BLUEHILL Fragrances Zest Review (Sandy Carr) + Summer’s Citrus Draw

BlUEHILLFRAGRANCES ZEST REVIEW

Boston area artisanal perfumer Sandy Carr shares classic New England enthusiasm for summer: precious nurturing time in the garden during the growing season, sun-and-sea-kissed skin relishing the out-of-doors, the leisure of the recently retired, where one’s choice of venture is just that. She is blessed to experience the best of both worlds – living near the natural reserve of the Blue Hills where one may hike year ‘round and still be a stone’s throw from Boston culture – and that sweet pleasure of an abode in Maine, where the wild ocean is cool all the year and the pace of life is considerably slower and more gracious.

Granted, a lifetime of very hard work has made this feasible – and Sandy is one of those folk whose joie de vivre and daily appreciation are palpable. This ebullience informs her latest composition entitled BLUEHILL Fragrances Zest; a textbook illustration of aromatic adventure presented as truth-in-advertising. She couldn’t have chosen a better four-letter descriptor if she tried…

Emile Vernon 1913, French, Young Woman by a Lemon Tree, Oil on Canvas

BLUEHILL Fragrances Zest began as the result of a client’s request for a refreshing eau de cologne type fragrance for their boutique –  which then translated into the perfumer’s quest for ‘a citrus which would stay’. Anyone familiar with citruses is aware of their lightning-speed longevity: the lower the molecular weight of a substance, the more fleeting it is. It has always been challenging to create an hesperidic fragrance which lingers upon the skin, which is why all the traditional eau de colognes are sprayed with abandon as they revive themselves and ourselves in the process. As her work progressed, Sandy became inspired: CITRUS!!!

BLUEHILL Fragrances Zest review

There are SO many citrus fruits, each one possessed of its own singular charm. Given their innate collective tang, it feels fitting that counterbalance and complement would follow upon their jovial heels. Employing sweet orange and neroli contributes a certain measure of lusciousness to offset the effusive tonicity of lime, lemon, bergamot and cedrat (citron or etrog) – along with the tenderly sulphuric, slightly bitter tones of grapefruit. Enlivening as these materials are, they are enhanced considerably by the addition of deftly-dosed lavender with its appealing floral/herbal facets. They peek out of Zest periodically, just to make sure you’re not ignoring them – graceful and lilting. The radiance and sotto voce animalic murmur of ylang ylang (So buttery! Tinged with ripe banana!) and glowing, powdery mimosa are most welcome; these incrementally, but subtly – increase the breadth of olfactory palette in an elegant fashion. White musk helps sustain the tenacity of this perfume without suffocating it; its effect resembles gossamer in all its delicacy. Sandy doesn’t compose brash, loud perfumes – an attribute which renders them wearable, timeless and captivating. Her fragrances echo the ideal ensemble: you are comfortable in your own skin, able to move unrestrained and feel perfectly polished.

BLUEHILL Fragrances Zest is a form of olfactory time travel. One spritz and I am back in the Luberon barefoot, surrounded by a sea of sunflowers – bathed in that unique light which painters have always adored. Life is less fraught, complicated; we sally forth in a harmonious state of extended ecstasy – on tiptoe. Notes: lime essence, sweet orange, lemon, Italian bergamot, lavender, ylang ylang, mimosa olessence, neroli, grapefruit, cedrat, white musk.

  • Ida says Zest is a form of olfactory time travel. One spritz and I am back in the Luberon barefoot, surrounded by a sea of sunflowers – bathed in that unique light which painters have always adored. Life is less fraught, complicated…this sounds very tempting especially in these times one wants a escape, a serene retreat…. I also like the various combinations of citruses used. Based in the US!

  • Sometimes I will refer to a fragrance as delicious. This is one is all that and more and the pictures that were chosen to accompany the article are lovely.
“One spritz and I am back in the Luberon barefoot, surrounded by a sea of sunflowers – bathed in that unique light which painters have always adored.” yes please! USA reader

  • I enjoyed the comparison to light and the fact that this aims to transport and not overwhelm. This was an excellent post and I would love to try this fragrance from a Boston house – the banana accord also has me intrigued lol I think if done right it could be a great staple to kick back and just enjoy life!

  • This sounds like the perfect summer scent, with such a profusion of citrus notes. I love this quote: “… the sotto voce animalic murmur of ylang ylang (So buttery! Tinged with ripe banana!) and glowing …”. Never has anyone described ylang ylang in this fashion – I’m super intrigued, and I suspect this is a fragrance I would actually enjoy wearing. Based in the US.

  • This sounds like a very luminous and vibrant fragrance with so many citrus fruits blended with sweeter florals like ylang ylang and mimosa. I’d love to experience how the lavender works here too. In the USA.

