AZMAN Song for a Wanderer Review (Chris Maurice) 2022 + Distant Destination Giveaway.

AZMAN Song for a Wanderer review

AZMAN Song for a Wanderer Image by Karl

The excitement of the moment when we land our feet in a distant land and take in the new atmosphere, air and heat is like a shot of adrenaline straight into our system. An awakening of new possibilities and the opportunity to shed the skin of what is known and venture into a world where we do not know the outcome is pure exhilaration. Whatever our motives for change, be it a restless heart or a restless mind the spark of new horizons is the greatest quest we will face. When I heard from Husen Baba that he had collaborated with Master Perfumer Chris Maurice (aka Christian Carbonnel) to create a new fragrance my heart skipped a beat. I knew something special was in the mix and Azman Song for a Wanderer is that.

Before Midnight Movie still 2014 (Ethan Hawke Julie Delpy)

Your personal aura is of incredible importance, it is what we project into the world and its power will predetermine your day ahead. As the summertime hits, we look for sunnier climbs and embrace travel and new acquaintances more readily. Our scent precedes us, and its trail lingers far after we are gone, so it makes sense to link our aura with our perfume of choice. Whether we travel out of choice or necessity we embrace distinctive appeal of foreign lands and sometimes they become a part of our lives. AZMAN Song for a Wanderer brings out the magic of Mediterranean vistas and fuses this with an eastern spiritual home of incense and oud via many twists and turns as you will discover.

This is a love song to those of us who adore the golden rays of the sun and acts as snapshots of exotic destinations. The scent plays on the vital elements of life, like the air, we realise its value only when we miss it. The opening is a stroll through acres of zingy lemon and bergamot trees. Whether it be the beauty of Italy, Monaco or Spain, this scent will ignite thoughts of such visits. The entrance is extremely citric and reminds me of the rind and zest of these fruits as opposed to the sweeter aspects and one would be forgiven to think that this perfume follows the classic citric lineage of scents such as Eau Sauvage.

Before Sunrise 1995 (Ethan Hawke Julie Delpy)

However, the movement of AZMAN Song for a Wanderer plays on subtle light sweetness and leads us to a glistening royal glaze delicately drizzled on top of a tart berry and soft orange blossom. I detect a smooth light incense which beautifully provides the heart of the composition this may come from the combination of smoke and tagette. Just a hint, like passing through a medieval medina in Morocco with fine pastries and taking a momentary whiff of sweet Meskouta as opposed to sneaking a cheeky morsel.  AZMAN Song for a Wanderer then takes a detour to fields of floral lavender, tagette and jasmine and whilst the citric and slightly sugary accents continue to hang on, they are slowly overtaken.

Before Sunset 2004

By now my presumptions are well and truly gone as the penultimate act of Song for a Wanderer is somewhat like a magic trick. Shadows come slipping into my consciousness slowly and surely. We enter a wetland steeped in cedar and moss and there is a lively and dewy touch with an herbaceous presence. Aromatic elements are now complimented with woods such as cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli.

Here in the smoky depths of Song for a Wanderer I feel a realisation of tranquil peace. Beyond the wetland the signature of AZMAN comes forth to gift us with a majestic smooth oud. It is wrapped in a mist of musk, which sublimates the herbal nuances so well. The scent projects with purpose and gives a truly elegant impression. This is an incredibly complex creation, which is versatile and fun. Song for a Wanderer is a scent with many intriguing aspects to it and it delivers of many levels, fresh but warm, hazy, and wet, slightly edgy although smooth. There are a wealth layers to uncover and enjoy.

  • The amazing notes of the fragrance and how unique it is. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Thanks for the review Karl!

I really enjoyed your review of Azman’s Vavoom and have asked my girlfriend to buy me a bottle for my birthday!
Although, after reading your take on Song for a Wandered, I’m not sure if I should change my choice.

I love the dark and sexy fragrances and often neglect the fresher citrussy scents for everyday. Something more versatile that I can wear anywhere and not feel out of place.
This sound like one of those perfect scents to wear when you want to be uplifted, feel happy and free.

I’m really stuck in between a rock and hard place now! I’ll have to wait until the draw!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Karl is so right that we are excited when we land into new places and wonder how our experiences may differ from those already familiar places. When we smell a new perfume, we are similar excited about having a novel olfactory experience. AZMAN Song for a Wanderer has different facets so it seems like a fragrance one can take on his/her travels. I am in US.

