Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument Review (Antonio Alessandria) 2016 + Scents of Silence and Sicilia Draw

Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument review

Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument by Nicoleta©

You tell me that silence
is nearer to peace than poems
but if for my gift
I brought you silence
(for I know silence)
you would say
This is not silence
this is another poem
and you would hand it back to me
” Gift, Leonard Cohen (from The Spice-Box of Earth poem collection, published in 1961)

Having recently moved on a quiet street, I am still trying to make peace with my new home soundscape that gives me some mild anxiety. I never thought getting re-accustomed to silence would be so hard, after years and years of constant and weirdly reassuring background noise composed of dissonant sounds of trams rolling on their tracks in the night, nervous motorcycle engines revving up, and all the joys of the “Stockholm syndrome” that come with living in one of Europe’s most traffic-congested capitals. Last evening, widely opening my windows after the rain, to let all in the coolness I sought and sighed after, underneath the usual eerie stilness of the night, I heard music coming from my neighbor’s house. It took me a couple of seconds to realize that it was not a recording but a  live voice, with a real guitar backing it up. It made me wonder what makes us immediately react and recognize when a song is being played live and why it just hits us differently. Maybe it’s the social connection of experiencing music together with other people in real-time, perhaps it’s all the slight organic deviations and nano-seconds of idiosyncratic hesitations, the anticipation of unpredictability, or maybe it’s just the silence interwoven between the notes that we recognize as real.

Éperdument [epɛʀdymɑ̃], adverb, translates as madly, wildly, desperately, passionately, utterly.

Living is breathing. We breathe, but not only to live. Our scent instantly transforms our aura into something more emotional. An aroma can trigger an elusive memory like a story in a series of frames. This is my own idea of a perfume: a memory, an emotion, a dream. My fragrances are stories of my life, my imagination and my secrets.” Antonio Alessandria

Antonio Alessandria of Antonio Alessandria Parfums

Antonio Alessandria of Antonio Alessandria Parfums

There is a sense of emotional voyeurism trespassing into Antonio’s scented world, all homage to  the island of Sicily, his home. His fragrances are deeply personal, giving you the guilty but giddy excitement of peeking over someone’s shoulder and the feeling that you are on the verge of unraveling more of the mystery than you are shown. As I touched upon live music and its effects, compared to the studio versions, the scented memories Antonio bottles up feel more like theatre freeze-frames than movie stills. There is a sense of immediacy, intimacy, and a visceral and deeply atemporal quality to his fragrant constructions. Like a gifted set designer, he puts the setting into place for you – there is a story for you to enjoy (with just enough details to set the mood without rigidly constricting your imagination), a dynamic between the main (notes) characters to create and build tension, hints for unfolding deeper layers of the riddles and enough ambiguity to keep you guessing and wishing for more.

Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument

Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument by Nicoleta©

The setting for Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument, the olfactory flashback: at the beginning of the twentieth century, Italy was in the middle of a massive migration – millions of Italians leaving the country to find better fortune over the seas. In the following years, the “arranged” marriages became the norm, and ships filled with brides would carry over to distant lands thousands of young women that would be promised to marry unknown (and usually older) men that were already living as emigrants.  With a suitcase usually containing just the bridal dress and the photograph of the man they were supposed to marry, they embarked on the ships of brides and prepared for the marriages that were often celebrated immediately, at the port of arrival. The fragrance tells the story of the return home of a bride many years after her departure. After a happy life together with her beloved stranger, after his death, she decides to return back home, to Sicily, the same way as she left, by sea. Approaching the shore, she will stand on the deck of the ship, her suitcase filled with memories, re-awakening in the long-lost smells and colors of  the island.  Éperdument is the scented freeze-frame of that moment of silence and the beautifully intense reconnection to her childhood and younger self.

An airy, elegant floral construction with fresh green facets and a salty touch by Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument is an olfactive tale you should get lost in this summer. The heart races in the first moments of the olfactive embrace: the wind mixes the salty air of the sea with the buzz of life and youth coming from the shore: citrus floral notes mixed in vegetal, crisp elements. There is a greenness that speaks of the spring of life, the fennel playing here a leading role, with its multisensorial facets: juicy spikes of sappy vegetal wetness, anise-like reassuring sweetness, and tactile woody nervures.