  • Lovely, uplifting description from Ida! Citrus based fragrances are happy scents for me. I love the use of citrus zest and am delighted to see lavender and mimosa in the list of notes. It sounds like a wonderful summer fragrance. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I love reading these cheery reviews of cheerful fragrances, and Fragrances Zest seem to be very cheerful, made for these otherwise not so cheerful times. Very uplifting, just reading this review by Ida. Interesting to see so many citrusy notes in one perfume. Thanks for the draw and the review. Writing from the USA.

  • This is my new favorite citrus scent, it’s absolutely amazing. I, the man who never wears a fragrance more thank once a month has worn this seven times in the past couple weeks. I adore it that much, and it lasts!

Great review Ida, as always, as Sandy, you know how much I love this!

Thank you to Michelyn for using my photo.

I do not need to enter the draw as I do have the bottle in the photo.

What appealed about Ida’s review is that an attempt is being made to create a long-lasting citrus fragrance – – “It has always been challenging to create an hesperidic fragrance which lingers upon the skin.” And their doing whatever possible to try to make that happen – – “White musk helps sustain the tenacity of this perfume without suffocating it; its effect resembles gossamer in all its delicacy.” That’s something worth having. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I think this fragrance is perfectly named! It definitely has so many citrus notes in it and I love the fact that it is a polished, refreshing, and comfortable perfume, so it sounds perfect for summer. I live in the USA, thanks for the giveaway!

  • A citrus which would stay…that is exactly the quest that I am on! Sounds like this may be what I am looking for. It is also helpful to know that Sandy does not compose brash and loud perfumes as discreet scents are more my cup of tea. Thanks for the review.

  • I love that Ida highlighted the pursuit of a longer-lasting citrus fragrance by the perfumer. There aren’t enough citruses with staying power on the market.

  • NiceVULady says:

Ida paints a very complete picture of what Zest is like. I particularly liked the specificity of the review. How wonderful to find a citrus fragrance that actually lasts on the skin. • After reading Ida’s review of Bluehill fragrances, Zest, with all of the citrus fruits that this has. I feel the sweet and sour of the fruits. “Enlivening as these materials are, they are enhanced considerably by the addition of deftly-dosed lavender with its appealing floral/herbal facets.” I am looking forward to the harmonious state of estended ectasy! • I love hesperidic fragrances, and would love to try this locally produced interpretation. Thank you for such a beautiful description of the notes, Ida! It sounds absolutely refreshing and ethereal.

  • Zest sounds delicious from Ida’s review. I love that several citruses each with their own personality are blended together in Zest. I’d love to take a ride in this citrusy olfactory time machine and see myself as a child under a lemon tree taking in its various smells 🙂 I’m in USA

  • I am in the US. The ripe banana note described by Ida sounds like a nice contrast to the citrus.

Thank you for the great review, Ida!

I love the pictures with all the different citrus fruits and the thoughts in this review. I love how your review (and the pictures) allude to the different smells in both the juiciness of the fruits as well as the zest.

I haven’t smelt any fragrances of this house before.

  • That bit at the end with the sea sunflowers was some lovely imagery. I can probably say we would all could benefit from feeling that way. Sounds quite lovely.

  • What appeals to me is Sandy’s passion for citrus. I love citrus fragrances and I like that Sandy has added lavender and white musk to enhance the longevity. I also like that the fragrance was made to last, but not to be too obnoxious or overbearing. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • I really liked how Ida explained how the different citruses can counterbalance eachother. Also the notes like lavender, ylang ylang and mimosa add to the composition while the white musk extends it and adds to it without suffocating it. Zest sounds like a great scent for summer. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw.

Ida sent me to the dictionary to check on “tonicity” and indeed it is a word that she is using correctly. (I must remember that for Scrabble.) I liked how she gave a good sense of the qualities of different kinds of citrus, and how she showed respect for the scent’s discretion and lack of excess. In North Carolina.

  • I like how Ida describes why citrus fragrances are fleeting. I didn’t realize it’s a molecular weight issue, but it seems obvious now. I also liked how she describes the classiness of BLUEHILL fragrances. I live in the USA.

  • Such a super refreshing fragrance!! I’ve never tried anything from Bluehill Fragrances. Would love to try this.

  • I love that “deftly-dosed lavender” description. Plus I only recently came to realize the magic of blending a powdery mimosa with a zesty citrus. So happy to hear that Sandy was up to the challenge of formulating a long lasting citrus! Certainly no easy feat using natural materials, but it sounds like she succeeded! USA

  • This sounds like a classic citrus, a staple that everyone needs. Perfect for summer! USA
