“Inspired by iconic songs. Created by the world’s finest perfumers.” From reading the brand’s manifesto, even before knowing anything more, I knew I was going in for something special, for the synesthete in me swooned at the idea of a brand blending the two invisible worlds into one cohesive concept.

Tanguy Le Baud, art meets art

Tanguy Le Baud, photo via official website

Tanguy Le Baud, the man behind this innovative concept has an impressive background, having spent over a decade at L’Oréal Luxe with big names like Lancôme and Kiehl’s, not just learning the ropes of the fragrance world but also nurturing a deep passion for excellence in luxury. Combine this with his love for music and a quintessentially Parisian upbringing, and you’ve got the unique blend of Art Meets Art.

Tanguy’s vision is about more than just perfume; it’s about creating an experience that resonates on a deeper, emotional level with all who come in contact with his creation. Art Meets Art is where music’s soul meets perfume’s essence, creating a groove to wear on one’s skin and adding a little bit of French chic sparkle to everyday life. Some of the world’s finest perfumers embarked on this journey:

Art Meets Art perfumes

Art Meets Art Like a Virgin, created by Master Perfumer Alberto Morillas, is a pure, luminous aquatic floral surrounded by musk – a throwback to an 80s classic, recomposed with a modern, transparent flair. I can’t wait to pair it with a white T-shirt & wear it in spring, on the first day the sun will be warm enough to leave my jacket at home.

Lilac Wine, composed by Frank Voelkl, is a heady and mysterious purple scent, a calming lavender-violet-plum that melts into a deep mossy cedarwood texture. If you like to wear perfume on your wrists (like I do), every night when you go to sleep, I can’t think of a more comforting, cozy, and relaxing choice.

Sexual Healing, created by Christophe Raynaud, is a blend of honey, ginger, tobacco, and vanilla that feels “hot, just like an oven”, as Marvin would say. If one can translate the slow movement of honey pouring down alongside the wax melting from a yellow candle, this is it – warm,  thick, enveloping, and deep.

My favorite, Art Meets Art Besame Mucho, on which we are going to focus on today, is also composed by perfumer Christophe Raynaud.

My approach to fragrances is that it should make people want to hug and kiss.” Christophe Raynaud

Born in Paris, Christophe Raynaud is a creator with a unique talent for composing beautiful and universally desirable fragrances. Throughout his career, he created perfumes for various brands, including Guerlain, Thierry Mugler, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Music plays an integral part in Christophe’s life, and he follows the new generation of artists with great interest. If he were a song, he said he would be: “You Are Everything” by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye.

Besame Mucho

Leo Anchoriz and Sara Monteil in the 1963 movie Noches de Casablanca IMDb

Art Meets Art Besame Mucho is a bolero composed at 19 years old by Mexican pianist Consuelo Velázquez. According to Velázquez, she wrote this song even though she had never been kissed yet at the time, and kissing, as she heard, was considered a sin. This universal romantic anthem, light in style and deep in content, became the most covered song in Spanish of the 20th century, including The Beatles, Sara Montiel, Plácido Domingo, Césaria Evora, Dean Martin, and Nat King Cole. For creating Besame Mucho, Christophe Raynaud was inspired by the provocative screen interpretation of this romantic anthem by Sara Montiel.*

Art Meets Art Besame Mucho feels like wearing my favorite black leather biker jacket: cool, comfortable, and timeless. It’s amazing how well the familiarity of a gesture repeated over time is translated in olfactive form – for you, those with long hair, you know the movement of gliding your arms into the cold smooth sleeves, accompanied -almost in the same time- by the gesture of flipping the hair out of the collar – well, the sensation it here, in all its little details. The texture of the leather: crisp, cold, and smooth to the touch is recreated with new details – the blood orange that gives it a metallic taste, and I almost hear the zipper going up. A whisper of incense weaves through, evoking the serene, cold aroma of a catholic church, grounding the fragrance with a touch of solemnity. Cold on cold, the milky pearls touch the pale skin and infuse the aura of old-world nostalgic elegance with notes of vegetal ambrette. Feels like underneath the jacket I am wearing my little black dress, with orris, giving it a classical, tailored luxurious feel, that makes you hold your head a little higher and straighten your back for the perfect aristocratic posture. Juicy blackcurrant mix with creamy sandalwood and woody notes, further envelop you in a cool, relaxed, and effortless embrace. Much like the perfect leather biker jacket, worn on top of the perfect little black dress, this fragrance’s mojo is daring, elegant, and sexy – all balanced in the right proportions.

Main accords: Top: blood mandarin, incense, pink pepper; Heart: orris, ambrette, blackcurrant; Base: black leather, cedarwood atlas, white sandalwood

  • The sensual, warm, and addictive nature of this fragrance that evokes passion and romance really sparks my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

This is definitely a reminder of why brands like art meets art or so special. They encapsulate a moment in time or a feel that others try but often fail to do. Basame mucho sounds deeply fruity and smooth. A real pleasure for the springtime or hopefully a year round wear. Would love to add to my collection, from Jacksonville, NC.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I like the idea of a black leather fragrance that’s enhanced with notes of incense and ambrette. I don’t own a black leather jacket, but this sounds like the next best thing! I live in Maryland USA.

