Tea time won’t be the same without my Donna
At night I lie awake and dream of Donna
I think about that small cafe
That’s where we used to meet each day
And then we used to sit a while
And drink our afternoon tea

I’ll take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
If you take it with me (afternoon tea)
You take as long as you like
Cause I like you, girl

I take sugar with tea (afternoon tea)
You take milk if you please (afternoon tea)
Like you talking to me
Because you ease my mind –
– “Afternoon Tea” by the Kinks

Tea is enjoying a renewed popularity these days, in no small part thanks to the phenomenon of Netflix’s Bridgerton. I myself have spent many hours imbibing that venerable beverage, and the iced variety is one of my favourite warm weather tipples. Here’s a tip on how to make a perfect summer cuppa: take equal parts black tea, green tea and mate, and add three different chamomiles; blend with ripe berries and a generous squeeze of citrus. Sprinkle beeswax, sweet spice, honey-blond tobacco, airy florals, and wood notes. Add one immensely talented perfumer and stir. Finish with a dollop of orris butter and spray liberally, et voila! Le parfait parfum de the.

Salon dt, from Angelos Creations Olfactives, is the quintessential iced tea for the skin – aromatic, with multilayered tea notes and just the right touches of astringency, bitter citrus, and woods to feel refreshing, and flowers to add airiness and a bit of classical refinement. The name is a pun on salon de thé with the lower case “dt” as a reference to perfume Angelos Balamis’ scientific background (he’s an engineer).

Modern tea fragrances can, however, sometimes come across as one-dimensional, of little else than Earl Grey, matcha or mate with maybe a bit of lemon or honey. Balamis sidesteps this problem neatly by piquing Earl Grey’s characteristic medicinal floralcy with a bounce of juicy raspberry and, just a little later, the addition of apricot-infused osmanthus, with its sly suggestion of tea cakes. He is careful to also add depth and colour to the tea aromas themselves. The Earl Grey of the opening gives way to the vegetal, gunpowder notes of green tea, and then mate, all herbs and dried hay. Flowers seep in; a subtle velveteen texture from violet absolute, then mimosa lending its warm, pollenous powderpuff; jasmine softening and rounding out the more acerbic odors.

But the most prominent note in the fragrance’s center is undoubtedly chamomile, whose bouquet smells to me like a melange of dried linden blossom, straw, and angelica. It merges with the tea notes easily but, along with some mulchy tobacco leaf, also deepens the perfume’s herbal quality. Stepping back and smelling Salon dt now, it’s as if I’ve been offered a calming tonic by a medieval herbalist; soothingly bittersweet, aromas of wildflowers and countryside stirred into a cool, dark brew.

Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page Bridgerton Season 2

I often find that there’s a certain motion to Balamis’ fragrances, a soothing back and forth that feels a bit like a waltz step, swaying gently from side to side, back and forth and then spinning gracefully. In Salon dt, that movement is created by the way certain notes surge forward quietly, then recede, then return with others. Here, I find it most in the mid-section, when the flowers and tea notes touch and part, as if in quiet minuet. In particular, the mimosa is a lovely foil for the mate, the dry hay-like odor of the tea playing off mimosa’s crumbly, honey-powder scent. There’s a wonderful, soft fruitiness in Salon dt’s heart that smells rather like bee balm, while the astringent notes stay present but backgrounded, keeping the sweeter, richer notes in check. After a while, the dusty sweetness of nutmeg is just discernable, complemented seamlessly by sandalwood (Note to self: bug Angelos to create a nutmeg-sandalwood perfume).

Angelos Creations Olfactives Salon dt quiets in its dry-down after about two hours, and while it does not by any means disappear, it does beckon another spray. This is my favourite duration for a hot weather perfume; the notes never become weighty, and I can relive that elegant progression of teas and florals as desired. It is a wonderful exemplar of tea fragrances, a perfectly balanced blend of dry-herbal, tart fruit, and filigreed florals that treads an indefinite line between genders. On a humid, hazy July day like today, there’s nothing I’d rather wear.