Salvador Dalí Hercules Lifts the Skin of the Sea, 1963

Floating on top of the gardens and bushes growing on Sicily’s shores, next, the perfume gathers a rich floral pallete and paints the memories of a life coming full circle. We have the innocence and fragility of infancy in the delicate lily of the valley, growing in the shade; the carefree laughter of the childhood days spending sucking the sweet juice from the base of the honeysuckle flowers; the promises of carefree lazy summer days to come, spent daydreaming underneath the orange blossom trees; and the exploding sensuality of youth:  the heady, rich and sweet jasmine. Coming down from the waves formed on top, brought on by the winds hitting the shore, we descent into the deep, calm, steady waters of the sea to sunken treasures of softwoods, warm musks, and golden ambers.

So, if you want for a new companion for your summer-  fresh but with more depth than a citrus, floral and sensual but with a melancholic edge, aquatic but only in the droplets of the Mediterranean Sea carried in the salty air, Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument could very well be your perfect silent side-kick.

Top: Green and hesperidic notes, wild fennel, marine and ozonic notes;,Heart: Orange blossom, jasmine, honeysuckle, lily of the valley; Base: Soft woods, musky and ambery notes.

I really enjoyed that description below. Please count me in. EU

  • Somehow i picture in my mind this fragrance luminous, sharp, wide and grounded like an old italian movie , Nicoleta’s review suggested me a cinematic olfactory creation! From Romania with love!

  • I am recently exploring the marine note in perfumes, and love the description of this combination with honeysuckle and green notes. Off the beaten path, so to speak – would love to try it!

  • Nicoleta’s stunning & contemplative review endears me to this fragrance and makes me want to sample others, like Nacre Blanche & Noir Obscur. ❤️ The wild fennel note is especially intriguing with its murmurs of mint & citrus within the licorice. Perhaps the same vitality of live music? The layers & ambiguity Nicoleta describes sound like a fascinating study of structure & blending. I would love to win this fragrance; no matter what, I love the chance to offer some thoughts. Thank you so much for this opportunity! USA

  • This fragrance looks fantastic. I love fennel and wish it was used in more scents. And I’ll just say the bottle looks fantastic too! (I’m a sucker for an aesthetically appealing bottle.) Nicoleta’s review was gorgeous. It made me want to drop what I’m doing and immediately go out and buy a bottle. I love the idea of this fragrance having enough complexity to tell a tale all on its own, just through scent.

    Cheers from NC, USA.

  • The description by Nicoleta of how a bride returning home to Sicily in a ship and reawakening to the once familiar smells and sights of her home was very interesting. It’s an experience that many of us have had, going back to a place after a long time, and suddenly recognizing it by the smell, even many years later. And capturing the smell in a perfume means one can be transported to one’s home, virtually, olfactorilly, even while being far away. Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument is such a perfume, and I would love to try it. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

  • Nicoleta well done with taking us back to a place we once knew, the smells are familiar , unforgettable. The notes are lovely.. This is something I would love to try. Great review you captured so many feelings in a Fragrance well done. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • jmmcmenamin says:

I really appreciated the thoughtfulness that went in to choosing poetry and artwork that represented the scent and the review. Sometimes I can’t draw the connection between the images and the review (or it’s an image that’s too generic to be thought provoking). Not this time! I’m in Louisiana, USA.

  • From Nicoleta’s review, Éperdument seems like a fragrance that is well-suited to the current hot weather we are experiencing. It has aquatic and floral elements. Also glad to see Dali’s painting as I had never seen it before. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • cynthia f says:

This must be a beautiful fragrance because the perfumer’s story, his widow’s moment standing near the shore of her homeland inspired a moment for the author- when the live music broke the silence of the night. We’re given thoughts about that visceral, immediate, alive, loss of self feeling we crave when we go to a concert, a theater performance, or smell a new perfume that takes us somewhere-for a moment. I am curious. TX, USA

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Very interested in a summer scent that is “melancholic” as the review says. But with a fresh edge added; the saltiness of the sea. I live in California, USA.

  • NikkoNikko says:

What a great premise for a perfume. The nostalgia of scents from our past is something I really resonate with. I miss the cool fragrant air of Southern California where I grew up. Knowing a beach is nearby just by the smell, is just a memory where I live now. I hope I can find that history in a bottle one day, and I know it’s far from Sicily, but perhaps just the want for remembrance will be enough. From Idaho, USA

  • The story of Italian immigrants and the ships full of “brides” traveling to an unknown place, to join their lives with that of an utterly unknown person, really transported me to those times of uncertainty, courage, sacrifice. Despite the fact it sounds quite barbaric for here and now, there is a certain element of romance and adventure to it.
Éperdument sounds glorious, a citrus floral vegetal Mediterranean seawater perfume enveloped by an aura of melancholy. Truly sounds like coming home, especially if home means a Mediterranean coast.

