maryland, US.

  • I have sampled many of their fragrances and I do think Russian Tea is one of the best. It’s a great choice for the snowy weather currently here in Helsinki. St Petersburg is a beautiful city. No matter how many times I visit, there is always more to discover! Thank for the draw, I live in Finland.

Gorgeous review Olya! What I enjoyed most about Olya’s Christmas Eve memories is her description of large gatherings during her childhood days and how a plethora of mandarin oranges decorating the holiday dining table all day marked the holidays in such a specific manner. The mingling of the mandarins with the fresh fir of the Christmas tree just sounds so perfectly festive and nostalgic, at once youthful and traditional, that I can’t wait to try it.

I’m wearing a lot of different perfumes this holiday season but the two that read the most Christmas-y to me are TRNP Magus and Prissana Ma Nishtana – both holy and evocative of celebrating the season, both with roots in very different ancient peoples and traditions. And of course, both utterly lovely. I live in the US.

  • I loved the picture of St Petersburg that the review brought to mind, and the scene of the cozy bookstore. I haven’t yet had a chance to visit Russia. This holiday I’ve been wearing some Amouage samples and Ray-Flection and Dolceacqua by Masque Milano – I would love to add Russian Tea to my collection. Happy Holidays from MA, USA!

I appreciate hearing about the tradition around tea in Russia. I always figured wgat we called Russian tea in the South was so-called because Russia sounded exotic. It’s black tea with orange juice and cloves and it’s served cold (because it’s hot down here). I’m in coastal Virginia which isn’t a tropical zone, but it feels that way currently. I think I’ll be using up the rest of my Mugler Aura Sensuelle sample.