  • Giorgia295 says:

Very inspiring brand, never tried because here in Italy it’s difficult to find but hope to have the cahnece to try it soon.

  • The numerous changes the fragrance goes through as it dries down are very interesting. Great review Karl! NV, USA

  • Azman is definitely worth discovering. So many unique fragrances to try. I liked the Ethan Hawke pics and the reference to Morocco. The smoke and tagette notes are calling out to me. On my wishlist it goes. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • The fact that this fragrance is complex makes it very appealing. With the current fragrance world shoving out a plethora of “3 note fragrances” it’s nice to find a true artist that can take a wide spectrum of notes to create something intriguing. I also really enjoy oud fragrances even if oud is not the main player. Thank you, Azman, for the generous giveaway and good luck to everyone!

  • Unforgettable review i have to say , AZMAN Song for a Wanderer feels trailblazing, one you’d never forget type of fragrance. I like how sophisticated , slightly cold , and tranquil it is.
The mixture of citruses, woods , incense, flowers and Moroccan desserts I’ve never heard of , is what makes Song for Wanderer so appealing
    Thanks for the draw

Song for a Wanderer is a great name for a fragrance. Given the notes, I can see the journey this scent takes from the Mediterranean and Provence to Morocco. The bright citrus, jasmine lavender morphing into spices, smoke and oud sound like an adventure. MD, USA.

  • Mediterranean feel with eastern incense and oud? Count me in! Two of me favorite genres! With Chris Maurice on board it cannot be a miss! And as Karl describes it: passing through a medieval medina in Morocco with fine pastries and taking a momentary whiff of sweet Meskouta! Beautiful!

I love the smokey feel he describes accented by oud. Cedar too will make it a great woody incensey beauty! The light sweetness is what makes it an amazing one for the weather I live in! Beautiful description.

  • Azman Wanderer sounds really nice. I like that this is the Mediterranean meets the East. Haven’t tried anything from the House yet. Thanks for the giveaway, Ca

Azman song is an orchestration of notes created to celebrate the sunny side of life, a song is a tribute to those who are in love with the golden rays of the sun and nurse a passion for iconic citric scents that embody the soul of distance and acres of blooming lemon and bergamot trees, is an amalgam of orange blossom mystified by a lemony zest that brings out the magic of the Mediterranean vistas.

Song for a Wanderer is a scent with many intriguing aspects to it and it delivers of many levels, fresh but warm, hazy, and wet, slightly edgy although smooth. Very interesting comparison with the “before” movie series. Song for a wanderer sounds like an oriental spicy ambery misterious scent. Thank you for this amazing opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • Nice review Karl! Thanks for introducing us a scent with mediterranean flavors fused with middle eastern touches of incense and oud! It is such a great combo. Living in Spain, reminds me of a scent of an andalusian moorish landscape, or a palace like Alhambra. The golden rays of the sun reveal a trip (we are in on the verge of summer vacations) and in this season I love the iconic citric scents. But something beyond is better, more layers like Chris Maurice does here: A subtle little sweet citrus then the floral wet land with lavender, tagette and jasmine that turns into light smoky cedar and sandalwood. To finish the wandering, the majestic oud, not animalic, with the help of mosses and musk, will help the scent to stay hours in our skin as a neverending trip. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Karl the review of song for a wanderer is fantastic
I enjoyed the travel to sunny destinations reference and how you really take us through every stage of the fragrance. The reference to Eau sauvage, lavender fields and wetlands were indeed beautiful
Also the photos of the Before movies were perfect. Uk

  • A scent that changes is always interesting. And from Karl’s review, Song for a Wanderer really fits its name. Meandering from bright and sunny to shadows and coziness. It sounds like one I would love. I am in the US.

  • I am very interested to be considered to be entered in a drawing for this wonderful perfume. From Karls story I understood that he is enjoying Moroccan food and atmosphere. I’ve never been there so hopefully this fragrance will give me an idea what it is. I am from Washington state- USA
    Thank you

  • I am most interested to smell a bright citrus that morphs into a mossy wetland! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • The notes are sounds wonderful to me. Sounds very natural and unique in the same time. Very good review. Thank you. I live in Europe.