    Many thanks!

  • I am always on the look out for the complex summer fragrances and Eperdument seems just like what I adore smelling in the summer. Deep, marine qualities, with a green touch, sounds amazing, with an Italian flair! I live in Croatia, EU.

Nice review! I’m quite intrigued by the note breakdown. I can’t really envision what it would smell like. Would love to try. From USA.

  • Nicoleta gives us an stunning review of a perfume and of a special moment of her life, the moving to a new house and the hardship to getting re-accustomed to silence . Imagine the hardship of these brides in this returning home boat trip after a life away from their homeland. Alessandria has an unique and special touch is translating specific stories from his childhood memories of Sicily into deeply atemporal perfumes. In a way each time Mr. Alessandria goes back to Sicily must feel this feeling and he translate it in a scent. Nicoleta says is an “airy, elegant floral construction with fresh green facets and a salty touch” and I can agree that this are the smells you feel when you are close to Sicily’s shores. I love the use of the wild fennel! During summer it pervades the air with his intense aroma , so typically mediterranean ( I spent summers in Mallorca and love the wild fennel mixed with the sea salty breeze). Definitely Éperdument is a new companion for my summer. I live in Spain, EU

hi! nicoleta’s review had an electric effect on me. after its first wave, it made me imagine the voice of pavese reading, sotto voce, sempre vieni dal mare/ e ne ai la voce roca/ sempre ai occhi segreti/ d’acqua viva tra i rovi […] and associate it with what i imagine the smell of éperdument is. the depth of the apparent simplicity of pavese’s poetry, his love for the quiteness of the nature as discovered in his childhood (and portrayed in his prose), his passion (éperdument, in fact), the stilness of the rocks under a salty sun, much as the silence between some notes of the live song nicoleta told us about, the contrast between the depths of pavese’s psyche and the brightness of many of his writings, these were my first flashes in reaction to reading the review, my first associations in order to reconstruct something i do not know, but somehow already know thanks to its vivid depiction. (just now i realize the only olfactory association with sicily i own is a d&g sicily. it’s funny it didn’t came to my mind previously.)

& sorry for my not so good english and choice of words.

  • I am a total stranger to this house, so it would be a great opportunity to get to test it!
    Greetings and thanks from EU!

  • Melancolic rendering of Mediterranean citruses, fennel and sea salt sound like perfect company for the cloudy summer days when southerlt winds are making the air full of salt and makes everyone slow down and in acquire a more philosophical stance.

  • The description of life and full circle and the story of this woman who leaves Sicily and then comes back on her own terms It’s so enthralling that not only do I want to smell the fragrance but I’d also love to read the book! I live in the US.

    Finally 🙂
I not only tried Antonio Alessandria fragrances , but I have the best one . It’s called Noir Obscure.
First time i’ve smelled AA was at Luckyscent , and Noir Obscure was the best one, I even bought samples.Boozy and overly spicy in a good way opening , and in the base leather is pretty prominent, there’s fruity sweetness too. It’s kind of Gothic, incense is so well done.
I’m so happy that Antonio Alessandria fragrances found a new home in US at Indigo Perfumery, solid boutique you can trust.
I like guitar , live music, cold marine fragrances with floral and musky notes, , I’d love to win Èperdument .
    Thanks a lot

  • Wistful and fantastic review. The ship of Brides and the smell of the sea really grabbed my attention. The photos were amazing Miss Tomsa
I have read so much about Antonio Alesandria Parfums especially about Fleurs et Flammes so now I can get the sample pack from Indigo Perfumery and try more.

I like Nicoleta’s description of the fragrance as “fresh but with more depth… perfect as a summer silent sidekick”. The notes sound really interesting to me and the bottle just looks beautiful.

  • Ships of Brides is what really sparked my interest. Why haven’t there been movies about this? Could be a drama or a romantic comedy! Or even a horror movie (that would really be scary). The description of Eperdument also sparked my interest. Airy, salty, floral, light but different than a citrus. Yes please! I am in the US.

