Zoom in – the late-night phone call you shouldn’t answer but do anyway. The nervous clip of an earring, the half-whispered “I’ll be there.” Red-lacquered nails, flicking open the clutch. That small, chaotically magical gesture of feeling through the purse – fingertips brushing keys, secrets, the silk scarf – until… there. They land on it. The lipstick. The click of the cap slices the silence. The mirror doesn’t lie: the mouth curves into a crimson-colored smile. One last glance. One deep breath. The final sip from the (now) lipstick-stained champagne glass, left on the edge of the bar. That feeling of something deliciously naughty that’s about to happen.

Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen and Nicoleta Tomsa

Michelyn and Nicoleta

And now, that feeling… has a scent. Lipstick Queen – the first collaboration between perfumer Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes and co-creative directors Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen and  Senior Editor Nicoleta Tomșa – was created to celebrate ÇaFleureBon’s 15th Anniversary. And trust us – This Queen brings a very different energy to the room.

This is the whisper of Old Hollywood caught in a very 2025 kiss. We wanted the scent of lipstick on warm skin after a night out  – bold, modern, confident  – but also infused with the glamour of divas (and divos). The main inspiration personified? Dame Elizabeth Taylor – not just one of the most iconic actresses of her time but a symbol of fierce femininity and resiliency.

The idea for this perfume first started swirling around us during that surreal first year of the pandemic – somewhere between existential dread and Zoom calls we started talking about our ridiculously large lipstick collections and what this deceptively innocent object means to us. Michelyn put it best: “I even wear lipstick to get the mail.” The classic bullet, of course.

Michelyn’s lip imprint

The lipstick effect goes beyond its sociological meaning – though we’re still witnessing it in real time, as the beauty industry continues to thrive even among the turmoil. A lipstick is a personal statement. A weapon of seduction. Or can be self-therapy in a tube. A silent rebellion, even worn underneath a mask. A new way to say – I’ve got this! The quick swipe before a first date. The mirrored elevator gesture before a big meeting. Even that casual morning gloss on a stay-at-home day. It’s all about the ritual composed of those little gestures. A signal that things are under control. A mark of resilience, self-love, seduction – and the unapologetic reclaiming of power. No matter what. Because sometimes, all it takes is a little pigment on your lips to remind the world (and yourself) exactly who you are.

Of course, we didn’t want CaFleureBon X Darren Alan Perfumes Lipstick Queen to smell literal – or overly cosmetic. It’s not about mimicking the scent of lipstick. It’s about bottling the feeling lipstick gives you. We imagined the muskiness of skin still warm from dancing, the aura of a forgotten lipstick tube in a clutch, the soft rustle of  the night-out dress, and the click-clack of stiletto heels echoing on midnight asphalt. That buzz. That moment. That diva-fatale energy – distilled into scent. Expression. Self-confidence. Seduction. And that extra sprinkle of pizzazz.

And it was not until this year that the stars properly aligned to bring the vision to life. In comes Mr. Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes:

Darren Alan Of Darren Alan Perfumes

Darren Alan of Darren Alan Perfumes

ÇaFleureBon Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen and Sr. Editor Nicoleta Tomsa asked me to create something different than the typical waxy lipstick scent of the ubiquitous inside of a cosmetic bag”. To achieve this, I nestled the lipstick accord within a bed of sensual animalic musks to elicit the fantasy of a sexy diva, clad only in lipstick and perfume.”

Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together.”-Elizabeth Taylor.

And this is a scent that acts exactly like that: an instant pick me up, a dose of glamour-to-go, there for you, anytime you need to reset your mood to DIVA/DIVO status.

Putting Lipstick Queen on the skin feels like unfolding a naughty little note (the kind inconspicuously slipped into a coat pocket) reading between the lines and discovering the sultry imprint of a kiss. The opening? Parma violets flicker like neon against a rain-slick street. A black limousine stops on the slippery pavement and there she goes, all click of the heels and lipstick.