  • I rode a motorcycle for over 30 years, and still have my black leather jacket. While the new armored jackets are much more practical and sensible, I still love my black leather. A sexy, feminine version to go with a sexy little dress sounds awesome and since I’m more into scent these days than dresses, this fragrance sound great! I live in the US

  • “It’s amazing how well the familiarity of a gesture repeated over time is translated in olfactive form”. That’s beautiful. No need to impress with material things, but a simple, sincere gesture, making this perfume so evocative, remembering us how we should act more. We need to love. I am from EU.

  • What an interesting concept for a line of fragrances. I love the idea of basing scents on popular songs. Lilac Wine, Sexual Healing, and Besame Mucho all sound gorgeous. What sparks my interest most about Besame Mucho is the combo of incense with the leather. As Nicoleta mentioned, each of those notes have a cooling quality to them and I really enjoy those types of scents for the summer nights here in the south. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • I like all the juxtapositions in this. The elegant orris and the cool incense, the dark leather and the juicy current, the fresh blood mandarin and the creamy sandalwood… its cools and warms, roughs and refined, and overall romantic. Thank you for the chance to win, in California.

Discovering Art Meets Art and their fragrance Besame Mucho was truly exciting. The concept of blending iconic songs with perfumes feels like a sensory adventure. Learning about Tanguy Le Baud’s passion for both fragrance and music adds depth to the brand. Besame Mucho, inspired by the iconic bolero, sounds enchanting. Christophe Raynaud’s translation of the song into scent is fascinating. The description of the fragrance’s notes paints a vivid picture. I’m eager to explore the playlist on Spotify and immerse myself in the world of Besame Mucho. Overall, it seems like a daring, elegant, and undeniably sexy fragrance that I’d love to experience.

  • this fragrance’s mojo is daring, elegant, and sexy – all balanced in the right proportions.

Main accords: Top: blood mandarin, incense, pink pepper; Heart: orris, ambrette, blackcurrant; Base: black leather, cedarwood atlas, white sandalwood. I am intrigued by the notes especially Leather, Sandalwood, Incense and orris. This is a house that I have got no experience with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

Main accords: Top: blood mandarin, incense, pink pepper; Heart: orris, ambrette, blackcurrant; Base: black leather, cedarwood atlas, white sandalwood. • Of course I would try this fragrance, the even the name is so appealing! Thanks, Nicoleta, for sharing with us the history behing Besame mucho, V. writing the song even though she had never been kissed yet at the time, and even more, kissing to be considered a sin! Wow!

  • Nicoleta’s review beautifully captures the essence of Art Meets Art perfumes, highlighting the seamless fusion of music and fragrance to create captivating olfactory experiences. The meticulous attention to detail in each composition, evoking emotions and memories through scent, is truly intriguing. The way she describes the sensory journey of each fragrance, from the nostalgic allure of Besame Mucho to the comforting embrace of Lilac Wine, sparks a curiosity to explore these unique blends further.

  • I would love to be included in the draw! I don’t think I’ve ever had a “scent” rise up immediately upon hearing that song again waft past, but it did here—I smell that leather as skin and hair. How is it that a perfume brand hasn’t before grabbed onto Besame Mucho. I feel young and in love and openly vulnerable just imagining it. Thank you for your evocative description of both song and scent.

  • The combination of dark notes like black leather and incense, together with the citrusy-fruity qualities of blood mandarin and blackcurrant, really make me curious about the overall smell of this one. Please count me in for the draw. Thanks!

  • Oh, how I love citrus (especially blood orange) paired with something deep and dark like leather, and the way you described the metallic from the blood orange being the zipper pulled up on your favorite, broken-in black leather coat, I nearly let out a squeal 🙂 And that serene incense…!! I love everything about this, including that blackcurrant note…wow this sounds so sexy.

  • I love the description of whipping your hair out from underneath where it is tucked from your jacket. This fragrance sounds alive and active, like a verb. I love fragrances that transport me to an experience. It’s particularly why I think it’s such an acute and direct way to connect creatively to your imagination while still grounding you fully to the present. This sounds leathery and cool, like someone you admire. From the US.

  • Sometimes, those with long hair can also rate to putting on the leather jacket, then leaving the hair inside it, to experiment, even for a few moments, with the fantasy of short hair. We all have it. But we are strong (for a while). The incense and ambrette intrigued me in this composition… I have the feeling this is a calming leather. Can that be? We will see… I live in Bucharest, Romania.