  • I always love a good ‘experience perfume’ and when it is a ‘memory perfume’ as well…well, it can hardly get much better! This review provoked a melancholy feeling in me…that feeling of longing to be home among the ‘known’ and yet yearning to experience the mysterious ‘unknown’. Epurdument sounds like It would recreate the experience of a trip to sea-side Italy. I love anise in perfume and would love a chance to try this. I am in the US. Thank you for the chance!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds amazing!!! I do want more depth than citrus, melancholic floral, and I crave the salty air. I need to try this one. Also, I am going to have nightmare of ships filled with brides! Awesome review and incredible inspiration! Thanks for this review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • I love fragrances with an air of melancholia. Nicoleta captured that vibe well in this review. I think jasmine is a beautiful scent, but I don’t own a jasmine-dominated scent yet. This would be a great contender!

I LOVE the fresh and airy floral fragrances and un this case, having a Big charge of Orange blossom and Jasmine It could really become one of my favourite perfumes.

Antonio Alessandria background story is remarkable, translating personal stories , not only from his childhood memories, but from his whole life span , into fragrances somehow related to Sicily. Not so easy to achieve.
Éperdument feels nostalgic , we all have suitcases filled with memories. It’s ’s also lively, after all lazy summer days are still upon us, even though oue childhood days are long gone now .
I have not yet tried Antonio Alessandria fragrances.

  • I love fennel and really appreciate it in perfume. Years ago my favorite scent was a combination of anise and honeysuckle. It was the first time I ever experienced the licorice scent in a fragrance. In maryland.

  • Marine, Honeysuckle and Ambery notes with a little salt sound amazing and takes my mind to the sea or a port where the waves gently crash against the rocks leaving a salty residue. This has to be special. I live in Indiana USA

  • roxhas1cat says:

So glad we don’t have arranged marriages any longer. That must have been quite an experience for the widow to return to Italy and breathe in that familiar scent. As people were not so mobile long ago and many never returned to their homeland. I’d love to try a summer fragrance that isn’t citrus-centric. I felt very taken back reading about sucking the nectar from the Honeysuckle plants, a simple yet strong memory. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • AleksCipri says:

Nicoleta’s review was so transportive! This perfume has a very interesting story as inspiration. I can completely imagine how it smells. My heart skips a beat imagining being on a boat and smelling all of those amazing smells of Italy and its shores. In Italy somehow everything smell and tastes better. This review made me anxious to see Italy again. Or at least to smell it in this perfume. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Belladonna says:

This is a perfect description of what I love for summer – “fresh but with more depth than a citrus, floral and sensual but with a melancholic edge, aquatic but only in the droplets of the Mediterranean Sea carried in the salty air”. Such beautiful writing! Thank you for the generous drawing! In the US

  • The story of Italian emigrant women returning by sea to their homeland was poignant. Sicily is on my bucket list. The use of wild fennel, orange blossom, and green hesperidic notes in combination with the marine notes really evoke the homecoming Nicoleta so eloquently describes. The bottle is elegant. I’m in MD. USA.

  • patrick_348 says:

This almost sounds like the summer fragrance of my dreams: no cliche citrus or excessive aquatics, but with lots of green and delicate florals. This sounds completely wearable, but also unusual and inventive. I am eager to try it. I live in North Carolina in the USA.

  • The story of the “ships of brides” broke my heart. As a daughter of immigrants, I know how difficult it was to leave beloved family members and travel far into the unknown, with hope guiding your path. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • I love the idea of the emotional voyeurism of entering another’s scented world – actually quite a nice description of fragrance, in general! And I admittedly like most of my scents with a faint melancholic edge, so this appeals to me. I’m in the US.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thank you Nicoleta for this great review! As it often happens, we live in place and yet you learn something about it from foreigners : I of course knew of all the people that – especially from the south of Italy – emigrated to other countries, but I didn’t know about the young ladies that would leave with only their wedding dress and the picture of the man they had to marry! Antonio Alessandria is a fantastic perfumer, his creations are so evocative, they stir memories and sensations buried in the back of your brain… I have tried the fragrances he has made for Nobile 1942 but I have never actually sampled anything from his own line so I would love to win Eperdument! The notes are stunning and I am really intrigued by the use of fennel! Greetings from Italy

  • ‘So, if you want for a new companion for your summer- fresh but with more depth than a citrus, floral and sensual but with a melancholic edge, aquatic but only in the droplets of the Mediterranean Sea carried in the salty air, Antonio Alessandria Parfums Éperdument could very well be your perfect silent side-kick.’ – I do want this!!