Opulent flower bouquets bloom around her, with roses and jasmine turned white by the flashes of the paparazzi, the mood turns all bright with heliotrope and lily of the valley. Soon after, vanilla adds a sweet pout before things get sultry. Patchouli brings in that late-night heat, and orris and the civet accord leave little to the imagination. The scent of hot skin, naked under sheets, a lipstick-stained cigarette smoldering in the ashtray, with the curtains marked now by the lingering traces of musks. A neo-vintage scent that speaks of beautiful abandon, in the perfect dosage of retro, sexy, and carnal.

  • I have a special love for the Hollywood Divas of yesteryear! (I’m 52 and quite the classic film fan) The description is remarkable! I can smell the wet asphalt and hear the click of cameras! I simply must smell this perfume!

OH MY GOODNESS! Michelyn, Nicoleta and Darren Alan…this sounds like a match made in Perfume Heaven. I am a fan of Darren’s creations…and with the creative direction of Michelyn and Nicoleta…it sounds like something to die for.
While the notes speak volumes, I seem to really get an understanding of this creation based on the inspiration:

“Putting Lipstick Queen on the skin feels like unfolding a naughty little note (the kind inconspicuously slipped into a coat pocket) reading between the lines and discovering the sultry imprint of a kiss.”

I’m looking forward to the experience this 15th Anniversary Queen creation has to offer.

  • I’m entering the giveaway because I have loved every Darren Alan perfume I’ve tried! And the notes for this one sound very appealing! And I have a soft spot for vintage!

  • DAISY PEREZ says:

This article totally nails the emotional power of lipstick – not just as makeup, but as a mood, a ritual, even a quiet form of rebellion. Love how it connects something so small and personal to bigger themes like resilience and self-expression. And the transition into the fragrance collab is super smooth – it’s not just about scent, it’s about capturing vibes. That “diva-fatale energy” line? Chef’s kiss. Feels like you’re not just putting on a product, you’re stepping into a whole mood.
This article reads like a love letter to old-school glamour with a modern wink—equal parts sultry and poetic. “Clad only in lipstick and perfume”? Say less. You can feel the drama in every note description, like you’re stepping into a noir film in heels and confidence. The Parma violet opening and that smoky, musky dry-down? Total transformation in a bottle. Honestly, if a scent could strut, Lipstick Queen would be doing it in stilettos down a rain-slick boulevard.

  • I’ve been really intrigued by Darren’s creations, and the different Queen collabs on Cafleurebon! Lipstick queen sounds like a developed, punchier version of a lipstick scent and would be interested to see how it wears in the sun or a dark night.

  • WildPinkPony says:

Something about the beauty of real lipstick from a tube, that was just simply that. Needing to be reapplied when it gets wiped off or leaves marks, just that a lipstick memory. Now taking that classic and the perfume, just a wonderful connection. I love how well explained the combo is expressed and what I don’t want it to be is also mentioned. Making it sound like a scent worth wearing.

  • Froaderick says:

Elizabeth Taylor was exactly who came to mind as the personification of a lipstick queen! Bold, confident and sure-footed in stilettos or otherwise. Very intrigued by the scent profile that doesn’t just give you a full-on lipstick scent but captures the mood described. It’s interesting how lipstick and fragrance intertwine as such an individualized medium of expression, which i honestly had not thought of until seeing this. Can’t wait to see (well, sniff) how this translates. Cheers from Ohio, USA! 🙂

  • As an avid lover of all things Darren Alan, this really has me excited. I love the creative direction of not taking a literal approach, but rather trying to capture the feeling that wearing lipstick can give you. The nods to Elizabeth Taylor and old Hollywood are much appreciated. If anyone is going to bottle the essence of old Hollywood, it would be Darren – he’s just so damn good at nailing that vintage sweet spot, while still making it his own unique work. I’d be honored to win, but I’m at least buying a 10ml to take a test drive. I live in NC, USA.

  • roxhas1cat says:

What could go wrong with this trio of talent. I love that it is how lipstick makes you feel and not necessarily a lipstick scent. That’s been done (I own a few). Maybe it would make me feel like I’m wearing a stiletto heel (never have as they are not comfortable). I love that quote by Elizabeth Taylor (my Mom’s generation and her favorite actress). Thanks for the chance!! I love Darren’s Musc Moderne. USA.