  • I am in the US. The idea of black leather jacket, worn to perfection, something comforting, is what sparks my interest

  • Besame Mucho has such interesting contrasts. The black leather and woods seem masculine and edgy while the orris, ambrette and pink pepper lean feminine and elegant, I can see why Nicoleta finds the fragrance to be daring and sexy. I’m in the US.

  • I love when a fragrance places you in a specific time and place, evokes a memory while creating a new one. I love realistic leather scents.

It smells like a catholic church? Say no more…

  • Nicoleta’s vivid description of Art Meets Art Besame Mucho is truly captivating! I love how she has intricately woven the sensory experience by explaining how the fragrance starts with the crisp touch of the leather to the subtle notes of blood orange and incense. The analogy to wearing a black leather biker jacket is also brilliant, and it paints such a clear picture of the fragrance’s daring, elegant, and sexy personality. I can almost sense the cool, relaxed embrace enveloping me. Thanks for sharing this olfactory journey with such poetic detail!

Something that I love about this description is the notes that this fragrant has, I truly love a really deep leather sense that evokes emotion. The smell of leather brings out so many memories of mine, and it’s truly incredible and it makes me feel so cozy inside being able to wear a scent that can bring out so many memories for me. I also love that this fragrance has a bit of note to add to the sexiness and elegance of this fragrance making it balanced !!

    Commenting from the USA!!

  • Besame Mucho…
This is right up my alley. Juicy blackcurrant mix with creamy sandalwood and woody notes screams black leather jacket just like Nicoleta mentions. I know that blood mandarin is just the perfect amount of citrus for that combo and I want it lol.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • The notes for this fragrance sound amazing. I grew up listening to classics like Besame Mucho, as well as its Vietnamese iteration. To be daring, elegant and sexy – what more could you wish for?
    With love from CA, USA

  • As Nicoleta describes Art Meets Art Besame Mucho: a black leather jacket over a little black dress! It’s what you wear to a concert or gallery opening. Or maybe just meeting some peeps for a beverage. Plus the concept of blending music with fragrance works so well. Sparks immediate visions of “big black boots, long brown hair, she’s so sweet with that ‘Get back!’ stare!” Love the playlist to accompany this scent as well. Kinda sums up my better half honestly. 😉 Cheers from Ohio, USA!

  • The Art Meets Art concept is great, and I’m surprised by the varied and interesting music profiled so far. Montiel’s twinkling version of Besame Mucho is smoky, nocturnal, and full of dynamic swings in intensity; it sounds like Raynaud’s perfume uses an incense and orris wrapped strong leather accord to similar effect. As Nicoleta says, “daring, elegant, and sexy—all balanced in the right proportions.” Would love to try it.

The feeling of longing for something you have never experienced. I love the intensity this evokes and the possibilities of translating it into scent. The way Nicoleta describes it, I see a timeless, perfectly balanced scent that incorporates some of my favorite scent experiences: incense, ambrette, orris. All these added to leather make me think of a rather understated scent. One that you can pick up each and every day. I’m not sure it is, but would love to find out. I live in Romania. Thank you!

  • What a great review by nicoleta
The reference to black leather and smelling timeless got my attention

  • The cool, yet comfortable and timeless biker style leather jacket image was very evocative for me. It seems indeed like this citrus and leather blend would evoke exactly that feeling. Sometimes one just needs that easy reach, one that feels familiar, yet provides that much need extra oomph.
    I live in the EU.

  • I am a sucker for a leather scent. I love how the review likens the experience of this one to putting on a leather jacket – I can vividly bring to mind that coolness against the bare skin of my arms as it goes on, the similarly cool hug as I zip it up and it tightens around me. Mmm. Would love to try this one. I’m in the UK.

  • The combination of the blood orange giving it a metallic feel with the smooth leather and cool incense is what sounds amazing. I love my leather jackets and it would be awesome to wear this on top. Live in Nevada, USA

Love the name and the song, Besame Mucho. I like Tanguys vision:”it’s about creating an experience that resonates on a deeper, emotional level with all who come in contact with his creation”. A fragrance that is described as “cool, comfortable, and timeless” works for me. Sign me up!

I just spent a nice afternoon on Youtube, listening to many of the versions of Besame Mucho. I love the original and also Cesaria Evora’s gorgeous version. I haven’t worn my leather jacket in years, but I remember exactly how it smells. I always felt so confident wearing it. I am curious about the blood mandarin note in this fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’d no idea that the person who wrote Besame Mucho had never been kissed! Makes me smile. I’m a huge fan of wearing a leather jacket over a dress, so if this is evocative of that look and feel, count me in! I’m in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the lovely review Nicoleta.

I do like the idea behind this brand and enjoyed the previous review of their scents.

THis one is appealing because of the mix of leather and incense. I’m surprised to hear that the blood orange creates a metallic tang and that would be interesting to experience. To create an experience of both coziness and coldness in a single fragrance is no easy task.

    Cheers from WI, USA
