Catherine Omai Contagious Review (Catherine Omai) 2019+ Home is Where the Heart is Draw

One of the brightest new stars at Pitti Fragranze 2019 was Catherine Omai, a classically trained perfumer from Nigeria who makes her home in London (the first African woman to exhibit at Pitti). Her debut fragrance, Contagious, is an ode to her homeland and the heart of its people. Contagious references Omai’s Nigerian heritage; bottle’s wrapping is a traditional, handcrafted fabric called Aso-Oke, used by the Yoruba people for special occasions.  A specially extracted oud is the centerpiece of Contagious, imbuing it with fireplace warmth, smokiness, and an unexpected, roasted nuttiness. If you could bottle the feeling of sitting near an ebbing fire, a feeling of safety and contentment warming the pit of your stomach, the feeling of home – you’d be close to way Catherine Omai Contagious smells.

Contagious is intended to be a fragrance that draws people in, according to Omai. And it achieves this goal. Its blend of childhood campfire notes and earthy woods and resins is warm, immediately accessible and addictive. It opens with a crackle of firewood and smoke, accompanied by an offbeat, subtle walnut note. It takes me a moment to recognize that the combination of smoke, dry kindling and tree nut aspects are all different characteristics of the oud, since none of its usual medicinal quality is present. Contagious could have stopped here and been content to remain a well-made, comforting woody oud, but it has other plans.

Catherine Omai Contagious moves into more sophisticated territory with the arrival of a generous dose of oakmoss that adds a chypre-like quality when it meets that earthy oud. Some heated, animalic labdanum joins in, raising the temperature of Contagious from waning fire to savannah in daylight. Sandalwood, with its touches of sandpapery powder, rounds out the fragrance and softens its edges. From this point on, Contagious remains linear. But while it is not a complicated fragrance, Contagious demonstrates that only a few well-chosen notes, good-quality ingredients can turn into something delicious in the hands of a perfumer with heart.

Cozy, toasty, comforting as glowing embers in a in midwinter fireplace, with just a hint of faraway, Contagious is perfect for days when you want a blanket wrapped around your soul. It is one of my top ten fragrances of 2019.

Notes: Sandalwood, oud, oakmoss, ambergris, labdanum.

  • I appreciated Lauryn’s highlighting of the packaging, as well as her breakdown of the notes, and how the notes will blend so well, as well as her descriptiveness (i.e., ‘It opens with a crackle of firewood and smoke, accompanied by an offbeat, subtle walnut note.’). I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I liked the feeling of home, sitting around and ebbing fire, and the roasted nutty aroma.
Would love to try a sample. USA

  • Thank you Lauryn and a very hearty thank you to Catherine!
This perfume sounds absolutely amazing. Smoke notes along with woody notes and oud – what a perfect winter or summer evening scent. Through this olfactory experience, and the gorgeous Yoruba bottle wrapping, we get to experience a bit of Catherine’s homeland, which is the essence of perfumery voyage, no? This perfume is a must try for me, it sounds ever so wonderful. Great review Lauryn, you really brought the fragrance to my nose throughout.

  • These notes sound incredible: Sandalwood, oud, oakmoss, ambergris, labdanum. I love all but oakmoss but here it might balance the fragrance. I adore oud frags and wonder if this is a barnyard animalic oud. Mixed with salty ambergris. Interesting. And a little sweet smoothness from the labdanum. I would love to smell this. Congrats to the perfumer for breaking down walls bringing an Africa to us. I’m in the U.S.A.

  • African culture is so beautiful and judging from Lauryn’s review, Contagious captures that fiery soulfulness and glow that exudes from the faces of people living there. I’m also taken aback by the simplicity of the composition, but I think it was necessary in order for the subtleties of the oud to be more pronounced. Ever since I’ve started reading about Catherine Omai and her work, my curiosity has gotten greater and greater. Thanks Lauryn for the great, succinct review! I’m in Oregon, USA.

  • Catherine’s packaging leaves you with a small souvenir all by itself. I like that she uses a traditional fabric weave for special occasions. How do you bottle up the safe feelings of home, the contentment we find there, in addition to the feeling of a fire? I can hardly walk away from a good fire pit or fireplace. I’m intrigued and curious with this one.

  • Must be good if this is one of your top ten fragrances of 2019 at Cafleurebon! Smoky, toasty oud notes by a perfumer with heart sounds fantastic. Would love to sample this. Thanks for the draw. Regards from Boston USA.

I’m definitely loving the notes. But, I really just want to sample fragrance because of its references to Nigeria and the Yoruba people.

