Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee Review (2021) + Flight of Adventure Giveaway

Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee

Sophie and Luc Gabriel, founders of The Different Company, saved Cherigan Paris from the ashes of time. Born in 1929 Cherigan Paris sadly didn’t survive the war, during its tenure, the house had a boutique on 120 Avenue des Champs-Elysées and a second store in Havana. You can see this connection revived in the perfume line with the new Or Des Îles, another favourite of mine, which captures a tropical feel, with creamy ylang ylang giving you this sensual Monoi sun oil smell. Vintage Fleurs de Tabac, that like Molinard Habanita was a perfume that masked the scent of cigarettes, making women smoking more acceptable. Cherigan Paris fragrances were also housed in Art Deco style glass with the original Chance in a stunning horseshoe bottle.

Cherigan founder Luc Gabriel with Imperial Blue, Vintage Chance

In 2023, Cherigan Paris relaunched Bleu Imperiale as Imperial Blue, a floral chypre with a splendid retro style flacon in a limited-edition of 1000 pieces. It’s a joy to have such care given to these lost classics. The line today, has a more updated feel, yet its bottle design gives you that Art Deco spirit with the font and design. Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee launched in 2021; yet it takes you back in time, fitting beautifully with the brand’s aesthetic and history, feeling like it has always been part of the historical 1920s-40s collection, with a nod to the original Havana boutique and the use of coffee.

Its also hard not to miss the word play and word play is a common thing here in Ireland, especially with the influence of post modern writers like James Joyce and Samuel Beckett, but its writer Flann O’Brien that’s a favourite of mine. His writing takes you on wildly winding adventures feeling almost surreal, yet knowing the people of this country, feels also rather hyper real. He’s also famous for a limerick that begins with “a pint of plain is your only man”, and it’s because of a plane in Limerick that we have Irish coffee.

Chef Joe Sheridan is credited as the inventor of the Irish coffee, which was seen as a high form of sophistication, an exotic mix of products and cultures. Foyens in Limerick, is hardly exotic, but it was the last stop to refuel before the long flight to America, the who’s who of the time would have stopped off there and stayed warm with one of these tipples for the long flight. The roaring twenties had brought glamour back to the world and more of the world was being seen through books and the silver screen. Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee really puts you back in that era, as you smell it, there’s something of that 40’s glamour and a dandyish feel to its rich creamy aromatic opulence.

Cardamom brings beautiful warmth to a musky creamy coffee. It’s a comforting blend of tonka bean, bergamot & cardamom, feeling bright and fresh before slowly growing darker and more roasted, tuning into an almost coffee lavender haze. The aromatic, spicy and creamy feel make me think of popular perfumes of the time. Think Guerlain Jicky but not as dirty and Caron Pour Un Homme de Caron, but not as powdery or sweet, rather Iris Coffee is darker with a very present musky creamy cardamom coffee note that makes it more contemporary, stretching through time, like it’s always been.

Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee review

Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee gets slowly smoother as it dries down. There’s a very clever interplay of creamy tonka bean and sandalwood with delicious bitter aromatics enhancing both scent profiles. Dry velvety iris adds a sense of luxury to the tonka bean and sandalwood, beautifully balanced feeling like a creamy foam texture sitting over this darker aromatic coffee warmth. Jasmine adds a  creamy white floral feel, tinged with a hint of green, giving a quiet sharp pinch and spiced whiskey warmth as the Irish coffee rolls down your throat. Iris Coffee is a clever composition to give that sensation, but it never feels boozy or ever too gourmand. The coffee here is used more as an aromatic, letting the creamy sandalwood and tonka bean opulence blend with jasmine and iris evoking almost like sensual furs wrapped around passengers on long haul flights. I find there’s something rather sensual about wearing it, that rich opulent feel, gives you a quiet luxury sensation of elegant material cut with clean lines, leaving you enrobed in a furry fluffy iris-sandalwood-muskiness with tonka bean which keeps you coming back to experience that rich creaminess. There’s a lovely complexity at play, the slow evolution as iris and tonka bean interact with each other is enchanting, the iris cools the ginger bread facets of tonka bean, making it feel tamed and drier, while tonka bean keeps the iris on the edge of velvety and powdery with more of its woody rooty facets  working the magic. A delicious flight of adventure.