Notes: Bergamot, lemongrass, pink grapefruit, black currant, raspberry, violet leaves abs., raspberry leaves absolute, ho wood, blue chamomile, mimosa absolute from India, jasmine absolute from Egypt, black tea absolute, green tea, mate absolute, osmanthus absolute from China, orris butter, clary sage, nutmeg, musk, orange flower absolute, muguet, beeswax absolute, santalum lanceolatum, blond tobacco accord.

Was just going to skip right past this, but another tea scent? And chamomile? Yes please. Green tea isn’t always my favorite note – even though I drink it, but osmanthus and chamomile sound so good! I’d love to be entered in the drawing.

  • To me, a delightful surprise came in the form of the inclusion of chamomile amidst all the notes mentioned in this article. I can almost envision the steam rising from a freshly brewed cup of tea, mingling with the gentle sweetness of chamomile blossoms. The article beautifully describes the perfume’s composition.
Living in the UK, where our weather can be rather temperamental, finding a fragrance that complements the climate is essential. Salon dt seems like an ideal choice.

  • My hat is off to the perfumer Balamis for creating Salon dt. This fragrance is complex and doesn’t remind me of any other fragrance I can recall trying, but it does strongly remind me of a specific place and time. Have you ever been to a Greek café on the Mediterranean Sea in the evening, sipping Earl Grey tea with honey? Occasionally, the waiter passes by with new orders of different tea flavors, carried to you by the sea breeze. I’m hooked by these fresh herbal fruity notes that uplift your mood like nothing else. I hope that I can win this giveaway, and good luck to others.
    Greetings from the USA.

  • The harmony and exquisite notes of this fragrance spark my interest. It sounds so elegant and relaxing. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

Meditative, relaxing and lush just in time for the mid summer wine parties. I’m ready for this. Michigan, USA

  • As a lover of Earl Grey tea, Salon dt is definitely added to my wishlist. The notes of lemongrass, pink grapefruit, raspberry, chamomile, clary sage, beeswax & tobacco piqued my interest. I liked that it’s suggested as a hot weather fragrance. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • I find tea such a relaxing and lovely note in perfume and this one sounds so complex and beautiful! I love that there’s multiple varieties of tea and that it includes chamomile, tobacco and beeswax. Would love to be lucky enough to win this one. In NY, USA.

Stunning example of tea fragrances, a perfectly balanced blend of dry fruits from herbs, aromas and filigree flowers, treading an undefined line. I am from EU

  • I am an avid tea drinker and as of late have been finding myself enamored with tea in fragrances as well. Blackwood Sun from For the Scent of It and Indigo Smoke from Arquiste are two of my recent loves, but Salon dt seems to be taking tea in a different direction. Lauryn mentioned the raspberry being quite prominent and helping to round out the medicinal profile of the Earl Grey. She also mentioned green tea and mate having a strong presence in this composition. As both of those teas are revered for their gunpowder notes, I am keen to see how their herbal and mineralic facets will come into play. Sounds like an incredibly unique fragrance and I would love to give it a spin. I have tried Angelos’ Eau de Vertu so I am fully aware that he is capable of putting out a spring/summer scent unlike anything else on the market. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • I love the taste and aroma of tea, so I really enjoy tea fragrances. I have been very interested in Salon dt since its release. The combination of Earl Grey, flowers, and chamomile sounds especially delicious. I’m intrigued by Lauryn’s comment about the osmanthus slyly suggesting tea cakes. I would love to smell like a calming tonic from a medieval herbalist! Salon dt really does sound like the perfect fragrance for these warm summer months. I would absolutely love to own a bottle of it. Thank you, Lauryn, for the excellent review, and thank you to Angelos Balamis for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • The thing that strikes me is the notes, because i’m a sucker for tea and clary sage, this should definetly be a great scent <3
    Greetings from Romania, EU!

