French artisanal perfumer/photographer Christèle Jacquemin is an adventurous traveler with a keen eye for subtleties – in particular, for those moments which signify a departure or passage from one emotional journey to another. As a visual artist, physical-geographic context figures prominently, often echoing an internal landscape. Such is the case with her new release Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment, which was inspired by several wintry weeks spent in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, at the high mountain commune known as La Foux-d’Allos: its name means “narrow gorges” in the Occitan dialect. Christèle was filled with hope for an unconditional love to assure a stable footing along her path. While she has chosen to quote Virginia Woolf (“There is a virgin forest in each; a snowfield where even the print of birds’ feet is unknown.”), I both am in accord and have my own impressions, based upon the olfactory materials which make themselves known in Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment:

Care selve, ombre beate, vengo in traccia del mio cor! ~ attributed to Belisario Valeriani (aria by G.F.Händel)

Beloved forests, blessed shadows! I come in search of my heart!

Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment evokes the stillness of those steep alpines blanketed in snow, peppered liberally with the needles of its native larch, spruce and fir: in fact, La Foux-d’Allos comprises 1,869 hectares of woods and forests which entice off-the-beaten-path skiers in the winter and mountain-enthusiast hikers during summer months. The Verdon cuts through an immense limestone canyon known as the Grand Canyon of Verdon; there are several estuaries, lakes and ponds teeming with life.

I am enthralled by the perfumer’s elegant restraint and hyper-realism in the presence of the powerful aromatics which she employs. Although Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment is floating in terpene-rich elements, I never feel overwhelmed by what could have been a medicinal disaster in the hands of someone less skilled in sleight-of-hand. Larch essential oil is potent stuff – piney and sylvan, it evokes fresh mountain air; black spruce becomes warm and dry with time, balsamic and airy.

A wisp of elemi, when it encounters white sage – could potentially produce an astringent effect, but they are so beautifully balanced as the lemon-peppery resin’s sweet green undertone meets the rosemary-redolent cineoles of cooling white sage. It’s a lovely dance. Rock, aka sea fennel, possesses aniselike facets without the overt sweetness; it displays a carroty aspect tinged with lemon as well. Bay leaf is a heavy-hitting material, sweet, rich, spicy and loaded with terpenes; it requires diligent dosing otherwise it will drown out quieter fragrant components, which Christèle never permits. With Sichuan pepper as a top note, complexity is built-in: citrus, spice and exotic floral tones all contribute their fleeting voices while intimating a whisper of pine. The base marries unctuous silvery orris concrete with sweet, animalic leathery styrax for a truly refined finish.

Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment is one of those contemplative, thoughtful beauties that doesn’t feel the need to shout on your skin: fresh, alpine, airy, salty and resinous in the same breath. It intones the purity of unconditional love.

Let us join the perfumer in her invitation to “abandon the abysses and gently awaken to the giddiness of love.”

Notes: orris butter, bay leaf, rock fennel (criste marine), elemi, larch needles, black spruce needles, Sichuan pepper, white sage, styrax

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • I accept the perfumer’s invitation to, “abandon the abysses and gently awaken to the giddiness of love.” US

  • Starlit12 says:

Enlightenment sounds delightful with its gentle orris and the blend of citrus and green undertones, with a subdued, modest and calming trail from the skin.
I also love how Ida inserts small pieces from opera libretti. It truly gives the article a further touch of artistry.

  • If I hadn’t already be convinced by Ida’s review to accept Christele Jaquemin’s invitation. I would have been with its visual. Both fragrance and pictures sems to be perfect interpretation of pure and unconditional love. From France – EU.

I love how Christele Jacquemin is using very unusual notes and combination of accords. This one cached my attention with snowy pines…

  • Dubaiscents says:

Another beautiful review Ida! I am so enamored of this scent and you capture it all so perfectly through all of its twists and turns. You are right about how a lesser artist would not have been able to manage these strong notes so well. Enlightenment was such a wonderful surprise to me. Thanks for the draw. I’d adore a bottle. US

  • The fabulous details, intriguing information and beautiful photos spark my interest based upon Ida’s review of Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Love love love. Enlightenment sounds like such a unique scent. Something for you to contemplate alone. Not trying to seduce. I think I would love this. I am in the US

  • The list of notes for Enlightenment is fascinating. I’m quite sure I’ve never encountered larch needles, black spruce needles or rock fennel in fragrances before. As Ida suggests, it sounds very arboreal and primal but with masterful blending that makes it wearable. I would love to try this. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I absolutely love the idea of a snow inspired scene. We often get tropical themes but rarely the beauty of icy climes. And as a visual artist myself, I truly appreciate the subtle hand. In maryland.