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

The passion, the lifeforce etched into Antonio’s creations are more than tangible, Nicoleta expertly teased all the tenous fibres of Eperdument into a beautiful tapestry of landscape and the memories of a journey. Summer will not be complete without a touch of this on skin. I live in Sw France.

  • The review is poetry and the history (esp the “ships of brides”) intriguing. We’re not getting out of the States this summer so I’d love to bring the Italian coast to me in NC USA.

  • All Antonio Alessandria fragrances are true representation of artisanal perfumery, all reflecting perfumer inner piece and his whole life.
Éperdument particularly is marine, citrusy, with florals. I presume that’s how Antonio Alessandria is envisioning the seacoast of Sicily in the Spring.
Thank you Nicoleta, and Antonio Alessandria Parfums

  • I was so happy to see these at Indigo–sampler on the “must buy” list! I’m in the US but I’d be happy to have an olfactory trip to the Mediterranean Sea.

  • I always respect when creation is an homage to your city or country. A kind of expressing how you feel about it as in this case for Sicily. Tried to capture the transaction of the city during the years. I would like to experience it first hand. Thanks for the review Nicoleta.

Nuit Rouge I’ve sampled because of Lauryn Beer review on Cafleurebon. In Sicily , and the region Rhubarb Grapefruit Custard Cake is part of the local culinary. It’s a bit tart , juicy and delicious , just like Nuit Rouge.
I always relate fragrances to some sort of food. Nicoleta take on Éperdument reminded me of making, and later eating Orange Blossom Cake with glazed orange peels , sitting on the beach, somewhere in Sicily , and enjoying time.
Working with Indigo Perfumery would be beneficial for the brand , and us , the buyers.
Nuit Rouge bottle, and Éperdument sample is what I need right now 🙂
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I’d love to try a fragrance from Antonio Alessandria. This fragrance seems like it would be something which I can enjoy. I’m interested in seeing what effect the fennel has on this fragrance and I like the list of notes for this one. Also, I appreciated learning about how many Italian women would travel to the U.S. for an arranged marriage. I live in MD., U.S.A.

Nicoleta’s depiction of the fragrance and the story it relates to is so compelling I feel like I am on the ‘ship of brides’ leaving Sicily to start a new life, and then coming back with history making a full circle. • Very interesting review !!!
This fragrance sounds beautiful because has very interesting and nice the perfumer’s story about his widow’s moment standing near the shore of her homeland, when the live music broke the silence of the night about Italy etc.

Romantic natural smelling marine fragrance is what I’m expecting from Èperdyment
Indigo Perfumery is well known boutique, good to know the brand is now available in US.
Oh’ I have a favorite fragrance created by Antonio Alessandria, as perfumer . It’s Rudis from Nobile 1942 .

  • Due to rarity of the fragrances , I have a feeling I’m one of the few Cafleurebon readers here , who actually smelled some Antonio Alessandria perfums .
I go to fragrance meetings twice a month, where all should bring brand new, or relatively unknown fragrances. I have smelled two Antonio Alessandria fragrances Nacre and Noir Obscur there. I do admit Nacre is not my cup of tea. Noir Obscure on the other hand is great , both on paper, and on skin. Warm leather oriental I’ll gladly wear myself.
Éperdument citrus floral elements are so easy to wear, so inviting and carefree. I also like the story behind the fragrance, and pictures and paintings in the article.

Thank you for the great review Nicoleta.

I’m a huge fan of Anotonio’s work because of the scenery that he is able to create in his olfactory works. I vividly remember the scent that he had created based on a religious festival in Italy. I love how that in spite of being a citrus fragrance, this scent has melancholic touches to it.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The ‘melancholic edge’ is what really caught my eye about the review. I love the story about the sea, the round trip voyage and a full life lived. That’s wonderful to understand the inspiration behind the perfume. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

Stunning review!  I am very drawn in by the etymology and  historical context you paint a picture of.  I find the idea of this fragrance very intriguing since I generally don’t enjoy generic “fresh” scents, but the combination fresh notes and the wet woods sounds like this could be the perfect fresh fragrance for a non-fresh lover. I’m in the US.