  • Jenna Park says:

Being part of the old Hollywood scene must have been so exciting. I can imagine the elegant people and scene. Lipstick makes has the power to make us feel powerful and beautiful. The combination of old Hollywood and the feeling of a new emerging era was such an iconic time. I am very excited for this fragrance. I’m from Pennsylvania US

  • I am super excited for this! I am huge Darren Alan fan – he can do no wrong. What really stood out to me in Nicoleta’s review is that this collaboration doesn’t just capture the smell of lipstick – which has been done well by others already – but that it encompasses the *feeling* of wearing lipstick. The thrill of boldness and that aura of a woman who commands attention. Conceptual scents are always so fascinating to me, and I cannot wait to get this on my skin. Thanks so much for the lovely review and giveaway chance! Also, happy 15th anniversary!!! Your blog has been my favorite since soon after you began.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

What a wonderful way to celebrate Cafleurebon’s 15th! I can’t think of a more beautiful note structure to have in something called Lipstick Queen. And what a collaboration! I must have this, at the very least I need to get my nose on a sample if available, but I would be willing to blind buy based solely on this review. I love that this was a work full of forethought and I’m sure it will be a hit. Congratulations on 15 years and hooray to this collaborative effort! I live in Oregon.

  • Ooh my goodness what a match made in the heaven, all of you together!! I definitely want to try this Queen. I’m a monthly subscriber to DA so I know he handles a floral, Chypre, and vintage Diva-esque glory Very well!
I often think of that ET quote too, I’ve got to add a bit of mascara also – not having two rows of eyelashes like her but yes. We can focus on the good stuff and save our own day when needed. I love this!
Located in the U.S. with fingers crossed!

  • I am delighted to hear that ÇaFleureBon collaborated with Darren Alan on a fragrance! As a lover of fragrances and lipstick, Lipstick Queen sounds amazing. I love how Nicoleta points out that wearing lipstick (or lip gloss) can be an act of self-love, seduction, or power. While I do love the scent of lipstick, I appreciate that Lipstick Queen was made to capture the feeling lipstick gives you. The opening of “parma violets that flicker like neon against a rain-slick street” makes me even more intrigued. Nicoleta’s final about Lipstick Queen being a tribute to queens of yesterday and today is perfect.

Thank you, Nicoleta, for your beautiful review, and thank you to Darren Alan Perfumes for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • teatreesoil says:

Congrats on the collaboration! The concept behind this perfume seems well executed, but also unfamiliar as someone who doesn’t wear makeup and doesn’t know many people who do (so I can’t relate to this particular feeling of “pulling yourself together” once you have a free face on). I would love to hear about the collaborative process (Nicoleta mentions receiving a sample and Michelyn evaluating 4 mods). Is it an iterative back and forth of slowly adjusting ratios? Is it more trying to align on the execution and what notes should be present?

  • Belladonna says:

Some of us love lipstick – that Liz Taylor quote says it all. It’s a simple object, yet carries a lifetime of memories. Darren Alan is a perfect perfumer to capture those moments! Beautifully written. Please don’t enter me in the drawing- I’m just going to get a bottle already

  • There hasn’t been fragrance of Darren’s that I haven’t found perfectly wearable. I love the idea of putting on the energy of old Hollywood Glamour!! ❤️

  • Ooooh. This sounds absolutely fabulous. Here is my favorite part of the review.
• rachel wiener says:

This sounds fantastic! I love that Alan paired the lipstick with animalics to make it different for other lipstick inspired scents. I also am drawn to modern perfumes that pay tribute to vintage fragrances and feeling. Would love to try this. In NY, NY

  • Ramses Perez says:

I’m very glad this is not more of the same but rather a re-imagining of the lipstick accord in fragrances is like. Rather than mimicking a scent you see a million times, they took the feeling of wearing lipstick and added a few extra supporting notes around it to make you feel like you’re the boss. A woman out on the town wearing lipstick and getting looks by prospective males is what Darren Alan wanted to show and by the looks of it, achieved. An innovative way indeed to do a lipstick fragrance. I’m located in the USA.

  • I have been looking for the ultimate lipstick fragrance and I love Darren Alan’s work! But a waxy lipstick cushioned in animalics – ciao bella! Sounds like the embodiment of a sultry woman.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

It’s the glint of a stiletto heel just before it disappears into the night. That dangerous click of a lipstick cap that dares the world to flinch. What draws me in is that “Lipstick Queen” doesn’t just aim to smell like lipstick—it aims to feel like her. That smoky, musky, violet-drenched whisper of confidence right before the chaos begins. Darren Alan, Michelyn, and Nicoleta bottled the moment—not the makeup bag. I live for that neo-vintage heat: civet, orris, costus? Say less. This sounds like Liz Taylor poured into a perfume bottle, kissed with danger and dressed in nothing but a smile and secrets. Sign me all the way up. I’m in the usa

  • Hollywood diva Elizabeth Taylor is the perfect muse for a lipstick perfume. And perfect for Cafleurebon anniversary. In maryland.

  • What a great way to mark your 15th anniversary CaFleureBon! Lipstick Queen sounds feminine, passionate, seductive and above all, celebratory. The variety and blending of floral notes is impressive. I’m so happy to see LOTV included since I feel it’s an underused note. The aldehydes and civet and musk accords reminds me of a great vintage perfume. MD, USA.

  • Nicoleta’s article intrigues me because it’s not just about a lipstick-scented perfume; it’s about bottling the feeling lipstick evokes: confidence, glamour, and a touch of rebellion. The inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor and the focus on the ritual of applying lipstick resonate deeply. Darren Alan’s approach of using animalic musks to evoke “a sexy diva, clad only in lipstick and perfume” sounds daring and unique, moving beyond a literal cosmetic scent. The description of the notes, from the neon violet opening to the sultry, musky dry down, paints a vivid and alluring picture of a fragrance that captures a powerful, sensual energy. I would love to experience Lipstick Queen!

My gratitude to Darren Alan for the generous giveaway. I reside in the northwest US.

  • carrie_earle says:

I like that this is described as the empowering feeling you get from lipstick not the scent of lipstick itself. Michelyn’s lip imprint is a nice touch. This collaboration sounds like it’s going to be fantastic and I’m sure it was fun to make too!

    Metro Detroit, Michigan – USA

  • Combining sensual skin musk with lipstick was such a fun idea! That slight cigarette note is also very intriguing. Rather than simply being a vintage inspired perfume, this really sounds more like what a scene from an old movie would actually smell like. I’ll have to sample something from Darren soon as his perfumes featured on the blog have really resonated with me. I am from New England, USA.

  • Lipstick Queen sounds so bold and uplifting. Spraying it on must be like spraying on an attitude of audacious strength and daring. I would love to smell the impression of shiny lacquer and clicking heels that this description conjures. In MA.

  • I like Darren Alan and I’m still looking for an orris scent for the collection. But could I be a sultry and sexy DIVA? Beyonce tells us that a diva is the female version of a hustler but I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. I’m in the USA

  • Sounds like a very interesting way to showcase the vintage and modern feelings of lipstick. The colorful writing style of the article really sets the scene as well. Sounds like a beautiful combination!
    <3 from nyc

  • Excited to see a makeup inspired scent. For me there can’t be enough of these. I do like that the scent is reaching to give the weare..the lipstick effect. I also like that it’s available in smaller bottles also.. liking forward to wearing Lipstick Queen. I live in the US

  • Alan is particularly good at this kind of vintage-styled fragrance, plus wrapping the “lipstick accord within a bed of sensual animalic musks” is a clever way of distinguishing Lipstick Queen from other fragrances doing this sort of thing without nearly as much subtlety. Also, the swirl of animalics and florals in this are sultry stuff. This sounds like the kind of statement fragrance folks will confidently reach for before that big date.

    I’m in the USA.

  • i’m so interested… i love the energy this evokes, which feels like a mix of strength, darkness, satiny flower petals, musk that your skin breathes life into. and i love the excitement for darren alan in the comments! it sounds like a thoughtfully considered fragrance and i really would love to try it. US. 🙂

  • I love Darren’s neo-classical approach to fragrances. The line about the fragrance being for those who live life on their terms really resonated with me.

  • wallygator88 says:

I would love to try this! The lipsticky smell of lipstick (iris/orris) is one that I enjoy immensely and find comforting.

    Cheers from WI, USA