  • Starlit12 says:

Song for a Wanderer sounds so charming. The description of the zesty opening almost made my teeth clench and my mouth water, and then the promise of incense, aromatic aspects and a sense of tranquility lying in the musks and herbs completed an already lovely image. And just how beautiful is the name of this perfume?
I live in the EU. Thanks!

  • Great review. I have been on a citrus kick lately and this just stoked the fire. Karl’s description on the citrus, the berry notes, and everything else are tantalizingly poetic! Cheers from NC USA.

  • Ooh wee. This fragrance contains a lot of my favorite notes. Raspberry, cloves, smoke, oud, amber and sandalwood. My goodness this sounds fantastic, I can’t wait to smell this one.

  • usually i buy fragrances from different places, and later on, they remind me of those trips, although not completely, more like flashbacks. I find it interesting in Karl’s review of Song for a wanderer, that its composition already suggests places and countries – that makes me curious about what I’d feel wearing it.
    I’m in EU.

  • It sounds like a very complex scent with many nuances and a great development, so I’m in. From EU.

  • Karl Topham’s review beautifully captures the magic of this perfume. AZMAN Song for a Wanderer has musk, oud, incense, patchouli, all of which I love. While I haven’t tried this brand before, Karl’s review makes me want to try the brand, but specifically AZMAN Song for a Wanderer. The citrusy notes at the top lead you energetically out to wander, which many of us have been deprived of the last two and a half years, and then the heart notes make you savor the journey, and the base notes than provide warmth and comfort as you settle down after the wanderings. Thanks for an olfactory trip via thus lovely review of AZMAN Song for a Wanderer. I am in the USA.

  • Another interesting take on the oud note by AZMAN. The citrus aspect makes it wearable for the whole year. The wearability combined with the complexity and the unique note combination makes it a sure winner in my book. The glowing review certainly helps.

  • Thank you Karl for your inspiring review! The Mediterranean vibe with eastern incense and Laos Oud? I’m in! Yes, it represents the sunny side of life! And as Karl describes it: passing through a medieval medina in Morocco with fine pastries and taking a momentary whiff of sweet Meskouta! Beautiful! I love the smokey vibe, especially with Oud because it gives more depth and spirit to the fragrance. Cedar too will make it a great woody incense beauty! The light sweetness is what makes it an amazing one for the weather I live in! Gorgeous description. I hope to have it soon 🙂

I started hearing about this company earlier this year and I’ve been interested to try their fragrance releases since then. Judging by its list of notes, I would probably truly like this fragrance. I’m interested to see what the note called ‘wet land’ is like. Karl’s review caused me to be very interested in trying this fragrance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a fantastic review!! I want to experience this fragrance so much! AZMAN scents are so interesting! I’m super interested in how this scent (and house in general) bridges worlds through perfume and with such interesting combinations of notes. I’m crossing fingers to be a lucky winner! ❤️ USA

  • Azman’s collection of scent really highlights new facets of modern perfumery and by the sound of Karl’s description Song for a Wanderer seems to somewhat be a continuation of that saga, whereby fresh notes are contrasted with darker tones. Be it that Chris Maurice is the nose behind this creation intrigues me even more.

Would absolutely love to try it. Thanks for the draw.

  • Well I did not expect the finish of this fragrance to be so distant from the opening notes but maybe that is why it plays with the theme of wandering. Sounds heartfelt. In maryland.

Thank you for this insightful review, Karl! I have found myself to be a true wanderer, and Karl’s introduction almost put tears in my eyes as it expresses exactly why I love going to places I have never been to before. “Venture into a world where we do not know the outcome”, just dive into the pool of endless possibilities and the truest serendipity. Just like the protagonists of the “Before (…)” series which I was crazy about in my late teens. The way Song for a Wanderer has been constructed sounds amazing, with the citruses in the opening, followed by some quite non-obvious mid notes, and sealed by the brand’s signature oud and the woody notes. I am so up for trying this one! Based in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Thank you for the review Karl! I have not tried anything from Azman, but Song for a Wander surely seems like a great starting point.