  • What strikes me most is the simplicity of Salon dt as a fragrance and an effect, in contrast with the rather respectable number of notes used to obtain it. That only proves it takes a lot of art, craft and effort in order to create even, or maybe especially the simplest of scents, as long as one wants to obtain the most realistic, refined result.
The paragraph “it’s as if I’ve been offered a calming tonic by a medieval herbalist; soothingly bittersweet, aromas of wildflowers and countryside stirred into a cool, dark brew” really resonated with me.

  • This is not the first time yal have gotten me with that intro. I thought you were really giving a tea recipe until have way thru the sentence in I realized you were describing the fragrance. I’m loving the chances to try new tea scents and Angelos Creations Olfactives has already given me one of my fav discoveries of the year in Eau de Vertu.

I’ve wanted this fragrance for a long time, I think it’s perfect for summer. Very complex, as every Angelos perfume, with a fantastic evolution: green, herbal in the opening then it become more sweet, floral, creamy. I’m using the sample sparingly but i think it’s time for a full size now ahah.

  • “soothingly bittersweet, aromas of wildflowers and countryside stirred into a cool, dark brew.” Chamomile is a little bitter to me. I like the idea of my grandmother country side fields with all the wild flowers. I live in London, UK.

  • I’m a massive tea drinker on the hunt for a perfect chamomile scent, so Salon dt sounds like something I would totally love! Intrigued by the combination of hay + honey -like notes, which I very much enjoy individually but would love to try in one same creation. Thanks for the great review as always!

  • I like tea perfumes (I think my favorite is Masque Milano Russian Tea) and I have never smelled chamomile in a perfume, so you have got me really intrigued. I’m reading the long list of notes and they all seem to blend well with each other, I don’t see anything that doesn’t fit the picture. Nice!

  • Nice review Lauryn! It is soso hot in Spain that I would love to spritz on my skin the Salon dt by Angelo Balamis. These days I always have a jar of iced green sencha tea in the refrigerator and the notes of this scent seem perfect: multilayered, dry, tart and flowered. It has two of my preferred notes: Raspberry and my beloved Osmanthus. This notes added to the earl grey, the gunpowder green tea and the mate make a perfect mix. I like Angelo uses the not so usual note of chamomile ( I loved Gucci Memoire d’une Odeur because the use of this herb as a keynote) to enhance the herbal quality of this scent. I live in Spain, EU.

Angelos is very talented and materializes innovative ideas in his perfume releases. I am not a fan of tea fragrances as i find them quite linear and one dimensional as the author, but knowing what Angelos is capable of and by reading the review i expect a modern and complex tea fragrance with a lot of notes and distinguished facets. The tobacco and the bitterness grew my interest in the creation. I wish the best for Angelos and i highly recommend trying his creations. I live in Europe, Greece

  • I would love to try a creation by Angelos, his fragrances have a soul. Perfumes made with love 🙂

Move over Elizabeth Arden, the cool tea kids have entered the room. This note-dense perfume harkens to a Roja Dove but with a gentle, transient nature. Nutmeg! Blond tobacco! Chamomile and friends! Please add me to the draw for this lovely-sounding fragrance. I live in the USA.

  • Great review by the one and only Lauryn!
This is my first time reading about Angelos Creations Olfactivos but it surely wont be the last one. The brand looks totally amazing and the ingredients that Angelos uses are surely top notch. The thing that got my attention the most about Salon dt is that the notes never become weighty for a hot weather perfume. I love tea scent fragrances and I think this is one perfume that I would adore to have in my collection.