Notes: Bergamot, Jasmine, Cardamom, Iris, Tonka Bean, Coffee, White Musk.

  • My interest was sparked when I read, “Think Guerlain Jicky but not as dirty and Caron Pour Un Homme de Caron, but not as powdery or sweet…”. US

  • Another great review, Jonathan. I look forward to your next.
I am sure that Irish Coffee is a lovely scent but as for the drink – I prefer my whiskey straight and coffee black.

  • This sounds like an expertly crafted fragrance. Also, kudos to JScentient for the amazing review and near-tangible description of the composition. As a fan of iris and tonka, I was excited to read about the interplay of the notes within Cherigan’s Iris Coffee. As JScentient mentioned, they play well with each other – rounding off certain components and highlighting others. Overall, it sounds like a wonderful fragrance and I would be delighted to try it. I have never heard of this house until now, but since they are apparently known for having a vintage edge, I need to check them out. Their site has lots of samples! Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Fantastic review of a masterpiece that Cherigan Paris crafted.
Iris Coffee extrait is something I must totally try. I am a huge fan of coffe as a drink and coffee based fragrances. I love the inspiration behind and how this fragrance has the 40s glamour on it.
A creamy coffee with cardamom and tonka bean, what else could I ask for?
I hope I win this one.
    USA here.

  • The fascinating and very unique notes really sparked my interest. I am a huge coffee fan and Paris fan so I just must love this composition full of harmony and perfection. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • karenruanox3 says:

I loved the way the notes were described. The creamy Tonka
Bean that mixes with a light and airy coffee note! Made me really want to try it. I live in NJ

  • I loved the video on Irish coffee, I will be making some this winter. Haven’t had one in ages. I am happy to hear it doesn’t go too gourmand. I’d love to win this and see why it was saved from the ashes. Thanks for the chance. USa.

  • I’m quite interested in the invitation for a historic sensual leap as the 40’s are alluring, moreover I’d prefer the contemporary feel that seems to have been accomplished especially through IRIS. Coffee is not my favorite aromatic for perfumes; actually, I never wore it. However, the review is intriguing by claiming Iris Coffee to be a flight of adventure… I would try it this winter in Bulgaria, EU.

  • “Cardamom brings beautiful warmth to a musky creamy coffee. It’s a comforting blend of tonka bean, bergamot & cardamom, feeling bright and fresh before slowly growing darker and more roasted, tuning into an almost coffee lavender haze.” This sparked my interest and this unusual combo! Also the picture is great. I’m from eu.

  • Two Iris giveaways in two days, thank you! Coffee and Iris are some of my favorite notes, Tonka Bean and Cardamom are lovely as well. I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Of all the pairings in the world, I wasn’t expecting coffee and iris :). But luckily, in Iris Coffee it serves only as an aromatic touch, which should be interesting together with the earthiness and powdery aspect of iris.
I’m a bit of a fool when it comes to things long gone, and these revivals of old perfume houses seem such a great thing to me.
    I’m in EU.

  • I like The Different Company as a brand and I think they’ll do good things here too!
Iris Coffee sounds very nice with descriptions like lavender coffee and I also feel that in general the iris adds a sense of luxury and a buttery-ness to perfumes.
    I’m in the EU.

  • Pleasantly surprised to see my favorite author, of all people, mentioned here, of all places! And I’m fond of Irish coffee, with or without the coffee. This sounds right up my alley.
    (Greetings from the USA!)