  • Really liked this part about the perfume being: ‘one of those contemplative, thoughtful beauties that doesn’t feel the need to shout on your skin: fresh, alpine, airy, salty and resinous in the same breath. It intones the purity of unconditional love.’

I am in the EU. Thanks.

  • This sounds very contemplative. I am always interested in another forestry fragrance, and theVirginia Woolf and Handel quotes add an extra layer of intrigue and quietness. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • RiccardoC says:

I love the idea of a perfume that reminds Alps and snowy forest…also love the components: fir, elemi, sage and so on.
    Another great review on cafleurebon.
Would really like to try this one and will be fore sure at their stand at esxcence.

  • Right now I can’t imagine how Styrax sits in a fresh and airy scent. But I trust Christèle, since I am so convinced by Impermanence, which I acquainted after sampling despite it doesn’t fit my usual taste. So I’m curious. I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • Ida’s masterfully written article convinced me that Enlightenment must be added to my list of perfumes to try. The new fragrance of Christèle Jacquemin comprises fascinating notes and accords, which I have not yet encountered. I am completely drawn to the notion of capturing alpine air in the bottle.
    I live in the EU.

Notes: orris butter, bay leaf, rock fennel (criste marine), elemi, larch needles, black spruce needles, Sichuan pepper, white sage, styrax. A beautiful description by Ida really intrigued by notes especially Sichuan pepper, sage and elemi a house that I have got no experience with. Thanks a million from the UK

A wonderful description by Ida has piqued my interest in this and I am loving the notes especially Spices and fennel in particular. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • NituNicolae says:

Earthy, woody, salty and resinous are an interesting description of what I would consider a “hiking” fragrance. One where you yourself smell like the surroundings. Very detailed description of an enigmatic scent. Thank you for this opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • Enlightenment sounds like a beautiful fragrance to spritz during a morning walk through a forest after a snowfall. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment seems so terpene- heavy but I like what Ida says about it, that it’s an elegant perfume despite the pine and resinous richness. Ida is so right that in less experienced hands, these notes could have created a medicinal disaster. I like such notes and am curious as to how Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment smells. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

The word Alpine got me!! Several of these notes I am not familiar with. I am happy this didn’t turn into a medicinal disaster (yes I’ve smelled a few of those which shall be nameless). Ida has such a way with words. Beautiful. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Thaks for the review Ida!

I am sitting here trying to cope with intense summer heat and reading your article I was getting me seriously interested in Enlightenment.
Your description of a fresh, alpine, airy, salty fragrance sounds absolutely amazing to me right now. What I wouldn’t give to have that feeling right now!

I have sampled Memory Lane and look forward to trying Meanderig Soul soon. I absolutely love the stories Christèle is telling through her perfumes. I hope to be able to try Enlightenment soon as well!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Enlightenment sounds like a beautiful addition to my new love of realistic, outdoorsy fragrances as a departure from my gorgeous yet bold white flower loves. Offbeat secondary reason I’m intrigued – my name is Christine and her name is Christele. Silly reason but true. I live in NY.

  • AleksCipri says:

Christèle Jacquemin is a true artist. I tried several fragrances from her and they are all so unique and inspiring. Enlightenment sounds amazing. I love fragrances that evoke cold mountain air. I also like the combination with Sichuan pepper and resins. Ida’s review is very intriguing but there is one thing I know about this fragrance….it will not be what I expect from the notes and her review. Christèle always surprises me. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I have never been to the alpines so this fragrance sounds very appealing. Did not expect the Sichuan pepper note or styrax and it sounds amazing. I live in CA, USA

  • liberation says:

I am curious about the hyper-realistic approach for representation of untouched areas while using some nice and strong notes. Austria

  • Nice review Ida! I think Mme. Jaquemin is doing an amazing job: Memory Lane ,among the others perfumes she created, is great!. Now she takes us to the Alpes, at the high mountain, to evoke the stillness of the snow in the hills, with the green needles of its native flora. She does it with elegance restrain, and hyper-realism (as her photographs) even all the scent is rich in terpene elements : no overwhelming at all : elemi, white sage, rosemary, fennel, bay leaves… great greens restrained! Amazing finish with orris with sweet and animalic leathery styrax. Great in our skin: I would love to try! I live in Spain, EU.