Angelos Creations Olfactives Salon dt sounds right up my ally!
I have been loving wearing tea fragrances this Summer including Dear Polly, The Matcha, Gris Charnel, and The Noir and this fragrance sounds like a perfect addition for myself!
What a beautiful list of notes, and everything you describe about this sounds so lovely. Earl Grey in the opening to a woody dry down, bliss…

  • I enjoy wearing tea scents in the hot, humid summer months. I find them more refreshing and elegant than the typical fruit and tropical flower extravaganzas. The chamomile is a welcome accompaniment to the range of green and black teas. The osmanthus and mimosa seem to add a delicate floral aspect. As Lauryn mentioned, it does sound perfectly balanced and especially suited for this type of weather. I’m in the US.

  • Oh, wow, this sounds amazing! A trip through tea in all it’s facets, so many varieties married together…yeah. Wanna try this! I live in the USA.

  • Great review, Lauryn, especially the fun introduction. I like all the different takes on Earl Gray, green, and mate tea Angelos Balamis packed into this cuppa, while also adding in raspberry, fruity osmanthus, and floral notes for an unexpected twist. The chamomile accord makes me think of hot herbal tea before bed—medicinal, calming, and fragrant. Combined together, I’m curious how Salon dt flows between those aspects of the perfume during it’s relatively quick drydown.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Angelos Balamis of Angelos Creations Olfactives has been having a very prolific career. Yet, so far, I haven’t had the chance to try out any of his fragrances.
From what I have been reading, his scents have a vintage quality and feel and I look forward to experiencing them.
Lauryn Beer is a wordsmith with sophisticated writing and I love the nearly inexistent adjectives depicting the scent. I enjoy reading the part where the author refers to a certain motion that most of the perfumer’s fragrances seem to have. Many thanks for this draw. I live in France

  • RonaldProkes17 says:

    What a wonderful review, Lauryn.
I think it’s brilliant of Angelos to create a multifaceted deep tea fragrance. So many times I have found myself underwhelmed by tea fragrances and will often opt for smelling actually fresh brewed tea.
I was also intrigued by how Lauryn described Angelos fragrances to have a certain motion. In the case of Salon dt I think it’s brilliant that it feels like a refined waltz between the floral and powdery and tea notes in the composition. I think that is such an interesting thing to think about when composing and smelling a fragrance. I would love to try this composition for myself as I am quickly becoming a big fan of Angelos – he strikes me as a completely unique and original thinker in the realm of fragrance.
I am located in California, USA.

  • This sounds so pretty and your statement “But the most prominent note in the fragrance’s center is undoubtedly chamomile, whose bouquet smells to me like a melange of dried linden blossom, straw, and angelica.” makes me like it that much more. I love that gentle, soothing note of chamomile. I like that itstands out in the fragrance The only scents I’ve ever come across where that note is featured is usually just aromatherapy body sprays. I would love to test out this perfume!
I live in the USA (PA).

  • I love tea fragrances and I am struck by how complex and well balanced this one sounds with all the different herbal, floral, and fruity elements. I would love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • You had me at “medieval herbalist”!

I’ve really enjoyed reading all of the reviews on such unique tea scents lately, and this one sounds wonderful as well. All of these notes working together is very intriguing, and the beautiful shade of green grabbed me as well

I definitely want to try Angelos Creations Olfactives Salon dt. I love Earl Grey tea and I’m interested to try Salon dt because it seems to use Earl Grey tea as a scent profile but with juicy raspberry, apricot-infused osmanthus, and more. I’m interested to see how the floral notes work with the tea notes, and in combination with its many other notes. I’m truly intrigued to try this fragrance, and I’m glad to see a fragrance made by Angelos Balamis which doesn’t include something like civet musk. I live in the U.S.A.

  • What struck my interest in Angelos Creations Olfactives Salon was the amount of notes in the fragrance. I believe that perfumery is an art and to have so many notes well blended into a great fragrance is an art. Thanks for the opportunity. Greetings from the USA.

  • I am a lifelong tea drinker, so I would love to have a tea scent on my shelf, especially if it includes chamomile, which, while it isn’t my favorite tea to drink, is a note I really appreciate in perfume. Thanks for this drawing!