  • Nice very nice! Definitely an original perfume. Here coffee is not the only protagonist, cardamom, iris, tonka bean, bergamot dance together and the result seems extraordinary. Not the usual gourmand …..
    Linda, EU

  • Nice review! I love that the Gabriel´s brought back to life a brand of Cherignan, an epitome of elegant, vintage and modern at the same time, totally French and Art Deco perfumes. Besides the updated historical scents such as Fleurs de Tabac and Blue Imperial, they launched new ones that share the same adn of vintage not old, elegant and accessible with 90% natural ingredients. Iris Coffee (nice word play with Irish) brings a rich creamy musky aromatic and opulent coffee what as irish coffee drink meant at that time. Confort in a bittersweet way: the cardamom, bergamot opening to the creamy tonka and sandalwood base while the jasmine and iris interact with the other notes. As you say a “40’s glamour and a dandyish feel”. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Patricia R. says:

A stream of consciusness is incited at this end: sleekness, iris, coffee, vintage, Irish cream, lavender haze, flight, horizon, Irish ingenuity, 40s glamour…. The design of the bottle and the colour exudes pure quality and my senses call for this.

    I live in Slovakia

  • Thanks for the review, Jonathan! I don’t drink coffee or whiskey anymore but I sure do love the way they smell. I can imagine the warmth and sweetness of coffee and tonka. A perfect scent for fall and winter and I’d love to try it! New Jersey, USA

  • whimsical diva says:

I loved the description of the cardamom coffee notes. Makes me think of middle eastern coffee shops where cardamom is inescapable.

I’d love to enter the draw. I live in California

  • I always enjoy learning about different notes, noses, houses, inspirations, which CFB did so well. I am glad to find that Cherigan was revived and will continue to create scents that continue the brand and history as I wonder what perfume smelled like in the past, and how it inspires current scents. And I do love a good Irish coffee (thanks for the link to a recipe). Iris Coffe has many notes that I love, and I am excited to try it. Flight of adventure indeed. Again, thank you for the thoughtful review and the draw. I’m in the us.

  • Coffee scents aren’t always my favorite, but wow, Cherigan Iris Coffee sounds so smart and glamorous. I appreciate the references to Caron Pour un Homme, a scent I love. Thanks for the review, and the giveaway!

  • Januarililjan says:

Coffee and iris, yum. Coffee and cardamom is like arabian Coffee smell. So good. EU.

  • Iris and Coffee sounds like a dream I would love to realize. Irish Coffee is a specialty I make at my family’s Irish pub (has to be Jameson or Paddy in a pinch!). I had no idea about the origins of said drink but I suppose I never thought to ask. Your descriptions of the notes and the juxtaposition of the history of Cherigan and Irish Coffee really made this review sort of three dimensional and I appreciate that. You had me at ‘word play’ which is a second language you come to appreciate when you tend bar. It’s part of the ‘craic’ or so I’m told. I’m in MA, USA

  • A coffee scent that isn’t too gourmand? Sounds sublime. I love a good gourmand, but I like to venture into other scent profiles, and coffee with sandlewood sounds like an easy move. In maryland

  • Yum. The interplay between tonka bean and sandalwood and bitter coffee notes with a velvety iris note sounds elegant and luscious. The floral jasmine note seems to add some femininity and verdancy to the composition. Iris Coffee sounds like a wonderful seasonless fragrance but seems well suited to the increasingly cooler fall months. I’m in the US.

  • Iris and coffee is surely a unique combination that I do not recall ever experiencing! I am very curious about this one! Thanks for the giveaway!

  • katyakotovskaya says:

As Beckett once wrote, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” In the world of perfumery, experimentation and exploration are key, and this review embodies that spirit beautifully. The sensory journey through Cherigan Iris Coffee is something I’d like to explore myself. Thanks for the opportunity! I live in EU.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds really interesting to me because I tend to think of a coffee note as being fairly modern. I also adore cardamom and can’t get enough of it in the colder months so this sounds very intriguing. I hadn’t heard of this house before. Thank you for the draw. From the US.

  • What sparked my interest in Iris Coffee is it’s clever composition that is not too gourmand – the coffee here is used more as an aromatic, letting the creamy sandalwood and tonka bean opulence blend with jasmine and iris evoking almost like sensual furs wrapped around passengers on long haul flights.
    Hugs from EU

  • I’m appealed by the aromatic, spicy and creamy feel of Cherigan Paris Iris Coffee extrait, it’s dark musky creamy cardamom coffee note and very clever interplay of creamy tonka bean and sandalwood with delicious bitter aromatics enhancing both scent profiles.
    EU

  • Coffee and cardamom with creamy white florals! Sounds amazing. I love that Jscentient described it as not being too gourmand as well, since so many coffee fragrances are very sweet. Would love to try this one! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I expected something called Irish Coffee to smell more gourmand than the review says. The description here is of a wonderful comforting autumn fragrance that walks the fine line between perfume and food. Not quite powdery but with the soft comfort of powder, not quite woody, but with notes of flower and wood….this sounds amazing. I also adore the retro vibe and the old world elegance filtered through something as familiar to me as Irish Coffee. And who can hate those bottles?

  • Reading about coffee-scented fragrances here, I’m always curious to find out what makes them unique, and how closely they hew to the scent of freshly-roasted dark roast coffee. The cardamom here isn’t a surprise; spice and coffee often works well together, and cardamom brings more complexity than most. But then “almost coffee lavender haze” caught me off guard. That sounds incredible. The combination of bitter aromatics, tonka, and sandalwood in the dry down is also intriguing, utilizing the namesake iris in a thoughtful way. Would love to try this.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway and the review, J.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest based on JScentient’s review of Iris Coffee is learning more about this legendary brand and their 1920s art deco bottle styling. I love how this fragrance is described in detail with the Irish Coffee, warm cardamom, with that creamy Sandalwood and Tonka drydown. I also love the note of coffee in fragrances, so I think I would really love and appreciate this fragrance. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Truly amazing house, too underrated.
I have Fleurs de Tabac and it’s out of this world.
    Riccardo EU, Italy

  • Bringing back to life old renowned brands is a great idea , 1920s is a time period I’m fascinated with.
Iris Coffee I can easily see on the hungry for adventures , and good music people from both 1920s, and 2020s .
It checks all the boxes, coffee, opulent feel , iris , sandalwood and iris would never get out of style. Iris Coffee is a night time , classy fragrance I’ll be happy to win
    Exciting giveaway

  • Really enjoyed JScentient take on the history of Iris Coffee and the video was fantastic too!
Love the different co. And admire them for bringing the house of Cherigan back.
Will check out Merz as I am in the USA

  • Cherigan could be one very old fragrance brand, with roots in between 1920s and 1940s, but their fragrances were ahead of their time, and no doubt there’s absolutely nothing dated in Iris Coffee.

“Chef Joe Sheridan is credited as the inventor of the Irish coffee, which was seen as a high form of sophistication, an exotic mix of products and cultures”

Being a classically trained in Paris Pastry Chef I can tell you with 100% certain that’s a myth. Such mixed drinks based on coffee, alcohol and cream topped do exist, well documented and not disputed by any of the best Culinary and Barista schools and institutions, for more than 200 years before Joe Sheridan. When I was a trainee, we were studying about different variations from early 1800s. One particular version of Irish Coffee is related to Joe Sheridan , there are a lot of other variations, which differ significantly from his version even though they are all ,for the most part based on whiskey + coffee + cream topped.
Let’s go back to Cherigan Iris Coffee ,the Art Deco feeling is appealing to me, smoky boozy ,ambery and some cardamom to make the whole experience even more enjoyable.
J WeAreScentient take on Iris Coffee in my Pastry Chef mind made me think of making Cardamom and Ginger Traybake Cake , drinking Irish Coffee , having fun, relishing the moment.
I don’t know Cherigan, but I know The Different Company sister brand , Majaïna Sin is my favorite
Appreciate learning about Cherigan, the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I became really interested the moment you mentioned that this has a similar vibe to Pour un Homme de Caron but less powdery. This is one of my favorite fragrances. I love to wear it when it’s raining or when I just want to feel cozy. I love that Iris Coffee starts off fresh and becomes darker with coffee as it dries down. Iris, cardamom, and coffee are 3 of my favorite notes, so this is right up my alley. I do prefer the natural smell of coffee, so it’s also good to see that the coffee is used as an aromatic, rather than in a gourmand way.
    I live in Illinois, USA.

  • Such a surprise, I was so not expecting to see there’s a fragrance inspired by the 40’s glamour with a dandyish feel , and Irish Coffee
Judging by J WeAreScentient impressions of Iris Coffee, I’m expecting posh iris fragrance, with Irish Coffee , rich creaminess and certain level of sophistication. I also like the the complexity, and the spiced whiskey warmth , like J WeAreScentient said , a delicious flight of adventure.
Learning about the history of Cherigan was fun , both the old and the new one.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d like to try something from Cherigan Paris. I like to famiarize myself with the collected works of the fragrance companies who existed long ago, became defunct, and then started up again, e.g. Maison Violet. I became very interested in trying Cherigan Iris Coffee when J WeAreScentient says: “Cherigan Iris Coffee really puts you back in that era, as you smell it, there’s something of that 40’s glamour and a dandyish feel to its rich creamy aromatic opulence.” I’ve actually become very fond of vintage-style fragrances, e.g. Chypre-Siam, and more, so I’d love to try Cherigan Iris Coffee. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Cherigan pays homage to a time period remembered for a lot of development, innovations, high fashion, and even wild parties. Along with the partying and dancing like Marilyn Monroe, fashion and drinks were rapidly evolving.
Iris Coffee is connected to Irish coffee , sandalwood, Joe Sheridan, Marilyn Monroe and joyous celebrations.
Thank you J WeAreScentient , and Cherigan
    USA

  • Iris Coffee sounds captivating, dark, sweet and creamy. Early 19th century inspired adventure.
I’m new to Cherigan , learning about this brand rich history, how Sophie and Luc Gabriel saved it truly sparked my interest. I know the duo for The Different Company , Bachmakov I like a lot.
Thanks to all involved, Cherigan, J WeAreScentient and Cafleurebon
    Germany

  • I know all current Cherigan fragrances, and if I have to rate my favorite ones
    1. Fiesta Habana
    2. The Purple Bar/Iris Coffee
    3. Fleurs de Tabac
Of course i can also easily chatter about current parent company “The Different Company” , and my favorite fragrances from their portfolio :
    1.Pure eVe / Majaïna Sin
    2.Aurore Nomade
    3.Une Nuit Magnetique
Iris Coffee is modern interpretation of a bygone, lavish era , done in a 21st century way. The two comparisons J WeAreScentient surprised me.
I can see very distant connection with Caron Pour Homme, but the lavender in Iris Coffee at least to me is short lived, unlike the Caron classic where its the main player on the field.
I don’t know about Jicky either. I fully agree with one other thing J WeAreScentient said , Iris Coffee is way more modern and up to date compared to Caron Pour Homme and especially Jicky. I also don’t get jasmine at all.
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • J Wearescentient took us to a journey to 1920s, and the way people were having the times of their life. I wish I was able to hop in the Chef and Marilyn Monroe picture.
I love Irish Coffee, and iris and I think Iris Coffee a fragrance i’d enjoy a lot.
The one Cherigan fragrance i know is The Purple Bar, I sampled it because of Emmanuelle Varron review , sensual resinous fragrance with a lot of cinnamon.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Amazing mix of cultures to bring us this super interesting fragrance.

I love the use of cardamom, coffee and iris in this fragrance, to create a wonderful orchestration between the notes. I do enjoy that this fragrance is not an intensely boozy or gourmandish fragrance.

I’m glad that there are people reviving these lost fragrances.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m a tonka freak! Cardamom is my 2nd kink. Last but not least white musk aww. PS. I’m based in Poland