  • It’s so fascinating that a scent can transport you to a place you’ve never visited. I didn’t have a fireplace but I still got a feeling of comfort and peace and belonging from sitting around a fire and sharing company with the people closest to you in the whole world. I wish Ms. Omai the best. We need more varied perspectives in everything and I can’t wait to see what else she does

  • Sounds indeed like a comfort scent. Judging by the composition, it seems like this fragrance is made entirely out of base notes, which I find particularly interesting. I am from the EU.

Love to try this fireplace warmth, smokiness, and an unexpected, roasted nuttiness, if you look at the kids on the picture you see happiness and I expect the scent to bring this joy as well. Living in the EU

  • Intrigued by the notes of Sandalwood and Oud loved Lauryns description about when you want a blanket wrapped around your soul. From EU United Kingdom Cheers

  • Really fascinated by the warm and cozy description and especially Sandalwood, Oud, ambergris, oakmoss and labdanum. Thank you from EU UK

I like how Lauryn made the point that a fragrance doesn’t have to be complicated to be good. She seems to almost contradict herself when she describes how Contagious moves from being a woody oud into something more sophisticated. But that makes me want to sample the fragrance all the more. I am in the US.

  • This review nicely conveyed the warmth of this fragrance that includes many notes I love, including ambergris and sandalwood. Catherine’s concept sounds wonderful and I would love to try her creations. In the USA.

  • So glad to hear that she is bringing some diversity to Pitti Fragranze. So much of the fragrance world seems homogeneous. The scent itself sounds absolutely lovely. And I love the thought of a perfume with the goal of drawing people in. I am in the US and would love to try this.

  • This seems to be a bit different from other perfumers. I love the bottle with the special cloth. Although i have sometimes problems with oud, i would love to sample this scent. I live in Germany

  • yep, got me with “campfire notes”. with chypre & ambergris! i definitely need to try it on—grateful in california

This fragrance sounds amazing and I’d definitely like to try it. I also feel it’s important to support African perfumers in an industry dominated by European folks. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • “comforting woody oud” is everyhing I need right now! Also the depicted “at home” felling makes willing to give it a try

Lauryn, great review of Contagious. This fragrance sounds amazing to me based on the smoky/resinous note breakdown on this one. I am from the USA.

  • This fragrance impressed me, I like everything, the story of the creator, the warm notes of winter and above all the result. When a perfume is created with love it is felt ….. is Contagious.

  • Lauryn’s wonderfully written review gave me flashbacks of sitting around a campfire with good friends back in the day 🙂 For some weird reason, this also evoked memories of the actual wood crackling as it burnt. This must smell delectable. Thank you for the review and the giveaway. I’m in USA

  • Notes are nice blend of African ingredients, I hope this perfume has
Alot of resins since Nigeria has alot of
    Myrr and frankincense. USA

  • The description seems very personal and touching. The sentence “Contagious is perfect for days when you want a blanket wrapped around your soul” hits exactly to the point.

  • “raising the temperature of Contagious from waning fire to savannah in daylight” –> That’s so beautifully said… and really makes me want to try it. Plus, when i read “roasted nutiness” i’m even more intrigued! Thank you Lauryn for the review. I’m in EU.

  • I work in hospice with children who are grieving. We talk about scent and more than once a child has said a roaring fire pit brings back memories of a lost dad. I have been looking for a fragrance to share with the children with a smoky note and the added cozy note make this one a must sniff. These children need a blanket wrapped around their souls more than anyone I know. I live in New York.

I love this line “If you could bottle the feeling of sitting near an ebbing fire, a feeling of safety and contentment warming the pit of your stomach, the feeling of home – you’d be close to way Catherine Omai Contagious smells.” I always associate the scent of a wood fire with home so I know I would love this one. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Thanks, Lauryn, for describing the perfume so vividly and for presenting a perfume house which for me was unknown until now.

    Kind regards from The Netherlands!

Sinc I missed Pitti last year, it would be such a great possibility to test this perfume. For me, everything with labdanum sounds interesting so this warm blanket of fragrance for the soul satisfaction is now on my wish list. I am in Germany, thanks!

  • I absolutely loved Lauryn’s review! I love the packaging and note description. I am intrigued by the smokiness and nuttiness of the fragrance. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

Best part: “Contagious demonstrates that only a few well-chosen notes, good-quality ingredients can turn into something delicious in the hands of a perfumer with heart.”
I have not been this intrigued with an African perfume line since African Aromatics (though that Nose was Caucasian South African) who used predominately African sourced raw materials & aromatics whenever possible; yet, I am also intrigued by what would be seemingly be the inverse (a Nigerian born perfumer, living in the UK). I applaud Ms Omai for being the first African AMerican woman to show at this exhibition!
This sounds like something along the lines of primal profundity and with sophisticated depth that dances to wild rhythms with abandon…just like myself.
    smell swell & be well,

PS: Thanks for the great article Lauryn I love your style <3