From the previous AZMAN reviews, I remember Husen Khan lived in different parts of the world, and its multicultural background gave him a different perspective towards fragrances, and life. It’s shown in his idea of AZMAN , and “Song for a Wanderer” .
Just like the owner, the fragrance is multicultural, it combines a chypre, incense, woody and fruity parts , with quality musk and natural oud in one sophisticated scent .

  • Bryant Worley says:

I love scents that aren’t linear/’one note’/boring. Azman opens up extremely sunshiny with the citrices, then becomes a (IMHO) smoky gourmand, finishing off as a woodsy floral. Something worth my time.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Karl’s writing is so personal and evocative, that it takes you on the tip. The introduction propelled me directly in my early twenties when I had been eagerly discovering new destinations. I still love traveling, especially gallivanting in European cities.

I enjoyed reading Karl’s emphasis on the importance of scent as part of our projection into the world. So thought–provoking!
Since I adore wearing uplifting and complex citrusy perfumes in summer, I am particularly drawn to Song for a Wanderer. Complex in nature, but versatile, elegant, fun, and easy to wear is a style of perfume, that I adore.

Thank you for the captivating article, Karl, and thank you to House of Azman for a generous giveaway.

Song for a Wanderer by AZMAN is influenced by both Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern way of life, and cultures. I’m particularly interested of the transition from citruses and berries, to florals , classy sweetness , smoke and woody and patchouli base.

  • I have heard a lot of good things about Azman as a brand. This new offering -Song for a Wanderer by Azman sounds like another beautiful scent based on the review by Karl’s review. I like the combination of notes from the zingy and lemony opening to the woods, musk and oud.

Awesome start with the excitement of landing on a new land. The fragrance has amazing notes, love Raspberry as a note.I live in Greece, Eu.

  • We are certainly entering the season for mediterranean citrus, and the opening of Song for a Wanderer sounds like just the ticket. Interestingly, a smoky heart and the heavier base notes in this fragrance sound almost counter to that opening, but one can never have too many fragrances with a beautiful woody drydown. Thanks for reviewing Song for a Wanderer Karl—your description of this fragrance’s progression is detailed and makes me want to experience it too. (Also, I’ve never seen the Before trilogy, but they’ve been on my list for ages. I’ll rent them someday.)

I’m interested on Karl’s review of Azman Song For A Wanderer. I’ve heard great things about the brand Azman perfumes and the fact that Husen Baba and Chris Maurice teamed up on this speaks volumes. I love how Karl ties certain phases of this fragrance into movies. This fragrance sounds perfect for the warmer weather. I would love to try it. I am from the USA.

  • I loved how you used still shots of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy from different films they’ve done together.
I’ve actually never heard of this perfume house before. It sounds like a lovely scent. I like the progression from the crisp and fruity opening that slowly evolves into a herbally/spicy heart, eventually fading into an earthy/woody base. I’d be thrilled to add this to my collection.
    I live in the USA.

  • “in Morocco with fine pastries and taking a momentary whiff of sweet Meskouta as opposed to sneaking a cheeky morsel.”

There are a few different types of Meskouta Cakes based on the citruses used, more often is Orange Meskouta , it could be Lemon , Tangerine and so on.
It’s basically easy to make Moroccan Orange Cake , but it could be a moist Cake , or it could have texture similar to a sponge cake , especially if you beat the egg whites separately and fold them into the batter for a lighter texture. In Morocco it’s a tea time Cake , and it’s also eaten to break the fast in Ramadan.
Fresh oranges , real orange blossom water and natural A grade vanilla are keys to the cake’s great flavor.
In some parts of Morocco the cake is served with Orange jam and/or coconut icing , and even garnished with crushed nuts.
Meskouta is more often served, and eaten the traditional for Morocco hot mint tea, and/or the so called Moroccan Coffee, strong and very spicy coffee with 6 spices- cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom and clove .
Karl Topham take on Song for a Wanderer made me think of vacation in Morocco with my girlfriend, both eating Orange Meskouta, with Moroccan Mint Tea , and Coffee somewhere in Marrakech.
I very much appreciate the culinary reference Karl made , and of course the giveaway campaign .

It was fun to read about this new offering from Azman. find their takes on the oud genre to be quite innovative. Song for a Wanderer is an ode to a journey across an olfactory landscape filled with zesty citrus, exotic white florals, herbs and musks and precious woods. THis is the first time that I am seeing tagettes (marigold) being used in a fragrance.