  • Giorgia295 says:

I love Christele creations and she a true artist at 360 love how she combine photography, travel and perfumery in a unique concept. Greetings from Italy

  • I don’t think I have anything like this in my collection. It doesn’t sound fresh in the way we normally think of it in perfumery, the rock fennel note is super interesting to me. USA

  • Love, love the beautiful photos that conjure the universe of winter’s elegant restraint

I live in Portugal. No snow here

  • what caought my attention is how Ida underlines the skillful touch of Christele when she employs various elements in creating her fragrances. as to Enlightenment, I am always curious about winter inspired fragrances.
    I am living in EU.

  • wandering_nose says:

I like the way Ida conveys the contemplative mood which emanates from Christèle Jacquemin’s fragrances. Enlightenment seems to be another masterpiece, with notes thoughtfully employed to take the wearer on a journey inside themselves. Nature loves us humans unconditionally, therefore we should treat it better… I am ready to join the perfumer’s invite to “abandon the abysses and gently awaken to the giddiness of love”. Adore the notes and would love to experience Enlightenment on my skin. Thank you from Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Very good article. Enlightenment sounds very nice, interesting and unique from the base of the notes. Thank you. I live in Europe.

  • Enlightenment sounds like such a unique combination of notes. It sounds like a fragrance to experience that would make you think and be introspective. Sounds like a stand alone experience.

I’m interested about Ida’s review of Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment because of how goes into such detail of the creative and unique notes and facets this fragrance possesses. Fresh, airy, alpine, salty, resinous, and very unique. I am from the USA.

  • megabass99 says:

Love that she took inspiration from where she grew up and gave us a vivid picture of what the sights and smells she experienced .. awesome stuff !

  • The concept behind the fragrance as described within this review sounds captivating! As a pine oriented fragrance enthusiast and someone drawn toward and intrigued by the seasonal outdoor aspect, the atmosphere depicted in this aroma sounds very appealing. I would appreciate being entered into the giveaway. Thanks! – John, IL, USA.

  • Ida
What an amazing article on Enlightenment by Christele jacqumin
A perfume that makes you fill stillness and recalls love sounds just beautiful

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful review Ida! What sparks your interest based upon Ida’s review of Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment is learning that the fragrance is inspired by a high mountain commune at the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence as well as an “internal landscape” that echoes the landscape – here a hope for unconditional love. The idea of such a stark physical landscape echoing and paired with such a hopeful and beautiful concept of warmth openness and heart sounds absolutely captivating. I live in the US.

  • Southirina says:

I simply cannot imagine how Christèle Jacquemin Enlightenment smell. I have enjoyed reading Ida’s review and it transport me in the middle of the deepest pine forest up in the heart of the mountains.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very interested in trying this fragrance (and all of Christele’s fragrance releases). I appreciate Ida’s insight and descriptiveness in regards to this fragrance. I truly want to see what certain ingredients in this are like, e.g. the larch and black spruce needles, the bay leaf, the rock fennel, and more. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Ida, this is a wonderful review—I loved the line “fresh, alpine, airy, salty and resinous in the same breath.” Your breakdown of the notes in this fragrance and how they’re deftly balanced is excellent. I’m still learning what many of these notes smell like in isolation; you described them in a way that’s easy to understand and that references more common notes I’m familiar with. I bet I’ll be able to use some of these descriptions to pick these notes out of other fragrances. I hope to smell this one someday.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Another great review Ida. Christèle Jacquemin always has unique ideas 🙂 I love her idea of the Enlightenment that reminds the Alps and snowy forests…also love the notes especially the white sage, larch needles, and styrax.
Would really love to try this one and will be fore sure of her stand at excellence. Greetings from Sarajevo 🙂

  • foreverscents says:

I don’t know I’ll ever be lucky to travel to the Alps, but this beautifully named fragrance, Enlightenment, might take me there. Oh, how I love pine and spruce notes. This sounds like a very pure and enlightening fragrance indeed.
    I live in the USA.

  • I enjoyed Idas review so much because to me unconditional love also has to be related to the forest or the mountains. I love what this perfume evokes and the realistic it is. “Fresh, alpine, airy, salty”, surely it is something I would love trying on my skin.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeup, Ida!

I love the restraint in the fragrance, which has been emulated in the writing style. I loved reading about how careful the perfumer has been with all these powerful terpenic scents, to create a wonderfully etheral fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA
