By Terry Délectation Splendide Review +Ambery Rose Draw

In late Autumn of 2017 Terry de Gunzburg quietly introduced her latest exclusive Eau de Pafum for Barneys New York, a sumptuous and spicy Oriental/Gourmand aptly named By Terry Délectation Splendide. Terry de Gunzburg takes her time developing perfumes for her By Terry fragrance line and her quiet, methodical, and exacting  creative process often results in perfumes that are an absolute joy to wear.

Best known as the former Creative Director for YSL Beauty, she is the genius behind Touche Éclat, the brush-on concealer-highlighter in a pen which revolutionized cosmetics in 1992. As a makeup artist she worked with photographers Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin. In the late 90s, Ms. de Gunzburg debuted her eponymous cosmetics and the By Terry Parfum perfume range are among my favorite luxury fragrances. (Ombre Mercure is in my all-time top ten). Her fragrances are some of the few blind-buys I do not hesitate to make, and her latest, By Terry Délectation Splendide is no exception.

By Terry’s Délectation Splendide is a semi-sweet, floral, and spicy fragrance inspired by Far Eastern sumptuous palace delicacies and Oriental spices. The luxurious scent blends sweet vanilla, warm tonka bean, and spicy patchouli to create a delectable fragrance that fairly jumps off the skin begging to be savored. Opening with nose-tingling notes of ginger and pepper back by citrus, By Terry Délectation Splendide is akin to that first sip of bright and bubbly ginger-ale.

The star of this show however is a smooth as silk tobacco note, wisps of a juicy berry scented rose, made gourmand by inclusion of tonka, vanilla, but kept spicy with cinnamon. The benzoin and musk create a cashmere-warm base and helps to keep the scent from straying too far into being a sweet tooth offering.

If Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille had a younger sister living the Boho life in the West Village, her name would be Délectation Splendide. She is young, vibrant, breathtakingly beautiful and maybe a bit flirty and frivolous, but underneath is the spirit of an old soul, deep, intriguing, and dying to be discovered. Currently exclusive to Barneys New York, I urge you to pop in and try her for yourself. You might just be as enchanted as I was.

Notes: ginger, lemon, pepper, anise, tobacco leaf, rose, tonka bean, benzoin, cinnamon, vanilla, musk, patchouli

Disclosure: The perfume and the opinions are my own.

I love all of Robert’s reviews but as far as this one? I surely wish I had a younger sister living the boho life in the West Village!!!

I wish I WAS the younger sister! Great review…I have been exploring tobacco fragrances the last year and recently decided I want to explore rose. I almost made a blind-buy on Terry’s perfumes recently on Gilt. Thank you for the chance!

  • Sounds great. Well done Robert. I haven’t tried any Terry fragrances
This will be nice to check out. Thanks

Robert’s description of the younger sister sounds a lot like me! I haven’t tried Terry’s fragrances, but would love to tey this one out!

  • I really like oriental perfumes so I will certainly try this when I get the chance. The tobacco note sounds interesting. Thanks for the review.

  • Wow this sounds amazing!! I tried a few of her scents [my favorite is The au Glacé] and loved them. I’m excited to hear about this one. I love the photos in this review, really well chosen, lovely <3 I love that she's being featured here, she deserves it.

  • Never heard of her, but I do know Touche Eclat. I love Tom Ford’s Vanilla Tobacco, so I would love to meet the younger more hip sister! Sometimes the Vanilla Tobacco is just a bit heavy for certain weather or occasions. The color is beautiful. Good to know that Robert thinks Terry’s fragrances are fine to do a blind buy, that’s quite a compliment. Again, a great article! I think I’ve just made my new years resolution…….ordering new fragrance samples every month! I am obviously not trying enough! Thanks. I live in the US.

I haven’t had the pleasure of trying any of TdG’s scents yet. This one particularly appeals, however – I love the way Robert sneaked in the mention of tobacco, one of my favorite scents, as an “oh, by the way” line. Sneaky devil!

  • Elizabeth T says:

Sounds beautiful, Robert! The rose and tobacco do sound like a joy to wear. Thank you for this review.

  • Gorgeous photos, they make me want to fall right into this scent. I’m curious to smell “warm tonka bean.” The past few weeks I have worn scents with tonka that turned acrid on my skin, at other times the note is delicious. Lovely review, and thank you for the perfumed thoughts it inspires.

This review inspires me to search out By Terry fragrances, a line I haven’t tried before. I definitely will look for this line when I visit New York in May. I love anything with benzoin, I also wish I lived a Boho life in the West Village.
    I live in the USA.

  • Tobacco Vanille’s Boho younger sister? Anise, cinnamon, ginger- yum! Sounds absolutely amazing. I am in the US.

  • I’ve never tried any of Terry’s fragrances, but Robert certainly makes it sound as though I have definitely been missing out on something. I would love to try this. Thanks for the draw. I’, in the USA

  • Oh my gosh, this sounds amazing! I love the idea of rose, tobacco, and cinnamon especially if it’s, as Robert says, “nose-tingling”. Thank you for the chance! I have not tried any ByTerry fragrances. I’m in the US.

  • This sounds delicious! Robert’s review of Délectation Splendide, likening to Tobacco Vanille’s younger sister – clenched it, I have to have this! Not scheduled to head to NY at this point but I would definitely stop in to try it.
Thank you for the chance to win this. I’ve not tried any By Terry fragrances but I will be looking for this one.
    I’min the US.

  • I tried to post yesterday, but my comment didn’t appear. I’m new to the site, so hopefully I’m not doing something wrong!

Rose scents are near and dear to my heart. I only recently became interested in perfumes, and one of my first surprises was discovering how much I enjoy rose in a perfume. I assumed that rose was boring, but I’m finding that I’m drawn to rose… whether it’s a main note or just a little bit added for sparkle.

I’m also a fan of ginger, though I haven’t found as many ginger-based scents.

This perfume sounds stunning – the ginger, anise, rose, and tobacco! Even if I don’t win, I hope to find a sample so I can give it a try.

I haven’t had the chance to try any By Terry fragrances, but now I’m intrigued! And, I live in the USA.

    Thanks!

  • If Ombre Mercure is in Robert’s all-time top 10 (!!!), then I must find a way to try it! I’ve never smelled any By Terry fragrances, but Delectation Splendide sounds delectable, indeed: I adore cinnamon (especially in the winter months), and if Robert can promise me an enduring tobacco note, I’m in. I live in the U.S.

  • Berries, Roses and Tonka Bean?? Yes Please Robert! The photos in this spread are splendid as well and highlight the imagery of this delectable sounding perfume! I have not tried a Terry fragrance yet, I am sad to say! Hope this is my first – I live in Maryland USA – thanks for this chance!
